Fish with 5 fin boxes and some rocker are almost a one board quiver, twinny with trailer, 3 fin and when waves are head high or overhead quads. Puddlefish yeeoow
First board is a 5 6" foam fish and I love it!! Definitely difficult to learn on but after being persistent and going a handful of times I catch waves every time I get a sesh in.
Nowadays the term 'fish surfboard' is abused. What used to be just a fish, now it is known as 'twin fin retro fish' and it's got to be short and high(er) volume.
I shaped my a couple of weeks ago. I tried it once. Surfing is always good but I'm so used to thrusters and single fins that on mine I felt very lose. Loser than the single fin since it does not have a fin in the middle that helps you to maintain stability. However it's a matter of getting used to. It reminds me of my shortboard skateboard. Once riding a cruiser or a longboard skateboard for a while then switching back to the shortboard. The brain takes a couple of waves to register you have a different board under your feet.
I love to surf fishies :-) For small and weak surf in the netherlands im used to surf on a Lost puddlefish 5'8 (lib) with split keelfins and for travelling or better days in the Netherlands im surfing a Lost RNF Redux 5'8 (lib) with 2+1 fins. I also like to surf the Bufo boogiefish twin when it's really shit conditions
dude you were ripping on that thing. your first point was spot on. about 6 months deep into my fish and still a learning journey. makes jumping back on the thruster all the more fun! and vice versa as well.
I have a ...Lost round nose fish quad that works really well. Super fast as a twin but too loose and skatey. Need to find some nice keels and I’m sure it’ll work better.
Bro, I learnt to surf on a fish, I’m a bit like you at 6,1ft 75kg (lean), I tried to learn on a 8ft g board but it didn’t work, but then I tried a 6ft6 fish and then it just clicked
Hey! I get the three lessons - but I don't really understand why it's so different on a fish compared to a shortboard. Are they slower? Less easy to turn?
U only have one fin in the water if you go to hard (I had a bunch of fotos of me doing this) so I would slide all over (also fun)...so to kales point, you have to be more in tune with the wave and sort of do what it lets you do vs. having multiple fins and pivot points on a less boxy board, etc...OG fish is almost like a boogie board with fins. Watch the documentary FISH 🐠
I have an Al Merrick Pod 6’8” 21 3/4 wide3” thick. Is that nearly a Fish? I ride in small waves. I am 73-74kg. Being struggling with my pop up. Struggling even more to find time due to life pressures like running a business, partner’s illness, etc. I am 48 yrs old now. Maybe I should goto a long board when I can save up for one. Sometimes I have “good” days where I am just happy to stand up and ride the wave until it loses power. The struggle days are not worth talking about.
Mate, get yourself a longboard. I tried to learn to surf for a year on a seven foot minmal which was very thin and more suited ot performance longboarding. I hated it and can't believe I didn't quit. I rarely got up. One day I made the commitment and bought an 8foot. Was so much easier, and I was able to stand up on the 7ft board only a few days after trying on my 8ft. Long story short, you progress far faster and have far more fun (fun being the most important point) when you let the board work for you, not against you. Get a longer board! I was 23 when I tried to learn, and 80 kg. I didn't get to surfing on a 6,8 until about two years in (surfing about 1 a month).
@@HowtoRip right, I'm 56 kg and far less skilled than you but not a beginner. My guess is less than a 5'2, am I right? Btw I love this kinds of videos you guys are making now.
@@Awerback It's all about preference. You can for three inches shorter than your shortboard. Of course take in consideration your body weight and skills. People tend to lie about their surf skills. Just be honest to your self and get a volume calculator.
Many people reccomend a fish for its compatibility with different "levels". A soft board is great to learn on but can get boring or not allow the person to progress much once they master it. A fish usually has a wider and flatter rocker, allowing more volume to the board. Making it great for a beginner to learn on and still having room for progress
Im new to surfing. done abotu three weeks and doing a my fourth trip now. After doing my research ive decided to Buy a fish for my first board... just wondering about how length will affect things?
The less volume, the shorter, all these aspects affects how long would take you to learn. I.e. the pop up and riding. But once dominating those aspects you will learn on a shorter board," the opposite of the norm." It will set you up to try other boards, especially shorter. I learned in a shortboard back in the 90's. Took me three months to pop up. But once I learned that, riding and carving came easier since I learned on a shortboard.
People often say that you should learn on a longboard, but I did the opposite, my first board was a 5'9 fish twin fin, learning onna small board great imo cause you can move to a regular thruster much more easily since the skillset is similar instead of the learning curve of going from a long board to a thruster I mostly ride quad fin or 2+1 now, and ofc a thruster, but I have a fish too and it's really fun
Why do you call it a "fish?" I haven't surfed in 30 years. Twinnies were never called "fishes" when I surfed in the 80s. Is that just because it's a really short board?
It's because they have a big swallow tail that makes their outline resemble a fish :) There are twin fin boards and twin fin fishes, but they're not necessarily the same.

It makes me think the twin plus trailer could be an awesome setup on a fish though, would be easier to change between boards too

Quad fishes are more predictable and vertical. I don't like surfing back hand on tweenies. They don't carve well and I always loose control.
