Why is the Rolex Double Red So Valuable? - Sea-Dweller 1665 | Watchfinder & Co.

  • Wearing his Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 Double Red, diver Jacques Verpeaux dove the unimaginable depth of 501 metres in 1977. At just 30 metres below the water's surface, the nitrogen that makes up 78% of our breathable air will get you high. Like laughing gas. At 40 metres, the mellow high starts to degrade, and narcosis begins to set in. You're sleepy, disorientated. Down to 60 metres, and now the oxygen is toxic as well. That's when the seizures begin. At 100 metres, you're most likely... unalive. This is the story of how Jacques stretched the realm of possibility.

    Nice Video. I am the original owner of a 1665 Double Red, and dove this watch to 310m (1,000 fsw) on April 23, 1974 while working for Oceaneering International and the US Navy Experimental Diving Unit. We didn't publicize the dive at the time as we were developing Navy technology for use in Undersea Warfare. Just thought you might like to know. By the way, I still wear this watch regularly.

    Sorry, I don’t quite understand. I understand about the “bends” in human beings, we are organic and compressible, but surely the air inside the watch does not become compressed? Unless the water leaks in of course.....

    • @goldendawn7
      @goldendawn7 6 лет назад

      Helium particles are small enough to leak into a watch under pressure. When the watch returns to the surface they get less compress and have to come out.

      High end watches have basically become fancy jewelry for men with a lot of money that want to show off how much $$$$ they can throw away (bait for golddiggers!). Virtually everyone carries a phone with accurate time that automatically changes with moving across time zones. And an inexpensive Casio diver ($49 Amazon) can handle the diving needs of 99.99999% of the people who want to swim and dive while wearing a watch. I do get very tired of rich guys who try to justify their expensive purchase by saying nonsense like, 'Well, if I accidentally fall into the water while wearing my nice watch, it won't be ruined'. Idiots. Most good watches are pretty waterproof up to a reasonable swimming depth for short periods. I like to suggest diving off of a ship to see just how long their nice expensive watch will stay waterproof as they paddle towards the shore from the middle of the ocean.
