    Messiaen: Thème et variations, I / 10
Daniel Kurganov (violin), Constantine Finehouse (piano)
    00:00 Thème. Modéré
    01:56 Var. 1, Modéré
03:33 Var. 2, Modéré, un peu vif
04:32 Var. 3, Modéré, avec éclat
05:20 Var. 4, Vif et passionné
    06:29 Var. 5, Très lent
Through the music of this album, we have endeavored to juxtapose two narratives: one of lost memories and anguish, and one of openness and potential. As these narratives battle before our eyes in the real world, may this music serve that dialectic, wherein we accept the burden of darkness and reach towards lightness.

C'est d'une beauté incroyable, la musique, et la façon dont elle est jouée

Congratulations Professors Kourganov and Finehouse! Beautiful duo ! I asked my professors why Olivier Messiaen is not studied or plaid in France in music conservatories: they answered he is « too typical catholic faith »….so the only way I have to listen to Olivier Messiaen concert and musical analysis is the festival Messiaen in La Grave ( France) every years in July. I hope you will be invited there !
Thank you to play Olivier Messiaen here!!

I especially appreciate the tempo and sense of space (cf. Oistrakh who performs it faster). Very compelling performance. Colors would please Messiaen!

wondering about the violin we heard. Glad to have discovered you.

Thanks so much, Esther. Yes, as Constantine speculated, it's probably a piece that Oistrakh learned quickly, and played some number of times, and that's that. Not "serious music" in Soviet mindset, but "interesting" enough to play. We lived with this piece and had long rehearsals and discussion about tempo and color. It's wonderful to know the message has been received! The violin I play on is made by Andrew Ryan, made in 2013.

the Parisian building where Messiaen lived, and at the very end of the video a Japanese blackbird.

Beautiful music and performance, but the constant focus hunting and nervous camerawork is regrettable (inconsistent with the music).

Well, when you self-produce and teach a friend how to hold/work a camera on a gimbal in 10 minutes, set focus to auto and pray...worse things can happen :)

@@DanielKurganov Then I commend you for what you accomplished. I think the world is coming out from a long fatiguing period of overpaid video production boutique opportunists who just didn't care about classical music, and it showed in their work. Real artists doing what they can, indie-style, is a whole different thing.
