Got lucky on that one in that it did it in the shop rather than risking a bent rod or other damage trying to start it elsewhere. Had that happen on my car with a direct injected gas engine that had a stuck injector. The pressure in the gas tank while it sat literally pushed all of the fuel into the motor, and all the oil in the crankcase went into the exhaust, and needless to say, it wasn't keen on turning over when I wanted to pull it into the garage to fix it. Hey Josh, I’m pretty good at troubleshooting those def problems. I’m at a cat dealer here in American Samoa. I think there is an updated version of the def pump now. The pump can also fail and push def in the harness all the way to the ecm. I love you videos!
@@nspro931our headquarters are in California, need I say more lol. Yeah most people do def/dpf deletes here, max speed is only 25mph so not really in danger of getting smoked with a tune. For me, def makes me a ton of money. Primarily because no one is good at diagnosing it and every day the machine is down is about a 1k loss for the company. I had an interesting one last month. No crank, no start, no comm. ended up being the def pump. I stumbled on the answer just from feeling all the relays. The def pump was hot. Swap the relay, same thing. Got it with the rebuild already done, still can’t complain I only paid 10k for the truck and it had 440k original miles on it and it was kept in a shed used only for harvest season.
Love the mustache roll😂, and always love the information. Thank you for always going beyond what is just on the surface and showing details. Learned a lot from your videos
I haven't seen any guesses on the problem. I have zero experience with heavy duty engines but my brain immediately went to a warped head followed by improper torquing of the head bolts.
On engines with cylinder liners like this one it’s critical they’re the right height after install. The liner actually sticks up a little and that’s what helps it seal. Even if the head bolts are torqued perfectly it won’t clamp the gasket like it should if they liners aren’t high enough.
Once I figure out the cylinder, I mark and check head bolt torque. This could be a warranty situation. That is why I like a reman long block, as if a head gasket joint failure occurs. It pushes a lot of blame on Cat as they installed the head. Of course it has to be a legal engine. Per Cat guide lines, all liners come out. All head bolts and spacer plate replaced. Flycut cracks I hate. PSI test the head and it is good, warranty won't pay unless it has failed into the coolant passage. What is your back log on cylinder heads? Longest one in our store, was ordered in August of last year. Waiting on one I ordered, (Dec of 2022) EST is March 13.
We've had two 6NZ rebuilds lose a head gasket....the spacer between the head and block had water jacket holes not lining up ... js. We do in-house engine work so it's not the mechanics fault. Knowledge is power

Easy! Dropped liner! We see it all the time here in New Zealand! Trucks here are loaded to 132,000lb as standard so we are twisting blocks all the time
Those C15 6NZ engines are the best ever built. A buddy of mine had one, set at 425hp It would pull a house down, even set at 425hp Ran 2 million miles without ever having the head removed
How is Carter? I've never used them for service. I used to live in Roanoke and the only time I needed service for my truck in that area, I ended up at Truck Enterprises.
Back in the seventies I worked on a 1950 Chevy pickup that had been overheated and cracked the head. It got hydro lock when we tried starting after it cooled down. I pulled the head and replaced it but noticed the piston that hydro locked didn't go all the way to the top of the cylinder. Well it turned out the rod got bent when the piston got hydro locked.
Have you ever thought of a way to optimize the storage or organization of engine parts as the engine is disassembled? I end up with little boxes and tubs and stuff everywhere and the work bench area is covered with harnesses, tubes and all sorts of stuff. I have obtained a grocery store stock cart for free that I intend to cut and modify into a 24 inch wide x 36 inch long by 60 inch tall multi shelf roll around. Heavy stuff like manifolds, turbos, heads would be on the lower shelf and lighter stuff like boxes of bolts at the top. Hope to keep things more organized.
Hopefully cat has better luck with their remans than other brands. Many of the other brands seem luck to make it out the door before problems start. Gotta wonder if the other shop cut corners on the head.
Love your content brodie; trucker, been running Cats and Series 60s forever. While your info is Cat spec, its generally educational to any diesel-man. Thanks so much. Editing and voiceover is excellent BTW.
3406b I had head gasket issues with it. The protrusion measured ok however the deck was eroded under the liners. #2 took a .063 shim to bring it back it was the worst one
I actually had two engines so bad that way we had to cut the counter bores deeper rhan spec and double shim the counter bores to get to good metal. It sound sketchy but it worked as a last resort.
I'll take a wild guess on that Cummins destruction and say it was from a dowel pin that shook itself loose from the cover. Known problem since around 1989-2002 (I believe 2002 was the last year of that problem).
The vp44's I've had apart have a smaller diameter on the gear side so the dowel pin doesn't fall out...and I believe generally the 7100 engine's have the issue because of the harmonics of the pump...but I'm sure someone out there knows more....but anyway 👍👊
I remember after the rebuild on my former DDEC-4, lot's of blow-by, white smoke, and the failed bottle test, it was because the tech who reassembled the engine (not the same one who took it apart) was a low-hour fresh out of school with no supervision had installed the head gasket upside down which you can do on that engine. It was the original tech who tore it down the second time and it was he who made the discovery and the reason it became a warranty job which the shop paid 100%. On the engine you are now working on, I suspect an issue with liner protrusion or worse, a warped head since it was a short-block swap. Chances are they did not check the head for straightness before placing it on this engine. Only two things I can think of that can warp a head is overheating, or improper torquing of head bolts or torquing out of sequence. That's my two cents and I swear by it.
Had a deleted ISX crack a head and was pushing and eating coolant. Was told to drive it back 2000K miles. Not knowing at first, I shut it down. Didn’t want to start the first time and locked up the second time a couple hours later. So I rotated the engine over by hand to squeeze the coolant out of the cylinders. Several rotations. Worked to get it started. It ran the next 2 days and 2K miles. It shut down while I was in the shower 30 mins from delivery and wouldn’t restart. Towed it and pulled the head to find a very similar crack. I’ve heard that truck has cracked that head 3 more times since then, 100K miles each time. Don’t delete your EGR! Anyway, just a tip if you find yourself in this predicament on the road.
One would think liner height should be good since it’s a reman block, but every other reman part is questionable these days. When I ran to Alaska there was a purple W900 up there and it was known as “The purple people eater”. 🤷♂️

we bought a cat tractor with a a3a c15 engine. We looked at it at the farmer yard and their tractor guy was there. It had coolant running down the side of the block and he said it was the water pump and they would fix. Turned out to be the head gasket but it was an external leak. They ate it and it has been good so far we have put about 400 hours on it. What would have caused? Would it have been liners? The tractor was worked hard for the first 10,000 hours. They had it chipped but we are not working it hard now. That engine is set at 450hp but we only need about 350 hp for our work. It was priced right and just had the transmission rebuilt.
Good afternoon, I have a question about the head, story is I had a bunch of work done on my 07 Pete C15 accert anyway all the prior work didn’t fix the issue another shop found a bad head gasket between 4-5, liner protrusion checked out good but then noticed on the head in 3 cylinders it had those hair line crack in it, question being would you replace the head for that?
@@AdeptApeLol. I will be waiting. My son applied for the Think Big program through our local dealer and he watches your channel religiously so keep up the good work Brother.
Two places I use silicone one is on a Cummins engine front peanut covered to the block just in the bottom two corners because the gasket loses the Rubber seal on the piece of metal down there so I put black rtv about 3in up on each side so when the gasket loses its rubber piece off the steel there's still sealant which acts as a rubber 3in on the bottom where they all leak oil so it solves that problem forever doesn't come back in the second place is I believe it's the Volvo intake gasket I put it in four spots because the O-ring seal does not stay on the intake unless you try to glue it or something so I found that in four spots if you put our TV and you let it dry it holds in place so you can actually Mount the intake to the Head other than that do not use RTV on Rubber seal it doesn't do anything although I did use a thin layer on a C15 between the front seal in the peanut cover cuz the peanut cover with slightly out of round and that fix the oil leak after three seals in it found out it wasn't the seal that was leaking it was from the seal to the peanut cover and since the engine already has a million miles on it we decided we would try to put a little caulk on the outside of the seal to seal it to the peanut cover and hope that fixes it until we do a full rebuild on it's been nine months has a week to drop a oil
A friend of mine had a driver that killed two isx and in the second one he managed to spin every main bearing in it ...and now he has moved on to driving for someone else this one sounds like it hydrolocked
My guess is either the block or head wasn’t machined or maybe they got a head from another unit and installed it without machining it or possibly improper torque. Maybe something I would ask the customer was why was it rebuilt in the first place
Def injector went out on the 2019 Pete I drive, then two weeks later the clutch went out on the 18 speed auto trans. Company started buying automatics because so many new drivers can’t operate a manual and they claim the trans is smarter than the driver. Second clutch at 380k, which is smarter?
I have friends telling me the same thing." The automated transmissions will shift better than you do. Get rid of your old truck and get with the times. " I did the opposite and just invested in some upgrades for the old girl. A 379 with a CAT C15 and a 13 speed is a great combo. Eventually I may upgrade her to an 18 speed when transmission rebuild time comes around again.

Why do you have dot air line from your gun to the air hose??
I have a 3406e. Can i add jakes to the engine if so do you know what all is involved? Thanks for the help
That APU destruction was crazy. Maybe you can shout out for musically inclined folk to donate a music Licensed tune for you
Good afternoon, I have a question about the head, story is I had a bunch of work done on my 07 Pete C15 accert anyway all the prior work didn’t fix the issue another shop found a bad head gasket between 4-5, liner protrusion checked out good but then noticed on the head in 3 cylinders it had those hair line crack in it, question being would you replace the head for that?
What model is your lord impact wrench used to take off the head bolts?
Dang it. A cliffhanger!! That aint right!
You guys know as much about it as I do. Going to have to update to episode 2 of this one for sure.
Got a question
What's the ideal boost pressure for a single turbo c15 cat thanks
I'm guessing that will likely depend on what HP the ECM is flashed at.
@@xxch4osxx it's at 475 hp
@@BrayanPerez-bw8fq The single turbos should be 17-18 HP per pound of boost. 475 should be 27-28 PSI based on that.
A friend of mine had a driver that killed two isx and in the second one he managed to spin every main bearing in it ...and now he has moved on to driving for someone else this one sounds like it hydrolocked
Would love to know who built that engine
Why would you run green coolant just so used to read in purple that you don't normally see green anymore
I was thinking maybe the spacer plate was installed without double checking liner protrusion. 🤔
What impact is that after you pulled the jakes and spacer plate off? It looks like a Milwaukee m12.
Would something like that be covered by warranty if he has one?
My guess is either the block or head wasn’t machined or maybe they got a head from another unit and installed it without machining it or possibly improper torque. Maybe something I would ask the customer was why was it rebuilt in the first place
Could it be that green monster that did it?
Well at least it is better than the 'Destruction of the Week'. 😱 it drove then I parked it ... FOREVER !
Holy cow
This reminds me of OP From snowrunner game mod 🥰
