A lot of legacy game franchises, your Mega Mans and Zeldas and Castlevanias and Fantasies Final, have rich musical legacies. I don't think any of them have one as versatile as Sonic. This was only two years after Sonic 3 and two years before Sonic Adventure. None of those soundtracks sound like each other and they all sound incredible.
Back then the composers had the heat on them to come up with a soundtrack to really portray the level and area but that sadly seems to of bin lost for just looking nice and pretty its a shame...
And all these franchises are in Super Smash Bros. it's amazing to think about to me. Like I probably would've never cared to step out and listen to the music from those series unless Smash gave me a taste of what they had to offer. I grew up with Sonic so I've been listening to the music for a long time. Heck if I hear a song, I can almost instantly tell you which game it's from, but I haven't even heard every Sonic song. Like I've never heard the songs on this soundtrack. I know the Genesis one, but I've only heard bits and pieces of the the Saturn version, and oh man am I loving it
speaking of Smash, it's a shame how little Sonic's music is represented in Smash. The only remix in the entire series is from brawl and we only got 2 new songs
When I was young couldn't afford games myself, I remember finding sonic 3d blast on sale for dirt cheap on pc. I had a Windows 98 and played w the keyboard. For a sonic game that was tough. This track is the one I remember the most from those days. Beautiful, thank you!

It's like the first level is Sonic discovering this awesome new place. But by Rusty Ruins he's concerned for the flickies. He's getting madder at Eggman, and he understands that he needs to get serious.

I also emailed Richard Jacques and he confirmed that he'd used this keyboard. It's the line "et in terra pax hominibus" from the Gloria from Mass XV (Dominator Deus). The exact recording it's taken from is from the Monks of l'Abbaye Saint Pierre de Solesmes (here it is on RUclips at 0:06 in, though the title is labelled incorrectly: ruclips.net/video/RIDVNtd5Lpg/видео.html). I'm not sure exactly which CD they would've found the chant on back in 1991, but at least we have the digitized version. It's because Richard Jacques composed it, he had a different style compared to Jun Senoue who was behind the Genesis version.
Richard Jacques' understanding and use of harmony is unmatched.
