  • Recently, the R46s assigned to the Rockaway Park Shuttle were swapped out for the R179s. This was a fairly quick rolling stock swap, and was done soon after the introduction of the R211As to passenger service. Enjoy!

Lest we forget the difficult (early) history of the R46s...cracked trucks, lawsuits, drama, the bankruptcy/bust of Pullman Standard and horrible MTBF. Only after rebuilding(more like re-engineering) by Morrision Knudson in the early 90s did the R46 become liveable. Will miss the 70s formica/wood paneling and colorful seats though. Sorry to see them go.....

Tbh R179s are such a fantastic fit for the Rockaway Shuttle, even though the R46s certainly carried a great legacy.

I remember riding the shuttle with my family to Playland (Beach 98th St). Back then, it was the "E". The amusement park, the beach, the rolling stock (R 1-9's, R 40 Slants). The younger viewers may have to Google "Rockaway Playland".

I remember when I used to work in the Rockaways and after work I would ride the Shuttle. I would stand on the seats "holding the pole at the same time" and with the train swaying it felt like I was subway surfing "lol". Just wouldn't be the same vibe with these trains "SMH" 😔

That is really too bad. I'll miss sitting in that forward-facing seat going across the bay with the lights off. The R46s on Rockaway felt like a time machine back to '90s New York railfaning.

Just an example of how the MTA treats the Rockaways. Like a forgotten step child. No reason why old equipment should be on that line for so many years while other lines are managed better.

@@ariesarethebest271 Cause the shuttles across the system don't need that much attention since they are shuttles, and their rolling stock is shared hence why there was no NTTs on it. A used majority R46s sooo since the R211s are replacing all r46s now there is a reason to put NTTs on the Rockaway shuttle.

The builder doesn't think this new technology crap is going to last 20 years. So yes the older cars are better.,but you are on the outside looking in and have no idea what's going on

This is stupid, they should keep R46 on the shuttle until all are retired, why put new reliable trains on a short barely used route. It would make logical sense to keep the young and reliable fleet on the A, and keep R46 on the shuttle where they won't be as abused. MTA logic will NEVER make sense.

That way when only 5 cars of 179s are in the shop another 5 could be used on the shuttle line instead of sitting in the yard its good for the rotation of the 179s since the 46s are being rotated less

@@toxicrepstan1897I hate to inform you, but the 179s mpf is less than 300,000 miles. The actual mileage is less then 295,000. Only the 46's are worse. So you're garbage can train that you think is so great, is next to last in failures!
