As a 78-year-old man, I need the bittersweet reminders of what I once had and lost, to truly appreciate and cherish, the sweetness of what I will never have again. An incomparable talent on record and stage.
i was born in 42' so i guess you and i have seen many of the same - we had the best of times and as my friend said last week - be glad you are not 20. i always told my ex we will stay together for the memories - Paris in the 60s and all the great years that followed - 75' Joan on vinyl through a great audio system. Now today i listen to this with my 38 yr old and the memories we have are just as good and so many thought i would not be here to have them.
BTW: Bob Dylan said he liked this song. I think she once loved him very much, wanted to build her life with him. But Bob couldn't. He wasn't that type of man. He left her because it was getting too tight for him. He just wanted to stay freer. He was the type of man who wanted to keep things vague. (as she said) That's it. It must have been very painful for her when he left her. And this song is about the memories. Some wonderful memories (diamonds) and the rust. (Because it was so long ago, history is like old rust, it just crumbles. So it is with all old memories.) But we should know that the two of them have great respect for each other. He says very positive and nice things about her, and she says she appreciates him very much. Every now and then they hear from each other and have contact, and if only because of the music. Artists are like that. And because they know each other so well, they will never be indifferent to each other in life, i think.
It is a beautiful song. I don't think that you and I can do a speculate the details the of the relationship between them and what happened between them and why they did not last close together forever.
This song brings me back, so unwillingly, as it harkens to a time spent with a lost love. And, I mean, I LOVED her so, so much. And yes, I did in fact stay in a crummy hotel after we split just to watch her go to work. Sad. My heart skips a beat with each note of this song. So wonderfully performed, so poignant. Despite its heartbreaking tone, it is in my top ten of all-time favorites. Dylan apparently didn't know exactly what was right there in front of him.
Sir let me put something in perspective for you....remember that woman as she was... that will never fade... your youth..her youth, it will live in your heart like in those timeless love stories....if you were to live with her for years and years it may not have been so beautiful and pure....people get used to people theyre with unfortunatelly, they fight , sometimes cheat etc etc...its better to have felt what you have at least once in your life, even for a short while, rather then that the latter happened to you.....all the best, let this song take you to those great memories..
@@anaana2365 Oh, kind woman, thank you, thank you. Well stated while opening my eyes a bit larger, my head with your wisdom. You are right, so very, very right. I'll never know. What I felt back then will, as you suggested, always stay with me. And I should be grateful for that. Which I totally am. Are you a counselor or were you speaking from your own experiences?
@@jackmarin2928 I think most of us remember fondly of that "one that got away". Most of us probably blame ourselves for being selfish in the relationship at the time, or not totally appreciating what we once had. I still fondly remember my "lost love" and here, 40 years later, still love her as much today as I did then. But I don't dare contact her. For one, she's probably married, and I wouldn't want to interfere in that relationship. But also because sometimes our memories are sweeter to behold than reality, and I think I'd rather keep those memories where they are, and the way they are.
@@Beeracuda922 So well put, Bruce, so poignant, spot on. And though that lost pains me now and then, I, too, have kinda, nearly put it in the same memory bank as you have. Nice of you to reply!!
On the other hand, some people do stay together for the rest of their lives, without being very disappointed. But of course the honeymoon stage doesn’t last forever. It’s not meant to.
There's an old saying "Men choose women for what they are; women choose men for what they think they can make of them..." Bob chose her for access to the scene & all her contacts. Joan chose Bob 'cos she thought she could make him faithful - right after he had dumped Suzie Rotolo for her...
Yes she is singing her relationship with Bob Dylan. In a way she was the one gave him a platform to fame, and he dropped her like a hot potato in London. I love Bob Dylan’s talent but not his opportunist way. He is far from genuine as Joan Baez is.
Gotta remember that we aren't privy to all that went on in their relationship. Which is why I hate giving people relationship advice, because you're only hearing one side of the story instead of the complete picture. And people are always going to give you a glorified version of their story.
Dylan's performance style was indeed nostalgic, a throwback to yesteryear, though most now associate nasal singing as "Dylanesque". Dylan also had a genius for vagueness, while appearing to be specific. Don't love Dylan, he was a subversive hypocrite with a hidden agenda. Admire his propagandistic virtuosity, but don't love the dirty little troll.
What do you think his agenda is? As far as I can tell, he has gone through various phases and played with various ideas. (Is he still a Christian? Or has he moved on to something else now?) He never claimed to have the truth-and even said he didn’t like people to expect that of him. (Although he did seem to play with the public, to cultivate an air of mystery or profundity, to keep audiences interested.) He once said something to the effect that he was better than Leonard Cohen, but I think the opposite was probably true. Cohen had more genuine things to say.
I like her more recent last line- “if you’re offering me diamonds and rust… I’ll take the diamonds”!!! Haha I must have listened to this song a billion times.. I just love it ❤️
A talented musician who also helped amnesty international get started. This song is about her relationship with Bob Dylan. She is the more talented musician and her poetry is brilliant . Honestly Bob even admitted how he cannot play guitar like she can. A wonderful human rights activist. Even Steve Jobs dated her
I look at the portrait of Joan, and I do not understand, how stupid that man (Bob Dylan) could be to brake such a relationship. She's so fenomenal, great, wonderful. beautyful .....
remembering the past. I never agreed with her politics but she has a wonderful voice that will live forever and move people to feel, to remember the good times and the bad.
Joan was in love with Bob Dylan and wanted him to stay in the folk genre of music He moved on and just faded away. Somewhere around 1974 Bob called Joan on the phone to see how she was doing. She was kind of like wow you abandoned me and now what. So Joan wrote this song about her love affair with Bob Dylan. Bob should have just married her and been content Perhaps he felt guilty and that is why he called her out of the blue after almost ten years. Most men fail to understand you do not pick a woman, the woman and her mother pick you and then you either can say yes or no. Once you say yes you better well mean yes wife, babies etc.

This type of storytelling in songs makes you feel what the artist felt....no singer in the scene now will be able to do something like this....this is unrepeatable...and I think I read somewhere that she wrote the song in like a hour.....as the song says " if youre bringing me diamonds and rust then Ive already paid."...it was not hard to write as you feel I guess...
Singers and songwriters put their entire soul out there for others to hear back in those days. Today, it seems like most just slap together anything that rhymes, without much context at all. If there is a story to be told, it seems to be a very shallow and vague one, at best.
@@Beeracuda922 Why, oh why, do so many think their time was the only one that had the songs and music with meaning and importance. Here are 2 versions of one single, more recent song, that has a haunting sense of depth and poignancy that touches me deeply. Joan Baez is incomparable, there is no doubt about it. Where's the meaning of this song? It's just the lyrics. And Rob Halford sings this song better.
LOL
Dear Jon
It's about Bob Dylan and their relationship back in the '60s. It's directly from her heart. Judas Priest covered it but it's Joan's song.
When living blissfully in ignorance.😂
Halford sings the song better?!!!! Cut the dosage, bro. That's like saying you've seen a better rendition of the Mona Lisa.

What a beautiful voice. "Eyes bluer than robin's eggs". I am 70, this song makes me cry.
One of her finest if not the best composition of this beautifully talented icon. Joan Báez.

There Are some red flags in the Text you Are Right!
she knows that a light year is a measure of distance, not time, though, right?
Sure she does know a couple of years and a couple of lightyears are the same time span but lightyears also indicate miles traveled in that time
It is a fine poetic image--an appeal to imagination, not a theorem in physics. And as an image it works, because it evokes a great gulf of time.
time and distance not only distance 😳
