I like to decide how many of something I need and then get a storage box that fits that exact amount in. So for socks I decided 12 pairs was what I needed and so I have 12 alcoves for them.... I don’t buy any more until I throw old ones out.... kinda one in one out method. Same for T-shirt’s, jumpers etc. For Christmas decorations I decided how big a box I was prepared to store and then I just make sure that’s as many decorations I have. I find making an intentional decision about how much of something you need and then making the storage container a natural limiter for it. It also means if something is important to me I can decide to allocate lots of space to it, and so don’t need to feel bad about the amount of it I have as long as it fits in the space (for me it’s baking supplies!). Good job with the decluttering, I love how intentional you are about what you have, and that you still keep the things you love, rather than just following arbitrary standards of “how many we should have”
I have a studio flat & did the same re Xmas decs & 1 in 1 out with clothes. I really did not need 6 identical black t-shirts that i'd had for years either!
An ex once totally failed to notice my new, quite drastically different hairdo so i think some male brains would perceive those patently different boots just as black oblongs 🤷♀️😂
When I moved from UK to be in France with my boyfriend, that bed was our lifesaver in his studio apartment. I swear if our life would be Tetris, we would be winning all the time😂 Now we have our own house and it was nice to declutter even we have more space. It allowed us to think what is actually really useful.
The logistics/timing of selling the big stuff is going to be tricky! Good idea to start on the easier stuff now. Your kitty is so cute, so helpful, lol. I liked your conversation about downsizing the toys.
Love a good declutter! We recently moved to a bigger villa, but we definitely decluttered before we moved- and before every move. This time we sold/donated all our furniture and appliances, and about half of our other belongings. Keeping the simple life~ and our cat is definitely enjoying the space. I wish you guys the best! You can do it!
Hi, 😲, your cat helps you around the home. That is SOooo cuuuuute. I hear him holding conversations with you. He's in agreement with you 😄. Mine helps me walk around the house by running at break neck speed to get in front of me just to slow down to a crawl and I cant move anywhere lol. I am grateful for your channel. You are inspirational. Thank you.😄
i love the golden arch mirror! love a declutter before a move. like you say it’s frustrating wanting to get ahead on the declutter but also enjoy ur things/space while you have it. i’ve done like a predeclutter where i list everything i will get rid of a few days before the move but keep it in the rotation in the meantime! happy new year 🌟 x
I was just thinking about making a list and writing corresponding dates for when it’d make sense to sell, so that we aren’t left doing it all last minute. Thanks for the tip!
Oh wow 😲 this is bold. I have been trying to do the same, ik how stressful it is. Thankyou for this series, I have sombdy to look Upto now. Thanks for consistently motivating me, you are amazing 💕. Happy New Year, Happy Moving!
Ahh, good start. I have a stuffed-full black sock drawer that's been needing my attention. You're very right about going through things again to avoid regrets.....I had a major, over zealous clear-out one year and got rid of some sentimental/heirloom items that I still kick self myself about. Any hoo, blessings for the New Year- got my fingers, toes and eyeballs crossed for a better one for everyone 🤞😊😊
Oh man I’ve been there too! I always have to hold onto it for a couple days before clearing out just to avoid those regrets. Sorry about the heirlooms 😔
Hey! Have you thought about a vacuum bag for your extra pillows? Like a Plastik bag and you suck all the air out with a vacuumer? Super helpful for a small space!!
What about These? www.amazon.de/dp/B07W4C5W9D/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_7qz9FbJFJMGBG Why didn’t they work? Maybe there was a hole? My parents always use them for extra bedding or for travelling in the car. :)
P.S.: love your account and pls keep going!! You inspire with decluttering, designing and that’s ok when you have mental health issues (I have myself) ♥️
You can always list the larger appliances to sell now and just state that they can only/have to pick it up on a specific date. Good luck with the downsize! I’ve been through it several times and moving across the globe. Enjoy it as much as you can!
We'll be moving this year too. And it does stress me out... breathing but ya know. Life change. And so we just keep going! ;-) Thank you for this video. Truly needed it.
I need to start doing this for when we eventually move to a different house....whenever that will be. We have so much stuff we've accumulated in the last 13 years of living in our current house and I KNOW there is so much we don't use (I have 7 totes of clothes alone I need to go through and donate, some are from when I was super skinny and some are from old jobs that I won't ever wear again) I hope you, Jackson and Izzy had a good holiday season!!! (sorry I haven't been commenting on your videos, work just kinda exploded over the last few months since we talked d/t the holidays and we're starting to slow back down now)
Happy new year!!! 🎉 I truly love your vlogs ❤️👍🙏 they are so motivating and inspiring. Thank you so much ❤️ can't wait for your next vlogs but make sure you rest too X
I'm not moving but this is helping me want to declutter! This past year I didn't want to get rid of anything and make things more overwhelming, 2021 will be the year of only keeping what's needed
Since over 80% of what is donated to thrift stores ends up in landfills one suggestion would be leaving items on the curb and posting "free items at corner of such and such street ect" on Facebook, whenever I do this stuff is usually gone within a couple hours and someone who wanted it got it not the landfill
what a challenge to move to a studio apartment, but if it is prior to an overseas move, then it is actually good planning. However, where will you store all the designer stuff? Or will you buy only when needed for a project?
Yes it is before an overseas move so we were thinking that same thing! A great way to get everything in order before that move and a great opportunity to figure out what we want to move permanently . For the design stuff, the small decor is very specific to my personal style at this point, and wouldn’t be of much value for upcoming makeovers. I’ve been trying to use as much as I can in upcoming makeovers and past to clear the space. I will keep some for me, linen and duvets I have bought so that they transition to any home and we will take them to our next spot. But what I’ve come to realize right now is that it actually brings me too much stress to store a bunch for upcoming makeovers because I don’t really have space for it in the first place. 😭 And it also kills my back to haul all of that to Seoul so often. I will start to restructure how I execute makeovers so that it makes more sense logistically.
@@SpaceMakerMethod Yes, I have done three overseas moves; Oregon -> Japan -> Australia -> to Ohio. Stuff=stress. You can always buy what you need at the location. I can't believe hauling all the design items on the subway. Suitcase designer via a TAXI.
Do you plan on living there in the studio for more than 3 years? If not, can you just put some stuff in storage unit that way you can still keep them for when you move again.
One show that I’ve been watching recently is called the house detox. It deals with decluttering and re-organizing. It’s a korean show but it has English subtitles. If you’re interested, I could send you the link.
OMG I’d love to see! I think I’ve seen it on in the background of the nail shop but it never has subtitles. I would LOVE to watch! Can we get the link?
@@SpaceMakerMethod Here is the link- one word of caution, you have to deal with ratchet advertising on the same page, LOL. Unfortunately the show isn’t on a mainstream service like Viki or Netflix. dramacool.so/the-house-detox-episode-5.html
It’s the random accent switch “I’ve got a lot of hangers here” lmao. Great video as always. Question: have you ever gone through a declutter “addiction”? Kinda like where you get rid of too many things?
Of in the past, for sure! It’s one of the reasons I now hold on to donation bags for a few days. I want to make sure after the fact that it’s something I really want to get rid of and won’t regret. I’ve had times when I’ve regretted selling or getting rid of many... like early 20s sold everything so that all I owned would fit into 4 small tubs, kinda thing. It’s definitely a learning process and takes time. And more time to learn to shift our consumer behavior in the first place so that we aren’t over purchasing.
As you get older you know yourself better & what you'll make use of & what's pointless keeping. When I was in my 20's I'd keep stuff just in case. The reality is if I haven't worn or used it in a year I never will.
Regarding the boots.. my ideal when keeping shoes is thinking-do they make me look taller? Or do they make me look short? I am relatively short and choose more pointed-toe boots as it elongates the legs. Rounded toe boots generally terminate more abruptly with the roundness and can actually make someone look shorter (especially helpful if you're very tall and don't like to emphasize that trait). Again, only my 2 cents but something I go by, and may be helpful when going through shoes and thinking of your "ideal self".
Hi I noticed that you moved a few times in Korea, I’m currently debating whether I should purchase larger furniture items or not. How much do you spend on average in moving costs?
Oh man it depends, for a driver about 250,000 to move within Songdo... and furniture, honestly you can spend whatever you'd like these days on Coupang. They have great items available now!
Decluttering: I'm thinking back to the "Nightmare Teaching Stories" type video with the hoarder head teacher. "I needed to take pictures to document it so that if I go missing people know what piles to look under" lol
This has been a huge dilemma for me with clothes and serveware/dishes. I love to dress up and entertain. In 2021 - Will I ever wear this nice dress again? Will it still fit? Do I really need these wine glasses? Do I need this curling iron or all this makeup i haven’t used in a year? My rule used to be get rid if something after year if you don’t use, need or want it ? 😧
We will use them again I think, after everything calms down. You could always store them away for now and then once things return to normal, take them back out and see if you feel the same way?
I would love to downsize but we need a two bedroom so my bf’s daughter can have her own space when she stays. I’m also spoiled with a storage locker to store our camping gear in. 😂
I'm so excited to document this move for you guys! Turn on your notification bell to get a message of when videos post!
