Just found this, and omg, what a fantastic way to do curved seams without worrying about the stretch on the bias and coming up too short. That technique is too cool. Thank you both for sharing this!
I purchased the ruler and laser cut freezer paper. I just did my first 2 orange peels they came out perfect and it was so easy. I’m going to really enjoy making this quilt. Thank you so much. ❤
Wow awesome quilt! I love how it appears to look like 2 different patterns depending on the eye! At first I thought it was 2 different blocks really cool!
Full disclosure: Bethany is my sister so I am biased. One thing that Bethany and our mother had in common, is that they both have this incredible skill to make extraordinarily beautiful things that look complicated but are actually not that difficult to make, because of their clever design. One thing that Bethany has all on her own an amazing eye for color choice. Bethany would design these incredible patterns and quilts, and then she would make them absolutely spectacular because of the beautiful fabric choices that she would make. One thing that Bethany didn’t point out in this video is that this pattern is also a subtle way to help teach quilters who aren’t great with color how to use color combinations more confidently. Make the blocks, lay them out, move them around: not every block is going to be amazing. But some will be and the end result will be. I watched this entire video and really enjoyed it. Miss you Bethany! Take care of her, Shabby!
Welcome Bethany! Awesome easy looking quilt pattern. I will have to try this. I am almost sure it's not as easy as you make it look. Thanks for the tutorial Shabby Fabrics!
Thank you for the warm welcome for Bethany! We're happy she's here creating with us. We're glad you enjoy this fun block design. Thanks for watching! 💖 -Michelle
Hi Jennifer, thanks for the welcome! I'm so happy to be a part of Team Shabby and I can't wait to share new techniques and tutorials with you. 💖 -Bethany
I have been quilting for years and this is the first time I have seen this method. Wished I had known this before. My Drunkard Path quilt would have been so much easier. Thanks for sharing.
I love this technique ! I’ve never stitched flannel before so I’ve just ordered some. Can I get a glass of what ever you’re having never seen you so giggly
We're glad that our fun tutorial has inspired you! We just enjoy showcasing different techniques and love our wonderful Shabby Fabrics team members. Thank you for watching! 💖 -Michelle
I have only sewn curves under duress, and it was for boat upholstery. When I first saw this in my notifications I thought there is no way I'll ever sew that but love to watch someone else sew curves. Now I can't wait to try this! Thank you for moving my comfort zone! Smart gal that Bethany. Glad you got her to commit to other shows.
Love this pattern. Just ordered my items from Plum Easy (Just wish the pattern was available in Digital Form). I live in Alaska so this will make an awesome FLANNEL quilt I will treasure forever!! I have loads of flannel fabric couldn't decide what pattern to use. I love this!! I am a beginner but think I can do this if I go slow. Fingers crossed.
Happy that you love this project! You are going to have a lot of fun and there is no rush. Take your time and have fun! We appreciate your support and comment! - Abby
I wasn’t sure at first if I would like this technique. But I am glad I watched it through. I put the tools on my shopping list. I bet this would work with layer cakes. I love it in the flannels. Can’t wait to try it.
Love this technique so much @BethanyMiller! I am all about finding ways to make block construction easier (aka: Less Stressful). Thank you for the warm welcome for Bethany! We look forward to more of her fun tutorials. Quilting can definitely be a soothing escape and we are glad you choose it! Thank you for watching. 💖 -Michelle
I love this quilt! I paused video after I saw the first block and ordered the essentials. While it’s too warm in Va for flannel, a quilt using this pattern is definitely in my future! How exciting!
We're very glad this project has inspired you! We look forward to seeing what you create with the Orange Blossom block. Thanks for watching! 💜-Michelle
welcome Bethany!!!! Love your attitude about curves. I'm looking forward to working with your die-cut freezer paper templates, what a great tool for those who want to jump right in.
This is so clever. Love the innovative approach. Bethany is a great asset to your team❗ And I really love you guys using flannel fabrics. Could you maybe in the future show us how to cut, baste and quilt with Minky on the back of a quilt? Thanks.
Thank you for the welcoming words. I love the idea of Minky on the back of a quilt. As of right now, we don't have any tutorials with Minky because it's not a product we sell, but I will pass your suggestion along to the creative team. 💖-Bethany
Wowwww! While I have never sewn “my first quilt” (even though I’ve sewn evening & office attire, children’s clothing to soft home furnishings) the mere thought of trying to quilt curves scared the daylights out of me…😳😬 literally!!! Yet this pattern, with all of its wonderful tricks, hints and tips has me so excited to give this one a whirl in the very near future!!! 👍🏻❤️✂️ Thank you! Jo

This is a wonderful video. Thank you! I love Bethany's technique and Jennifer and Bethany are so good together! I understand that the orange blossom ruler is 7" square. What is the length and width of the finished orange peel? I'm considering this pattern for Tilda's Hibernation fabric and want to be sure I get a good view of all the little critters.
Hi Kathy - We’re glad you enjoy this fun design! Each petal, sewn into the square block should measure approximately 7.75” long and the widest portion of the petal measures about 2.75” wide. Hope this helps! -Michelle
Loved the tutorial! Ordered and received my quilt kit today and I can’t wait to get started! I have a question about using the glue stick…..should I use a special needle? I have never seen flannel and need needle size and if I need the non stick needle…..don’t want to gum up or ruin my new machine…..thanks so much!
Hi Glenda, I pieced this entire quilt with a Microtex needle, but have pieced other variations of this pattern with universal needles and with Super Nonstick needles, and have found there to be no significant difference between the needles for this project. As long as the glue is dry, which should only take 60-90 seconds, there shouldn't be any problem with the school glue interacting with the needle or your machine. Hope this helps! 💖-Bethany
Great question. Unfortunately, that would not work with this method. The block must be squared up before the snowball corners are added. But the good news is that the block shouldn't need to be squared up again after the snowballs are added! 💖-Bethany

Flannel shrinks so much so just wanted to know if you prewashed/preshrunk everything? I would totally make this quilt for those cold Minnesota nights. Bethany Miller is a completely talented designer and I love that she thinks outside the box.
Hi Brenda - We didn't prewash this flannel prior to creating this project. We typically don't prewash our fabrics, but some people do prefer to do that. Now, if you're mixing cotton and flannel fabrics, please do prewash those. Hope this helps! And yes, we are so blessed by Bethany's creative mind :) -Michelle

Hi Bethany - I have all my squares made and am currently sewing my blocks together and they are soooo pretty!!!! Do you have any tips for lining up the magic corners when assembling? Im struggling with the open seam. I'd appreciate any tips you have!!!
Snowball corners can be tricky if the squares are not all lined up perfectly before sewing them. The only thing that Bethany says is to match up the points. Here are some tips that we have - pin well, starting with the corner. If they are slightly off, finger press one seam opposite from the other so they will nest. Start sewing at the "Magic Corner"; your fabric is less likely to shift as you sew the entire seam. Hope this helps and happy that you are enjoying this project! - Abby

- Abby
