    We did the hike August 2023. Your comments are ‘spot on’. An option we chose was to take the boat from Patterdale to Pooley Bridge. From Pooley Bridge we hiked to Shap. Laura, the hostess at The Beech House, Glen Ridding, where we stayed said half of her guests opted to take the boat. It was a terrific option. Also we stayed at Intake Farm breaking the Egton Bridge to Robin Hood’s Bay into two days. We were among the senior hikers (73 & 79) but found the hike comfortable. We did opt for B&Bs and used Sherpa/Packhorse to move our baggage. We were self guided and found the camaraderie among the hikers rewarding. We did it in hiking 20 days plus 2 zero days (Grasmere and Richmond). Kirkby Stephen would have been another good zero day. Your video is an excellent introduction to this trail and we will recommend it to any considering the venture. B&B hosts told us that companies that plan trips for hikers book up a lot of the B&Bs early so it can be tough for independent hikers to find accommodation unless they set it up well in advance. We used Walker’s Britain to book accommodation and baggage transfer as recommended by friends who used them in 2013. Our contact at Walker’s was Trina and we found her to be wonderful. Several of the B&B hosts said they had worked with Trina for many (20+ years) and that she was a favourite. Travelling from Canada for this hike made it to our advantage to book through an agency like Walker’s. As a side note, using a baggage transfer has a safety factor in that, the B&B host expects owners of baggage to arrive in a timely manner. They take their hosting seriously and will trigger a search and rescue if you are not on time. Our hostess at Glen Ridding had called all possible restaurants and pubs about a late father daughter pair and was just about to call search and rescue when the two arrived at 9:40 pm. We were impressed.

    Really enjoyed your journey. I did this walk 43 years ago in the opposite direction. If we had started with the Lakes we would not have left them. Followed Wainwright’s advice and chose our own route across so only followed the official route in some sections. Best walk I ever did.

    I was surprised to find that you missed quite possibly the best campsite and break stop on the walk at Danby Wiske. Church Farm is amazing. An honesty shop, toilets and a kettle to make a brew.
    There are also hotels at Chop Gate and Great Broughton (Clay Bank Top) and both hotels will collect from Clay Bank Car Park. Also, now Clay Bank Huts (they look fabulous and I can’t wait to try them out).
    Another place worth noting is Intake Farm at Littlebeck. Both camping and b&b. Judith is a legend, with wonderful hospitality.

    Watched your video with real interest, especially when you mentioned plant-based supplies. My wife and I plan to come to England in early May 2024 to hike the C2C. I’m used to mailing my resupplies to the post offices along the way, but maybe we can do well with the coops and stores. We plan to camp about half the time, and have no solid plan on where we will camp and where we will stay indoors. Your video has been the best info I’ve found so far. Thank you!

    Mary, I was so glad to find the videos of your walk. I'm going in May and I am certainly excited. I have my accommodations planned, but my daughter and son-in-law have decided now to accompany me. Finding places for myself was difficult two weeks ago. I imagine now will be even more of a challenge. Your information I think will make my trip better for sure, but for me, it would have been helpful in the accommodation section if there had been information on names of hotels, airbnbs, and hostels so that I could better investigate the options. Google doesn't provide many. Anyway, thanks for the wealth of information. Your optimism and joy are a treat.

      Thanks Rick, it sounds like it is going to be a great hike! I did consider adding in names of all the places for accommodation and food - but it would have been such a huge job and can change regularly. So I decided against it with the thought that all those places are listed in guidebooks and would be updated more regularly to reflect that. Have a great time!

    I found this video very helpful. I have already watched the 3 part series that shows the walk. So this answers many questions I had as I watched you walking. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. I am heading to the walk (coming over from 🇨🇦) in May. I was hoping you might let me know what the 'wild camping' opportunities are like on the walk? I see there are many 'official' campsites along the way but I am hoping to do a night or two on the cheap. Any insight is appreciated. I hope the 2023 walking season is good to you.

      So glad this was helpful! I found OS on my phone brilliant, what I did was plan my routes for each day in advance so I had them all downloaded before I went. A very informative video Mary which will certainly be useful to any future Coast to Coasters, just one thing that was wrong, I live locally to the start of the Coast to Coast and there are trains that stop at St Bees on a Sunday, but not as many as a weekday, I don't think the National Park allow Coast to Coast signage in the Lake District, that is why you don't see much there but it might change when it becomes a National Trail in 2025, i would also recommend to split the trail into 3 days between Patterdale and Kirkby Stephen rather than the 2 days in most of the guilde books.

    Hiking where there are pubs along the trail = a very good time. Good advice on the recommendation not to go ultralight. It always bugs me to see people slackpacking and they take hardly anything with them. On a well travelled trail, help may come by if you get hurt but sometimes no one will see you so having a tent and a quilt could save your life. Thanks for making me hungry late at night! I have been out hiking and came to the point where I just needed to get off trail and stay somewhere and ... nothing was available...NOTHING. Talk about a real downer having to find a place to pitch the tent when you just want to stay in a room with a bed. I don't relish the idea of taking any pet on a long trail such as a dog. Pets can be very head strung and decide at any point that they just don't want to cooperate any longer to go any further. It's up to the pet owner but I think it's much easier not having to carry their food, etc. That's a very good point. Look behind you because sometimes there are fantastic views on your back side! This was super informative. Thank you for putting it together. John

    thank you for all of the information about the trail.
    I plan to hike the C2c in a tent. Since I'm from Germany, unfortunately I can't take my gas for the stove with me. Can you please tell me if there is a way to get a gas cartridge in St Bees?

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures

      You might find it hard to find anywhere in St Bees as the shops are minimal. My recommendation would be to get it from one of the main towns or cities as you travel there.

I had already booked the trains before I realized that I wasn't allowed to take the gas canisters with me. I am now considering whether it is possible to have a cartridge sent to the starting accommodation by a mail order company from Great Britain. Unfortunately I can't find an online retailer in the UK for this need. could you please help me again: do you know an online dealer who sends gas cartridges (preferably Soto or Primus)? Kind regards, Andrea

    Last year I backpacked around 1/2 of the South west coast path. This year I am planning on doing this trail. Since I'll be backpacking, I am using a stove that runs on gas. I am not from the UK so I cannot take gas with me via airplane/train. Do you know any place to get some gas before I start my hike?

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  4 месяца назад

      You can get it from any outdoor store in any of the larger towns/cities in the UK - you will not be able to get it from the start point at St.Bees. There is also a place around half way on the trail where you can get more - a place called Kirby Stephen is a popular place to pick them up. Where are you flying to / staying before your hike?
