Like such other assimilated German-speaking Czech Jews as Franz Kafka and Gustav Mahler, Viktor Ullmann lived a life of multiple estrangements, cut off from Czech nationalism, German anti-Semitism, and Jewish orthodoxy.
The Three Yiddish Songs, Op. 53 were composed during his imprisonment in the Theresienstadt concentration camp. He was later transferred to Auschwitz and was killed.
The songs are based on Yiddish folk tunes and poetry from the 1930's Jüdische Liederbuch collection. The works are more complex than they seem-rich with inner voices, syncopated rhythms, and discordant harmonies, reflecting contemporary musical styles.
Ullmann combines folksong and art song under the unifying theme of loneliness and longing.
    1. Di Beryozkele - Berjoskele - Little Birch
A reflection within Yiddish music. Somber, longing. The singer asks a little birch tree to act as a mediator between herself and the divine by sending prayers to end her yearnings. It's a song about the estrangement of the poem’s narrator, a visitor to a village, whose prayers will not be understood by the local god. Facing the confusion of the modern world which disrupts the coming of age, the discovery of identity, and the decision to cross borders demanded by rites of passage.
    2. Margaritkelekh - Margarithelech - Little Daisy
A young girl, Chavele, sings carefree in the forest, and enjoys the delights of nature and of a young man who visits her.
    3. A meydl in di yorn - A Mejdel in die Johren - A Maiden No Longer Young
The story of a no-longer-young woman being left at the altar. The wedding celebration that never happened is characterized by syncopation. The text is a morality play meant to teach young women to choose wisely when deciding on whom to marry :)

Mr. Kurganov, it is Greta to hear you play as usual. I need to make a video recording's for audition's competition's etc. Due to this, I wish to buy a microphone. What would you recommend and how would I use it (since it's also a video). I think this will help capture the sound of the violin better. Rather than phones.

Thanks :) I think if you're just recording videos at home and you want a decent setup, there are a few options. First off, you should always record in Stereo. The simplest setup would be to look at a Zoom H5 or H4n Pro. This has decent built-in microphones and accepts professional microphones if you decide to upgrade your setup later. It also works as an interface for recording from the computer, or using for video calls, etc. The next level up, I would say get something like the Zoom F3 and good affordable professional microphones. I suggest LineAudio microphones (CM4 and OM1). This will give you professional quality if you are in a good space, and position the microphones normally. For very high-end recording (or if you need more than 2 microphones) I would simply go to a studio or hire a freelance remote engineer. I don't think this is necessary for audition videos. The most important thing for great sound (aside from the playing!) is 1. The space (violins need to BREATHE, so a church or a hall is ideal) 2. Microphone placement (I recommend ORTF or NOS if you are using 2 microphones) 3. Microphone quality and 4. The preamp/interface/recording device. I hope that helps! Now in terms of using your phone for video, the best bet is to record the audio and video separately and then combine them in simple editing software. This is better for 2 reasons. 1. There is no practical solution for recording high-quality stereo sound into a phone. 2. It's important that the video and audio recording are not in the same place. Video should probably be farther away, especially if you play with a pianist, and the microphones should ideally be 1-2 meters away from you, and 1 meter above, pointing down. It can also be at eye level. Combining audio and video in an editor is very easy. You can find a youtube tutorial for that. iMovie is very simple software that can easily do this. My favorite editor is Davinci Resolve, which is professional (and free!) software. Best of luck.
