- Decidi legendar em português esse vídeo porque para nós latinos, fica mais difícil buscar traduções e letras das obras européias e também porque um belíssimo trabalho como esse merece ser apreciado com detalhes.
Erlkönig (Rei dos Elfos) é um poema de Goethe musicado por Schubert. É composto por quatro pesonagens, o narrador, a criança, o pai e o Rei dos Elfos (a morte) e retrata o desespero de uma criança ao ver a morte se aproximando para buscá-la.
Há duas possibilidades de interpretação: a primeira, que o pai está levando ou voltando do médico com seu filho doente. A segunda, sugere que o pai, de fato, ignora sem querer as visões do filho face à morte.
É uma peça densa, que exige do cantor e pianista intensa dramaticidade para interpretar essas quatro personagens numa só canção, como faz com muita propriedade e requinte, Jessye Norman nesse vídeo.

Her Elf King voice was by far the most Elf King voice I've ever heard. I think a lot of people have trouble making it so ethereal, especially in comparison with the father voice.
Perfect enunciation, quite impressive for a non-German singer.
Remember that Schubert died at the age of 31. What a masterpiece.

No one understands this song better than Ms. Norman. "Erlkönig" should be scary! Norman is living this song, not just interpreting it. I agree with "Bass Man Xan" -- Ms. Norman changes her tone so that you know whether it is the father or the child. Brava!

Pois é. Eu tive o grande prazer de ouvir essa artista maravilhosa aqui mesmo em Salvador. Recebeu a todos depois na saída do Teatro. Durante o concerto, regeu a platéia, que cantou com ela "Amazing Grace".

@@negative_creep2581 Não foi Goethe que traduziu errado, foi Gottfried von Herder, que traduziu "Eller" como "Erle", mudando o original, de Rei dos Elfos para rei dos álamos.
Errado. Erlkönig vem de Ellenkonge, que, sem sombra de dúvidas, significa "Rei dos Elfos".

Existem mais interpretações, na verdade. Existe a primeira e mais literal que o menino está adoecido e tendo alucinações com o rei dos elfos.
A segunda, sugere a pedofilia e estupro, em que o Rei dos Elfos e um assediador e que o pai ignora completamente.
A terceira é mais Intuitiva e trata que a criança não é uma criança em si, mas sim a infância, que começa som jogos e flores na praia, evolui para a sedução das menininhas e o pai ignora até que, sem que o pai perceba, a "criança" já esteja morta.
