DiPP is compelling in the sense that it's reflective of a time when ZUN didn't know what direction he wanted to go in with the series:
EoSD is Western because it's ironic that an *Eastern* series would do that for its continuity reboot. It's ironic that this paradise ends up being a death-trap for the honest men.
I'm fond of the interpretation that it takes place before the current age, probably around Meiji 17 (1884). ZUN named it "Shanghai Alice of Meiji 17" in apparent reference to Shanghai's French occupation. These "honest men" (likely criminals) fled to Japan to escape the consequences of their crime, and somewhere along the way, they fell through the rabbit hole into an Eastern Wonderland.
Opium was a very big problem in China in the late 1800s among the urban working poor (and indulgent tourists), but it was also a fear of surrounding countries (Japan and the Philippines in particular were paranoid about the opium-addiction epidemic spreading). Maybe they had smuggled opium into Japan, among other crimes? It's also possible that the "blonde" the narrator of "U.N. Owen was Her?" was talking about doesn't refer to the Shrine Maiden (who could be the red-white figure of the Comiket 62 CD itself), but rather the blonde girl who emerges from the mansion at the end (who may be the girl on the cover art, and potentially the one "reborn" into something that isn't human). The original text only asks if an unspecified "she" was always a blonde, so maybe it was the not-so-human girl? She was the only girl out of the eight honest "men" says the shrine maiden.
Gensokyo, at least as ZUN was writing it before Mountain of Faith, was a "Pseudo Paradise" in many different ways. As if the exciting blend of East and West in the Meiji Period went on forever and ever, never devolving into the imperial designs of the later Taisho... Of course, such a paradise can only exist in Gensokyo, where the unreal can be real and the past can remain the future as well.

I think the story takes place before the events of the Touhou games, with the shrine maiden mentioned being a previous Hakurei shrine maiden/one of Reimu's ancestors.

Dolls in Pseudo Paradise is fascinating because it shows that Zun had a very strong interest in giving Touhou more of an antique aesthetic originally, this style kinda fell off as Touhou went on but some of this antique aesthetic can be seen in traces in PCB, IN and PoFV.
I wonder what Touhou would look like now if ZUN had continued his antique western/eastern fusion style? ZUN also seemed to be much more interested in chinese culture in the early windows era with a lot of taoist and buddhist imagery over exclusively shinto ones.

DiPP gotta be my favorite story Zun's ever written and there sure are a lot of things and references to pay attention to. For instance the story makes numerous references to opium which was a real problem in China late 1800s. Then there's the fact that the culprit is called a "pierrot" which a French mime. There's so many small details and points to unwrap in that story that it would take a whole 10 page pdf document and we'd still not cover all of it. My condensed thoughts and guesses on DiPP are that it happens between 1885 and early 1900s because of the opium references, the men are western occupiers of Hong Kong from that time, and this story is Alice's origin story as to how she became a youkai.

@@spirit-eye In fact, the story is very similar as "And then there were none" by Agatha Christie. That is also in this book that we see the name U.N. Owen. I saw the big lines on wikipedia and I'm very surprised nobody talks about it. We know, when seeing the story on the touhou wiki, that there is 7 men and 1 women, making the total as 8 people, and that the women survives. By comparing And then there were none and DIPP : in both the killer is among the group, in both it say the number left : "And then there were [number]" (in a song in the book, because those people are dying like the song) and "After that, there were [number] honest men left" (ending the text in the songs in DIPP).
But something surprised me : there is no "After that, there were four honest men left" in the end of Enigmatic doll text. Instead, it end by "Then something hot ran down my back." Also for two and one left, replaced respectively by "All light completely vanished, with no time for me to cry out." (just after seeing the face he expected to see) and "In exchange for my life, I wished to see that vision again. However, only the first part of the wish came true." (wondering if that shrine maiden he saw at some point was blonde).
My theory : the fifth, the third and the second left are possibly the woman. The fifth (wise one) is stuck while others escaped, that maybe mean that the body is not found after, meaning that death is not confirmed. The third (wary one) suspect one of the two others to have poisoned the fourth. He "picked out the right coffee and bought to everyone's rooms" and the fact that he don't drink what he doesn't prepare can make his as the killer, but he is nailed at a tree and he saw the culprit at this moment (I think we can't nail ourself to a tree alone in silence, since there is no cry). As for the second (earliest riser one), he take the poisoned breakfast that he think the other one prepared, and he wonder if the shrine maiden he saw was really that blonde. If the shrine maiden is Reimu, it's impossible, since she has brown hair. At this point, I think that the "pierrot" had already left the group by making them thinking that she is dead, then act secretly, like the culprit in "And then there were none". So for me, that girl is the fifth, the wise one.
Why I don't see people argue about this instead of saying it's Alice or Clownpiece ? Feel free to give me your feedback if you didn't understood a point or think I am wrong. I love a good mystery like this.
      The story of DIPP :
      en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Dolls_in_Pseudo_Paradise/Story
Quick edit : I saw all the comments after writing this one and I saw you already put the link in one of the comments, but I will keep this one here so people can avoid searching in every comment. For the link with Agatha Christies book, @Welty (down in the comments) talk about it better than me since I did not read it yet. I just discover this link very recently after years without knowing that and decided to come back on track and give another try.

That is true,DiPP took place during year 1885,how people understand this when they see the title of one of DiPP's songs (Shanghai Alice of Meiji 17).....
This is meiling theme and is a reference to (team Shanghai Alice),the team that works on touhou games, but I founded this person who told that the title of the theme may be a reference Meiji 17 period of Japan, when this period was happening in japan,sino/french ended with french army victory.french took over Indochina and Tibet and some coastal cities of east china, similar to British and Spanish who took Hong Kong and macao.shanghai is an interesting part of this theme, because after the opium war or even world war one and two,Shanghai had been divided into three parts, the Chinese, the Japanese and the international part.
ZUN is really skillful to write this story and reference the history.

I'm really glad that others seem to like the story of dipp just as much as I do, it really is a fascinating story with lots of different references and things to keep track of. What I particularly like about dipp is the connection it has to the book "And Then There Were None" and all the clues leading up to whom the Pierrot truly is, even though the pierrot is most likely Alice (assuming that pierrot is someone we know) I really like thinking that it's flan because of the previously mentioned connection to "and then there were none".

I want to read And Then There Were None some time since it has connections to PiPP and Flandre, In an English class in my Highschool we were going to read the book and I was super exited for it because of its connection to Touhou, but sadly we ran out of time in that class and we read the original Frankenstein book (which is very weird) so I just have to read it on my own

For me, the most interesting story in the Comiket 63 version is “Circus reverie”.
“Alright, next on stage is a bird man.
This bird man was somehow born from the union of a human and a rare bird of paradise that only lives far to the south.
His parents had died a long time ago, so we took pity on the poor orphan and brought him into our troupe. Isn't that kind of us?”
This story is so interesting because it has absolutely nothing to do with Touhou at all. Pretty much all the other stories are at least loosely connected to the world of Gensokyo, but this one bring up bizarre and random things which are never brought up again.
If I had to guess what this story means, is that this was likely an early idea that was later scrapped, as some of the other stories are based on future games.
Being even more speculative, maybe this was an early idea for a backstory to Rinosuke, since he is pretty much one of the only men in Touhou, and is a half-human half-youkai, but that’s pretty much were the connections end.

A bit late, but my theory is that this story actually takes place in the past, before even the PC-98 games. The details of the story like the pierrot, the old western style building, and the fact that the 8 honest men don't seem to have access to any modern technology makes me think that this takes place in at least the 1800s.
As for the shrine maiden, my thoughts are that maybe it's one of Reimu's predecessor's/ancestor's?
The old western style building in a forest makes me think of something like Marisa's house, so maybe it was overgrown building in the forest of magic.

Yeah, I heard in a recent interview with ZUN, that ZUN totally forgot about the Pierrot, and for the killer, with how disconnected DiPP is from current Touhou cannon, I don't really think the identity of the killer is very important.

DiPP is one of the things in Touhou I constantly come back to, and it's because of this. It's so mysterious, and weird. It feels so out of place but so intriguing at the same time. All the songs are amazing, too, but I think the tale of the eight honest man is what's the most interesting.
Here are a few things I'd like to note about this album:
    - In the comiket 63 version of the story, more specifically in the "U.N. Owen was Her?" section, has a line that is eerily similar to a line said by one of the characters in And Then There Were None. It's not exactly the same line, but it's interesting nonetheless. In DiPP, it says: "You lack imagination. You'd probably fall into their trap. A criminal with as much imagination as U.N. Owen could easily have a rope around your neck." Meanwhile, in And Then There Were None, Philip Lombard says: "Your lack of imagination is going to make you absolutely a sitting target. A criminal of the imagination of U.N. Owen can make rings round you any time he-or she-wants to." Pretty curious.
    - Well, the connections with And Then There Were none shouldn't be ignored. In And Then There Were None, a group of 10 people, all accused of murder, are slowly killed one-by-one by a character called U.N. Owen (a play on words which means "Unknown"), and the killer is one amongst them. In DiPP, there are 8 honest men, people implied to be thieves, that are killed one by one by a mysterious Pierrot. Given that the stories are pretty similar, the most popular Touhou song is included on this album, and it's named after U.N. Owen, it makes me wonder if Flandre is somehow involved with DiPP. I'll admit, this is honestly a stretch, but it gets you thinking about it. There are more references to And Then There Were None in Touhou, like how Marisa and Flandre talk about the "Ten Little Soldiers" rhyme in EoSD. Another one I can think of is Akyuu using a pen named "Agatha Q" in Forbidden Scrollery, a reference to And Then There Were None's author, Agatha Christie.
    - I'm somewhat positive that DiPP is entirely canon, given how it came out on the same day EoSD did. This is pretty weak evidence all things considered, but given the references to And Then There Were None found in EoSD, it makes me think that ZUN intended for both stories to be related in some indirect way. But like I said, this is pretty weak evidence.
    - Believe it or not, there are a few references to DiPP found in later Touhou media. For example, one of Alice's dolls is named Hourai. One of her spell cards in PCB is called "Malediction「Hanged Hourai Dolls」", while another one of hers in IaMP, SWR, and Hisoutensoku is called "Curse「Hourai Doll」". The fact that the last one is even referred to as a "curse" makes it even more interesting. Curiously, the last person to die in both And Then There Were None and DiPP does so by hanging themselves, making her spell card in PCB a lot more curious. For the record, Mokou also has a spell card in IN called "Hourai Doll". However, I'm not entirely sure if it has any connections to DiPP, since it could just be a reference to the tale of the bamboo cutter, the story that inspired IN.
Yeah, this is quite a lot, but hopefully this helps a few people understand and know a bit more about DiPP, since it has more depth to it than people give it credit for, despite its simplicity. As to whom I think the Pierrot is, when does this story takes place, the mysterious flying shrine maiden… I have my own thoughts, but honestly, they are kind of irrelevant. I just like to see others talking about it, since that's most likely what ZUN intended to do with it. Create a discussion. That's the magic of DiPP for me, it's what it makes it stand out amongst other Touhou CD albums, and, hell, even official Touhou media as a whole. I really hope ZUN just doesn't come out of the blue and reveal all the mysteries this album brings, because if he did that, then the magic would evaporate in a matter of seconds. But yeah, DiPP rocks, and I hope this fandom appreciates it more.

DiPP is like the ur-text for the whole Grimsokyo contingent. The idea of it being a far future Gensokyo where most of the cast is long dead, the Scarlet Devil Mansion is abandoned, and only an insane Flan is left running amok is such a great fanfic premise. Occam's razor however really would suggest it's just a non-canonical vignette from a fuzzy period after PC-98 continuity but before the tone and vibe of the new era was fully fleshed out (look at how weird and trippy 6-9 are compared to 10 onwards even)

In the same way, Jacket girl disguised herself as a shrine maiden, she probably stole label girl's clothes, hence why she had long blonde hair.
label girl would only appear at the beginning of the story, she would be the shrine maiden who dances outside until it rains and gets wet.
probably in an unexplained part. labelko leaves his clothes out to dry and jacketko "borrows" them.
