didnt realise it was such a big job and would explain a new clutch engine mounts transmission work etc plus a huge bill at the end of it all. Great video
@@SuperRon i have a 2004 R32 and the previous owner spent well over $25000 NZ dollars on timing chain, clutch water pump and heaps of other stuff which is more then i paid for the car but runs like a dream. cheers
Very nice, I've just converted that to £ and that's had a lot spent. But as you see from the video they're very labour intensive to do anything on so the Bill's soon add up! But well worth it in the end!
Yeah, a lot of good mechanics do say if you're changing the timing chain that you should also change the clutch and flywheel as they already have easy access to it whilst changing the timing chain and also it'll save you money on labour costs.
Just got to the half way point of this video and I gotta say your a pro man I woulda been cussing up a storm and been about ready to throw in the towel. I gotta imagine this is an extremely expensive repair

Does it already have a new head gasket? With the block out of the car, why not do the head gasket at the same time? Its maybe 3 hours more work now vs 20 hours eventually.
These aren't prone to headgasket failures, so it's not something to replace just for the sake of it. But yes like you say we are pretty much there at this point.
Just curious, how did the plastic guides look when you tore into it? I have a clutch ready for my mk4, I might as well do the chains as well. I will be pulling the motor for sure.
The guides weren't too bad, it had a tiny rattle on start up which is why we did them, but nothing was dangerously low. It's worth doing it all while it's out.
@@SuperRon yeah, I’m at 209,000 miles on my r32. Original clutch, chains. I have no rattles on start up I’ve checked measuring blocks in vcds to tip me off on any stretching (which would be from the guides) and the degrees appear to be with in tolerance still. But I might as well do it if I’m doing the clutch.
Fantastic, I have an MK4 R32 which could do with the same amount of work, how long did it take. I’m think of doing it myself, and taking the engine out is definitely the way forward. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching. The whole thing including the chains and service took 2 days, about 16 hours. I could probably do it alot quicker knowing what I do now as shown in the video.
@@davidfrisby2170 I've done it on my golf mk4 2.8 VR6 engine with the engine still in the car, can recommend taking out the engine completely, getting to the bolts was a pain in the ass

It was a couple of years ago now but I think it was around 2 days all told with everything, it does soon escalate with everything else that needs doing at the same time

Hi Ron I’m looking to do this to my car and was wondering if you have a parts list which I can use to buy all the necessary parts , I’m looking to do basically what you did and am wondering what new bolts and gaskets I will need , thanks
Pretty straight forward video, thanks a lot. I have 1 question regarding the sealant. How did you apply the sealant on the timing cases/covers, I mean the area where 2 cases/covers meet up-the upper one and the lower. There is a head gasket in between. Did you apply the sealant there, which means basically on the head gasket? Is it correct way. Perfect video.
@@SuperRon no problem, I’ve an r32 mk4 with 8k miles and is totally mint, I’m just detailing the underneath at the moment. The timing chains on these cars are a lot of work to replace as your video clearly shows 👍

Thanks for watching 😁 I think the genuine chains, tensioners and associated bits come in at about £1k, I spent around 15 hours on this so with the rest of the servicing parts that would probably be another grand, so you're about right with a full service. We fitted and new clutch and flywheel on this one too which was around £500ish I think.
We've never experienced a problem with the pulleys themselves so have never changed them, we've replaced solonoids before due to failure but they are able to be done in the car by taking the top cover off, with the gearbox still attached
