chief talks alot in halo legends because halo legends was based off a book, halo evolutions, and obviously it's hard to convey silent communication via book consistantly
I know it's a little late (it would've been awesome to release this closer to the Fallout TV series coming out), but I would love it if you could react to all of the Fallout trailers/intro movies
I love seeing you out and about in youtube comments. While I have you, I just want to thank you for everything you did for Halo and my childhood. The joy, excitement, dread, and tears your music has made me feel is unforgettable. Thank you.
Marty, you are an absolute legend. Thank you for everything you did to give us the Halo franchise. We will pass the torch to the next generation to give them the same unmatched experience you gave us.
@Themartyodonnell I hope you don't mind me saying but thank you for the great journey that is Halo. I grew up on the Xbox and Halo CE and it played a great part of my childhood and furthermore to my choice of career as an adult.
7:13 has an interesting undercooked detail, when the gurney passes through the group, Chief and Miranda don’t even acknowledge it, but the Arbiter, so used to his Elites dying in combat for honor, never considering the humans he once slaughtered, watched the whole was as the wounded marine is carted by.
later on in 5: spoiler warning i guess if anyones worried about spoilers for an almost 10 year old game - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -it’s later shown in 5 that his camp has medic tents and doctors, with some elites discussing how it goes against their culture and stuff. it’s pretty cool to see, and is a nice callback to that moment also it’s shown he allows female sangheili into his ranks, possibly from fighting alongside miranda keyes and other human women
@@KingBossBob this retroactive lore addition that a sophisticated species that conquered the stars just disregarded medical care throughout its history is so ridiculous
@@blueshit199 5 was the first blatant mention in the games but sangheili views on medical care were made clear in the 2008 book “The Cole Protocol” and implied in 3 also they were a warrior culture that had a millennia of religious brainwashing, having backwards beliefs is pretty understandable
@@KingBossBob we are a warrior culture with millennia of religious brainwashing, and we have medical care. you'd think mending wounds would go hand in hand with warfare. at least have it be something the females did traditionally, or the prophets. even Yautja are trained in field first aid
In the beginning, Chief was incredibly wary of seeing the Arbiter appear out of active camouflage behind the Marines because, before he crash landed back on Earth, he had spent weeks aboard the Prophet of Truth’s ship at the end of Halo 2 as it traveled to Earth. In that time he was in complete mission and survival mode, causing trouble for the Covenant forces aboard, and even coming close to assassinating Truth before he was stopped by a Jackal Sniper (the true menaces). Even as the ship reached Earth, it remained in orbit for a while longer while the planet was battling before we see it enter the atmosphere. It’s a much larger ship than you’d realize so Chief had to play cat n mouse dealing with the outnumbering Covenant. So there’s some context as to why Chief was really not having it when he saw an Elite approach, unbeknownst to him that they’re at a truce.
"But let us never forget those who journeyed into the howling dark, and did not return." That one always brings tears to my eyes, I played Halo with lots of loved ones who are no longer here. What a masterpiece of a series Bungie made, I'm grateful I was around for it
One very cool note about the funeral at the end: Spartans weren't ever officially listed as KIA because the UNSC feared people would lose hope if they knew Spartans could be killed. So all Spartans were listed as MIA, chief getting his number marked on the memorial is a nice way of giving closure to all the other Spartans that died in the war. He was allowed to be officially laid to rest. Which is ironic considering he really was MIA.
Cortana's line at the end of "It's been an honour serving with you John" always gets me misty eyed. It's only ever been "Chief" to that point or "Spartan" when she was trying to be extra motivating.
The music of this game... No score or music evokes emotions like Halo 3. It encapsulates my entire childhood, as well as the absolute masterpiece this game is.
The trilogy ends how it began. Chief exits a chryo pod in Halo at the beginning and chief enters one in Halo 3 at the end. Truly a work of art. Love watching your reactions to this series. Another great series of cutscenes to watch is Gears of War.
“‘Halo, it’s finished.’ ‘No, I think we’re just getting started’’ “‘Truth and the covenant, the flood. It’s finished.’ ‘It’s finished.’” I love the full circle
Halo 3 has couple of my all time favourite video game moments; Lord Hood's speech at the end is, IMO, still incredible even thought it is fairly simple. "They ennobled all of us, and they shall not be forgotten." Chills, even as I type it now. And an utterly heartwarming call back -moment, when Cortana says "Keep your head down. There's two of us in here now, remember?" She says that in Combat Evolved when/if you take health damage the first time on Pillar of Autumn. When I heard that way back when, playing Halo 3 the first time, I had to take a moment to gather myself after that.
Lord Hood was never much for complicating speeches. He's the type to get to the point, and it's more powerful than if he had just kept on talking. Less is more for him, and it works
Halo 3 is the only time (except Halo 5) where all players in co-op are canon. Player 1 is Master Chief, Player 2 is Thel Vadame (Arbiter), Player 3 is N'tho 'Sraom (SpecOps), and Player 4 is Usze 'Taham (Ascetic). The only quirk is that each of the elites were sometimes canonically elsewhere for parts of missions. Like Arbiter is obviously there in Mission 1 when he points out the Brute capturing Johnson, but he's obviously canonically at the second tower on the Ark while Chief is at the first before they meet up to take the third.
There was actually a recent book that explored them deeper but I can’t remember. I’ve gone back and started reading some of the recent novels actually though. Even if 343 is flubbing up the narrative, at least good writers are still being given access to the canon in other media.
To be fair, the dialogue of that mission does change if you have two players. Becoming just "The Elites" instead of "The Arbiter" Safe to assume that R'tas took control of the forces assaulting the barrier control if Thel is with the Chief.
I like how as the cutscenes progress deeper into the game, you see more use of paintings in the background, like they were running out of time or budget to get 3D artists to build the cutscene environment so they went for a quick and dirty painting instead
The story has potential to be on this level. Not the levels of H2 and H3. That’ll never happen. But something akin to that. However, until 343 and Microsoft clean up their management with development on the next Halo game… Infinite had great Chief moments but had so many other issues pertaining to it along with feeling very unfinished. Halo Wars 2 had a different feel of story telling due to being and RTS but it was still a great story introducing a new baddie. But the jump from Promethian and Mantle of Responsibility plot to then the Banished plot needed a lot of clarity and had many plot holes. 343 needs to incorporate more relatable stories to the Banished and large hint to Offensive Bias in the next game.
In Halo 3 you would play as Master Chief but split screen would have the other player as the Arbiter. If you played with 3 or 4 players they would play as other elites.
@@DivusMagus Late, but honestly the closest thing we have to a 'Halo Show' is red vs blue, I'd love an actual canon show though, just I feel like they're going the wrong way with the few movies and the show, halo just doesn't fit live action, 3D animation fits it so much better.
Honestly my favorite part is around 16:30 where Cheif is asked if he trusts Cortana enough to risk Earth, humanity's only home left, and he doesn't even hesitate to say "Yes sir".
Johnson was indeed a first generation super soldiers, part of the Orion Project that came before the Spartan Program. The Ark's true purpose is indeed the creation of Halo rings, and created 6 of the array of 7 we come to know of in Halo 2 and 3. The Ark (Installation 00) and the rings it birthed weren't the Forunners first attempts at galactic scale super weapons. The Forunners originally built a much larger Ark (called the Greater Ark) which built 12 Halo rings that we're much bigger than the ones that came later (30,000km compared to the 10,000km ones we see in the Bungie trilogy) The Forunners abandoned the array of 12 when flaws in the design became obvious and built the Lesser Ark and the array of 7 we see in first three Halo games. the Flood would destroy the Greater Ark and 11 of the 12 larger rings. the sole surviving member of the array of 12 would be rebuilt to match the design of the rings built by the Lesser Ark. Installation 07 (Zeta Halo), the same Halo ring that Halo Infinite takes place on
The Orion Project was sort of.. retroactively made part of the Spartan Project, so it very much is a case of "technically yes, but actually no." to Johnson being a Spartan 1.
One of the things I've always liked about the Halo cutscenes (until the remasters/anniversary editions) was that they're all in-engine. You won't find smoother transitions between gameplay and cutscenes than in the Halo francise.
I just love how many parallel lines are in the story, the arbiter's first line at the start saying "Were it so easy" as in, were it so easy to put the animosity he and chief have aside and work together, and one of his last lines to Hood being "were it so easy" when hood says it's hard to believe he's gone, saying Arbiter is having difficutly processing that chief could be dead, there is a lot of serious development between the two across 2 and 3 and I love to see that by the end of the series (mostly in 5) they are still brothers.
In Halo 3, you're always playing as Master Chief unless you're doing multiplayer. In multiplayer, player 2 is the Arbiter and player three and four are two new elites (they are named, but I don't remember them). It should also be noted that some cutscenes do actually change to reflect that the Arbiter is always with Chief throughout the game.
i think the reason this game looks so good, high level of cinematography, and elements of sci-fi films (painted backgrounds or foregrounds) is all due to an amazing sense of stylization. Everything fits its style and format to tell a true Halo story and experience.
Funny you mentioning at 12:30 that chief has very little dialogue after he says “Worse.” Because that in fact was the one and only word he speaks to the arbiter throughout the entirety of Halo 3. All those missions together, all that unspoken respect by the end of the game, all done with little to no conversational dialogue
Part of what made Halo so good and older videogames in general is that the most badass moments were saved for gameplay and not cutscenes. I think watching you play 3 would be awesome and you'd get a lot more out of it
Halo 3 is a masterclass in how, even despite the age of the textures and camera zooms, you can still have incredible storytelling using blocking, lighting, camera placement and voice acting. It really is inspiring
Loving the Obelisk the Tormentor shirt! In regards to saying that Halo 1-3 was the ultimate game trilogy. i can only think of one contender to the contrary and that's Mass Effect 1-3. one thing i loved about Halo 3's campaign, in Co-Op, every player (max 4) was a different character, P1 was Chief, P2 was Arbiter and P3 and P4 were two other elites who are also canon with names, N'tho Sroam and Uzhe Taham. also, your note in that one cutscene about the backdrop looking like a painting, it's because it was. it was one of at least a couple throughout the game and as a lover of Star Wars, i'm more than happy for it.
29:06 Player 1 is Master Chief and player 2 is The Arbiter. If you have 3 or 4 players then they add a red elite and a blue elite for you to play as, but it doesn’t add them into the cutscenes.
Man the fact that you didn't see the extra cinematic of chief going into stasis on the split back half of the ship unless you played the whole thing on the hardest difficulty was a heck of a challenge for younger me.
That's the normal ending, so you'll see it on any difficulty. The legendary ending is the final scene where you see the ship approaching the planet where 4 takes place.
@@steveh84 that's the normal ending in the MCC probably, since we know now halo 4 takes place. in the original the legendary ending was chief getting into stasis, since that's where bungie wanted to end the story
@@ItsFelix_ wrong. Going into stasis was the normal ending in Halo 3 on 360. You saw it on all endings after the credits, and it would have been the end of the story for most people as not many actually bother with Legendary campaign. But if you did you got the extra scene of the ship approaching the planet playing out shortly after the stasis scene.
1st player plays as chief for the entire game. 2nd player would play as arbiter, then 3 and 4 would play as 2 other named elites. Also, don't think you noticed the arbiter while Chief was fleeing high-charity. Arbiter shows up at the end of the mission, fighting flood, securing the pelican for Chiefs escape. It further cemented the twos comradery. Pretty sure the warthog at the end is how Johnson got there.
Chief was onboard a forerunner ship which was within the city of high charity - covenant home base - the ship spent weeks flying to earth which was on it's way to New Mombasa (halo 3 odst city) - a city on earth. after spending weeks causing havoc on the forerunner ship, he ditched in low orbit (Halo: Landfall which shows this part of the story and is insanely good cinematic for it's time). he re-joined with the marines and started a fight towards to dig sight where the forerunner ship landed, that ship then went to the ark - which is used to activate the Halo Array. thats the story of halo 3 side note. halo reach to end halo 3, took 3 months.
Most of the cinematics in this game always make me feel so emotional. Like the opening cutscene in Sierra 117, I always want to cry when the piano chords come in!!
17:31 Idk why but this shot always amazed me. 18:46 too, but u and Ik why I like this shot haha, 22:04, 22:17 too. 32:24 I could be reading far too into this but maybe its cause she (cortana) finally is in a moment in her life again where things r stable with him around. 37:09 seeing everything from cortanas perspective and the hand gesture of chief saying everything u need to know, everything she needs to know is awesome. 38:48 also when cheif blocks the ark with his siloutte is awesome too, like saying the only thing that matters is their friendship rather than watching the biggest firework show in the universe.
Halo 3 may be old now, but the lighting is just phenomenal so I'm glad you really examined that in this. I can never quite describe it, but in-between the old low poly tech for the time, the lighting - even in today's standards - are just incredible. It's grounded yet has style, it makes you slow down to see what its pointing at, it's not over-glamorized to force your attention, I could go on. Out of all the Halo's, 3 and ODST has the most artistic and accurate lighting in my opinion.
Was waiting for this! Halo 3 was the first Halo I played, and is what got me into the series. Still remember my dad buying it and playing it with me. Glad you enjoyed it!
16:50 One of my favourite things is that structure on the right side of the screen that the warthogs re driving towards... that's the Forward unto Dawn. That's a UNSC Frigate, inside the hangar bay of Rtas Vadum's Kerel pattern carrier, the Shadow of Intent, and it likely comfortably carried the rest of the human ships that were attending the battle of Installation 0 through the portal. The Forward unto dawn is a speck compared to the Shadow of Intent. Infinity is barely larger than the Shadow, and both of them could comfortably fit in the hangar bay of Long Night of Solace... twice. Edit: 17:59 That's a good shot, that's the Shadow of Intent with the remains of it's battle group, 8 Ket pattern Battlecruisers. 2, maybe 3 of those cruisers could fit in the hangar bay of the Shadow for refuel and re-arm, each of them are just over 3 times the size of the Dawn. Edit the second: 40:34 Clearly, Lord Admiral Terrence Hood, you do not, because first contact with the covenant, and what started the war, was an encounter with a Brute ship on Harvest, the Elites had nothing to do with first contact.
after 20 years since i started playing Halo CE. I still rewatch cutscenes or play campaigns from time to time. No other game or movie did such a big impact on my memory. The story, gameplay. music everything was perfect
At 30:00 when the halo light motif plays, it only plays when the rings themselves are in the cutscene within the mainline halo games (1,2,3). There is a video essay I watched about the music of halo and I highly recommend watching it "Halo's Music And Why We Love It | Video Essay" by Laper Larden
12:36 "What I love about Chief is that he's very dialogue but what he says is so powerful". It's a laconic way of speaking. Reminiscent of Laconia. You could even say he's spartan with his words.
I love these classic Halo games, but Halo 3 holds a special place for me since it was my first Halo game. My family didn't own an xbox until after it was released, so I never did play Halo 2 when all my friends were. That said, every so often I'll return to these first three games and watch their cutscenes ( the "game movies"), and every time I'm reminded just how *brilliant* they are. The characters, the story, the pacing... everything works so well. Then there's the music. Even to this day, what feels like a full lifetime after I first picked up that 360 controller and started playing Halo 3, the music brings me to tears. It's epic, sorrowful, impactful, gentle, and all the flavors in-between, right when it needs to be. Truly masterpieces in their own right. As such, the original Halo trilogy isn't merely a trilogy of masterpieces, but an orchestra of masterpieces, weaving a story through color, song, and voice, split into a trilogy. To everyone involved in these projects: Thank You.
Hey, I just want to let you know that this game has so many small little mini cutscenes in the actual missions that it just needs to be played honestly, Forward unto Dawn's arrival, fucking goosebumps every time This is the edit: About the artwork backgrounds, if they tried it in the game engine, it would never have looked as amazing as it does, one of those stylistic choices that I'm pretty sure everyone says thank fucking God they made it that way. Because the detail they packed into them like fleshing out forerunner structure details and even the hexplate of high charity and even that one shot of all the forerunner structures in just open plains. Fucking beautiful and also fleshes out what the these installations look like from halo 1.
From the bit before to the scenes after 13:50 is my favourite cutscene easily, I can just imagine it remastered like Halo 2 anniversary. The last one at 39:17 is also really good
One other bit i dont see mentioned here: Arbiter's line at the memorial to Lord Hood: "Were it so easy", is the first line he says in the game too, to Chief when he put a gun to his head.
I cant wait to watch this, I hope you had lots of fun with it!!! I also so you saw "Halo Legends" ironically my favorite ep was your least fav lol. I love the high action in it, it was animated by the people that made "Robotech the Shadow Chronicles" so they are good at making stuff look like Mechs. Robotech and Battletch are also my fav franchise, and it its cool to see they have both helped make Halo stuff. Battletech / Fasa was involved in the creation of Halo 3 while Robotech inspired some of the scenes in the games, including scenes with the Cov fleet. I have a couple lore answer, I will make them short. You asked if those goofy space bikes are canon, they are XD Its for Spartans only, because no one else would have the armor to fly them in space, they are expendable heavy weapons platforms. You asked what that Human capital ship was in "The Package" I dont remember the class name, but it is an ONI ship that used for deep recon and ship assassinations. It uses a different kind of cloak that is more similar to what we are experimenting with in real life, projected images and such. As for the Suit in "The Package" it was based on the Mk1 Spartan suit, it was supposed to be much more heavily armed, but it required a nuclear generator that wasnt miniaturized to power it. Two groups tried to make Power Armor, The MJOLNIR required super humans durable enough to handle the armors movement. The other group tried to make that armor safe for normal humans, Hrunting, named after beowulfs sword, they ended up basing after the Spartans "Mk 2" In the end, most of the things made from the "Hrunting" program have become full on Mechs, not power armor, because on fix for making them save for normal humans was to make it so the speed and reaction time of the mech was slow so the pilots limbs dont get ripped off. I guess they came to the conclusion it would be easier to just make Mechs. Also theirs crossover with those two programs because in the War with Cortana and the Banished, some Spartan IVs were using Gen 2 Spartan armor that was encased in special Hrunting style power armor, like form the Prototype episode. They used them for heavy assaults. Peace be with you and I love your Halo videos, I wish I could give you more, but the economy is just so bad, I dont even buy Halo stuff, DLC nor physical, just because how bad things are.
Hey! You didn't have to give a super chat but I hugely appreciate it. I'm so glad you're enjoying the content! Thank you for all the lore information too!
I've been waiting for this since your ODST reaction. More gameplay videos soon? Maybe a gaming channel? The ODST gameplay was so fun to watch. Hell, all Halo content is fun to watch. It's just that great of a series.
The ark is out of range of all active halo rings. Similarly, the halo ring at the ark is out of range of the galaxy, meaning lighting it normally, which was essentially the plan, would be a tactical pulse as spark said, with no effect on the rest of the galaxy
26:23 Something worth talking about is how the Flood aren't your usual zombies that mindlessly kill just because they're hungry. It's an intelligent hivemind capable of things like forming an alliance for a greater good that CHOOSES to try to consume the entire galaxy
So many cool Easter eggs in these cutscenes. Notice how the marines salute to Miranda, Johnson and Chief, but drop the salute when the Arbiter walks by because they dont respect him or see him as a part of their ranks.
Halo 3 stands to this day as one of _the_ best Halo games to date. The music score, the conclusion to the original trilogy, the finished fight, everything made it so legendary in 2007. The reunification between Chief and Cortana was a bittersweet one, and the cutscene combined with the music nearly brought me to tears. And even listening to the soundtrack by itself (on Spotify as well) still manages to bring chills and tears because you can just picture which cutscene the music is playing for. Bravo, Bungie and Marty. Bravo.
Like the other guy said there were multiple brutes, but i always looked at it like the Brute minor was told to hold him, but after seeing him get punched around by Johnson, Truth made the chieftain take over since the brute minor was doing an embarrassing job.
that's actually a bug that only has one fix. if you reload the previous areas load zone by travelling over the mountain and then coming back, that minor will be a chieftain as intended.
29:06 To answer your question, in Single Player, you play as the Chief, and the Arbiter has his own path as an AI. But in multiplayer, P1 is Chief, P2 the Arbiter, P3 & P4 are Elites named N'tho 'Sraom and Usze 'Taham. An interesting aspect as well, in Single Player, the Campaign works slightly differently, like the Arbiter has a set path, where he'll disappear and reappear in specific areas on different levels. As well as how on the mission; Floodgate, when the other Elites rock up to help, if on Single Player, alot of Elites come down to help, if on Multiplayer, very few appear. I love how they've done this, I kinda wish that all other Halo's had a similar aspect to the Coop side, instead of just having a clone of Chief. Like having P2,3,4 as ODST instead. Halo Reach you can design your own Spartan so that's a fair and pretty nicely done.
Halo wars 2 took place on the same ark from this game. Happens later in the timeline but it’s the same location. Few of the newer books mention it and even take place on it post halo 3. As of right now in the story, Atriox’s invading army is still on the ark. Trapped fighting Captain Cutter and the Spirit of Fire
I got chills rewatching the cutscenes multiple times while watching this. This video makes me want to replay the game once again. I can't wait for you to react to Halo 4. In my opinion, it has some of the most emotional scenes in the series. amazing work my friend. keep it up!
Halo is hands down the best trilogy in gaming. Everything comes full circle. My favorite thing about Halo is scale. You don’t realize how large Chief is, the elites, the ships, guilty spark, the ark all of it is just enormous. Just imagine if we got this as a final season of a live action Halo show. You down to be a showrunner and direct?
I think they used the matte painting towards the end not due to budget but maybe due to timing since Bungie was always in a time crunch. Also loved how it ended the way it started in Halo 1, that be the cyro pods. Great trilogy!
Fun fact: Sgt. Johnson's line in the very beginning in response to the Brutes having their scent changes based on the difficulty selected. Iirc the campaign was selected to be in Easy or Normal with line he said.
I got my start on RUclips and in video editing through Halo Cutscenes, so I arguably have an equal amount of nostalgia watching the cutscenes as I do for the series itself, and Halo 3 specifically.
Loving the react series! Halo always gives me chills. Some notes for you: When you noticed the scene right after the new ring reveal, where you said it looks old school like a painting, that's because it is a painting used there! It's very cool! When they say light the ring, they do mean activate it because they are currently on the ark outside the galaxy, so it won't affect the rest of the galaxy. Also, high charity, where you left cortana in 2, the covanents home base that got infested just landed, so that means the grave mind from halo 2 is here, and killing it with halo would be a huge blow, if not wipe out the flood for the most part. I do agree, halo is one of the best trilogies of all time!! If you haven't experienced it, mass effect is also an absolutely amazing trilogy
Fun fact about the High Charity mission cutscenes, those were actually painted scenes with the rest of the cutscene laid over them, and honestly the artwork is incredible, and it really evokes that otherworldly vibe from the flood in comparison to the rest of the game being done entirely in the game engine
Halo wars 2 takes place on the Ark. Chief was frozen for a little over 4 years I believe before Halo 4. As for contenteding trilogies I'd say Gears of war and Mass effect for myself. You should totally do gears next ;)
"Wake me when you need me". That goes way harder given the era of Halo at the time. It was confirmation that Chief wasn't just a machine, that he was human and that Cortana brought him to that realisation or at the very least let him accept that. Colours aren't my greatest point of cinema but storytelling, I'm pretty good at picking apart. Gravemind exists as long as a single spore floats
Reach and ODST are the only games where you don't play as chief; BUT in halo 3 specifically, the second player (if there is one) will play as arbiter and usually starts each mission with the covenant analogues to whatever UNSC weapon chief starts with. Even some cutscenes change very slightly, usually just moving arbiter slightly to share focus with chief instead of being more in the background.
The thing the covenant were opening was a artifact that they found (I believe on earth). The portal they open does take them to the ark I believe. It’s been so long sense I played this. 😂
for when you mentioned some of the zooms looking bad, i think those might be shots within the actual game. i know some of the sets (maybe all of them in this game) are in game sets that people can look around in if you detach the camera, and they have the characters moving around in them. but like at 5:36 you can press A, you can gain control of chief and the scene is still playing. you can kill the Chieftain before the cutscene is supposed to end. i dont remember if he dies in the scene, or if he dies right after the animation is over. i normally get a sniper rifle, and take him out before he can use his invincibility. the reticle doesnt show because technically its still a cutscene, but if you know where it is, you can take off his helmet and get a headshot while hese still pushing Johnson.
That one and the cutscene where the Shadow of Intent drops the elites during floodgate are the 2 cutscenes i know off the top of my head that you can exit and play while they are happening. I usually do it on floodgate because if you save the elites, the squad leader and arbiter will talk about High Charity being fully infected and that the ship that crashed on earth broke quarantine even though the fleet surrounding high charity was hundreds of ships.
In Halo 3, if you play Co-Op, you'll play as Chief (P1), Arbiter (P2), N'tho 'Sraom (P3) and Usze 'Taham (P4), the last two got entire stories written about them with backstory and all, and are both badasses in their own ways
Halo 3 is definitely my favorite of the trilogy and is tied as my top favorite alongside Reach. The story was so incredible and the shots were incredibly cool. The gameplay was amazing. Everything about 3 was so good. I agree games today just aren’t as good as they used to be. The early 2000s was the golden age of story driven games. The 2010s had some incredible story driven games but there was a definite change beginning at the time. Halo, Bioshock, Half Life, Fallout, and Portal are my favorite franchises. You notice they are all late 90s early 2000s games. The only post early 2000s franchise I like is the Wolfenstein reboot. And that game has amazing things. Good story, amazing graphics, amazing combat, decent cinematic.
Yes the Green Phantoms are always friendly in Halo 3. It was such a nice detail in this games campaign to tell you what side they're on based on the color of the phantom. Even in H5. There's a color difference between Friendly and Enemy phantoms, but it's not green in that game more red. Also Miranda's and ESPICALLY JOHNSON'S death really hits me everytime. Johnson was with Chief until the end and a F'''ing LIGHTBULB take him out. Not too long ago I was in a stream of someone playing H3 campaign for the first time ever and he and everyone in chat cried when Johnson died. It's easily a top 5 Saddest moments in gaming.
When I played this the first time I cried during the end I thought Chief was gone. Halo has been a big part of my life since the first game. It was the first game I got on the original Xbox the Christmas that it came out. I love this series so much.
If you don't have the time for playing through Halo 3 campaign, try the game "movies" out there, which gives you the cinematics plus the relevant storyline parts of the gameplay. I recommend searching for recent ones, as subtitles were via patch to those recently, and makes it easier to get dialog during gameplay
Something Id like to note (that I didn't fully notice till this video) but the first line arbiter says in this game in respect to chief and him killing each ither is "were it so easy' and his last line in respect to chief dieing is still "were it so easy" I'd always loved line but didn't realize it was his first line
Yk what usually I would debate between my favourite being Halo 2 or 3 and after playing and watching videos / cutscenes like this makes it a definite. Halo 3 is one of the best games out there

chief talks alot in halo legends because halo legends was based off a book, halo evolutions, and obviously it's hard to convey silent communication via book consistantly
I believe it was produced by high moon studios but the war for\fall of Cybertron games have great cutscenes that I think you'll love to watch
Idk If anyone has suggested it yet or if you've already reacted to it but you should react to the animated film "Halo: The Fall of Reach"
I know it's a little late (it would've been awesome to release this closer to the Fallout TV series coming out), but I would love it if you could react to all of the Fallout trailers/intro movies
Ya…Chief should never talk a lot
Nice. The voice cast for Halo 3 was one of the best ever.
The man, the myth, the legend.. Marty, thank you for what you did for Halo🫶🏼
We will pass the torch to the next generation to give them the same unmatched experience you gave us.
love your work marty!
@Themartyodonnell I hope you don't mind me saying but thank you for the great journey that is Halo. I grew up on the Xbox and Halo CE and it played a great part of my childhood and furthermore to my choice of career as an adult.
Sgt Major: “We’re not leaving him here”
Chief: “Yeah, you’re not”
Chief: “I’m getting you out of here”
Sgt Johnston: “No…no you’re not”
😢
I never even noticed that parallel and I have played through Halo 3 at least 3 dozen times.
I can't believe in all the years I've been playing Halo 3, I never noticed that.
"even in death your sergeant guides us home"
Arbiter: "Were it so easy [to kill me]"
Arbiter: "Were it so easy [to kill Chief]"
Damn it. Never caught that parallel. Why would you do this?
7:13 has an interesting undercooked detail, when the gurney passes through the group, Chief and Miranda don’t even acknowledge it, but the Arbiter, so used to his Elites dying in combat for honor, never considering the humans he once slaughtered, watched the whole was as the wounded marine is carted by.
later on in 5: spoiler warning i guess if anyones worried about spoilers for an almost 10 year old game

-it’s later shown in 5 that his camp has medic tents and doctors, with some elites discussing how it goes against their culture and stuff. it’s pretty cool to see, and is a nice callback to that moment
also it’s shown he allows female sangheili into his ranks, possibly from fighting alongside miranda keyes and other human women
He's seeing a side of the war he never did before. The Arbiter is such a good character, shame 343 won't use him. Although I blame Microsoft for that
@@KingBossBob this retroactive lore addition that a sophisticated species that conquered the stars just disregarded medical care throughout its history is so ridiculous
@@blueshit199 5 was the first blatant mention in the games but sangheili views on medical care were made clear in the 2008 book “The Cole Protocol” and implied in 3
also they were a warrior culture that had a millennia of religious brainwashing, having backwards beliefs is pretty understandable
I don’t think that’s in any of the mainline books… is that one of the comics, or is there a book I’m not aware of?
I believe this was part of a comicbook although I got my info from a video breakdown with the comic book pages featured
@@Seyomint thank you, I’ll have to take a look!
"But let us never forget those who journeyed into the howling dark, and did not return."
That one always brings tears to my eyes, I played Halo with lots of loved ones who are no longer here.
"Mate just fucked off while he was talking." 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cortana's line at the end of "It's been an honour serving with you John" always gets me misty eyed. It's only ever been "Chief" to that point or "Spartan" when she was trying to be extra motivating.
The music of this game...
No score or music evokes emotions like Halo 3.
It encapsulates my entire childhood, as well as the absolute masterpiece this game is.
I've always loved how that one marine is more surprised to see a spartan than an elite
The trilogy ends how it began. Chief exits a chryo pod in Halo at the beginning and chief enters one in Halo 3 at the end. Truly a work of art.
Love watching your reactions to this series. Another great series of cutscenes to watch is Gears of War.
“‘Halo, it’s finished.’ ‘No, I think we’re just getting started’’
“‘Truth and the covenant, the flood. It’s finished.’ ‘It’s finished.’”
I love the full circle
@@TenthSgtSnipes the dialogue and story design is just fantastic. The guys at Bungie really made some special
Not to mention Arbiter goes from having his rank stripped at the start of 2 to becoming the leader at the end of 3.
@@scottkh4470 havent really thought of it like that. Thats interesting, so many full circle story beats/plots
Bungie made a perfect trilogy
that little look Cortana gives after "wake me, when you need me" makes me cry even now. such amazing games. i miss this era of halo.
We all do
Halo 3 has couple of my all time favourite video game moments; Lord Hood's speech at the end is, IMO, still incredible even thought it is fairly simple.
Becoming just "The Elites" instead of "The Arbiter"
Safe to assume that R'tas took control of the forces assaulting the barrier control if Thel is with the Chief.
I like how as the cutscenes progress deeper into the game, you see more use of paintings in the background, like they were running out of time or budget to get 3D artists to build the cutscene environment so they went for a quick and dirty painting instead
God, I love Halo 3. Playing it with my brother when I was back in school was great. It's a shame Halo doesn't feel like this anymore.
Yeah, the blue combat in red assault elites were peak gameplay for halo imo. Specially on the ark level
@@liamgasser8062 yes and they spawn in the other pelican right after the cutscene finishes.
They are canon elites aswell they have their own lore
@@maxcj7where can I read about them??
@@TheInsaneatheist the book Hunters in the Dark.

That still frame was my Windows desktop background for many years.
Man, i forgot how even by cutscenes alone good Halo 3 is
If only they could make a movie or show half as good.
@@DivusMagus Late, but honestly the closest thing we have to a 'Halo Show' is red vs blue, I'd love an actual canon show though, just I feel like they're going the wrong way with the few movies and the show, halo just doesn't fit live action, 3D animation fits it so much better.
@@Kharn_the_Betrayer_18 agreed look at mario movie animation is just better
The Forunners originally built a much larger Ark (called the Greater Ark) which built 12 Halo rings that we're much bigger than the ones that came later (30,000km compared to the 10,000km ones we see in the Bungie trilogy)
The Forunners abandoned the array of 12 when flaws in the design became obvious and built the Lesser Ark and the array of 7 we see in first three Halo games. the Flood would destroy the Greater Ark and 11 of the 12 larger rings.
the sole surviving member of the array of 12 would be rebuilt to match the design of the rings built by the Lesser Ark.
Halo 3 deserve an Anniversary edition like visual upgrade.
As long as they don't ruin it like CE
2027?

@charlestillman6715 the one and only!!!
All those missions together, all that unspoken respect by the end of the game, all done with little to no conversational dialogue
bros don't need to talk to have fun xp
Part of what made Halo so good and older videogames in general is that the most badass moments were saved for gameplay and not cutscenes. I think watching you play 3 would be awesome and you'd get a lot more out of it
Halo 3 is a masterclass in how, even despite the age of the textures and camera zooms, you can still have incredible storytelling using blocking, lighting, camera placement and voice acting. It really is inspiring
My favorite cinematic moment isnt even in the cutscenes its when the forward unto dawn drops into the atmosphere and the music is perfect
First one that came to mind as well is Mass Effect Trilogy. Just perfect storytelling from both of these trilogies
Man this game was my childhood, I miss this era of gaming.
Their framing is so good, so many amazing scenes where they capture sense of scale. You can feel how massive these ships and architecture are.
Chief was onboard a forerunner ship which was within the city of high charity - covenant home base - the ship spent weeks flying to earth which was on it's way to New Mombasa (halo 3 odst city) - a city on earth. after spending weeks causing havoc on the forerunner ship, he ditched in low orbit (Halo: Landfall which shows this part of the story and is insanely good cinematic for it's time). he re-joined with the marines and started a fight towards to dig sight where the forerunner ship landed, that ship then went to the ark - which is used to activate the Halo Array.
thats the story of halo 3
side note. halo reach to end halo 3, took 3 months.
Most of the cinematics in this game always make me feel so emotional. Like the opening cutscene in Sierra 117, I always want to cry when the piano chords come in!!
32:16, when Cortana illuminates at the moment she realises Chief has freed her from the Gravemind…. Love that
17:31 Idk why but this shot always amazed me.
44:00 The triology ended the same way it began. Such an incredible story, game, and world.
Was waiting for this! Halo 3 was the first Halo I played, and is what got me into the series. Still remember my dad buying it and playing it with me. Glad you enjoyed it!
16:50
One of my favourite things is that structure on the right side of the screen that the warthogs re driving towards... that's the Forward unto Dawn.
Infinity is barely larger than the Shadow, and both of them could comfortably fit in the hangar bay of Long Night of Solace... twice.
Edit: 17:59
That's a good shot, that's the Shadow of Intent with the remains of it's battle group, 8 Ket pattern Battlecruisers. 2, maybe 3 of those cruisers could fit in the hangar bay of the Shadow for refuel and re-arm, each of them are just over 3 times the size of the Dawn.
Edit the second: 40:34
Clearly, Lord Admiral Terrence Hood, you do not, because first contact with the covenant, and what started the war, was an encounter with a Brute ship on Harvest, the Elites had nothing to do with first contact.
after 20 years since i started playing Halo CE.
There is a video essay I watched about the music of halo and I highly recommend watching it
"Halo's Music And Why We Love It | Video Essay" by Laper Larden
I have been WAITING FOR THIS!!!
So excited for this one
12:36 "What I love about Chief is that he's very dialogue but what he says is so powerful". It's a laconic way of speaking. Reminiscent of Laconia. You could even say he's spartan with his words.
"Were it so easy" is said twice in Halo 3! By the Abitor when he sticks a gun in his face, and once when he "Says goodbye" at the memorial.
Hey, I just want to let you know that this game has so many small little mini cutscenes in the actual missions that it just needs to be played honestly, Forward unto Dawn's arrival, fucking goosebumps every time
This is the edit: About the artwork backgrounds, if they tried it in the game engine, it would never have looked as amazing as it does, one of those stylistic choices that I'm pretty sure everyone says thank fucking God they made it that way.
Problem with a gaming channel is I don't play enough so you guys would be waiting for me a lot 🤔
The ark is out of range of all active halo rings. Similarly, the halo ring at the ark is out of range of the galaxy, meaning lighting it normally, which was essentially the plan, would be a tactical pulse as spark said, with no effect on the rest of the galaxy
“Send me out, with a bang” had me cryin in the club as a 7 year old back in the day. (As a 24 y/o now, I still tear up)🥲
26:23 Something worth talking about is how the Flood aren't your usual zombies that mindlessly kill just because they're hungry.
Bravo.
the shot at 38:49 gets me every time. So perfectly contrasts the chaos happening right before
Man I love your Obelisk shirt
23:40 One thing that has always bothered me, is how the Brute Minor gets promoted to Chieftain between the cuts.
there were multiple brutes so my headcanon is that he was being harrassed by several of them
@@vynsyxx Could be.

To answer your question, in Single Player, you play as the Chief, and the Arbiter has his own path as an AI.
That beginning cutscene with Cortana’s monologue always gives me chills
I got chills rewatching the cutscenes multiple times while watching this. This video makes me want to replay the game once again. I can't wait for you to react to Halo 4. In my opinion, it has some of the most emotional scenes in the series. amazing work my friend. keep it up!
The Halo trilogy is just so good. It's the best video game story, in my opinion. I tear up in those emotional moments in Halo 3 especially.
Have you done a mass effect reaction yet? That’s one of the best trilogies in my opinion
I think they used the matte painting towards the end not due to budget but maybe due to timing since Bungie was always in a time crunch.
Also loved how it ended the way it started in Halo 1, that be the cyro pods. Great trilogy!
I really hope you do Halo 4 cutscenes next, I think the story and cutscenes of Halo 4 is really good
Fun fact: Sgt.
Some notes for you:
When you noticed the scene right after the new ring reveal, where you said it looks old school like a painting, that's because it is a painting used there!
This trilogy remains my favorite of all time. Absolutely love it.
The cinematography when the new halo ring comes out the clouds from the ark is insane.
i love your commentary, so insightful! also you are totally right, we were definitely in the golden age back in the day. halo was special :,)
Chief is the physical manifestation of Marcus Aurelius' words, "Action is the only truth".
Words are meaningless.
Acta non verba
10:30 Whenever i see this cutscene i am immediately pulled back to the announcement trailer for Halo 3.
Yea your right the portal was a way to get to the ark
11:36 shout out to the two workers at the top left. They are damn ready to take truth out themselves
for when you mentioned some of the zooms looking bad, i think those might be shots within the actual game. i know some of the sets (maybe all of them in this game) are in game sets that people can look around in if you detach the camera, and they have the characters moving around in them. but like at 5:36 you can press A, you can gain control of chief and the scene is still playing. you can kill the Chieftain before the cutscene is supposed to end. i dont remember if he dies in the scene, or if he dies right after the animation is over. i normally get a sniper rifle, and take him out before he can use his invincibility. the reticle doesnt show because technically its still a cutscene, but if you know where it is, you can take off his helmet and get a headshot while hese still pushing Johnson.
@@goldenhedgehog9 oh true i forgot about that.
In Halo 3, if you play Co-Op, you'll play as Chief (P1), Arbiter (P2), N'tho 'Sraom (P3) and Usze 'Taham (P4), the last two got entire stories written about them with backstory and all, and are both badasses in their own ways
100% ultimate trilogy ever made.
This game was my childhood, thank you for reacting to this! ❤
In the campaign you always play as chief and in co op the second player plays as arbiter. The warthog chief drove was Johnsons warthog.
A soldier of few words.
Cortana “Chief. What if you miss?”
MC “I won't.”
You mentioned the backdrops. I forget if they were big in Halo: CE, but in 2 and 3 Halo was known for its matte backgrounds.
Something Id like to note (that I didn't fully notice till this video) but the first line arbiter says in this game in respect to chief and him killing each ither is "were it so easy' and his last line in respect to chief dieing is still "were it so easy" I'd always loved line but didn't realize it was his first line
Full circle narrative! Awesome right.
Yk what usually I would debate between my favourite being Halo 2 or 3 and after playing and watching videos / cutscenes like this makes it a definite. Halo 3 is one of the best games out there
