Synopsis
Based on the true story of prominent mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr, who seemed to be guaranteed a promising future when he won international acclaim due to his pioneering work in the field. After he is recruited to assist the military with top-secret code-breaking duties, the high-pressure job takes its toll on him, and he begins to develop a mental illness.

To me the first sign they weren't real was when the girl runs around through the pigeons and none of them take off.

The 1st sign is the radioactive implant that gives him codes. Not remotely possible. Since they didn't inform us at the beginning of the film it's based on a true story the watcher ignores it and thinks maybe this is just a bit of fantasy.

I absolutely adore Denzel Washington. And he was soooo badass in Training Day.
But Russell Crowe should of got the Oscar for this..

Even after "the big reveal" the rewatch value of this film is through the roof. There's always something I seem to have missed before.
Fun fact about this movie. Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly met on set. She was his childhood celebrity crush in the '80s, and widely considered one of the most beautiful women in the world in the 1990s. When they met, he was determined not to try to impress her, so they just talked about books. Well, about a year later, September 11, 2001 happened. Jennifer lived in New York, and Paul spent two days frantically trying to get ahold of her. When he finally got her on the phone, he made sure she was okay, then something to the effect of, "I'm going to come visit, and let's get married." They've been married for over 20 years now.
She is my husbands #1 celebrity crush. She is absolutely beautiful!!!
I love every time I hear their story, so rare to have such a long lasting and off the spotlight marriage in Hollywood. Love them!

I thought it was an outrage and still do. Crowe carried the movie and it won best picture, because of him. It's a Top-5 all-time performance for me but politics ruled the day.
If you liked this movie you should react to Awakenings with Robin Williams and Robert De Niro! It's an amazing true story about patients who had encephalitis which caused them to go into a catatonic state for decades, and then they were given a new medication that caused them to "awaken" after decades of being in a coma-like sleep. I think it's also one of Robert De Niro's most underrated performances!

His love for his wife lasted until his last breath - they died together in a taxi cab as a result of a car wreck in New Jersey. and his son was also diagnosed with schizophrenia. 💕🌈

Just noticed an early reveal in this movie: When Charles first asks him out drinks, they're then shown playing pool together in bar. John's friends then walk into the bar and one asks "who's winning? you or you?" because from their POV John is playing alone. He looks confused but doesn't question what they mean.
Mental illness is very real❤
This is a gorgeous story about a paranoid schizophrenic and what they go through, sometimes, for years.
The fear of being medicated because it takes something away from you is very understandable with the pharmaceutical industry having their hands in so much medical influence.

The joke "Have you met my friend, Harvey?" this is a reference to a movie called "Harvey" that they would have seen since it came out in 1950. It stars James Stewart, he goes about town with his imaginary friend, a 6 foot rabbit who goes by the name of Harvey.
Another masterpiece Russell Crowe/Ron Howard colab was also based on a true story during the great depression about a boxer called "Cinderella Man". Crowe is just as brilliant and the story just as good.
One of the best performances in history of cinema
At 47:39, what they were conducting was called insulin shock therapy. It was a common practice back in the 1940's and 1950's in psychiatric institutions for people who had schizophrenia. But they no longer do that now. Great movie reaction!
When Paul Bettany came into the room and you said “it’s vision!” I thought “how the hell did he understand it on the spot???” 😂 it took me a few seconds to realize that you meant the avengers character, and not that this guy was an actual vision of Russell Crowe😂🤦🏼♀️ you are always very insightful, but if you understood it so as he walked through the door, you would have scared me 😂

The script by Akiva Goldsman is itself genius besides everything else we see and hear, a wonderful movie that leads us astray to reveal a beautiful truth...I believe the illusions Nash really had were auditory, he heard voices, Goldsmans genius was to turn them into visual ones and real people,,,,,
This is Russell Crowe’s greatest role. He won an Oscar for Gladiator and got nominated the next year for this. He lost to Denzel in Training Day I believe.

Exactly what you said. I’ve worked with many mental health patients suffering from schizophrenia. It is very real. That’s why they cannot accept that it’s a hallucination and many refuse to take medication. Then the hallucinations get worse, they cannot function in society. After years of hell, families give an ultimatum. Take meds or leave for the sanity of the rest of the family. Then they become homeless with limited resources. And it’s a vicious cycle. Our mental health system in the US is a joke.
I think you will love Imitation game with Benedict Cumberbatch (dr Strange), one of my favorite actors. It's a amazing movie based on a true story ans the life of one of our biggest genius, Alan Turing, who basically invented computers

His room mate kept him sane even though he wasn’t real. It was his own subconscious begging him to eat (i have respect for pizza), socialize, go out, etc. So in a way, Charles did help him; real or not.
Russel was favourite to win another Oscar for this movie. Then... "Russell Crowe has been charged with second-degree assault after allegedly throwing a telephone at a hotel employee." The Academy won't give an Oscar to someone with a bad reputation. Then 20 years later they give one to Will Smith right after he smacks someone in the face, right there on stage. Go figure!!

Great reaction, honestly. Just one pointer: it's not the Nobel Peace Prize, he won the Nobel Math Price. Peace is just a category of many.
Actually this was the Nobel prize for Economy. There is no Nobel prize for maths, instead we have things like the Fields medal or the Abel prize. He later (2015) also won the Abel prize (for something completely different) and died together with his wife in an accident on the way back home.
Why economy? His new concept "game theory" had a lot of impact on that. It is a mathematical approach on how "players" act or should act in a competitive scenario, great to understand competitive behavior. This became especially useful in economics where the players would be companies or such.

'Patch Adams' with the late great robin Williams is a wonderful film that i haven't seen any reaction to. Also a film inspired by a person who wants to make a difference to the world.

Wasn’t this amazing. I knew you would love it. That is true love his wife never giving up on him. Him learning what he had to do to cope. The trick is getting others around you to help you through your coping skills. ❤
I think you would enjoy The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus (2009) directed by Terry Gilliam starring Heath Ledger in his last role which had to be finished posthumously with the help of Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Ferrel
Nash's wife (Jennifer Connelly) in this movie is in Requiem for a Dream and that my sir is a horror story, because it's about drugs. I watched it as a kid and it literally kept me from ever doing any drugs. The twist in this movie and that it is based on a real person. Obviously a lot was Hollywood, like the pen tradition, but still it is a beautiful story. He didn't even speak at the Nobel Prize ceremony because of concerns of his mental illness. So Hollywood is going to Hollywood. Another movie about a teacher you need to watch is Mr. Holland's Opus.
My husband had vascular dementia, and he had many hallucinations. It was hard for me, but I can't begin to imagine how hard it was for him.

My son suffers from schizophrenia. It's true when John Nash's wife says that you love the person they used to be. Mental illness is so hard because you can't physically see it. If someone has a broken leg, you see the cast and can empathize with the person. With mental illness you can't and often don't understand it

I was going to enter the airport and saw him and his wife with some journalists at the toll gate. I had no idea who was he. I thought an another famous guy came to holiday to my country. Then I got who he is on the news at 7 pm.
Unfortunately this is more Hollywood than truth. But doesn't change fact it is great story with a great twist and a beloved cast doing it. I just adore the sound track as well.
Just saw this was here and haven't watched it yet, but I am going to guess this is going to be a great view. I think your sensitivity and wonderful insight are a great match for this amazing movie. And.... here I go!

An incredible film, with Russell Crowe carrying you convincingly along Nash's journey.
And your enormous and deep heart; it carries us viewers along on the journey this film takes you.
This authenticity is what brings us back to your channel; we come for the read your heart provides.
For however 'beautiful' it is that Alicia is able to, through force of mind, see Nash as the man she loved and transform herself into the woman who loves him...how is that any different than the fantasies his schizophrenia forces on him?
Alicia is intentionally inducing a false perception on herself.
Is it love? Codependence? What is it? And is it healthy? And for whom?
And the idea of falsity itself fails and falls before that force of mind.
You have the cause/effect turned the wrong way around.
The desire to do important work does not drive the schizophrenia; the schizophrenia drives the obsession to do 'important' work.
Schizophrenia is a genetic-based biochemical condition.
Medication can mute it to some extent, but it is incurable and chronic.
It gets more intense as you age; symptoms are mild, even negligible, at first, but eventually becomes invasive and disruptive.
It can become so problematic that the schizophrenic becomes a danger to himself or others.
The fact that Nash eventually is able to self-manage is astonishing. Note though that he relies on his relationship with his wife Alicia; he cannot self-manage on his own.
The 'Big Brother' guy is actor Ed Harris, who was in "The Truman Show", "Apollo 13", "The Right Stuff", and "The Abyss".
You really should do a reaction to "Harvey", starring James Stewart. Another great film.

One of my favorites. I rarely comment but hope it helps.
It's so terrifying to be ill in the mind. It's beyond me how a person can cope and still they (we) do. There is this vlogger guy with scitsofrenia. He has hallucinations and he has a service dog he can ask if the threatening person is real. If the dog doesn't react to the person he knows it's not real. I understand most scitsofrenic hallucinations are threatening and agressive.
It's so reassuring to see the stories of exceptional people being accepted like this by a community. We'll be richer through inclusivity.
Three other good movies are one flew over the cuckoo's nest and the theory of everything and the immitation game.

It was the Nobel Prize for Economics, not the Nobel Peace Prize... different Discipline.
I like this movie, but i think it' s not a good movie (please don't start charging with hatred and rage for my reasoning, and try to listen and get another prospective)...
I like this movie because i love the emotions and depiction of how people feel and react at certain situations, how they deal with them... I love the way it tells the sadness, the pain, the isolation... But also how people can help you in your darkest times... And, for a movie, it's well acted, well directed, the photography is on point, and I love the misdirection that Charles is real at the beginning of the movie... It' s a cool twist (if you didn't already know the story of John Nash)...
But there many things that i didn't like... For one, some dialogues are "cool" but very unrealistic, people don' t talk like that, the way they handled it's "original idea" or how to develop an intricated thoght to develop something... And i disliked or found funny many dialogues or scenes... Like the one at the Pentagon where he's so deep in analyzing the codes on the wall, and the time passes etc... It' ok to narrate or exaggerate some scenes, but at some point they become ridiculous... Somethings were not "real" in the sense that didn't really happend to John Nash, (which some weren't a problem, and others were)... And i'm very sick, of the Aesperger Genius who can do anything becouse he's smart and talks unreallistically... Magnuss Carlsen said something very cool (if i'm not mistaken it was him who said this thing)... "Being called a genius is not a compliment, becouse the idea of a genius is that he can easily do something, so it ignores all the hourse, days, years of hard that somebody put in to being good or excelent at something... Because if he's a genius, he' s already good at it... He doen't need to train or study... Or not as much..."
And there are many of these "Oscar Bait" movies which are quite similar, and in many times are not realistic, but they talk about real people... I think it's okay to have some creative writing by adding things to the story, because it' still a movie with something to transfer, but many of these Biographical movies are kind of irrealistic, or cringe at some point.
So in the end, i love the depiction of some emotions and problems, but since it's suppose to biographical, tell the real stuff.
And for the Schizophrenia depiction it's nice, but how they risolve, can suggest that if yuo're smart you can figure it out... It's no put that plain in the movie, but it could give this misinformation, that being smart solves the thing.
And the scientific parts they were ok, i stil hate the idead that one day he wole up, or saw something and immediatly found the result...
So i Like this movie, but i don't thing it's good movie... for example i much prefer Will Hunting, because it's show the human side of being a person, and not this doll of irrealistic "intelligence".
But even so, i like some parts of the movie, because i can relate, and others whitch i really don't like or hate...

I'm teerrribly sorry FreezyFranklin but I have to tell you about the audio of this reaction video: You must have used some feature (like "3D pace" or "extra wide stereo") to imrove the sound of your "condenser mic," but it did the oppositee. I.e. it didn't improve at all. Instead it produced a weird gain effect that produces flutter, sway & amplification to your voice at the end of each sentece while you comment on each entence. Sometimes even the sound of you breathing produces the same. That's extremely unpleeasant to the ears especially when using a headhone. Please investigate it, remedy it etc.
