I think you are right when you say that JLR want them to be locked so that if (when) they are stolen, you have to buy the parts from JLR at great expense to have any hope of getting them going again! I had a new 2020 Evoque for a couple of years. Decent, reliable cars, but from experience the engines do seem to burn a bit of oil for the first 10k or so. After that the consumption seems to improve.

The more manufacturers do to stop these cars being stolen the better in my opinion. I think Aiden went above and beyond to get this car running, he is a really clever man and of course will have to keep learning so he can keep up to date. The complexity and difficulty of this makes me wonder if very soon it will be impossible to fix cars, even for yourself and Aiden. So your only recourse would be the dealer whom you cannot afford, so the car is junk. This is insane.
The ‘UWB’ = Ultra Wide Band which uses a ‘spread spectrum’ technique to defeat narrow band signal repeaters often used to steal vehicles from driveways. Because the data is spread over far more megahertz, it can’t be repeated due to the high data exchange. Traditional key fobs use only a few ‘bytes’ of data and narrowband spectrum which make them far less secure !. Landrover must have moved to the secure gateway system where any work on their vehicles can only done via authorised ‘terminals’ connected via cellular encryption. We’re finally in the 21st century !. I’m sure Aidan might have some time soon where he can sketch this stuff out for you Rob, it’s a fascinating new development to overcome the low security of fundamental systems of the past.

Best advice any JLR owner can take is turn off/disable the keyless entry. Insurance is sky rocketing for them due to the theft.

Ultra-wideband to be precise🧐I once knew the maths behind "mere" wideband used to make phone calls. Now phones use UWB too.
