- I went back to visit family for the holidays and decided to take the train. It has been on my bucket list for a while and I found a great deal. We took the VIA Rail train departing from Vancouver and arriving outside of Edmonton.

Oh, I forgot to explain the black eye haha. For those that haven’t seen on Facebook or Instagram I slipped on the ice and smashed my head pretty bad. Wish it was a better story, but it’s all healed up now. I'm overdue for some stealth camping so I've got one planned next if all goes well. Cheers!
Ouch! I'm glad you're okay.
All the best, great adventure!
That’s a good story…
Yay to stealth camping! Glad your eye is better!
"Yeah, but you should see the other guy" ... be safe Steve
This proves it wasn't the camping that keeps bringing me back, it is simply sharing in your adventures. I've never been on a train, this was such an interesting experience.
Heartwarming comment
I started my full-time adventures after losing my 35yo husband and "you may never get the chance" was one of the big reasons I started traveling full-time. 😔 I hope you are finding the beautiful peace you deserve! ❤️
I can't say I understand that loss, I hope you find what you are looking for and always know that you're never alone. There is good moments and lots of love out there. See you down the line. ❤️🍻🏕
Ah Steve.. You have completely convinced me to get off my ass and Do the things I said I will do but putting off xx
That’s good.
I’m about that age and if my wife dies I’ll be poor with two kids. No hope of travel or ticking off bucket lists. We’ll have to move into an apartment and hope my kids can get scholarships since we’ll have half the income. How do you do it? Big policy? No kids? We probably need to get life insurance is what I’ve learned from all this.
@@2nd-place what has worked for us wouldn't work for many (most?) people, and it's not been easy, but it's been what's made us happy. I had four kids with him (newborn twins, 9y & 11y when he passed) and there was no life insurance (he had just gone to work for his best friend's new company). How we got here is a long story but we're "poor" monetarily and live on his social security. We go without a lot of what others may call important but we just appreciate what we do have more than worry about what we don't. The short answer of how we live cheap and travel is that we have lived in an RV since 2016. Would having had a life insurance policy made life much easier? Maybe... Maybe not. That's all I can say about that. Did it ruin us to not have one? Some would say yes, some no.
I can't tell anyone what they should or can do but I can say that I thought I would be finished if he died. I wish he hadn't died, of course, but I'm far from finished.
Wishing you all the best! ❤️
@@2nd-place oh, I should mention that my mom passed away in 2017 and I was left a little insurance money for a small nest egg and some bonus travel but we were doing it before then.
I'm enjoying these "not quite camping" episodes. They show us all things about Canada we're not real familiar with and it's most appreciated.
May we all have a “ crazy neighbor “ during our darkest days ❤️
I have one and he is my roommate. ;)
Absolutely thank you to all the people giving Steve such great support.
I am the crazy neighbor. 😂
Right? My girlfriend says the same thing.
Amen.
3:11 "I'm no longer putting things over for some day, in the future. I'm taking care of things now..." This is very well said and hit particularly close. I'm happy to see you getting out and doing some living Steve.
I still have over half million travel miles but my travel companion is gone on a trip that I can’t accompany him on, yet. When I go the trip will be free and someone else can inherit my travel miles✝️
Beautifully said.
My heart broke a little. Damn.
Once again, RIP Beautiful Wife
@@cybersal7 That's how I've felt since my dad died. I'm right behind you, pop.
Steve, I ran into you in Jasper as you were on your way to Vancouver. Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to talk and being the same guy I have watched online as you are in person. My wife made fun of me for days.... lol I guess it showed on my face how excited I was. You are an amazing person, thank you for all you do to entertain all of us.
Very nice! I would love to run into Steve (and Crazy Neighbor) one day! Being Stateside, the chances are slim. However, I'll keep my spidey sense turned just in case. lol. seems like a swell guy!
Ignored!!!
With my 'rail geek' hat on, a bit of info for you about the red lights - a railway signal will turn to red as soon as the lead cab and driver pass it, so it'd be green (or yellow) for them when it's passed, but red by the time you, as a passenger, pass it.
Love the video - a long-distance rail trip across Canada on the sleepers is also on my bucket list, despite living in the UK! And this has just furthered my desire to do it!
thank you for taking the time to explain that! I've always wanted to take a long trip on a train through somewhere scenic!
Hey Steve, love the videos! Former railroader here; the lights change to red once the lead of the train go through, which is why it appears you're running red lights from further back in the train. Looks like a fun journey, definitely a bucket list item!! Cheers!
Appreciate you explaining that to us! Onwards Steve!
As the son of a railroad maintenance man, the delay was probably a broken rail.
At this point, I think Steve could do a video on cleaning his house and I would watch it uninterrupted. That friendly, engaging demeanor is why we keep coming back...and seeing him smile again, knowing the grief he's had to carry these last few months, is like the icing on top!
Well said!
Everyone handles their grief differently. It warms my heart to see your follow through on you and your wife's plans. I'm sure she's looking at you go and proud of you enjoying your life. Happy trails partner!

You are hands down one of the coolest campers (albeit, unconventional, lol) I subscribe to. I never leave likes or comments, but I want you to know that I'm a US veteran that has been diagnosed with PTSD years ago and camping and the wilderness is what helped me stay sane. Channels like yours inspire me to remain vigilant and enjoy this beautiful world.
Please keep on trucking with your crazy content, you're a very inspiring guy, through your years posting.this. Thank you, truly.
Weekly reminder that we love you Steve! So happy that crazy neighbor has been keeping you company!
I like how he's going through the train cars like he's in a horror movie, talking about how salmon and vegetarian stuff is too weird for him.
Salmon and vegetarian , love it , please gimme.
I'm picky eater too. So I understand!
@@johntitor1984 Honestly, I don't know what you mean by that. I am more curious about your name. Have you time traveled lately?
@@johntitor1984 no

Others have mentioned it but the signals go from green/yellow as soon as the front of the train enters the block. Hence why you're always seeing red

“That’s cute and everything, but let’s go find a bar”…. Never change Steve! Here’s to more adventures!
Definitely one of my favorite parts of traveling by train 😂
Steve, you just brought tears to my eyes. I'm so sorry things are the way they are, but you have a great attitude and can help so many with your strength! Your videos really have so much meaning now! Keep up the great work!
I love that the engineer agreed to just stop in the middle of nowhere to let them off--only Steve & Crazy Neighbor could get them to agree to do that! And welcome on camera to Crazy Neighbor's "lady friend"! Hope we'll be seeing more of her on some journeys too!
the town evensburg has like 1500 people. i used to live there lol safe as houses
Surprisingly, the Canadian train will stop basically anywhere you want, if you give them enough notice ahead of time.
@buddygirl... i lived there for 2 weeks and got robbed 3 times and murdered 7 times... So maybe not as safe as you say?
Steve At 13:45 I felt your loneliness and your missing the lovely wife, the regret of not taking her on the trip with you when you had the chance, I could hear it in your voice and see it in your eyes! You have to realize though that God has a ticket for all of us and punches it at a certain predetermined time that he needs us back home! If there is any bright side at all it is your wife did not suffer! As you put it, she went to bed and didn't wake up which is the way I'd want anyone that I love to go if they have to go before me. Watching her suffer from cancer or some other terrible disease would have been much harder for you and for her so in a way I do believe God loves you and was watching out for both of you! So my best advice would be to keep doing what you're doing and that is making these RUclips videos and seeing new things and going on with your life and remembering that you will see her once again someday when it's your time!
P.S. Yes I did write this while having a lengthy step two! Sometimes that's when all of the honesty comes out! 🙂
"You might not get the chance to do these things."
That hit close to home. I was depressed for years and have "missed out" on a lot of things, I felt dead inside. These days I try to live every day as if it was my last.
You've helped me through some of my darkest days and I am sincerely thankful for you being here on planet Earth while I am around to join in on your adventures on the other side of the world.
I wish you all the best, Steve.

Hey Steve, I am an engineer for Amtrak and was one for FNBS. Have loved your videos for years. The reason the signals are all "red" when you go by them is because they "drop" when the engines pass them. Once the leading end of the movement passes the signal it goes from "clear" or whatever aspect it is displaying to its default of "stop" (red). Love the video, its also on my bucket list!

I'm surprised Steve did not bring a couple of MRE's and heater packs for the trip
he was better prepared for the return trip...

This brings back a lot of childhood memories for me, we always used to ride these trains (dome cars and all) between Toronto and Quebec City back when they had a fancier level of service on this route. It's amazing to think that the dome car you were sitting in might have been one of the same ones I was in 40 years ago..

I'm thrilled you had the opportunity to experience this Steve. People travel from all over the world to experience train travel in Canada. It is such a shame it is so expensive. If you ever have the opportunity to travel on VIA again, I highly recommend the route between Jasper and Prince Rupert. Also, the Rocky Mountaineer train is a fun luxury tour. It's much more expensive than VIA but worth the trip. Thank you for continuing to make these videos for us!
Hey Steve, love a good train vid :) So you know and can sleep better, you weren't running red signals. It's generally only the driver that sees the green signal because as soon as the first set of wheels on the first bogey goes past the pole, the signals change to red. You were nowhere near the front of the train, so only saw red lights as you went past.
It’s called “knocking down”.
@@suspicionofdeceit Thanks for all the technical information. I did not know that!
Thanks for the info!!! 🤪
Went to the comments for this info
The way they do this is the sections of track are electrically isolated from one another and there is a voltage applied across the two rails. The train completes the circuit across the rails to indicate there is something on that section of track.
This reply has a very important purpose that might save a life one day. Whenever there is a section of track with a road crossing, the crossing guards and signals are tied into this system. A car which has stalled on the tracks does not complete the circuit, so the train has a green signal, and by the time they see the car on the track, they don't have enough stopping distance to avoid hitting it. If a vehicle is stuck on the tracks, grab a set of jumper cables and connect them from one rail to another. This will turn the signals red on that section of track. The crossing signal and guard will activate too, so don't panic, it is you that is doing it.
A little bonus from this: the railroad has a central traffic control center where they monitor all of the trains. They know there is not supposed to be anything on that section of track, yet there is and you have stopped all of the traffic there. If you have no communications, don't worry because someone has been dispatched to investigate.
Man, Steve is saying some powerful things and taking powerful actions as he moves on. What a strong and inspiring dude
The train, coast to coast, over those crazy passes out west, that's one of my bucket list items too. Love Canada and trains
Glad you got crazy neighbor to keep you busy with adventures Steve. Camping in itself is about adventure so, even though this was a train, I still thought it was a cool adventure. My dad is fighting cancer and he reminds me all the time that if you have something you want to do, do it while you have the health and ability. Soon you won’t have one or the other. Get out there and DO those things. LIVE your life to the fullest. Safe travels Steve. Hope 2023 is great for you.
Hello Steve from Kansas! Just so you know, the signals turn red as the locomotive passes. This keeps trains behind you from getting too close. Enjoy!
I love seeing Steve get recognized. Just shows how many of us who love you are out here

To everyone on and involved in the channel, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you. Thank you for giving us joy and laughter in the darkest days. Since typing this made me tear up, I needed to put in a Trailer Park Boys quote that helped me keep a sliver of brevity through a very similar point in my life. 'Fuckin' way she goes, boys.'

Amazing trip, I’m sure BW was with you in spirit - great approach to life as well, do it now whist you still can.
As for running red lights, as the power car with the driver passes the signal (at green) it would have instantly changed to red, and being so far back down such a long train that is what you were seeing.
Many thanks once again, and best wishes for the new year ahead to you all.

The aesthetics of that train amazes me. It has the thin metal efficient hallways of a naval ship; yet the observation deck of a starship out of Star Trek. Such a sight to behold.
Hey Steve and crazy neighbour
Hey!
"And I'm hoping it'll be cathartic, 'coz I'm no longer putting things over for someday in the future. I'm taking care of things NOW, because we've had a poignant example of what can happen when you don't live everyday to the fullest - you might not get to do these things."
Steve, even before this video and saying this you have been inspiring people to do exactly that - to live their life to the fullest and take chance to do things they've always dreamed of. Last year, I bought a small camper and your camping videos were a very big part of the inspiration for me to quit waiting until "someday" and just go do it NOW. I've had some amazing experiences already giving me memories to last the rest of my days and I look forward to making more of those memories.
Thank you for all the wonderful content you post that inspires people to step out of their comfort zone and go adventuring!!! All blessings upon you and may the road always rise up to meet you!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Never stop Steve, always forward!
Another great trip, Stev. I have to agree with the "not putting things off." My beautiful wife passed away suddenly just before Christmas and the day before my birthday. There are many things I wish we had gotten to do together. As always, stay strong.
This brought back many memories for me. I used to ride Amtrak across Wisconsin with my sons. Our favorite place to be was in the sky car (viewing car) when it would roll through Tunnel City, WI. To keep the little ones entertained I would point out the mini-hippos (pigs), the short necked giraffes (Ayrshire and Guernsey cattle) and spotted zebras (Appaloosa horses). The Amish kids sitting near us would listen in and laugh along with us. So much silliness and joy. Thank you Steve and Crazy Neighbor for sharing. Wishing all of you, including Crazy Neighbor Lady, the best for the coming year.
"Mini-hippos, short-necked giraffes and spotted zebras". Such a great way to keep your little ones entertained. They were lucky to have you for a parent.
In 1990 I took the 4 day trans Canadian train from Toronto to Vancouver. Awesome journey, we disembarked at Edmonton for a few days. The train would stop, on request, if 2 passengers wanted to get off. I remember it stopping adjacent to an indigenous camp were the houses were constructed from corrugated iron. The trains were ginormous and had the observation carriages. Even the central plains were beautiful; plus I remember travelling through the rockies imagining all the bears hiding behind the undergrowth.
Glad to see you doing well Steve! Thanks for all you do for us!
Aweh, Steve, your voice cracking up talking about your dream to go with Jess, made me tear up. I wish I could give you a hug, man. I'm so glad you got to do it. Jess would have wanted you to still enjoy these adventures ❤️
Steve, once the front of the train is past a signal, it turns red. Depending on location of signal also regulates which track it is for.
In Britain at least, it's usually less than a second between the front of a train passing a green signal & it turning red, partly to protect the train that's just gone onto that section of track
Thank you!
Steve thanks for sharing & so glad your healing up.
Brilliant so glad you took the trip Steve and shared it with us ,awesome !
The dynamic duo on a train…I love it! Always love a new video.
Reading your post just made me think of "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" for a good laugh.
It is good to see you doing something different. I feel it adds to your adventures.
Glad you’re living life to the fullest Steve, the sights you captured looked absolutely beautiful.
Ha, stay healthy and upright Steve we need your episodes of escape dearly. Cheers on you, and keep kicking ass in the new year! Much love from the masses!
Anyone else just watch train trips like this. I find it sooooo relaxing. Great video Steve.
Steve I did this trip from Ontario to BC and Back as a Kid. Looks exactly the same 15+ Years later. The Red Signals is because your train engine tripped them the second you went over it. So if you got closer to the front you would see them green.
Edit: I just want to say, I'm glad they still do the crazy random stops. We stopped in a random farmer field in BC when we went haha. Closest to our family there.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Steve! Thanks for being there for us viewers. Your vids have been a great comfort for me, through some of my own challenges. I'll continue tagging along on your journeys, while living mine the best I can.
Watching your videos always brings me wholesome vibes. Been with you for a few years and I plan to be here with you as long as you make videos Steve. Thank you for all that you do.
How can the words “Time to go see garbage!” not warm your heart? 💚 I can imagine the love he got when you walked through that door.
Your friendship with Crazy Neighbor is some of the best media I've seen in years. I'm sure you don't always agree on things I can tell but damn you guys have each other's back. It's beautiful. All my best friends like that who are more my brothers than my actual brothers live across the country from me and I miss them dearly. Won't even get into how my actual family treats me because of a personal medical decision, that sentence alone has those in my position perking up thinking "ohhh I know man, I know! I feel you....".....and God bless those people. God bless you two as well. You're bringing joy to the world. Thank you.
Glad to see you going forward and doing things that you have been wanting to do. I enjoy following along. I look forward to your next adventure. Best wishes.
Love this video and your positive outlook on life. Thanks for posting and allowing us to follow along, even if we're sitting in a van, having lunch, next to a construction site.
