- I'll be uploading a fifty-minute project of Dylan material this Saturday, so stay tuned! Here's an excerpt that I thought should be released on its own. I overdubbed the original audio from this footage with superior-quality soundboard recordings from "The 1966 Live Recordings." Also, this footage is from two concerts, and though I took much care to edit the tracks together precisely, you might hear a little inconsistency. Nonetheless, it's a haunting performance by Dylan. Enjoy this gem while you can!

That’s one of the mysteries of bobs poetry, it’s different for each listener imo. This is one of my favourite songs of all time. I love the other live version even better than the original
Same! Good music is good music regardless
I think I started listening to Dylan in 7th grade. Every time I hear him, my mind starts running over his lyrics and weird delivery, with all the joy of that pudgy little 7th grader. Bob just takes your mind on some wild ass adventure every time I hear him!

"Dude," I was referring to his whole set, not just this one particular song in his amazing transformation as a wordsmith and songwriter. If you don't consider "Visions of Johann" as genius, I doubt, on the other hand, that you'll argue with the finale to this set, "Like A Rolling Stone" as being the real deal.

Despite his longevity and acclaim, I still feel his talent is underestimated. I don’t think the world will ever fully know the depth of Bob's consciousness.
Nope, the world won't know it - but a few will. And they'll also wonder how the hell he hit that depth so young.

And years later, no matter what anyone anywhere says, he never came close to this again. Genius. Supernova.
Agreed. At his zenith. Incandescent.
Lyrics aside, his intonation and the way he pronounces each word are mesmerizing.
But maybe it's just because I'm not an english native speaker (I'm french, it's not my fault !) Do english native speakers experience the same feeling ?
Beautifully put and I can relate. I am native spanish speaker and I feel this enhances Bob’s, as you said, pronunciation, intonation and lyrics. He is a never-ending treasure trove.✌🏽❤️
I do.
He uses this persona sometimes where he is mocking. He exagerates his lip movements, and tilts his head in an odd way. He is making fun of delusion, perhaps. Or maybe he is just lamenting the loss of Johanna to the madness. It is such a wonderful work of art, that is for certain. I also have visions of Johanna, but I am too old, so this must be the beginning, it can't be the end.
BTW, my favorite uncle was a Frenchman. He was a wonderful man.
Dylan songs cover me with goosebumps and make me cry, and give me great joy and hope.
@@kenbellchambers4577 that is really interesting, I never thought of it as that deep of an artist choice. Kinda just thought of it as a combination of just doing something interesting/whatever the hell he wanted to do along with being under the influence of many drugs. I never thought of it as a character that reflects the song. He did this when performing Just Like a Woman but I suppose those exaggerations and characteristics of slowly slipping away could work there too (as with the majority of Blonde on Blonde now that I think about it). Wicked cool, thanks for that thought and sorry for the novel.
In a sense. it has very little to do with his nationality. He does have the "advantage" of being an American, growing up speaking American English. It is the cadence of the music, it's American music. Brits can do it, but it's easier if you are like Bob, and especially if you are Bob, from Minnesota.
I am always amazed at how quiet the crowd is at these old concerts. In between songs you can hear a pin drop
Normal for England at that time.
Probably spellbound
This is what respect meant.
Yes - especially in contrast with the Beatles during this same time - they've stated that at times they literally couldn't even hear themselves sing over the din of screaming fans...he was and is very special.
Meh. He just commanded it. He was that important. People have always been the same and always will be .
Your channel is ridiculous for the incredible things you share that still seem like they shouldn't exist. You are a true miracle worker and I hope you keep up the good work.
Nobody can sing quite like Dylan. He’s one of a kind. His voice is rough, nasally, boyish, mature and beautiful at the same time. He doesn’t get enough praise for his phrasing, pronunciations, pauzes. The mood he sets in his songs is just incredible.
How can I explain? It's soOOooO hard to get on
He's super sassy I reckon at times haha such a performer, alongside his poetic genius

I'm 15 years older than you, & still discovering ,bought my first album in '63.
Some of the most beautiful lyrics he ever wrote. Seeing him sing this live is wonderful.
I don't believe that anyone can actually come up with poetry like this. It's just beyond a mortal stream of consciousness. Explain me this, how can anybody write, " In the museum, infinity goes up on trial/and voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while/ and Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues you could tell from the way she smiles"
This song changed the way I hear and feel music. The mood Dylan creates puts you outside of your mind and body. Bob’s genius forces you to pause and observe, while being drenched by the sincerity in his music. A unique talent.
One of Dylan's absolute classics, definitely in an all time top 10 of Dylan tracks, maybe top 5, which is some honour, considering the amount of classics he's written in a huge body of work. I love the '66 acoustic live version's.
Top 5
Entirely in his own universe here. A lot of people can play and sing and write songs but very, very few get up in the ether like this. We're all lucky to have lived in Bob's time.

Hey...
Which 66 version is it where he goes on a long slurred discourse while having trouble tuning up...
And says,
"Its not a drug song...
It's just vulgar to think so"
Is it in Paris that happened?
A stoned classic....and here we are in 2022 still in awe of this man`s pure genius......
Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it
And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind
In the empty lot where the ladies play blindman's bluff with the key chain
And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the "D" train
We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight
Ask himself if it's him or them that's insane
Louise, she's all right, she's just near
She's delicate and seems like the mirror
But she just makes it all too concise and too clear
That Johanna's not here
The ghost of 'lectricity howls in the bones of her face
Where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place
Now, little boy lost, he takes himself so seriously
He brags of his misery, he likes to live dangerously
And when bringing her name up
He speaks of a farewell kiss to me
He's sure got a lotta gall to be so useless and all
Muttering small talk at the wall while I'm in the hall
How can I explain?
It's so hard to get on
And these visions of Johanna, they kept me up past the dawn
Inside the museums, infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo this is what salvation must be like after a while
But Mona Lisa musta had the highway blues
You can tell by the way she smiles
See the primitive wallflower freeze
When the jelly-faced women all sneeze
Hear the one with the mustache say, "Jeez, I can't find my knees"
Oh, jewels and binoculars hang from the head of the mule
But these visions of Johanna, they make it all seem so cruel
The peddler now speaks to the countess who's pretending to care for him
Sayin', "Name me someone that's not a parasite and I'll go out and say a prayer for him"
But like Louise always says
"Ya can't look at much, can ya man?"
As she, herself, prepares for him
And Madonna, she still has not showed
We see this empty cage now corrode
Where her cape of the stage once had flowed
The fiddler, he now steps to the road
He writes ev'rything's been returned which was owed
On the back of the fish truck that loads
While my conscience explodes
The harmonicas play the skeleton keys and the rain
And these visions of Johanna are now all that remain
Thanks for the lyrics. Deserving of more praise.🇦🇺👍
I was two years old when Blonde on Blonde came out. years later I lived in a loft that looked down on the block that the cover (of Blonde on Blonde) depicts... and, I gotta say, what with our heat pipes coughing and also the girls on the D train and all of those jewels and binoculars... and... I cannot count how many times I went charging down East Broadway with the notes of this entire album (CD) blowing through my head as I raced to reached me dealer... and so, each time I listen to this and now especially watch this... I am thrown back into a world that only exists in my throwback times. I hope I am not the only one who experiences this.

this gives me chills, truly and utterly haunting performance
This song, as released on the "Blonde on Blonde" double album, is just as beautiful but far more haunting with the addition of electric organ and electric guitar, reaching a crescendo at the end in which all else disappears, and he is left with only the visions of Johanna which have totally consumed him by song's end. Put on headphones and listen, in the dark, to the album version of this song, The way he is consumed by the visions reminds me of the building crescendo in The Doors' recording of "The End". I first heard Visions of Johanna when the album was released in 1966. The song's impact has not diminished over the years.
decades past I was hitching across the country like so many during that period, long story short I got a ride off a very bad exit ( it was bad cuz few used it) being a long time fan of his I immediately recognize Bob behind those shades and that voice that said you wanna ride? it was a old station wagon with some camping gear no visible sign of a guitar in sight and a large dog he called "Elvis" He was still smoking cigarettes then, thank God cuz I was a heavy smoker myself and he had a carton of camels and right away gave me two packs which I thought was very cool not too long after picking me up we stop @ dinner along side the road got to talking about my direction I was heading to his surprise I said I was drifting around he then offer me a ride along east for a couple days all expenses free/ the first nite he got a couple of rooms, I'm guessing so I would shower the next nite was beneath some stars in the parking lot of a dive bar/tavern/ when he let me out on a freeway exit he gave a harmonica in the key of c, a pack of camels, he drove off/stop/ backed up / got out of his car walked up to me and said, "Elvis said to give you a couple dollars"which turn out to be more than a hundred, I waved good bye to Elvis and Bob...this seems much too unreal now as I get older which baffles me, but it did happen and I think I got the jest of it right...tanks for sharing
What do you guys think this song is about?
I've looked a little bit into it and think the following.
There are three characters in this song: Bob, Johanna, and Louise. Bob had a long time girlfriend and fellow musician named Joan Baez which I think is Johanna in this story. At the time he is writing this he was dating or married (not sure) his first wife Sara, which I think in this story is Louise. Now read these lyrics:
"in't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it"
Dylan is trying to go through the night but his thoughts are overcoming him and being loud and he's trying to deny them.
"Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind"
Its him and Sarah and they are together (entwined) yet thoughts of Joan Baez still enter his mind while he's with Sarah.
The rest of the song is very poetic and beautiful but up for interoperation. But I think him trying to overcome the thoughts of what he had Joan Baez while still being with Sarah are a prominent theme in this song
"as she herself prepares for him"
this happened. hard to believe, but it did. technically incredible. he wrote it; he sang it. it happened. this video is proof it happened. incredible, but true.
I grew up with Bob Dylan's music, know most of his songs by heart... GREAT variation in tunes, in lyrics, simply genius.
Me too. Can't imagine not having his music in my youth. It shaped who I am.
The recording of this performance remains my single favorite Dylan moment. He was never better than this. What an absolute privilege to have been in the audience on that day in 1966.
I envy you and everyone else who witnessed Bob in the UK in 1966.
1966 dylan was so unreal. Nothing even close before and after, not even his own self. It's like he was an entirely different person that year

Takes me back to 1967, early evening & I was just feeling the gentle hellos of my trip coming on, sitting under the huge old avo trees in the backyard, with this masterpiece trying to hold conversation with me. The most important person in all of Rock
I’m asking around all over the internet for some kind of help. I swear to God I’m not lying. It’s been happening to me since the past year. Some of the fictional things in religion are actually true. Cruel things have been happening to me and these characters are using telepathy to torment me. They have a lot of supernatural abilities such as seeing the daydreams I draw in my head. They can see all of my memories, all I need to do is just think of it and just like that they let know that it has been seen in a split second. They can make this tick like noise in my head constantly, and say cruel things like “an insect is eating your brain”…all I need to do is remember about the ticking and they for humor do it to me again. They can hear the music I play/make up in my head and try to order me around saying “I don’t like that song change it” and threaten when I don’t listen saying terrible things like “I’m going to kill you or your family member”. They can also predict future please help.
Thank you for all of the good work involved in bringing us this unique Dylan stuff. It really does matter. Deeply appreciated by many (-:
It does to me!
Feel sorry for the guys expecting protest songs in one way. We can easily forget how slowly news travelled in those days. The protest songs were fantastic and laudable in their own right, but Dylan had already gone beyond that acoustically (Tambourine Man, Gates Of Eden, It's Alright Ma) and electrically (Subterranean, Rolling Stone) etc. well before this tour, never mind the Blonde On Blonde stuff showcased here. What an experimentalist. Constantly following his own path to this day.
Awesome, poetic & artistically unbelievably..... greatly transcendent...
It's so odd to think that there are these three Dylan albums that are considered epic masterpieces, and while they sold very well when they first came out, so much controversy and division of opinion surrounded them. When did that ever happen again? Lots of albums get revisited and reassessed, but when was the last time a popular singer's own fans stired up a hornet's nest while the artist was clearly putting out great material?
My God. After all these years it is so strong!
I wish so badly that the entirety of this song had a video
I may be in the minority here, but I think this song works better on solo acoustic than the electric studio version. This just captures the mood Dylan wants to evoke better in my opinion.
One of my very favourite Dylan songs from that era. Here he’s putting every part of his mind and soul and body into these words and making this music. It’s divine. He looks like a sweet angel boy. The street scenes are interesting to me. I like the old footage and seeing what the women wore. I think I was with the Midland Bank a long time ago but think it’s now gone. Not sure. The final shot looks like cars driving the road to Calvary. All those telegraph poles like crosses in the snow. Not sure if it ever snows in Calvary. Thx SP, this is so lovely to see and hear, especially cos I can’t sleep right now and I wish I could. These Visions of Johanna…….x
Dylan is on another planet to the rest of the world at this point (and probably still is)
Can you imagine to be in the audience during this song? OMG! So great! A true epic and legendary moment in Folk history!
"The ghosts of electricity, that howl in the bones of her face!" Epic line!!!! Didn't hear it! Too bad! Awesome footage, though!!!!
Just one out of at least hundreds of reasons why Mr Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize.Love ya Bob.
Here's some postmodernism for you: I used to listen to this on CD while chatting with my friends I met on AIM chatrooms as a kid late at night (when us poors could use the internet cause there was less people slowing it down). It reminded me of our conversations and hanging out virtually. I miss those days before it was so media-saturated and fractured and all your friends and family from real life were online, and you could just meet talk to people from different background honestly.
Million years ahead of anyone else.
Must be amazing to understand what he sings as a native English speaker. You guys are lucky.
My favorite dylan era is around 2000 when he did things have changed, it's not dark yet. His voice and aproach to songs was at its greatest. The things have changed via satellite performance is one of the best.
I've heard watching dylan on stage is like watching and hearing a wisp of smoke. Perfect.
I heard him in Long Island in Feb, 1966. Half acoustic, half electric. He soon went to Europe and got booed and cheered. But that night I heard no boos.

Brian Jones was beaten up by Ian Stewart same day, for not going into segregated restaurant but then changing his mind delaying then a half hour. He was a ceaseless supporter of human rights, and unparrelled supporter of black musicians but he also was probably distressed by news. Bob Dylan told him for God's sake.
So poor baby Brian Jones, beaten and in the fucking confederacy and losing an intimate friend. Or whatever
But, this Visions of Bob have conquered my Mind/ the Ghost of electricity howls in the face of the fuckin stupid audience/ inside the Concerts Halls humanity goes up on trial/ & this footage of Bob as a New Born Rimbaud are all that remain!
Good New Morning to all the Bob listeners!.🤗🤗🤗
He's given the worlds so many acoustic treasures.
1965 to 66 showed a supreme talent get caught up in drugs, but still supreme.
So great. Thanks for the peek Swingin.
And I know you're busy with the project BUT... maybe when you're all done. Hearing "Johanna" reminded me again. There's a real rocking version of it I believe in the full Bootleg collection. It's the fast version with all the verses. Maybe 5 minutes? Not the short one they used for the official Dylan video on RUclips, but it's the same tempo. I'd adore it if you could upload it. 😎
I’ll see what I can do! Might not be able to due to copyright, but I’ll try! Cheers :)
Such a great singer. I love that voice so much!
