- In this video we are working on a Grey Old Freightliner with a Cat C-12 in it. Engine definitely has a miss, but is it a major problem or a little one? @AdeptApe on Venmo or AdeptApe@yahoo.com on PayPal for donations, thank you so much for supporting the channel!

Hope you guys enjoyed watching the video. If you wanted to pick up the same torque wrench as the video here it is. Amazon Affiliate Link to the Fat Wrench Torque Wrench like in the video: amzn.to/3LSiwYR
I got you the 9/32 driver you require. I’ll leave it at the front desk tomorrow after work. Thanks for the great caterpillar videos
I got them, a man of your word and thank you.
@@AdeptApe I’m not even back to work yet! And you’re welcome!!
I could understand if you are not able to say the exact amount, but for this job, what did it set back the customer?
For the torque driver, get a 1/4 hex to 1/4 square drive adapter then just use your 9/32 socket.
Was about to suggest this.
Wera makes a good one. If you get their “tool check” it has that bit and a ton of other good ones as well.
Simple fixes like that are always the best! God bless people that actually keep their equipment clean and maintained, it makes a world of difference to the people that have to fix them when they’re not a greasy oily mess or so rusted up that you have to heat every nut and bolt to take anything apart. Great vid bud 👍
A pleasant surprise to see the odd episode where the dollar-signs aren`t stacking up higher and higher as the technician investigates the problem. And by that, I mean the technician isn`t finding more and more and more damage that requires parts be replaced. Sure, it`s nice to see damaged machines get fixed and live on, but it`s refreshing to see an easy fix once in a while 😎
When you lifted the wire terminal off the injector and I saw the dirty underside of it, I knew it wasn't making contact. Nice to have a simple fix every now and then.
The leaves are changing colors, I tell you what. My favorite part of the video
This guy is brilliant. I love how nonchalant he is about being the smartest kid in the class.
Congratulations on your 3yrs 🎉 love your videos 💪🇺🇸
Josh I love seeing how you verify things. There was a miss, there was a fault for cyl 6 misfire, and yet you still make sure the miss is on cyl 6. Verification like that saves so much time and money on misdiagnosis'. So great to see, very good for the customer.
Holy smokes that service truck in the yard had a bad day!
It's nice to get an "easy one" every now and then...
Happy work anniversary!
Thanks sir 🙏
When you drove to the front of your shop and you talked about the trees and scenery. What a beautiful area!
Congrats on your third year...
Thanks for sharing
Love you work Ape, excellent video.
What happened to that service truck
I love it when things go this way.
Love these videos, keep them coming you do a great job!
I’ve seen those nuts come loose and cause a miss twice, it’s always nice win to tell the customer it was a quick and cheap fix especially when they used to deal with a different shop in the area
Dang, I bet that was 1 happy customer. 😊
Great video. That was a easy fix. Keep up the good job.
Congratulations on the 3 years!
Great video thank you for sharing
happy aniversary josh and for a change you also got a very pleasant walk in the park with this one! 🎉
Gotta love the easy ones
Good videos as always Josh keep it up!
Destruction of the week should have been that service truck that was in a accident, hopefully the tech is ok!
Nice job you’re so smart..I’d put a plastic bag over filter dump just sayin
I'm usually thinking in the back of my head wonder if I'm actually going to be that lucky that it was something so simple when I work on something and find a simple fix like that ! Glad for tge customer that that was all that was wrong ! Great troubleshooting there ! 👍👍
Do like I do use a small bag on the dust cap
Good information
That was easy! Now, take the rest of the day off, with pay!! Lol
Curious about the destruction of the service truck in the yard?
That service truck took a good shot or rolled over it looks
😂 I was thinking same thing but maybe someone was hurt or killed in it so he wouldn't say anything
@AdeptApe I have seen that cracked injector body on a C9 injector! It was the rear engine in a 627G. Tons of smoke, same deal, no clue of the cause.
0:10 , wow, a freightliner dash that’s not in pieces.
I am jealous. My truck is completely falling apart.
I used to be a diesel mechanic in the field, I wish I took more pictures before finding your channel the shit I’ve seen would have filled up your destruction of the week moments for weeks
Ah, 5:45 can we get an explanation for that F'd up service truck?
Good video
That’s really nice on that injector….. I seen that on an E-Tech Mack before but they’re just pencil injectors…. Throwing flames and all out the stack… I can’t say I’ve ever seen that on any C-7 before… appreciate the videos
I have a couple of those 9/32 nut sets laying around in various boxes.
I never had any luck doing a one cylinder click test. Always clicks one time and stops. So if I need to test one that is intermittent, I do a two cylinder. Naturally the two that share the common. You must have felt the problem was under the valve cover. As I like to pull the base connector first and since it was a open, I jump the circuit and make it a short. Then plug it back up and see if fault returns. I like to replace the nut connector as it was arcing and position the terminal in another spot as well. And don't yell at me, I have replaced broken springs on EUI's and solenoid's. On high mileage engines I don't like putting one new injector with a bunch of worn out ones. Just finished up a 7FB fuel system job in a PACCAR. Haven't seen one of them in awhile, so I had to paint it white. Sort of a rare truck, had air lift on the hood, factory installed low coolant level sensor, manual tach and speedo drive cables. It was also in a serial number range that I dislike. Cat put a plastic filter screen in the fuel system camshaft. Over time it can melt, come apart and or back out. I keep one in my tool box, as we don't stock them. Also had to put a snubber in the manual fuel psi connector, to slow down the bounce. Still had a bounce, told customer to add another one and see how it functions. And a 7LG ECM only came in with EUI codes. All six EUI codes was logged. They had a problem of getting water in the ECM. On the fresh air line, I make it real long hose and put at least three coils in the hose to trap any moisture. On the boost hose you have to order a special fitting from vintage parts. Replace hose fitting etc. Last time I priced a REMAN ECM, TDC, and personality module was, 8.5K. Most personality modes now are obsolete and you cannot get them any more. I purchased a adapter from torque wrench to socket. www.amazon.com/PANOVO-Change-Adapter-Electric-Screwdriver/dp/B076SDNJ8M/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=9%2F32+nut+driver+bit&qid=1696697144&sr=8-5
At 5:45, is that a service truck that got run over by a loader?
Saw that too!
Mechanic must have been having a rough day.
One of my Craftsman bit sets came with a 9/32 nut driver.
Harbor freight has a set of 1/4 shaft hex drivers that have served me well. The SAE set includes a 9/32.
Great video n content….
I’ve had this exact problem with my truck after having the dealer put a head on my truck. Every nut backed of all the injectors.
Ya, that torque by feel system just really doesn't work. Keep the good stuff coming Josh.
I haven’t had any problems with our C-12 in my departments ladder truck but we did have issues with the oil pressure sensor so we thought but it ended up being a clog in the return line. The sensor did go bad after awhile but both were fixed with no problems. It’s a 2002 and runs great 😊
Had one in a Sterling last week that #3 had a shorted connection to the engine brake housing.
Anytime I see these engines come in for a misfire, I'm hoping the camshaft didn't go down.
If someone was in there before you, I can't blame them for being skittish about over-tightening those nuts. First time inside my 04 C-12 I broke one of those studs right off. Crazy how easy it was to break it.
Should be able to pick one up at Napa pretty easy if not get the 1/4 hex to 1/4 square adapter and use a regular socket....9/32 is an extremely common size in the automotive world for body panels, hvac boxes, and dashes....especially on older vehicles they use those thing everywhere
The Napa filters don't get the Josh thumb up seal of approval.
I have a magnetic bit set I bought at harbor freight. I've had it for many years. It has a 9/32 bit. I looked at harbor freight and see they still sell a set with a 9/32.
For the injector - even at six sigma, one in a million parts is gonna be faulty. Of course, engineers do our best to aim higher, but everything has an error rate. That one must have been just a bit overhardened, and as metal fatigue got to it, it blew up catastrophically.
We have a couple guys at my shop, where if something is very stuck, default is going straight to the air hammer.
Josh just zip tie a sandwich bag to the air cleaner dust boot. I know sounds simple but it works.
That calls for a BEER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice catch. Weird that it wasn't intermittent.
Never seen that on a cat engine, but had a N14 cummins that blew the end clean off the injector. Had been running on fuel with salt water in it and went bang
watched a video of a c-7 repair. 2005 RV discovery. Guy purchased 2 injectors and mech who does not work on diesels is replacing. Unplug the harness and nothing changes? I turned it off, gave him the thumbs up, but I could not watch no more . You have corrupted me.... Keep the great videos you do!
1/4” socket driver will allow your 9/32 socket torque wrench to work, it’ll make the tool taller obviously and may not work in some situations, i don’t know where you get a 9/32 with hex shaft, maybe make one?
9/32 I always wondered what that thing was in the set for
harbor freight includes 9/32 in their $4 nut setter kit. $12 for the impact rated set.
Wow impressive cracked injector! looks like a material defect. I was turning a huge round of plate years ago and found a piece of process feed stock that did not melt completely and somehow made it through to the end product as a recognizable chunk of, smooshed pipe. I suspect your injector had a similar impurity in the stock it was made out of.
It's either that or the tech may have broken it somehow when going back together, the orings look new
The Wheeler Fat wrench is an amazing tool, I use it for it’s intended purpose of firearms maintenance lol
For those looking for one you can get them most sporting goods stores and websites in a variety of kits Wotan other tools you may need for things like scope mounting.
5:44 holy service truck accident!! :(
That cracked injector I have seen from fuel restriction before causing the injector to fire dry and heat up and crack and also water I have seen cause that as well.On cats it rare it’s restriction because of how it receives fuel from the head but I can say with confidence that crack is caused from heat most likely because of lack of lubrication. On 2 cycle Detriots injectors will do that when the return valve gets plugged up and the fuel flow pretty much dead heads and bam injector explodes.
you gave yourself away where you work I grew up three blocks from there. good video I have a 3208T that seems to be over fueling bad it just smokes don't think it is engine oil I did at first thinking they started it with starting fluid and broke rings but it pulls really good for that any ideas to look for on that it is in a 86 L8000 Ford truck thanks i may have a 9/32 driver you can have
A 9/32 Craftsman made in USA socket. You definitely had that for some time.
My Fat Wrench came with a ¼ hex x ¼ square socket adapter
One can almost conclude that taking good care of your equipment keeps your problems small🤔 (Happy 3rd!)
How often do you find something more simple like this? Stay safe and healthy. 9/32 use to be common on older vehicles. NAPA use to have a set with them, now Tractor supply or Harbor freight probably has a cheap set you are not going to apply much torque.
Josh use a 1/4 hex driver adaptor for your 9/32 socket on the fat wrench
1/4" hex to 1/4" or 3/8" square adapter. Use any socket you want. Tool truck should have one.
Just had the same problem with my Detroit after having some injectors replaced. Sadly i went a little too far with mine and broke a screw 🤦♂️
I found a bunch of those 9/32 drivers on Amazon. I actually have 2 or 3 kits with that size nut driver. I am guessing they may not be that available on the expensive tool trucks.
Can you start doing before and after sound clips of the trucks you repair?
Every shop has that one guy who can make ear loss levels of noise changing wiper blades.
Hi Josh.
🇬🇧Greetings from the UK.🇬🇧
Love your videos . Having just watched your latest (Old Grey Freightliner) and was amazed at the size of the dealership when you drove the vehicle round to it’s bay.
Just how big is it?
Saw a C10 injector crack like that. It actually split enough a little piece came off. No clue what caused it.
Nice to have a no parts repair now and then!
Did my boy Fordyce get a video appearance!?
When the big boss asked what the problem was with the gray Freightliner, I’ll bet you screamed “DEEZ NUTS!” Okay - maybe not.
Found it. 9/32 nut driver bit at McMaster part number 54515A54.
If you see a sign of Moisture on deep stick what does it mean? Because I have an MXS C-15 it has a little bit of moisture in deep stick and blow smock in the bottom of birthing pipe
9/32? i actually HAVE one of these in what you need that came in a multikit from, unbelievably, Black and Decker. and, if memory serves, that's also the same size as House Trailer panel screws on the exterior.
Broken injectors are wery often on marine c9, don't know is it because of bad diesel or what but most of the times when I do get a not working injector on cutout test it comes out like that 😕 some times the tip gets stuck in head 🤬
Oh Holy cow! I saw an RV like mine! Looks like a National RV Tradewinds (maybe a Tropical). I'm guessing it's a 330hp 3126? I have the 3126 and if you guys work on those, I can provide a TON of those from our National RV Club. No one really likes working on the CAT's.
We definitely work on them here. We do lots of RV work.
@@AdeptApe That's really awesome!! Thanks a lot for the ridiculously quick response!!
I’ve came across a lot of those nuts loose on low mileage engines at my work place
😎👍
Could water have caused that c7 injector failure? I've heard of it happening to Detroit's.
What’s up with the wrecked service truck?
Whats the story with that service truck at 5:45? 😮
I think someone is trying to trick you off 😂 probably a hidden camera somewhere
You need a good snapon truck 9/32 is in most 1/4 drive sets
Story behind that service truck thats smashed?
@5:37 so what’s the story with the totaled service truck?? That thing is mangled to say the least
What do you think of the 3176 Cat 😂Have one in the old 1990 Kenworth T450 dump truck I drive. Still running the truck has well over a million kilometers not sure about the engine its still running. The air compressor drive gear rattles so loud you can't hear any other engine knocking lol.
Lot of problems when they first came out. You had the 2YG, 7LG (3 ranges) and 9CK (3176B) the drive gear has a updated gear for the air compressor drive and power steering drive gear. Front cover inner and outer likes to crack, have to put updated bracket head to front cover. And on some alt bracket and A/C bracket. 2YG and 7LG can get water/moisture in the ECM. Updates you have to do to prevent this. On 2YG and 7LG if ECM fails you have to have a ECAP and timing indicator group to calibrate the sensor while engine is running. Also had issues with a coolant leak at water pump to oil cooler connection. Personality modules on 2YG and 7LG's are just about all gone. If you have one of these better make sure you can keep water out of electronics, as all three parts cost 8.5 K. So what engine do you have?
$5,000 shop bill for a loose injector connector😂😂
