You know this led to more iron clad contracts?…. And these people put them together and foot the bill on EVERYTHING…. Such “boss move”…. They didn’t even put themselves together
@@alejandromolinacThey didn’t put themselves together but they did the work of performing right? The group wouldn’t be as successful as it was without them, right? Why shouldn’t they own their masters?
@josephjimenez5541 the girls' voices are on the tapes. Without any proof that the managers helped with writing and no existing contract maybe they just didn't have a strong enough case.
It’s crazy to think about how much success they had in such a short time. They had only been together for 4 years before Geri left and already had their own movie and started a world tour before she left.
I was in Mexico visiting family when they blew up in America. “Wannabe@ was everywhere in Mexico, and when I came back to the USA, it was spice Mania, and I *loved it!!!*
They REALLY really did! This was my entire childhood! That press conference where they read Geri's statement is a core memory that I apparently know word for word lol
Geri really seemed like a strong personality there, even at the end. She pushed her way into the group, dragged them all to new managers with a contract and possibly the first to say they should manage themselves. Then being the first to leave, she was the linchpin of the group.
@@happy_bubble7 definitely. When your "girl power" friends worked 3 years day and night then become the highest selling girl group of all time, only a narcissist could just leave them hanging out of nowhere after, what, a year of the success they worked sooo hard to achieve...i do NOT like Geri. I liked that she apologized for leaving her band in the lurch with no warning but the apology was 20 years too late. Glad V didnt participate with that tour. Shes has too much dignity to be dealing with Geri's bs now. Burn me once shame on you. Burn me twice shame on me, ya know. Who's to say Geri wouldn't up and leave them halfway through that tour halfway through a show too?! Lol i would have wrote into their contracts if anyone (eyes Geri) up and abandons the tour midway for petty reasons you owe us all the money we would've made off that tour. Perhaps that wouldve kept her silly ass on the stage...
@@Janellabelle Tell us how you really feel! 😂 But seriously, well said. That should've definitely been in their contract, I mean there are 5 women afterall! The fact they stayed together for as long as they did is amazing in & of it self!
Geri going into a post-breakup spiral because Mel chose to take a husband after years of their loving partnership just makes sense. It's obvious it wasn't just a hookup but that they had been in love. And the fact the other girls have been respectfully quiet about it shows how real it was. Private tropical vacations? So romantic. And her comment that she didn't even have eyes for Kylie Minogue, one of the biggest sex symbols of the 90s, after MB. She was down bad. To think about the positive wlw representation if they had reconciled. Sad their breakup kind of broke Geri and now she puts on this uber-tory vibe.
Look how excited Geri was on stage with Mel B during the reunion tour. There's still sparks! The footage is a bit somber when you know the whole story.
I saw this documentary about them recently and it hit me that no one took them seriously but the little girls. They were more mocked and ridiculed by media (and mostly men) when they talked about girl power and such. The world wasn't ready for them, but the little girls were!
I’m still salty over Geri’s departure from the group lol. I was on a school camp trip when the news broke, and I can still vividly remember me & my friends crying (we were 8/9), when one of the parent helpers told us. We were also set to do the spice girls for our talent show night & had to axe the girl who was to play Geri 😂😂
Sorry but I couldn't help but laugh at you axing the poor girl who was supposed to be Geri. I can't imagine how bad the drama would have been if social media existed back then, it was already bad and a huge chock.
Fun fact, Spice Girls is the highest selling girl group of all time, globally. TLC is the highest selling girl group of all time, in America. Shortly before her death, Lisa left Eye Lopez and Melanie C collaborated on a song together called “Never Be The Same Again”. It was so powerful how members from the two largest girl groups of all time collaborated. It’s also very powerful and prophetic, that after the success of these two 90s girl groups, The industry would never be the same again…
Had no idea about Geri taking initiative and reaching out to another manager, and then stealing the demo. That’s so cool 🕺🏻. And loved her part when she talks about girl power being about not making yourself small, I was just consciously thinking to myself to stop doing that to myself this week at work. But also, her leaving without saying anything.. I would never truly forgive her either.
I might have bailed quietly at a young age🫤I have a hard time dealing with emotions; long, drawn out goodbyes, and being the center of attention. But they had business obligations, so this was unacceptable.
I had no idea either!! Stealing the masters is such a boss move!!! But yeah, I think the epic impulsiveness that gave Geri the grit to take control of the masters was the same thing to lead her to believe she could actually continue on as a solo act, which ultimately turned out to be a really bad choice on her part.
Geri told them she would quit after the world tours last show in Wembley. According to geris book what pushed her to quit sooner is her depression, eating disorder and the girls or management scrapping her breast cancer interview which was really important to her. I think Mel C understands Geri because she also had depression and eating disorder and wanted out during the forever era, the difference is that once 2 members were gone it was over and the girls didn't want Mel C to be painted as the villain breaking them up so they said they went on to hiatus. This is from Mel C's book Mel B should forgive Geri because Geris mental health issues and eating problems truly were a valid reason and once U understand that it's easy to see why she felt like the girls didn't need her or want her because that's how depression takes over your mind. Their schedule was insane and Geri was burned out by all this stuff
@@survivorbest4589 for me, a valid reason is beside the point. Everyone has their own battles, and what matters is how you deal with it. My point is, I would never have forgiven her for how she left without letting the other girls know, after everything they’d been through together the group were owed to be told by Geri herself that this was the time. I’d feel backstabbed and abandoned if someone so close to me didn’t communicate that.
Gerry was BASED with taking control in the beginning and stealing the masters. But NOT based for leaving the group that way. Even if the romantic rumours were true, you just dont leave your 4 friends like that.
Yeah at least you talk with them, that you don't want to do it anymore and put on a plan and maybe leave after the tour. But it seems to have been her thing back then to just leave. Even if I think it was really smart of her to convince the girls to leave it was kind of rude to the management to suddenly leave too as I'm thinking they must have put quite a lot of time and money on them but their own stupidity to not write a contract. But I think it was 100% the right and smart move of them to leave and find bigger more experienced management and take their career in their own hands, very bold and brave, sometimes you have to be bit annoying rude. Perhaps when Geri left the group she thought that would be better for her career too but then she was wrong (unless she was just tired of everything).
Yea, she showed the complete opposite of girl power by abandoning her sisters after only one and a half years of massive success...you know how hard it is to get a band to become that big and she just tossed it all in the trash after one single year!
Agreed, she should have told them straight up, and honoured her contract obligations, and helped with transitioning out. Of course, that would be hard because she was tired, overworked and dealing with personal issues, but the other girls were too. I understand now in hindsight why she did this and it was hard, but I'm not going to lie I was pissed when the video started to focus on her departure. Her friends deserved better.
I don't know that Geri necessarily left the band just because of a failed relationship with Mel B, but I do believe that it was at least part of the reason and that they did have some sort of relationship. It may have been more of a friends-with-benefits situation or maybe one of them was more invested than the other - but I think it's pretty obvious both looking back and also based off what Mel B has said. Yes, Geri may've denied it, but she also could've wanted to keep it all quiet for many reasons that are totally valid. We'll never truly know, but regardless, it seems that they've been able to put it all aside and work together again (as with the other girls) and remain friends and that's what really matters.
Yep, thatʼs the real reason she left the group, she was so heartbroken when Mel B announced her engagement with their fellow backup dancer. Geri was way more invested than Mel B that time, and she fell hard. You can really tell the tension between them during their group interviews.
@@arcanesigma I think it definitely had a lot to do with it. Her ex-husband even confirmed it prior to it becoming public knowledge that they were much more than friends. As well as when they finally started touring together again, Geri was always all over her. TBH I don't think the spark ever really left, but I do believe it's one of those situations where you realize your both better off as friends because of how messy things always got between them.
@@ToastedGorgia yeah, I think Mel B was Geriʼs first love because it took a toll on her when their secret relationship fell apart and it took a long time before she got over her. I do agree that theyʼre better off as friends than lovers. Geri is now happily married with her husband.
Yeah, she seems content. I feel like if Mel B could've properly loved Geri, I feel like they would've did well together. But as long as Geri was comfortable being Mel's side chick Geri would've never been happy. So, in a way I am happy she broke away from that. Sadly, I feel like Mel will never know love like she could've had with Geri, no matter who she dates. Everyone else always seemed to want something from her or want to control her. Geri just wanted Mel for Mel. @@arcanesigma
There will never be anything like Spice girls ever again. They truly are so special and unique❤️ This was so awesome to watch..took me right back to my childhood🇬🇧✌️☮️
@@ciciriddick why for her share when she caused it all by herself? She really screwed up big time and didn't even have a decency to say proper goodbye or issue an apology

@@ItsaKindOfMagic86you know what? I actually left my job like that once. I simply said "bye" and left. But that was bcs I was bullied there no those women and I was heartbroken to the point that's all I could say. Maybe Geri was too... I don't know... I can't imagine the pressure those girls faced on daily basis
It's very... interesting that as soon as the group decided to fire their manager and be in full control - the actual, real world, empowerment part of 'Girl Power' - that the industry and media turned against them. Girl Power was great until the women actually wanted power. The irony is not lost on me. It's a real pity. They were my first introduction to the concept of feminism when I was less than ten years old, and I love them for that. Thank you for this video, I'm a subscriber now.
I used to laugh when the spice girls would say "Girl power", their management was male, the record label had male owner, the songwriters were men, etc etc.
They ignored that groups like TLC and Salt N' Peppa had done the whole girl power thing just a few years earlier. How Joan Jett of Rhe Runaways, Debbrah Harry of Blondie and Poison Ivy of The Cramps were creative and controlling forces behind their bands and had fought the industry. Or how a generation before that Joni Mitchell, Dusty Springfield and Janice Joplin were laying the groundwork for what would come. True girl power is having the courage to recognize those who made it possible for you to be where you are today.
@@conniethesconnie I don't think they ignored those other acts that you mentioned - it was more like a fresh take for a girl pop group. I saw an interview with Mel C once and she said the main inspiration for 'girl power' was Madonna as they all the loved the way she was so obviously a woman in control of her life and a very successful career.
I barely found out about the Geri/Mel B relationship this past summer and immediately did a RUclips deep dive in utter disbelief and shock. This has to be the best overall summary of the group and their impact. Bravo 👏
I was a teenybopper during their rise and it truly was a “SpiceWorld” they were EVERYWHERE!! TV, magazines, radio etc. They had me speaking in a terrible British accent! They’ll always have a special place in my heart 💜😇
Just imagine what the internet would say if they came out today. Let me remind you that The Spice Girls and especially Geri was all about Girl Power Feminism and Equlization between the sexes What is the internet hating most on right now? Girl Power Feminism Equlization between the sexes WOKE and LGBTQ+ All things that The Spice Girls made cool in the 90's - just imagine what would happen if they came out today.....
I honestly thought it was very selfish what Geri did. She acted like she wanted to do everything but then acted like a drama queen when she was expected to deliver
@@BenjiDarius ever heard of "better late than never"? i'm sorry, but i would definitely accept an apology even after 20 years because we will never truly know geri's experience. also, it shows a lot of maturity for her to have the courage to come back and apologize! i really do not understand petty people.
the impact these girls had on my confidence . emphasizing “girl power” at 8 y/o was huge..i said it eveywhere i went..and they were so incredible to me . they will be apart of me forever
I enjoyed this so much from start to finish. I felt so nostalgic 😢. I had no idea about half of what I learnt in this video. Mel B and Geri’s secret relationship, and the fact that the Spice Girls were ONLY together for 4 years was the biggest shocker for me! Looking back, it felt like they were together so much longer. Great work 👍🏽💜
I’m not crying you’re crying!! This hit me lol I have such nostalgia for the Spice Girls. They were the only group I would have considered myself a super fan of during my childhood and it was so long ago that at times it almost feels like a fever dream to me but I adored each one of them and everything they stood for. Thanks for making this video and transporting me back to a time when life was simple, happy, and without worry.
Yes!!! I LOVEDDD them. I had their CD insert pictures blown up into poster size on my bedroom walls 😂 my cousin & babysitter worked at staples and she’d bring me the prints 😂 my sister loved and adored Hanson. I hated them and obviously GIRL POWERRRR ruled my world 😂 I miss them! They were really something special, and it’s sad that boy bands were like taking over 😂 spice girls 4 ever ❤❤❤😂😂
This is absolutely one of the best documentaries you guys have made. It's so well put together, the way the story is told is very professional. I love it.
This is everything. I’ve watched multiple Spice Girl documentaries, had multiple Spice Girls VHS’s as a kid, had multiple books and magazines about them, had some dolls, and a whole Baby Spice kit including the clear backpack and her baby necklace. I loved them SO MUCH. This video makes me teary a little lol. It’s so weird to think they had bad feelings during that time, as a really little kid, all I knew was I wanted to be like them. They were incredibly influential.
The queer hot mess behind the scenes makes me love them even more. I can't help but imagine an alternate timeline where the Spice Girls have Britney-Spears-class career longevity.
@@blaah9999 Absolutely, and I should have considered that when I commented. Having her privacy and trust destroyed like that must have been devastating. The entire scenario was gross. Everything about Piers in that segment made my skin crawl.
OMG, thank you so much Shelby for doing this deep dive. I am a Brit who literally grew up on the Spice Girls, and didn’t even realise that Mel B and Jerry had a thing. It was nice to take a walk down memory lane. I loved the Spice Girls. I think you are right that it was way too much too soon. They could have had some longevity, and done better in the US if they had only taken their time and not been worked so hard. Great episode. Also, if you’re a fan of British girl groups, I would love to see a deep dive into the rise and fall of Little Mix! May be a lot more recent than the Spice Girls, but still having all the controversy and uproar that goes by being in a British girl group with Jesse, leaving scandals with boyfriends who are footballers. This girl group has it all. or maybe even a look into Girls Aloud that was another girl group who have had their fair share of scandal. Plus there is a American interest with Cheryl Cole being Simon Cowells, Protege.
Yeah I had no idea they had a thing either but then again I was a little kid so I wouldn't of even known about that stuff or understood it yet 😂 But hi from America 👋🏼🫶🏼
The Spice Girls and the Spice World movie were sooo important and inspiring to me as a little girl, this made me emotional! I didn’t know about Geri strealing their master copies and it’s so awesome and refreshing given the things coming out about the industry that happened around that time. Hearing Geri’s apology was like so healing for me and I didn’t even know it but I needed to hear that apology from her 😂 Their friendships were always so beautiful and I could see looking back it was painful for all of them when Geri left the group. And knowing now what the truth probably was is now so relatable as a bisexual and I have even more love for all of them. This quality of content is incredible for RUclips, can’t wait to see the next video!
I love The Spice Girls and their message of female empowerment! They have proven over the years even with their breakup and then reuniting years later that friendship truly wins!
It honestly was awesome they had 5 girls with different styles and personalities showing you can be anything and different people can still be close friends
what do u think it was about them that people got over with them i watched there first video wannabe and noticed they were different to others the difference in there personalities etc. and what do u think there message was of female empowerment@@oooh19
They get back together, purely for money, due to whatever individual shit is going on in their lives lol, and the public which is you, foolishly spend your money on them, to use you, so they can get there money theyve lost, and then they go there seperate ways, happy theyve got the publics money lol.
When Geri left it made me realize a lot about life, friendships and relationships. in my circle of friends i was involved with one member (another guy) of our clique and no one even knew it. i was so heart broken when he didnt choose me in the daylight for all to see, he chose to lie and pretend to be straight. this went on for 12 years btw.
some people go through phases, fact of life, some just want to experiement, another fact of life, the point of life is self discovery and to go on your own journey and not ride on someone else's bandwagon or expect others to be your passenger

Spiceworld never came crashing down. In 2007 they did a sold out world tour, in 2012 they performed to millions at the olympics and in 2019 they performed a UK and Ireland tour completely sold out. The demand for the spice girls is still there throughout the world. Spice world never crashed down!
When Geri Left it really hit me hard. I was 16, I always said she was my first breakup. I got immediately detached from the group like a switch. It was like they never happened, but always in my heart.
I was wondering why Geri was always so vague about what her disagreement was with Mel B, which caused her to quit. Mel B always played dumb like she had no idea what was wrong. It never made sense to me. This couple theory makes sense to me, crazy.
Yeah and imo she’s wrong for being mad that their relationship came out. Shes already wrong for leaving her friends high and dry, but also asking Mel to never talk about the truth about her own life is plain selfish. Yes maybe Mel cheated but you can’t even be upset about that if you want to pretend your relationship never happened. Idk I just dislike people who can’t get on board with reality. There’s nothing wrong with Mel answering a question honestly. Geri is gaslighting for what ever reason and should reflect on that. It’s not the 1500s where you can be executed for being bi/gay.. 🙄
I thought that and she was my crush. Gosh, she is hot. This is shocking to find out. Never would have thought Geri and Mel B. It's all good. I love them all!
I remember when Geri left, I cried soooo much. I still have my dolls, tapes, cds, pencils, photo album and other merch. I will always love the Spice Girls. ❤
Chris Evans yes I do you guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ is good news soon thanks you young and happy you just like me look good on Monday night you can find out now that we can do it tomorrow
As a 90’s kid, spice girls was the biggest thing when I was a kid!♥️😊 I can remember the devastation when geri left. And the enormous hate she got for that. Most important as a child was to pick up which spice girl would you be in your friendgroup.😅 I had so much spice girls photos, you could collect!
I remember that too, it was fun but as I was extremely shy I was always forced to be Victoria even if I didn't want to buy now I'm okay with it as I looked mostly like her and had similar hair. So nostalgic, I remember the school talent shows with almost all the girls doing Spice Girls one year.
@@blaah9999 yeah she was wrong for that. I think in her mind it wasn't anything to be ashamed of (and of course it isn't) but if Gerri was struggling with internalized homophobia, or even just homophobic family/friends, then what Mel did was kind of traumatizing and violating. She should've just dodged the question if she didn't want to straight up lie.
I remember when they reunited in 2012 for the London Olympics, and it was just such fun. It really did just transport me back to my 8 year old self that was just starting to realize the power in myself because of those 5 ladies. It was great to see them all together again. I was way too young to recognize why they had broken up, but I'm glad that everything has started to settle and looked on with compassion instead of disdain. Let's be real, the 90's and 00's were a fucked up time to be a woman in the public celebrity sphere. We did so many women so dirty, and I'm glad we're coming around as a society to really take ownership of just how vitriolic we all were back then.
UGHHH! YES! I am so happy you included the rumored relationship between Mel B and Geri. That makes soooooo much more sense than literally anything else. I wished it had been a time where they could be honest about it but I truly hope in the future they can just say it. Much love and respect to all of them. I'd would literally DIE if I could ever see them all together again.
Yep and Geri is so wrong for expecting Mel to keep that a secret. That’s a huge part of Mel’s life and I hate when people expect you to keep apart of the truth to yourself just to suit your own agenda.
I had no idea about the possible in-group relationship until this video, but they were definitely part of my crushes as a little 4 year old girl, especially Baby Spice.
Still the Biggest selling Girlgroup of all time after 28 years !! Only Girl group to sell out Wembley stadium 5 times. We will never see anything come close to spice mania ever again. What those girls achieved in literally 2 years is amazing. Melanie C is my favourite her solo stuff is also amazing she is so lovely and down to earth.
Considering the few albums they have put out to makes it that much more impressive. The Supremes who are 2nd all time made 8 albums I believe, Destiny Child sold 60 mil and made 5 albums and both those groups had a star that the girls didn't.
I've missed ya'll!!! Also THANK YOU for covering the Spice Girls. They have the BEST lore and I love them with all my heart. I know a lot but of course ya'll are giving me even more info. I needed this today you have no idea.
I was 15 in 1996 and I was OBSESSED with the Spice Girls. Every wall in my bedroom was covered with posters, even the ceiling! I brought every cd and magazine i could get my hands on 😊 I've saw them in concert in Manchester on April 7th 1998 and I was squealing like a little girl because I was that excited. I even shed a tear when Geri left. I was devastated! How my family didn't think I was a massive homosexual is beyond me! 😂 That was a great time in my life. It was pure innocence. I do cringe a little, though 🙃
Geri was my FAVORITE and she left the group between the time I got tickets to see them and when they actually performed. I was HEARTBROKEN and heard some tiny things then that I held on to as to why she left. I'm so excited to actually hear the story.
I love how close they are as a group. I remember growing up and listening to their songs besides backstreet boys. I was too young to understand anything as a little girl but now I finally understood why they broke up. But after all this, they are still amazing people who are able to communicate with each other with respect. ❤
I remember playing Tomb Raider 2 whilst listening to the Spice Girls when I was a kid approx 1998. The original Tomb Raiders are being remastered Feb 14th, 2024, and I'm going to listen to the Spice Girls again whilst playing. Bring back some nostalgia ❤😂
I really liked the Spice Girls, but after seeing a few of these documentaries/videos, it's almost impossible not to see the cracks starting. I can't imagine that level of fame and adoration and then the resulting backlash. I had NO IDEA that maybe Geri and Mel had a little thing going on in the background.
I was way too excited to watch this! Main takeaways: -What Geri did was so selfish ugh 😩 The Spice Girl era was truly a time to be alive. Too bad it for cut short 😢 -I never knew they wanted an all-white group 😒. Ironic how Scary was the first to be picked. I was her in my friend groups - would even wear my hair with the two buns in the front 🤣 Girl power ✌🏾🥹
When they left the team that created them for being "too slow" they signed on for "too fast". Virgin never say them as more than a flash in the pan and worked to squeeze as much out of them as quickly as possible. They were not concerned with overexposure, or good exposure - they just took whatever money they could get their hands on. Burnout was inevitable.
I was obsessed with the spice girls as a child and I ended up convincing my kindy friends (and their mums) to go watch the spice girls movie with me. They had absolutely no idea what was going on, because they probably were only exposed to nursery rhymes at that age lol, but I was obsessed. My mum ended up buying me the CD so that I could watch the movie on and on for the next couple of years. I obviously have no idea of the drama that was going on. All I knew was 2 become 1 was my anthem. 😂
Wow this timeline of the sudden breakup is INTERSTING! So Geri announces she's leaving on Mel B's birthday (talk about a f you, lulz) on May 29, 1998 and Mel B's first daughter was born in Feb 19, 1999, meaning she likely was pregnant in May 1998, aka around her birthday, aka when she may have told Geri, either about the sex or potential pregnancy, etc. Sooo yeah Geri left right after, right? Seems like regardless of if they were or weren't together at that time that it was related overall, because the timelines aligns too much for it not too be somehow relevant imo. Also I really never gave Geri enough credit, during the time of their popularity she was the least like me so I wrote her off a fair bit, but now, after watching this, she made the Spice Girls happen really, and is really a strong, independent woman. Major props to her to starting and ending the best girl group ever in British history!
Geri is also a few years older than the rest of the ladies and had experienced a bit more of adult life and moderate succeess by then so it madness sense on why she was the driver in many facets: for the band, the financials and her personal convictions.
My daughter and I loved them so much and were lucky to see them in 2009. I am happy to have raised her to believe in ✨️GIRL POWER ✨️ VIVA FOREVER! ✨️👊🏼
That was unprofessional of Ginger Spice to just ditch her friends like that near the end of their European tour! I vaguely remember this. I hate when a member of a band or group does this, but the way she apologized about it publicly saved face.
Let alone the contracts - she wasn't thinking as a business person & put the girls in a lurch. Granted, if she had waited until the world tour, perhaps the band wouldn't have had time to support the fanbase/build interest as a quartet. We might not have had another xmas #1 with "Goodbye" & Vic & Mel B were pregnant by the end of it so.. who knows. So many hypothetical would have should have's with the hindsight of the Spice Girls, but I suppose it just happened how it happened.
@@suereeves5994their original contractors didn’t deserve them since they couldn’t even give them a contract. If I haven’t signed a contract and someone better offers me more than yeah I’d ditch them too but she definitely shouldn’t have left her friends like that
Man...I empathize with the stress Geri must have been under, but the way she left and the fallout? I'd never speak to her again if I were in the group.
I remember the first time I saw ' Wannabe' it was in 97 on The Box and became a forever fan. They always hold a special and nostalgic place in my heart. Knowing the history of Ginger and Scary made me love them more because they always encouraged authenticity and being true to yourself. Spicemania will always be in my heart. Thanks for this documentary. I have watched every documentary based on the girls!
Pure nostalgia😂 im giddy so in love with these girls and could live in those years forever🥰 not worrying about a thing other than malls, boys, and glitter lipgloss ❤
The recent Channel 4 documentary really highlighted how burnt out they were by the start of 2000. The fact they didn’t announce a split because they didn’t want to deal with the press intrusion, they just couldn’t go on. It’s also VERY clear that Simon Fuller was fired because of money. He came up with the idea of S Club 7 the day after he was fired and rinsed them completely. It was the absolute right decision to ditch him, as they all walked away with their well earned money. Good on them. TBH the Spice Girls didn’t need to be together as an active group forever, they will last forever anyway due to the impact they made.
I love the Spice Girls without them many of us may have not naturally gravitated to our besties without the messaging they provided us with and that I am forever grateful for
No, it definitely was a story in the uk at the time, it was just joked about and mixed in with other "untrue" stories to keep names in the press... for example, they said that one of the lads from Take That was dating Geri.... he wasn't, but it got press just before his album dropped. The uk tabloids and the celebs played a big game in those days
I loved The Spice Girls & "Spice World!" I had it on VHS, & would play it often! I wanted their platform boots or whatever they were. I loved all the songs. My friend had a Scary Spice doll. I was too young, but I had no idea about Mel B. & Geri being a thing.
This is a wonderfully edited and beautifully done documentary! As a woman who was a little girl and huge fan of the Spice Girls during the 90s, i absolutely idolized these girls and majorly looked up to each one if them. It was so nice to learn all this knowledge about their rise and fall. Still love all 5 of them ❤
I remember me and my sisters performing to spice girls in our living for our parents. We had the dress up spice girl clothes and had all the dolls and posters of them. We used to get the spice girl lollipops and so on. I was OBSESSED!!!
When geri left the band it was the first time my heart was truly heartbroken. My mom, sister and i had tickets to see them on their first world tour and it was when geri just left the band. My brother read to me the article saying that she would be at the concert still and i was so excited. Only to find out he was lying to me and i cried and cried. What a dick 😂 I was 9 and she was my favorite. It was my first concert and it was still amazing but i was sad she wasnt there. My whole room was deck out in spice girls posters. Spice girls everything. they truly were a phenomenon, and there will always be a special place in my heart for them. Still have all my original spice girls dolls on display.
I'll never forget meeting the spice girls at HMV in Montreal as a teen - that's when Geri was still there❤ Mel B was the nicest, calming my nerves and telling me she liked my shirt.
37:19 Sporty definitely knew. I recall an interview where the host asked some of the girls about living together and being accidentally touchy w/ each other. Mel C then answered that some of them had suspicions about certain members of the group, then looked at Geri and smiled. To which the latter couldn't say anything and just laughed it off.
As a little gay boy who was 15 in 1997, you really couldn’t put into the words seeing a bad whose message was to “celebrate being different” it was incredibly powerful
What an amazing group. Cool to get into this deep dive and hear how cleverly they outwitted their managements controlling hand to get that first album out. Esoecially considering how many other young pop groups couldn’t see the forest through the trees and signed their life away.
I absolutely shat myself when a family member gave me the cassette tapes (!!!!!) of both their albums for Christmas. Loved them and I love their message of girl power and friendship, doesn’t matter if they had issues the message still stands. They were an icon for all of us 80s/90s girls for sure
SPORTY SPICE!!!! Amazing 👍👍👍really enjoyed this. Totally awesome best documentary you've made. Finally knowing about Geri and Mel B relationship has given me a new appreciation and understanding to my first and favorite musical influence . It all makes sense now. Thank you for this video I think it will be very meaningful and eye opening to many LGBTQ kids who loved this group.
That's heartbreaking to hear. I remember being a young girl when I was super into them, and I think it was after one of their shows or the Spice Girl movie, there was an unplugged version of them where the cameras kept rolling but they weren't putting on that facade. They were smoking, cursing and I was shocked to see it. I stopped following them after that. But to think the one that wanted fast success was the first one to burn out and dip is wild. They were for sure a huge part of my childhood and their songs will always be a bop.
I would loooovveeee if you covered Little Mix and what happened with them Little Mix was the next biggest girl group in the UK after The Spice Girls so when we also had them split, it was a big blow so definitely want to know what happened there
Dude, Geri was not ghosted from the auditions. She MISSED them cause she was in Spain visiting her nan. In fact, when she first contacted the casting people, she thought she had missed the window of opportunity to participate. 2 weeks before closing, she gave them a ring and was in invited to attend. Theres a documentary on RUclips in which you can hear this from her very own mouth. Also, the Geri - Mel B relationship it was more a fling than anything serious. The media really are blowing it out of proportion
I agree completely, I don't know why this version of events still holds up today when there's countless interviews of Geri explaining why she left - it's like weird, slightly creepy fan fiction if you ask me. I think Mel B left things deliberately vague in that interview with Piers Morgan just to create a bit of media attention for herself and maybe even piss off Geri. She could have easily lied and denied everything, not like she's under oath smh.
@@izzyodge7071it wasnʼt just a 1 night stand, it became something deeper, too bad Geri was more invested than Mel B during their secret 5-year relationship, which really hurt her so bad.
Now I understand why Geri left the group, she and Mel B were more than friends like every relationship when you fight or break up with someone you love you can’t be in the same room with that person
God I really REALLY LOVE your videos!😍 As someone growing up in the 90s, I always wondered what happened to groups/artists and celebrities I used to like as a kid, and im not kidding when I say that I have been getting all the good info from you guys! You truly are Deep dive! Because most of the things I've seen in this channel have I not seen or heard much about anywhere else! Thanks to you, I know truly how Pussycat Dolls came to be and why they ended, what had happened to Tila Tequila, Fergie and now Spice Girls! It's not easy to find good sorces even if we have access to internet, now imagine how much harder it was back then before the internet! And by then I already have forgotten about the stars I used to like.. until I found your amazingly done videos! Thank you so much for the well researched material and for awakening a big sense of nostalgia in me! Keep up the good work, we love it!!
I absolutely loved this 💜 I was a 15 year old growing up in the suburbs of London UK and I clearly remember the day the Spice Girls exploded onto our screens quite literally from nowhere. They carried the music scene in many ways and dominated all the music channels as well as their endless interviews and guest appearances on mainstream tv. Their girl power ethos definitely made an impact on shy girls like me just coming of age. This doc was so nostalgic for me and reshaped my impressions of what I thought the Spice Girls were - I'd believed they were a fully manufactured band and had no idea just how much they took into their own hands and lived up to their brand. Proper business women, that's the mark of true girl power right there. Hugely inspiring message to this day, I have such respect for these girls. This doc was so well put together, you must have pored over hundreds of hours of archives to be able to include so much! TY x
They really were special then. I loved them. I was young and really didn’t understand how impressive and powerful they are compared to what happened to a lot of POP Stars in the 2000s
I know Mel B also has a very assertive and wild personality, so the nickname suits her for other reasons, but it NEVER sat right with me that that journalist named her "Scary" when she's the only black woman in the group.
I completely understand your point but I can tell you,as a girl who was growing up listening to Spice Girls it never crossed my mind she's called "scary spice" because she's black. It was because she was this strong, outgoing and as you said,a bit wild person. Thinking about it now,"scary" is a bit... unfortunate either way. They could nickname her "wild spice" or something.
Wow great video! I saw the spice girls after Geri had left with my mom when I was in Kindergarten. It was my first concert and we got lost on the way to the stadium. We stopped to get gas and ended up following another mother and daughter who had her hair in “baby spice space buns” and arrived just fine. The spice girls were my first music obsession and they still remind me of good memories of my early childhood. I had no idea about their early days or the spicy thing between Geri and Mel b. Thought I was young I’m so happy to have experienced spice mania first hand ❤
Was never a big fan and wasn't into the media hype back then but there's no doubt on their accomplishments and they deserve every bit of happiness and money for their hard work. Good doc, wd!

The fact that the girls staged a heist to get their masters is iconic I hope more artists take control of their masters!

I love the Spice Girls even more for that.
Isn’t this stealing? Did the other guys ever sue?
@josephjimenez5541 the girls' voices are on the tapes. Without any proof that the managers helped with writing and no existing contract maybe they just didn't have a strong enough case.
It’s crazy to think about how much success they had in such a short time. They had only been together for 4 years before Geri left and already had their own movie and started a world tour before she left.

If you weren’t alive in the 90s you REALLY don’t understand the MASSIVE impact of these girls. They literally ruled the world for a short time.
I was in Mexico visiting family when they blew up in America. “Wannabe@ was everywhere in Mexico, and when I came back to the USA, it was spice Mania, and I *loved it!!!*
Being born in the mid 90s, I’m a bit young to remember.
It wasn’t until the early to mid 2000s where I first heard of the Spice Girls.
I was 8 and 9 years old at the time and I remember every bit of it. I was literally obsessed with this group and they were all over the place
They REALLY really did! This was my entire childhood! That press conference where they read Geri's statement is a core memory that I apparently know word for word lol
Impact of 💩
Geri really seemed like a strong personality there, even at the end. She pushed her way into the group, dragged them all to new managers with a contract and possibly the first to say they should manage themselves. Then being the first to leave, she was the linchpin of the group.
Victoria was also their business mastermind.
The oldest as well, Geri.
That's because she has a narcassistic personality who demands things go her way, or no way.
@@happy_bubble7 definitely. When your "girl power" friends worked 3 years day and night then become the highest selling girl group of all time, only a narcissist could just leave them hanging out of nowhere after, what, a year of the success they worked sooo hard to achieve...i do NOT like Geri. Shes has too much dignity to be dealing with Geri's bs now. Burn me once shame on you. Burn me twice shame on me, ya know. Who's to say Geri wouldn't up and leave them halfway through that tour halfway through a show too?! Tell us how you really feel!
So well put. I think that’s exactly what it boiled down too, tbh.
Look how excited Geri was on stage with Mel B during the reunion tour. There's still sparks! The footage is a bit somber when you know the whole story.

Spice Girls was the best pop girl group and TLC the best r&b girl group.
Agreed and ironically it will never be the same again sadly with her gone.
Never be the same again was a huge hit in Europe. A shame it was never released in US.
Everyone knows how racist the world was in the 90's. TLC has a better and longer lasting legacy.
TLC was the girls group in America period.@@teijaflink2226
This is from Mel C's book
Mel B should forgive Geri because Geris mental health issues and eating problems truly were a valid reason and once U understand that it's easy to see why she felt like the girls didn't need her or want her because that's how depression takes over your mind.
Yeah…. Such a “boss move” which lead to iron clad contracts in subsequent years….. remember they answer their ad….. THEY PUT THEM TOGETHER…..
@@teijaflink2226it made geri so mad heartbroken when mel b announced her engagement with fellow backup dancer, thatʼs why geri left.
@@jeanetteadjei Geri really took the broken relationship she had with Mel B to heart. I feel bad for all of them.
Oh God…. That story of Geri leaving changes every 5 years…. “Lol I am so Bi” is in vogue now…. So of course that’s the reason now….
@@ItsaKindOfMagic86you call 12 years if your life a phase lol ?!!! he was my first love and he was the one who started all of it. by always finding a way for us to be naked by playing true or dare, showing off his buldge. mind you, i was only 14 to 15 when it started. he awoke my sexual side. i was young and very naive to life and sex when it started .. messed me up for the rest of my life. you cant possibly know everything just from my previous comment alone. he lives in his ego . his life is a lie.
Spiceworld never came crashing down. In 2007 they did a sold out world tour, in 2012 they performed to millions at the olympics and in 2019 they performed a UK and Ireland tour completely sold out. The demand for the spice girls is still there throughout the world. Spice world never crashed down!
Yes but their 90s impact was NEVER the same again......
Ok but they aren’t on the level you used to be and u cant deny that.
Isn’t it so funny that everyone thought it was Mel C who was into ladies? Lol
I thought that and she was my crush. Gosh, she is hot. This is shocking to find out. Never would have thought Geri and Mel B. It's all good. I love them all!
she was .. mel b and mel c were both spotted kissing women in the early 2000's. go look it up.
Geri revealed her relationship with Mel B in her autobiography.
I remember when Geri left, I cried soooo much. I still have my dolls, tapes, cds, pencils, photo album and other merch. I will always love the Spice Girls. ❤
play their playstation video game, you can play it on emulator if you can find it
Chris Evans yes I do you guys ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ is good news soon thanks you young and happy you just like me look good on Monday night you can find out now that we can do it tomorrow
I remember buying bubble gum to get their every sticker !!! They were like 10 cents (usd). I put every sticker above my bunk bed and on my folders.
As a 90’s kid, spice girls was the biggest thing when I was a kid!♥️😊
I can remember the devastation when geri left. And the enormous hate she got for that.
Most important as a child was to pick up which spice girl would you be in your friendgroup.😅
I had so much spice girls photos, you could collect!
Yes! I was baby spice for Halloween one year ❤
I remember that too, it was fun but as I was extremely shy I was always forced to be Victoria even if I didn't want to buy now I'm okay with it as I looked mostly like her and had similar hair. So nostalgic, I remember the school talent shows with almost all the girls doing Spice Girls one year.
@@teijaflink2226 😂
Spice girls are beyond nostalgic! 🇬🇧
Old but gold!💫👌
@@sherryberry4577 with blond hair and blue eyes I ended up being usually baby!😅♥️
40:57 clearly scary spice wasn’t lying how she reacted after she knew it was true and that she shouldn’t have said it bc it would hurt Gerrie
I don’t blame Geri for being angry. MelB outed her without her permission. And on Piers Morgan🗑️’s show no less.
It’s a big deal, very unnecessary and wrong of her to do that. My gay friend was murdered. Please never out someone without their permission.
@@Chibbykinsor it was simply a fase that many girls go through and it blew out of proportion...
@@blaah9999 I don't think she outed her, she just went through a phase that she got out of
I remember when they reunited in 2012 for the London Olympics, and it was just such fun.
Isn’t a lot of it worse nowadays though?
@@oooh19it’s probably just as bad with the added layer of social media
UGHHH!
So made me cry. TY!
That media shift is brutal. It happens so often with these popular groups
Ahh i am an absolute spice girls worshipper till this day i can’t tell you how excited i am for this video!!!
Geri was my FAVORITE and she left the group between the time I got tickets to see them and when they actually performed. I was HEARTBROKEN and heard some tiny things then that I held on to as to why she left. I'm so excited to actually hear the story.
that's so sad. I live in Finland and if I remember correctly Helsinki was the last concert where Geri performed with the others?
Main takeaways:
-What Geri did was so selfish ugh 😩 The Spice Girl era was truly a time to be alive. Too bad it for cut short 😢
-I never knew they wanted an all-white group 😒. Ironic how Scary was the first to be picked. I was her in my friend groups - would even wear my hair with the two buns in the front 🤣 Girl power ✌🏾🥹
So all black groups are fine, but all whites stents? Found the racist!!! Bigot!!!….🤡
I know right! The all-white group thing was surprising but kind of not in hindsight.
Only an antiwhite would have an issue with an all White british group.
it’s so weird i don’t remember them without geri. like obviously i know she left first but i don’t remember goodbye as not being with her, so weird
like the Mandela effect
I kinda remember but than again I was in 2nd thru 4th grade when spice mania was around 89 baby here
Finally! I was waiting for you guys to do a documentary about the Spice Girls! My childhood. Definitely the best girl group of all time.
Omfg this makes so much sense !!!!
Make it last forever, friendship never ends 💕
Ain’t it crazy that the producers of spice world predicted exactly what would happen in that movie with their career for the next two years?
That was unprofessional of Ginger Spice to just ditch her friends like that near the end of their European tour! I vaguely remember this. I hate when a member of a band or group does this, but the way she apologized about it publicly saved face.
she did the same thing to the people who gave her a chance, shes a backstabber
The Box.. now THAT is a throwback
Omg The Box! I used to beg my mom to let me call one song in lol
Yesss the Box!! It was the first time I saw The Backstreet Boys too!! The spice Girls and BSB BLEW my little 10 year old mind!!
This was the first time I saw Wannabe! On The Box

This was very well done! I'm sharing to all my cousins! We were big time fans of Spice Girls. Thank you!👏
The recent Channel 4 documentary really highlighted how burnt out they were by the start of 2000.
I was hooked from start to finish as the spice girls were such a huge part of my life growing up in the 90’s. Great video!
I love the Spice Girls without them many of us may have not naturally gravitated to our besties without the messaging they provided us with and that I am forever grateful for
as a lesbian i am very mad that this is my first time learning there was a sapphic relationship in the spice girls!!!!
me too 😭😭
Nothing has ever been documented this is just this channel making their own asumptions
@@Generalbas1972they literally addressed it at the end
No, it definitely was a story in the uk at the time, it was just joked about and mixed in with other "untrue" stories to keep names in the press... for example, they said that one of the lads from Take That was dating Geri.... he wasn't, but it got press just before his album dropped. The uk tabloids and the celebs played a big game in those days
@@OlafavonGoeding i picked it up as a teenager because of the looks they gave each other
I loved The Spice Girls & "Spice World!" I had it on VHS, & would play it often! I wanted their platform boots or whatever they were. I loved all the songs. My friend had a Scary Spice doll. I was too young, but I had no idea about Mel B. & Geri being a thing.
I can't believe how short the Spice Girls era actually was
This is a wonderfully edited and beautifully done documentary!
Same. We had an amazing childhood
We played Spice Girls every day on the playground! 😂
What a dick 😂
I was 9 and she was my favorite.
It was my first concert and it was still amazing but i was sad she wasnt there.
My whole room was deck out in spice girls posters. Spice girls everything. they truly were a phenomenon, and there will always be a special place in my heart for them. Still have all my original spice girls dolls on display.
It was my first heartbreak too, not long after one of my pets passed away to top it off >

❤
90s were peak arts and entertainment. I went downhill after that, especially when social media came on the scene. I miss those days.
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS! They were such a huge part of my childhood!
I was obsessed with Spice Girls!! Thank you Shelby for this DEEP DIVE 💖💖💖💖💖 If you wanna be my lover✨✨✨✨✨
The sheer production of these videos is outstanding
that was really well done!!
top notch production value
well reported.. masterful editing.. thanks for sharing this story.. you did an amazing job!!
This is pure nostalgia. I remember having the Spice Girls dolls, and me and my friends use to perform the movie scenes for our parents 😂😂
If only the movie Spice World was available to stream on RUclips or Amazon Prime… 😩🙏🏼
I would loooovveeee if you covered Little Mix and what happened with them
Little Mix was the next biggest girl group in the UK after The Spice Girls so when we also had them split, it was a big blow so definitely want to know what happened there
Completely agree, also maybe a look into Girls Aloud.
I never realized just how meteoric their rise was and how short-lived they were as a group.
My God thank you for this video 🥹😍 the Spice Girls were my childhood and watching this had me in such sweet nostalgia 🥺😍🥹🫶🏽✨✨✨✨
Not everything is about race 🙄
I completely understand your point but I can tell you,as a girl who was growing up listening to Spice Girls it never crossed my mind she's called "scary spice" because she's black. It was because she was this strong, outgoing and as you said,a bit wild person.
Thinking about it now,"scary" is a bit... unfortunate either way. They could nickname her "wild spice" or something.
Here we go.. God you're insufferable
Right, never liked that at all😭
Same!!!
I never paid that much attention too spice girls but learning more about them I have maddd respect for them
Wow great video!
Thank for making this, I saw them live a few years ago it was amazing they are a big part of my childhood!
