The reason Romeo only has 1 shot in the sniper @ 29:35 is because during the cutscene, he shot at the Banshees. It’s a little attention to detail that I didn’t know until recently

Fun fact Halo 3 ODST should really be called Halo 2.5 ODST as it starts in Halo 2 in the middle of the Brutes betraying the Elites and ends at the beginning of Halo 3. This is why you see dead elites and talk about how only 1 covenant cruiser got through but at the end see more cruisers as Truths forces have arrived and are excavating the arc.
To give more context the CCTV is actually the cities AI called the Superintendent which is tracking and helping the ODSTs giving them info and helping them link up. A few hours after drop so when the rookie is linking up with the rest of the team the floating alien (Engineer) has actually linked itself with the Superintendent gaining its knowledge to save as many people as it can from the Brutes as the engineers are treated as slaves and don't really want to help the Covenant.
If anyone has any questions please let me know.

This has probably been said a few times already in the comments but the Rookie's motif consisting of 3 descending notes is meant by the composer to convey "All Alone" or lined up with the notes, "All A-lone".
Marty O Donnell, one of the composers for the series explained he wanted the Rookie's music to reflect the feeling of being all alone in a dark rainy city as you search for answers after waking up. It's meant to feel intimate and not necessarily sad but almost melancholy.
ODST's music and specifically the Rookie's music is beloved by the community, it's so unique to this game but fits perfectly into the series even though it's unlike anything before it. It's masterful.

One thing that really elevates ODST’s story is it’s connection to Dante’s inferno.
ODST’s are nicknamed hell divers and each level reflects a level of hell in Dante’s inferno, with the main area you wonder around being limbo.
It really comes together as you explore and listen to the audio logs throughout the map and hell is referenced throughout the story numerous times. Really subtle and cool story telling.

@ 25:46 to answer your question about the route the game is played. Yes you play as The Rookie in the New Mombasa street missions at night, Noir detective style figuring out what happened to his team, and you play the flashbacks of the characters as you discover them until they synch up. You tend not to fight super difficult enemies in the rookie missions, you're meant to play it as stealthy as you can, but you'll run into brutes, grunts, jackals, engineers, and hunters.

ODST is definitely one of my favorite titles in the entire series, tied with Halo: Reach. I am a little late so I am sure this might have already been covered. But for the story, this takes place during the events of Halo 2, when Truth's carrier jumped into slip-space inside the city limits of New Mombasa. Actually, if you look closely during the "cutscene" when you are dropping to the planet in your pod, you can see the UNSC ship that the Chief was on closely following the Covenant ship through the slip-space portal.
The main story is centered around the Rookie, who wakes up 6 hours after touching down. Split form his team and with no way to contact them, he must follow clues, seemingly being guided by some sort of super-intelligence in the city's systems, to piece together what happened and find his team. The "missions" as the Rookie are more open world like and let you loosely travel around the city at night and are more stealth centered and rely on the player using the newly implemented VISIR system (what looks like night-vision).
Once you find your clue as the Rookie, it cuts to a Flashback that is played out by one of the other squad members...and play out as your more typical liner levels. These missions tell the story of what has been happening in the 6 hours the Rookie was unconscious in his pod. These missions usually end showing how the "clue" the Rookie finds ended up where it did. Then, when those missions are over, you jump back to the Rookie to continue to look for more clues.
There's a bit more to it, like a secondary sub-story the player can learn about while collecting audio logs during the moments when you are playing as the Rookie. Not only do they tell another story going on in the background, but they actually change up one of the later missions with the Rookie slightly depending on if you found all the logs or not. But I won't spoil that.
Gameplay wise, it plays very similar to Halo 3. The main difference is you aren't a Spartan with overshields and all that. You're an ODST. To make you feel a little more vulnerable, they ditched the overshield system and brought back the health pack system that was in Halo 1. There is something similar with the Stamina system. If you take a lot of damage, you're Stamina drops, making you even more vulnerable and suspectable to damage. If you take cover and wait a little, your Stamina will recover, but you will still need to find a health pack to restore your overall health. They also removed the dual-wielding feature from Halo 3 so you cannot carry to smaller weapons (like 2 pistols or SMGs) at the same time, like you could in 3 as the Chief. Then there is the new VISIR system that the ODSTs use. This not only acts as a sort of night vision in low light, but it highlights enemies red, allies green (if I recall) and weapons/grenade/health packs/vehicles in a blue helping you better see them in dark portions of the gameplay.

18:06 fun fact: if a space elevator breaks, the centrifugal force from the planets rotation that keeps it up there, would send it flying off into space.
    (As seen at 18:06 )
And it be most practical to build a space elevator near, if not on the equator (and preferably in a spot that doesn’t experience any strong storms)
But if it were to collapse, it’s so long that it would wrap around the earth about 4 times.

My favourite part of this game is who they cast, not just Nathan Fillion, but also Adam Baldwin and Alan Tudyk. They went after the cast of Firefly for these 3 and had Nolan North as Romeo. They wanted the chemistry of Alpha Nine to shine throw with no back story. So there's that little added layer of Romeo being the odd one out, everyone but him gets along. Nolan North is an outsider to the trio in the voice acting booth, it was a perfect way of using that to their advantage.

It wasn't shown, but during the beginning with Buck's first playthrough, that part where you meet the first marines and he had that brute shot? Ahead is a bridge area full of dead elites/brutes, Buck comments on this like what's going on? and Dare hides it from him, because it is kept under wraps about how the Covenant is having a fall out between the two races. Also before that IMMEDIATELY when you meet those marines, entering the building to the left and going through the hall ways, his first question is something like "what's up with these dead elites?" once again he is dodged by Dare. ODST has and always be my favorite with reach. ODST had hidden lore and secrets within the city that you can actually solve and find out about if you looked around, mang as a classic screenshot there is even a "remember reach" graffiti near a dead marine as you explore the city as the rookie. Love the game to bits and pieces.

Halo 3 ODST was another one of those games that was planned to be DLC but was released as its own full game and I believe wasn't even full price upon release, plus it came with the Halo 3 Mythic map pack on a 2nd CD that was all originally DLC accessable via Xbox Live, for people who were less fortunate to not be able to get the map pack when Halo 3 released. Which made this game a very special acquisition for people's collection of the Bungie Halo games. Despite ODST taking place at the end of the Halo 2 mission New Mombossa it felt like fitting together that last piece of the puzzle in a collectors sense.

  • @RazgrizKnight
    @RazgrizKnight 6 месяцев назад

Rookie is the primary campaign of ODST (so yes there's combat, and a LOT of it, because it's a lot of trying to find your way around.). Buck, Mickey, Dutch and the gang, they are flash-backs to the team's progression into New Mombasa and their objective with their intelligence officer. You had it correct the first time in the very beginning of the show. Rookie got left behind as they thought he was dead and his pod wasn't accessible for confirmation (whether it's because it's in the air held by wires or because they physically couldn't find him isn't really explained.)
So while Buck and the crew work towards one objective, the Rookie's objective is simply to "survive and escape" or "regroup with your team". It's an extremely gloomy projection, as the Rookie's side of the campaign makes it really feel like your team is on the verge of being killed off, while the team's side of the campaign instills hope and aggression on their advancing towards their goal with increasingly difficult odds (something Spartans don't really show off with their super-human abilities. The fragile teamwork and dire straits that the ODST must face when they don't have those insane augmentations the Spartans get...)

ODST has such a special place in my heart because I’ve always liked playing as the sort of rank-and-file grunts in games, being the Chief or Noble 6 was cool, but stepping into the shoes of some ODSTs and being a little more fragile but no less capable was so cool, also it wasn’t shown in these cutscenes but to add on to that noire feel, there was actually a secret side story that The Rookie can piece together as you explore the streets between missions, so you could go around the city and find storage caches of weapons and audio logs that piece together the story of police corruption and if you found them all it had an actual effect on the mission where you’re going through the sub levels to meet with Dare which was so cool to me. This is also probably one of my favorite games from a cinematic and musical standpoint, the various camera movements and even perspective as well as the more Jazzy tones really helped separate this game from the rock ballads and bombastic nature of the other games which was a nice change of pace for what is essentially a DLC
So glad you finally got to experience it and honestly it would be cool to see you play a little of the game and get some live reactions to the feel of it!

ODST is the peak of Halo storytelling. This video did a decent job of grabbing some of the important bits, but honestly there's so many details during the gameplay segments that add to the narrative that it's hard to get everything. There's also a series of audio logs that tell yet another story that ties in with the main story and changes how part of that Rookie mission plays out, which also gives a lot more context to the "CCTV" segments. I would love to see you do a Let's Play series for this game.

Another game series that does quite a lot of these universe growing elements is the mass effect series. The amount stories that you can find spread throughout is *usually* done very well. Some very clever people out there to make it all work.

Yeah. You play as the Rookie in the present sections where you have to track down leads on where your squad is and each one you find leads to the next flashback mission where you play as one of the squad members. What the quick clips of gameplay don't show off is that Vergil (the Huragok who merged with the city's custodian AI) is flashing traffic guidance signals, street lights, automated alarms, and train ticket machines to try and guide you towards them as well as towards terminals which tell you about a side story about Sadie, a local who's trying to find her father and escape after the Covenant invasion.
The really cool thing is, if you find every terminal with Sadie's Story on it, the mission where the Rookie reunites with Dare changes slightly. Instead of the NMPD officer getting killed offscreen by Drones, he follows you down a level, unlocks a side door with Sadie's dead dad inside it and then tries to kill you after you see him. And instead of the Rookie aiming at Vergil and Dare stopping him, it's the other way around with Rookie stepping in front of Dare and whistling a tune Vergil taught him.

  • @Vonmoonlight
    @Vonmoonlight 6 месяцев назад

There is an underlying story about that "cop".
If you notice all the CCTV scenes, on the top right, you will see an expression icon.
That is Vergil. The cop kept calling out to, Vergil is the city AI.
The city AI throughout the game guides the Rookie by piecing all the information and used whatever available TV or screen the AI has access to, by making arrow signs, to the covenant it just street signs, but to the Rookie, its the AI assisting. By securing the Rookie safety and guiding him, he leads him to Dare, an ONI member who has a very important mission. So it all ties in
If i rmb correctly, so the corrupt cop, is under a corrupt commissioner, has some beef with the designer of the city AI, i forgot what it was about internally in detail, but i believe the man who designed the AI died, betrayed by the corrupt commissioner. The daughter was trying to make her way to find her father, the one who made the AI.
The corrupt cop wasnt allowed access since the AI who has access to everything knows that cop is corrupted and linked to the commissioner. Thus when the Rookie arrived, you hear the comms of the cop not allowed entry. While the AI, Vergil allowed Rookie access...
The cop wasn't aware that the AI is aware he is corrupt, hence when Rookie met the cop, Vergil then said "Hitchhikers could be escaped convicts", hinting and warning Rookie in a way saying that while he is guiding Rookie to Dare.
The corrupt cop(convict) escaped from the Covenant is hitchhiking on Rookie's journey to Dare.
There is a fork at storytelling path here. The way you saw here, the cop dies to the drones horribly since the cop offered to let Rookie go first to face danger
But Vergil knew the drones were coming, the moment Rookie went through the tube, Vergil shut the door on the cop, leaving the cop to his demise.
Now alternative storytelling, Rookie finds all the audio log and pieces everything together. So the timing that Dare and Rookie gets their stuff faster, so it be way earlier. So when the story aligns, Vergil has no way to eliminate the cop, as opposed to the original where Vergil matched the drone timing on the cop.
So at that point where cop should've died cuz the door was shut. Vergil didn't shut it off and risk danger to Rookie and itself.
So at that stage, the cop would follow the Rookie further, later leading the Rookie to a section that strays from the main path, accessing a supposed locked door. There you will see the man who designed the AI is murdered brutally with the other cops/soldiers survivor groups due to the covenant flooding the internal sections of ONI base.
The cop then confirms his mission is complete and wants to grab sth if im not wrong and here, this is where the Rookie should've pieced the information from all the audio log that the cop isn't as simple as it is and the cop knew that the Rookie was suspicious of him.
The cop then turns on the Rookie and tries to silence Rookie.
Here, in gameplay, your ally cop becomes an enemy cop, your crosshair becomes red, and the cop shoots back at you to kill you. The Rookie would then kill the cop then proceed to continue towards Dare and Vergil
Then later, you will then learn from Dare, the Engineer tapped into the city systems and took Vergil AI into itself, its data, AI personality etc.
The reason why Vergil is important that later was assimilated into the Engineer, both Vergil and Engineer knows something, a key information of what the Covenant is looking for on Earth and why specifically, New Mobasa of Africa.
Which was the throwback to the original mission during Halo 2, when Chief was briefed by Miranda to capture Prophet of Regret when they arrived in the city, to learn why the Covenant capital ship came to Earth, why specifically land on New Mombasa out of everywhere else on Earth
Which later you learn in Halo 3, thats where the location of the portal to the Ark was..
Halo 2 ending revealed about system standby for the Ark to remote activate all of the Halo rings.
Halo 2 mid story. You learnt that the Covenant knew of the portal on "Eden" but never knew "Eden" referred to Earth, and that Earth is the original and last homeworld of Humanity. Hence Regret didn't expect and was only with a scout group, who advanced early to Earth only to face the fight that Halo 2 premise started on. And he tried to bail out and inform the rest of the Covenant, and the betrayal of the elites were already planned. And thats how it all links together with every little bits of info and storytelling left and right

The red tinge is this game's equivalent of shields, called stamina, because you aren't playing as a Spartan or Elite, so you don't have shields. It basically works like shields and health but with slight differences where taking a hit at full stamina barely affects your health even from a heavy hit, but as your stamina drains even small hits start to hurt. Health doesn't regenerate without a health kit but stamina comes back after a few seconds. Super heavy hits like large explosions or sniper headshots can still 1 shot you especially on higher difficulties.

ODST’s soundtrack is utterly amazing. It’s an awesome mix of electronic and jazz thrown in together. Gameplay is changed too cuz you don’t have Shields, vision isn’t Spartan quality, and weapon accuracy isn’t what you’re used to. You’re purely human. Only enhancements you get are your armor and weapons.
Also a bit of context. ODST has two stories running together. 3 kinda. You have the main story of the Rookie reuniting his team slowly through detective work and you have a mystery story tying to audiologs you can find that change one mission permanently once all collected. Optionally there are easter eggs/foreshadow moments of the Covenant Civil War from H2. There are bodies of Sangheili in various spots that trigger dialogue between Buck and Dare.

Side-comment: Yes. Between each mission you play as the Rookie running/exploring New Mombasa getting to each mission. In-between each mission there are audio logs to grab, weapon caches to unlock, and little areas to uncover that are just fun moments.

ODST is such a brilliant game to play through, for something that was only made to fulfil Bungie's contract, same with Reach. they wanted to stop after 3 but then made 2 more bangers just to satisfy Microsoft. another thing i love about ODST in particular is that most of the cast were co-stars on Firefly, Nathan Fillion playing Buck/Mal, Alan Tudyk playing Mickey/Wash and Adam Baldwin playing Dutch/Cobb.

Fun fact about Gunnery Sergeant Buck is that he was present on Reach when the Covenant invaded the planet. You can spot him donning an AV-14 Hornet in the mission where we have to evacuate New Alexandria. If you listen closely Dare also states at 1:00:35-1:00:50 that "If you made it out of there(Reach). You can do it here as well". Very interesting detail none the less

New Mombasa acts as a hub world. In between each mission you play as rookie. You go and discover different objects which activate cutscenes and their subsequent missions. Eventually the objects you find out you into missions where you play as the rookie to complete the story with the rest of your squad.

i think there is a very good contrast between the sections where you play as the rookie and the other ODSTs, as the rookie they very intentionally keep the stronger enemies and the strongest weapons out of your hands. i think the strongest enemy you fight is maybe a pair of hunters, and thats only one time. it really drives home that sort of "alone and afraid" kind of vibe the game is going for.

Apologies if any of this has been mentioned to death already, I'm typing this up as I watch. Honestly, love this game to pieces. Wasn't the first Halo I ever played (that was Halo 2 at my friend's after school), but this was the first I bought for myself once I finally got my hands on a 360. And it shall forever have a special niche in my heart
4:50 - Not at that point yet, but indeed in Halo 5, as you said. Honestly, he was one of the highlights of the campaign for me.
5:30 - One of the little details I like from this part of the cutscene is that we can see In Amber Clad, the frigate from Halo 2, flying up next to the carrier.
    10:40 - Lore-wise, no. Gameplay-wise, yes.
11:42 - "Honestly, if he were any better, he'd be a Spartan."
13:15 - Nope, they're just adorable space jellyfish who want to fix things. Somewhat ironic that the first human killed by the Covenant died at the tentacles of a Huragok.
    24:20 - I'd watch it.
25:50 - Yes, you do fight more enemies between the flashbacks. Or you can try to sneak around them as you work your way to the next objective.
26:50 - Prime example of one of the little things I enjoy with this game. In the upper right corner whenever we have a CCTV camera shot is a little face representing The Superintendant, New Mombasa's municipal AI. And it will change in reaction to the events being shown. Like here, it goes from wide-eyed surprise to eyebrow-raising perplexed to just straight up pissed off.
29:45 - Three shots were fired in the cutscene, leaving just one left in the gun. Player providing this footage just never bothered to reload earlier, I guess.
35:34 - The casual way Buck just tosses that always amused me for some reason.
39:35 - Yup. The only Elites to be found in the campaign are all dead. The Great Schism hasn't officially begun yet, but Truth decided to get an early start on Earth for some reason or other.
    40:20 - Best skull.
46:35 - On a mission from the corrupt police boss to make sure someone is dead. If the player finds all of the audio logs scattered around the open world part of the game, the cop survives this bit and accompanies you further to where the final audio log is, the area just before Dare gets back on the radio.
1:00:15 - Sounds like one of the Vidmaster challenges. Either that specific level or the last level of Halo 3.

One thing that doesn't come across much in the cutscenes that really shows up during the gameplay is the city is run by an AI which is actively trying to guide the player by repurposing semi-relevant voice lines from other purposes, like traffic signs and hazard warnings being used to tell you about enemies up ahead. This is especially helpful during the Rookie segments which happen on many of the same maps that the other characters traverse, but at night, where the differences between this and mainline Halo games is most apparent. This is a stealth game where you can completely bypass many if not most of the enemies by simply choosing a path that doesn't let them see you. Really ups the horror and paranoia of the game especially as this is all happening at night with the main battle having ended hours ago. The Rookie is desperately searching through the wreckage of the battle finding bits and pieces left by his teammates fighting there before him and trying not to get noticed. Most of the Rookie segments are fought solo while the others fight alongside each-other and marines. It's also a semi-open world for the Rookie where it is actually possible to find some clues and thus their attached missions out of order.

Thr ODSTs don't have overshields so any shot that hits them actually hurts them. The increasing red around the screen when you're getting shot at is to represent your dtamina running out from dodging the fire, and once your stamina runs out, you can no longer avoid the fire and start getting hit. It's a very intereting way of still having a halo "energy shield" mechanic without changing to so much thay players don't like it.

7:05 I guarantee that's how most inverted players origin story began, that or an Flight sim game like Ace Combat.
Rookie's story is more Ambiance and world building with minor small conflicts (As it takes place after the battle has died down a little and you face patrols)
The Flash back segments are intro'd and Ended with cinematics and play much like classic Halo, tho rather an Augmented Spartan, you're a trained Elite. And yes, no Shield...just the health bar.
1:00:00 Halo 3 Vidmaster challenge for the Recon set, the OG Bungie Dev armor AFTER they used the Flaming Skull Helmets to differentiate players from devs, WHO ACTUALLY LOVED PLAYING THEIR OWN GAME.
"Before 343 Industries gave the armor to everyone, the only way to unlock Recon Armor in Halo 3, aside from being gifted it by Bungie, was to complete all 7 of the Vidmaster Challenges in Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST"

The odsts are actually better than the normal marines, think of Odsts as Navy seals to a normal marine today, also the Odsts don't have over shield, instead once you run out of stamina, you'll start losing health, which you'll only be able to replenish with a health pack like in Reach. Also there is an Easter egg in one of parts when you're playing as Rookie, that says "Remember Reach" on a wall

Sorry for the paragraphs here Kai but I figure you might appreciate this take
ODST was awesome- it was like a perfect conduit from halo 3 to Reach. It was an honest Halo 3 DLC/Campaign addition 👌👌
Then reach came along brand spankin new; it had a very similar feeling campaign, but much more tragic- unlike all other Halo titles. The cinematics, the character interaction, so much hope and excitement- but much more heavy due to the inevitable loss that was slowly growing with each mission. Reaches trailers and gameplay previews pre-release were very- unclear. Almost as if Bungie made us think it was a story where you would win.
Then the live action trailer 'Deliver Hope' dropped. When I saw that on TV I really saw reach for what it was- and the ad campaign always said "Reach Falls: September 14" which was when it released, and in the game thats the day you play as Noble 6 for the last time
The fact that you see Buck in one of Reach's missions was the cherry on top. Especially considering you were in a city just like in H3 ODST's Campaign- same circumstance but much worse seeing as reach was clearly losing that war. I just really love how connected they all are- as much as bungie could make them

    So for context...
First off, ODSTs are not super soldiers, as they are not augmented themselves but they do have a superior armor not quite as good as Spartans but better than Marines with stuff that helps them survive more stuff...
And answering to your question, as the Rookie you navigate through the city at night, and you see a city already over sieged by the Covenant, you can take side streets or empty alleys to save on ammo or fight your way through, you find enemies out guard even sleeping at some points, but its certainly quite the atmosphere, also you dont have yo find the clues of the team in order, the map is openworld sort of, but the hud gives you the correct order to do so chronologically...
Edit: also about that sus cop and the audio logs, if you manage to find all of them you get garages with equipment and even vehicles as aid for your next playthrough, but also you unlock a variation at the end where the cop jumps with you to find the final log and then attack you... but i dont want to spoil the story further..
