- A playthrough of Nintendo's 1994 racing game for the Super Nintendo, Stunt Race FX.
Following up on their 1993 smash hit Star Fox ( • Star Fox (SNES) Playth... ), Nintendo once again partnered with Argonaut Software to create their second SuperFX-fueled 3D SNES game, Stunt Race FX, which released in the summer of 1994.
Here are the time stamps for everything shown in the video:
1:05 Test Run
The training course which becomes locked once you've finished a class in Speed Trax.
2:34 Speed Trax
The main mode featuring three classes, each made up of four unique tracks and a bonus round.
2:52 Novice class w/4WD
17:08 Expert class w/Coupe
32:08 Master class w/F-Type
53:10 Ending credits
55:40 Stunt Trax
A set of stunt-based tracks. If forty stars are collected on each of the main courses, a bonus RC-style set of battle games are unlocked.
56:04 Rock Field w/4WD
57:58 Up'N Down w/Coupe
1:00:24 Ice Dance w/Coupe
1:03:27 Blue Lake w/F-Type
1:05:52 Radio Control 1-4
1:12:25 Battle Trax
The 2P split-screen, head-to-head racing mode featuring four tracks based on the ones used in Speed Trax. All played as the 2WD which is unlocked after completing Speed Trax's Master class.
1:12:54 Cotton Farm
1:15:12 Toxic Desert
1:17:12 Marine Pipe
1:19:19 Port Arena
1:21:41 Free Trax
The time trial mode. Tracks are unlocked as they're completed in Speed Trax mode. I did a single run of the Sky Ramp track with the 2WD.
1994 was a banner year for video games, and every month brought with it a number of top-notch releases that would go on to be considered some of the best games of all time. The 16-bit generation was about to give way to the incoming 32-bit wave, but it wasn't going to go quietly.
Stunt Race FX was one of the many highlights that year. Its critical reception was nearly as warm as Star Fox's, and considering it ended up selling over a million copies, players clearly felt the same way.
The game was packed with content, the 3D graphics were as impressive as they were novel, the track and car designs were drenched in Nintendo's trademark charm, and most importantly, it was flat-out fun to play.
And how awesome were those Star Fox cameos, especially when you could crash your car straight into the side of a low-flying Arwing?
I loved it. My sister and I sank a ridiculous amount of time into it, and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
However much gamers nowadays criticize it for its speed and framerate, it was an impressive spectacle in 1994, and it was an exciting look forward at the sorts of experiences we could expect from the upcoming generation of console hardware.
If only Nintendo would revisit this idea! How about it guys? It's been nearly thirty years, and I could certainly go for another racer filled with googly-eyed cars.
If you'd like to see what the game looks like running on an overclocked SuperFX chip to improve the framerate, check this out: • Stunt Race FX (SNES w/...

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocom...) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
Stunt Race FX was such an impressive game when it came out, and it ended up becoming one of my favorite SNES racers. How could anyone not love these goofy googly-eyed cars?
goofy goober
It is not VR but is not bad.
The menu and level/racetrack music in this game is so whimsical and fun. It really gives a glimpse of the type of Nintendo music that was to come on the N64 with games like Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and other first party Nintendo games. 1994 was the best in so many realms of media (music, movies, games etc.). It was a standout year in my life and I’m sure many others feel the same way.
Sim kk
goofy aah cars
This video deserves to be at least 10x as long! This game is an absolute gem; thanks for giving it some love!
💀
Np! 😀 I've always been a huge fan of this one!
Too bad we cannot get a sequel or remake
@@patrikbengtsson3883 maybe someone can port it to N64 someway. Or at least use Mario kart mod to look like stuntrace fx. Imagine StuntFx 64
This game was on a demo SNES in walmart when I was a kid, I absolutely loved it. It eventually got for sale for something like 35 or 45$ and I bought it asap, it was ridiculous since most SNES games were almost 100$ in Canada. One of the best game for the console, the physics were awesome, it really felt like a 3d world, not a cookie cutter racer. Me and my friend would go to that multiplayer level with a half-pipe over water and would try to ram each other off or explode the car, it was so much fun lol
Man I remember how mind boggling amazing this game was. If spend days in a row with this game, alternating with my friends to best one another. Grand times.
I never noticed when I was a kid, but the wheels and the eyes are sprites while only the body of the car is polygonal. A memory saving technique to be sure but it gives the game characters their distinctive look, and it conveys to the player when they're steering or taking a curve the wrong way and so on. It says a lot about the ingenuity of these game designers how they incorporated an apparent limitation into the feel and personality of the game.
Love the game, I always press Select at the start to change the camera to a wider view, I use the Coupe, then when I finish the game the 2WD (motorbike), and do over the whole game
the SNES and its game library are probably the best all time of any console. too many legendary games to list. the snes graphics sounds and controls together is just perfect.
Everyone knows Star Fox, but not this one. Underrated game.
I'm in my 30s and grew up playing super Nintendo, I've played a ton of games for it and still do to this day. It's probably my favorite system of all time. Somehow, I have never seen or heard of this game. It looks like a ton of fun. I've got to play it!
If you have kids growing up now and you want to explain the joy and feeling of growing up in the 90’s, just show them this game. It’ll be a good start.
I remember getting this game for Christmas of 1994, after renting it MANY times during the summer. It had just came out, that past May, and I was in love with it. Its still one of my favorite SNES titles to date, and I could play it over and over again. The music, visuals, and gameplay were so awesome in its time. It has a special place with me. At 5 dollars each rental, Im sure that summer 50 dollars was spent on that game already.
One of those games I could easily go back to anytime despite it running at an "unplayable" framerate. Lots of fun.
@channelofstuff yes. Just saying even in a modern context this is still fun even without enhancement patches.
@channelofstuff6662most 2D games ran at 60FPS
Still have this game for my SNES: read in a magazine that 100% the game would give you a three-wheeled vehicle..... so many hours....
2wd was actually a 3 wheeled car during development, u can play with it by using a game genie code but it is a little too bouncy and super fast acceleration, also very slow on turns
Aqua Tunnel was one of my favorite tracks
My favorite was the motorcycle, but all these *vehicles were so CUTE. 😅🥰
this game always hit me more than similar 3D racers like F-Zero and the likes. The tracks designs were phenomenal, many arcade racers bit from this game. The weather effects, multi-terrain layouts, debris, and off track interactions were something so creative at the time. I just felt it when driving through fog, or industrial smog, underwater tunnels, stormy mountains, or under a clean night sky while planes flew by.
No doubt games like Cruisin USA, Need for Speed, Road Rash, Top Gear, Test Drive, Motor Toon Grand Prix siphoned styles from this game in the following years. The only thing I didnt like was how shaky the car handling was, any bridge over water was like an instant wipeeout for me.
I got to play Star Fox as a 90's kid. But I missed out on this one..
Can tell I would've loved it. Currently enjoy sim racing in VR as a hobby.
You are an absolute treasure, NintendoComplete! Such an awesome resource to be able to see these games in action for historical reference, nostalgia, etc.
And in some cases, I have watched your playthroughs just to figure out "what am I supposed to do??"
Thank you very much! 😀
One of the many games I didn't know existed until it released on NSO's SNES lineup. Pretty fun overall
Haven't touched this game in over 2 decades. Still to this day that Night Owl tune is still present in my own head.
Yeah, all the music was fantastic.
A technical ruddy marvel, love those sound effects and the music is superb.
Somehow they made a low-framerate racing game fun? Good ol Argonaut.
Wow this looks way better than i remember from back then. I think I just saw pictures and thought it looked like it was for little kids and wrote it off. Thanks for another great video!!
Man I remember this game. This game is so underrated and really fun. But, this game is somewhat brutal later on, I also wish there were more vehicles in this game. Stunt race FX needs a remake. Also the soundtrack kicks ass till this day.
strangely I've noticed quite a bit of shitting on this game but it's absolutely fantastic and with a weighty interesting control model. One of my fave racers
I used to watch my brother play this all the time. I think I got to play a little too but I don't remember fully. Such a great game
Can't believe we had a way more powerful Jaguar at home when this came out. But Stun Race FX shows how smart game design overcomes technical limitations! We really loved it.
Haha ikr? There's no contest between this and Club Drive.
Club drive was an absolute mess
Had this game as a kid. And at that time i wondered how the SNES showed 3D games? Way before the play station and saturn.... fun times
I knew that Argonaut was responsible for Croc and Star Fox, but I have never heard of this game before. Honestly, it looks pretty good. It could definitely use a remake or remaster of some kind. And the music isn't too bad, either.
Had amazing gameplay too
I had this game when I was like 8 years old. I'm 32 now and just randomly remembered and looked for it.
The soundtrack was amazing too
I loved this game. No idea why wii systems or higher didn't make this for those systems
I loved this game I was so hyped when I rented it for the first time
There's a mod that ups the framerate and makes things run smoothly. I suggest that because while this was pretty cool when it came out its SO choppy to play in this original state
My childhood what I played this game of my life.
I played this game for a full 2 years. I spent most of my time hot lapping. It was a time when you bought a game and played it to death. Not like nowadays.
LolI still go by that mentality despite my age not worth taking things for granted
I didn't own this one as a kid but rented it frequently. Lots of fun just really rough framerate and draw distance.
back then i didn't even attempted to play the 3rd cup. The frame rate becomes so low it wasn't fun nor worth to play it.
48:02 Yeah, y’all didn’t see that
Haha yeah oops. Sometimes you just can't avoid dropping a deuce. I couldn't duckwalk my way out of that one.
how do you unlock the cyber truck?
Anyone remember these cars appearing in Smash Bros Brawl as those Stickers? I always wondered where these googly eyed cars came from...
No os dejéis engañar por las apariencias... ¡Stunt Race FX es un juego desafiante y adictivo como pocos! Un gran juego que, recuerdo, me llegó a impresionar en su momento de salida.
*amazing and fun driving game!* ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
pretty much everyone's first 3D game
The title screen music theme will be burned in my memory until the day I die... And I didn’t even had the game as a child.
Quirky, primitive and choppy, but boy this game sure was fun!
So underrated... loved thosbgame
Fantastic 3D.
I reallly liked playing this game when it came out why didn’t it get a sequal. Also we should have gotten more unlockable cars to play with besides the bike.
I remember my mom taking me to blockbuster when I was 5 or 6 and I rented this game
I used to love this game!
One of the best games i ever played…
Man this brings me back 😂
Always loved the bike
Hey NC,
I have another game request if you like to partake on bro. The game is called, "The Adventures of Hyperman" This title was offered to the public to play in 1995 for the PC and it's nothing but a barrel of laughs. Was a fantastic gem that I played on my IBM Aptiva growing up and I think it would make a fine edition to add to the channel bro. 8^)
Anthony..
who else saw the Stunt Race FX reference in the Super Mario RPG remake. and ik it was in the original game too
This game shows that Nintendoes what Sega’nt! (Apologies for the crappy pun, this game is great!)
Dang. This is very Good for a SNES. I wonder how good it will look on a GBA?
Loved this title
OMG OMG i played this game sooooooo much !
Is there a way to use emulation (or roms hacks) to get the SNES 3D to render at a higher resolution? Sorta like how they do it with PSX and PS2 emulation? It'd be interesting to see this running at a smoother framerate, higher resolution, with further draw distance.
I’m sure you can but it’s a 90s game it’s not gonna make a difference unless it’s fully 3D if anything it’ll look worse
Use Snes9x Emu It Has The Settings
Argonaut Software’s been revived recently, why not partner with Nintendo and make either a StarFox 99 or Stunt Race FX 99?
i always got this confused w/ the uniracers one
Are most Super FX games actually technical demos?
*_HONK_*
Adrienne VS Uncle James
I have this cartridge. Would like to sell for anyone out there who likes this game lol
Juegazo
Yeaah sneees
This game looks like it should be ported or remade, but then it would lose the low polygon charm. Such a dilemma!
I'd love it if they redid it just with a higher resolution and framerate, like Switch update of Virtua Racing.
Star fox🎉
Piece out
Não conhecia esse jogo
nice Nintendo
Mommy VS Uncle James
i wonder if someone has already made a hack for this game where you can play it with a better framerate
where can i download and play this marvel of a game on pc
0:00😂
Stunt race FX is Better than Blaze and the monster machine nintendo switch game
