Not really.. A lot of people are still super good at stuff till almost 100. Jeff stayed off the hard stuff, was a vegetarian, worked on cars a lot to stay strong, did what he liked to do. That makes an incredible difference, if you get to do what you want most of the time. I saw videos the first woman commercially successful pro drummer in the US, Viola Smith. She has videos from 1939 till fairly recently. I saw interviews with her at age 103 and her mind was still super sharp, she told tons of cool stories and still played drums some.. never retired. Finally passed like in 2019 or so. Think of all those that never got famous that are still jamming in older age! So yes, good health can go a long way.

He didn’t have kids to distract him. His wife didn’t seem too clingy. He could dedicate himself to his two main interests, playing guitar and working on his cars. All these things were to his advantage. He did things right. He seemed healthy…

The Master, still at the top of his game at 78 years of age. Many people of that vintage would be all crippled up with arthritis or some other debilitating condition, I believe Mr. Beck took good care of himself, never heard much about him abusing drugs or booze, cars being his other outlet. Finally felled by meningitis, this world is so unfair. Thanks for posting this now monumental footage.

First time I saw him was with Bozzio and Pino Palladino and I think his tinnitus was really bothering him but he was still great. Second time, I saw him in a grand old theater and he brought Beth Hart out to sing "Ain't Superstitious" and she just tore it up. Beck was even better when he had a strong singer to play off of. I also got stuck in traffic next to Jeff one fine California summer day. He and his drummer Simon were racing in their 32 Fords. Once traffic stopped I worked my way up next to him and said "hey, Jeff!" He looked at me and I said "You are fucking great, man!" He smiled and gave me a thumbs up.

Thanks for this post .. hard as it is to accept I’ve come to think of a quick passing (in older age) as a kind of gift, rather than a long drawn out illness. Learned that lesson with my pops. What a treat to live in the time of JB’s mastery, I have thoroughly enjoyed many moments of JB inspired awe. RIP good sir, you are missed.

I share the sentiments of all here. As I have said in other comments, Jeff is the greatest guitarist of my generation. I'm 71 and studied many of the greatest guitarists over the past 60 years. So I have the credentials to unequivocally state as fact that "Jeff is the greatest guitarist of my generation." I'm listening as I write, Jeff is doing it again. He is blowing my freaking mind. DO YOU HEAR IT?

You're welcome! I have most of the whole show, we were in the right balcony. I saw the 2 shows in NJ and then just decided to go to the last (I'm from Maryland). I have the bow at the end, just want to edit my crazy camera moves out of it first. So sad. Hard to believe!

Two shows in NJ and the tour finale in Reno, huh? Although it makes me wonder if you thought of hitting the DC show much closer to MD, that’s pretty similar to my case in 2018. Instead of LA, I went to see Jeff in Utah just outside of SLC. I had my reasons, though. I had friends driving up from Albuquerque and it was opening night of the Stars Align Tour (JB with Paul Rodgers and Ann Wilson of Heart). Although I saved hundreds on my airfare and hotel, $130 for a concert ticket is the most I’ve ever spent. Still, no regrets whatsoever

@Beanchowder I'm from NJ and my sister is a huge Johnny Depp fan so we went together to those. I picked Reno for my husband and I because I've never been to Reno (or Vegas even), we made seeing this show a short vacation to Nevada. It was beautiful, but I'm a baby when it comes to driving on mountain roads!
