    Kansas has always been about super talented musicians, solid and beautiful song writing, with complex but tasteful arrangements. Very few bands perform at this level live, with this bigness of sound without backing tracks (not even a click track for tempo). For 50 years? Sure there have been changes in the lineup (I’ll bet your favorite sports team has a lot more lineup changes, but you still cheer them on). Theses guys still deliver excellence with passion on every recording or live show they do. It still makes me smile…well done guys!

    It was a superb concert last Saturday night in Tysons Corner, VA. I enjoyed hearing "A Glimpse of Home," a terrific track from the Monolith album. The concert ended with a trio of Leftoverture songs: "The Wall," "Miracles Out of Nowhere," and, of course, "Carry on Wayward Son." Well done.

    I got to see Kansas just before Steve Walsh retired. They were so awesome and I admit to crying once Song For America started. SFA was the very first song I had heard from them back in the 70's and I get emotional when I hear it. The only concert that I have cried at ...I'm not normally emotional. A very long story . . as short as I can make it. I started watching this video . . immediately I said, " Hey . . . that's not Phil." I read comments and didn't realize he was recovering from injury, but played from 1:15 on. I started on piano 2nd grade . . . was very good at it ( still am ) . . but moved to percussion ( drums ) in 7th grade . . . 1975. ( I was a natural . . it was "easy". ) Then came Kansas . . . and Phil. ( in all fairness . . . let's add Neil, Bonham & Co. ) Phil has been my drumming mentor since high school . . . still is . . . and he's 73 ! ( if you are a drummer . . . watch his rudiments ! ) The intricacy and precision of their music grabs me . . . always did. I'm an engineer in real life . . . but played in bar / cover bands until about 10 years ago. ( I'm 63. ) I went to see Kansas in Youngstown, OH 2 years ago. Outstanding ! You Go Phil ! Looking forward to Pittsburgh in December !

    Great concert „clip“ - thanks a lot!
    I quite like Eric‘s powerful playing, but I‘m sorry, he‘s not another Phil (and that‘s OK)!
    Phil has so many variations and at the right moment that extra punch that put his own signature on the songs that he has become a KANSAS trademark over the decades just like Kerry‘s complex compositions, Robby‘s violin and the voice of, well who…Steve of course!
    And that is in no way to belittle the outstanding contributions of Rich, Tom and the bassists! Far from it, it was THIS mix and in the end it was always:
    WE are Kansas, WE are a band!

      @@kaoscontrol777 he wasnt saying that Phil didnt play on this video. He was comparing the styles of Eric to Phil. As a pro dummer myself, his observation is spot on. Phil's beat accuracy is remarkable and plays 'jsut the right amount' to accent and drive the song. Eric tends to Overplay and (frankly) is slightly ahead of the beat often (especially during and following his riffs) .

    Saw Kansas 7 times in their classic lineup era 1976-1980 with Steve, Kerry, Robbie and rev. Dave Hope. They sound real good here with this lineup. I miss Kerry's guitar input. They were a really great classical/progressive rock band that could rock hard when they needed it in the classic years with 2 guitarists. Still sounding pretty damn good for a bunch of old men. Great band in the 70's. Once Livgren left the band went south. Walsh released a couple good songs but the thrill was gone. Saw them in 1994 and they opened with a new album which was pretty good but Walshs vocals were just about gone. He should have stopped then and just recorded with Livgren in the studio but he refused to quit. He adjusted his vocals to make it thru each song but it sounded like crap most of the time. When he allowed his voice rest, like in the studio, he was still great. All good things come to an end. Rich was always constantly a great guitarist. He had some good licks from time to time but Livgren was king. 1976 was about the best they ever did, although 1982 was pretty special too with Elefonte. I would politely walk away from these guys because they are NOT Kansas.

    • @chuckfriebe843
      @chuckfriebe843 8 месяцев назад +2

      You can pretty much replace the people that play the instruments, but replacing Walsh is a difficult task. Elefante was the only vocalist they’ve had that could even come close. This guy singing here has a modern instructed technique. Walsh was all natural and, of course, didn’t use auto tune. He was one of a kind.

    • @jzm6403
      @jzm6403 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@chuckfriebe843 When Elefonte came all original members were still with the band except Walsh. Walsh and Livgren had solo Albums that were pretty good and they guested on each other's tunes. Ronnie James Dio also was on Livgrens album. Great stuff. By Mid 80's Walsh was killing his live voice with too many shows. One show near by in the early 90's he was rested and the old Walsh. I guess that happens to many singers. Too many shows kills their voice. No question Walsh still had range but making it thru those high pitched numbers without varying his voice was no longer possible. I saw them twice in the 70's. Touring Point of no Return and Monolith. They were great both times.

      Originally they were a twin guitar AND double keyboard band, as needed, with the incredible Kerry Livgren switching back and forth. It was quite a site to see him seamlessly go back and forth, often in the same song! Not to mention his incredible compositions! I saw them last night and I think they did a great job, the electric violin also fills in a lot with a heavy sometimes guitar like sound.

      Also, he is Phil's chosen replacement. In 1993-1994, when he took a break, they had known drummers filling in, and they were competent but didn't sound like Kansas. Eric sounds like Kansas, because he became the drummer he is under Phil's watch. He knows Kansas music better than nearly any other drummer out there besides Phil. I believe he's been his tech for two decades now.

He was starting to lose his voice even before his first leave of absense.
