  • A playthrough of Nintendo's 1994 Super NES 3D arcade-style racer, Stunt Race FX.
This video was recorded with the SuperFX chip (that magical bit of silicon that allows an SNES game to render 3D graphics in real-time) overclocked 150% from its original stock speed of 10.7MHz to a somewhat more brisk 16MHz. If you would like to see the game as it originally played on the SNES, you can see my playthrough of it here: • Stunt Race FX (SNES) P...
The framerate sees a substantial boost from the increased clock speed, though it does also result in the game being sped up a bit as a side-effect. The framerate boost isn't directly proportional to the speed increase, though: if I were to slow the video down to match the original speed of the game, you would still see an improvement in the fluidity of the animation. Though the chip can be further overclocked, running it at any higher of a speed creates a fair number of graphics glitches and speeds the game up even further. 150% seemed to be the sweet spot. For anyone interested in trying this out on their own, the SNES9x Mercury core in Retroarch allows you to modify the emulated chip speed.
Another huge benefit to running the game at this higher clock speed is that the increased frame rate improves the overall responsiveness of the controls. Not that they were bad to begin with, but the overclock does make them feel snappier, and cornering with the faster vehicles (especially drifting through the corners with the 2WD and 4WD) is much easier like this.
I show all of the modes, vehicles, and tracks in this video. Here are the time codes so you can jump to the part you'd like to see:
    0:55 Speed Trax, Novice class
    11:11 Speed Trax, Expert class
    21:58 Speed Trax, Master class
36:37 Stunt Trax, all courses cleared
    43:11 Radio Control courses cleared
46:20 Battle Trax mode (shows the unlockable 2WD car)
I made this a while back, but it seemed only appropriate to upload this video now that the recent leak makes it seem like Stunt Race FX will soon be appearing on the Nintendo Switch.
    Hope you all enjoy it!
