I’m on one now- the richness of her voice the deftness of her phrasing… sublime. Her diction and pronounciation- her breath control- what a Diva!! Please listen to her sing Dido’s Death scene by Purcell as well as Strauss The Four Last Songs and her singing Mahler and Wagner - just to die for
sometime as fragile as thin golden silk, sometime it is pouring golden rain, never disappoint, the depth of her artistry and hard work digging into the role, is top gold standard, what a loss to operatic world. True artist.
Even without being a staged production, I love how she just lets herself get lost in the music and the character. Oh, and that control. I love that everything's not just on full blast. Not because she can't, but because she uses it for the right moments. Oh the subtleties she brings to her performances. *swoon*
Somehow it's always the sopranos who get all the hype, but for me it's the mezzo that does it! Her MON COEUR S'OUVRE from Samson and Dalilah gives me goosebumps every time! And that lovely Habanera quite late in her career: gorgeous!
I think Jessye Norman's version, is truly The Best! She has the perfect voice range for this song. The rich quality and the love, she puts, into it. So beautiful~ 🍃🌹🍃
BARBARA FLORES: You are SO VERY RIGHT. Well, it does "help" that I think exactly the same thing as you do, LOL! Because to me, JESSY NORMAN'S version is also the BEST.
Anyone else notice how aazong her breath control is here? She sings this at an extraordinarily slow tempo, and still, she breezes straight through points where virtually every other singer (singing at the much faster standard tempo at that) have to pause to take a breath.
I had the chance to watch this show in a cultural channel in Mexico city a long long time ago, and I've been looking for this for years, cause I love it. It's such a pleasure to see it again. I wish there would be a DVD of this extraordinary artists' performance.
This is just soo beautiful.. i love the song, its such a wonderful song but her voice is so amazing it makes me cry every time. i wish i could see her in person
Me recordo quando assisti o VHS dessa fabulosa gravação da Carmen. Era, salvo engano, início de 1990. O tempo passa, mas as boas recordações sempre ficam. Descanse em paz Jessye Norman; você fez a diferença!
I used to watch documentaries about Jessye all the time on public television. What a gorgeous soul! Beauty really is an internal thing, and Jessye projected it in every song she sang. She was so cultured, eloquent, flawless in her execution, and beautiful. What a woman! In one of the scenes she looked so smug in her fur while she was waiting for her cue from Pavarotti. (This was back in the day before the PC madness when it was ok for women to wear fur and to just enjoy being feminine and ladylike.) I miss the days of yore. [Some things are just indescribably beautiful, and forever frozen in time by memory.] She had a gift that comes only from the Supernal. So sad that she's gone. I love her. I love her voice and her music and her passion, gratitude, and humility for God and for life. Thank you, Jessye, for this beautiful music that is a disappearing part of our culture.
I think this is the clearest rendition of "Habanera" I have ever heard. Every note is emited with the perfect precision which is very, very rare in this aria (listen to admired Elina Garanca, how flat and colourless she is in her rendition available on YT). Maybe the tempo is too slow, which undoubtedly helps with smoothing every single note, but in general the result is amazing. Jessie Norman and Maria Callas are the best performers of this aria. Callas, singing in much faster tempo, is brilliant!
Cómo desciende su tesitura al registro de la mezzo, como frasea, como marca el tiempo, con cuánta facilidad mantiene el color, que mujer más profesional esta.
Awesome videobyte! So happy to have found this on RUclips! Thank you for the fond memories of the vocals of Miss Leontyne Price. What divine vocals she have!
"Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life. The one who exercises Faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life; and everyone that is living and exercises Faith in me will never die at all. Do you believe this?" (John 11: 25,26) RIP Madam
Gotta eat a big wonderful meal, like a 20 ounce prime rib at Morton's, then come home to pour a glass of 30 year aged brandy, then light a wonderful dark, complex Maduro cigar, say a Comacho Triple Maduro. Sit back, puff bit, sip a bit, and let Diva Norman's equally rich, and complex voice take us away. Now life is good.
I cannot judge her french, but believe that languages must have been a major talent of hers, because as a native speaker I can judge her German and it is fantastic too
@@stefanwild326 amazingly, Jessye Norman never sang in a language she didn’t speak. She was known to speak at least English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Czech
@wTrevorh Did you not notice all the microphones around? It's obviously a recording session. Operas are rarely recorded as true live performances for albums. There's almost always a studio recording. Hardly a waste of time...this is magnificent work from all involved!
wonderful as music and role. my favorite habanera. one has to yield to the music, not looking for the uptempo flash perhaps necessary in a full performance. I think of ravel's 'bolero ', and how he wanted it as slow as possible. music issound, and good sound has texture, like a media in the flow, gripping and pulling the ear into the stream.
It’s remarkable that she can pull of such a restrained mezzo role as excellently as she does here, but I feel like Jessye shines brighter as a Wagnerian soprano-see her O hehrstes Wunder! or her magnificent Dido’s Lament. Jessye as Carmen feels a bit like driving a Rolls Royce in first gear: wonderful and luxurious but with tons of unused power
2 hours into a Jessye Norman rabbit hole - wonderful reminders of why I love love love that voice so much.

She had such a great tone and her voice was instantly recognizable. Cannot be said for many or most opera singers.
you put my thoughts to words

Whatever she sang was perfection!
Jessye Norman, you are now in heaven, but your voice remains in our hearts forever.
The angels choir would have signed her up immediately upon her arrival in Heaven.

Together with Callas she's one of the rare sopranos who can ding this right, in mezzo register, thanks to her specific voice. Well donne, Jessye!
The heavens gained a wonderful voice in their angel's choir
Everyone who treasured her artistry should listen, now, to her recording of Strauss' Four Last Songs.
Yes. Yes. Powerful!

According to French commentators on other RUclips videos, her French is perfect!
