MY LEAST FAVORITE 4K BLU-RAYS | Avoid These 4K Blu-rays

- Avoid these 4K Blu-ray releases and save your money! These few discs are some of my least favorite from the new 4K UltraHD format, and are not worth an upgrade over their Blu-ray counterparts in my opinion.

good times before the pandemic.
Please keep updating us on 4K videos that you don't recommend purchasing. Nobody wants to feel disappointed after expecting a good 4K experience.
2001 and The Shining look so good because Kubrick's personal assistant Leon Vitali is involved. Mr.. Vitali worked with Kubrick for decades and knows better than anyone alive how the films are supposed to look. He also is nearly as exacting as Kubrick.
Who else bought T2 on 4k just because it was $7.50?
I picked it up didn't check it out yet though.
Paid 14 for it, thought it was really good, the HDR made a difference
Lol. I did.
Going to get a lot of hate for this, but I hate harsh film grain. I loved T2 because because the grain wasn’t so bad. I thought it was a good transfer
What ?? You can get T2 on 4k for only $7.50 !! That's very cheap for any 4k !!
Im so glad I stumbled on this channel. I was wondering if I was going to go broke having to upgrade all my blu rays. I'm happy to know that due to the crappy quality of a lot of 4k releases, I can hold off on a lot of these.
Welcome!
Hey Jeff, just joined your channel. Thanks for all the cool infos on 4Ks. I love movies, i have a roughly 400 blu-ray collection and i've wanted to "step-up" to 4K, for most of my favorite movies. I don't have a 4K player yet but i'll be buying the next PS5 when it releases at the end of the year and since it includes a 4K player, i thought i should start collecting those 4Ks right now. I've watched a few of your videos and they're a great help to "get started"... So, thanks again ! ;-)
Hey Jeff! Thanks for posting this one man. Very helpful.
What you were saying, about the whole porting bluray tranfers over to 4k, reminds me of the crap that happened when the remastering of music trend really started to kick in. And some record labels were caught just increasing the volume of old masters instead of really giving it the royal treatment to make it sound its best. Pure laziness and greed. 👍👍
There are a lot of people who actually do better job then record labels and from worse sources you should check sharemania
You might only want the feature where the machine REMEMBERS THE LOCATION Where you stopped the film.
The maker is probably only interested in the feature that tells them how many people are watching and when they’re watching, in real time.
Subbed, really enjoyed watching your videos the last few days. i collected over 1k VHS then onto DVD then Blu ray but sold my collection about 6 years ago. Just grabbed a new 4k tv and player and have just purchased interstellar as my first 4k watch! thanks for the great videos
Nice video. I appreciate the information on "Gremlins". Have a Happy New Year.
Appreciate your honesty, if im going to pay extra for that 4k UHD release i want the studio behind the release to put in the effort to deliever something really nice!
Hello Jeff, I’m new to 4K and I am so very grateful for all of your reviews. They save me from buying awful updates to compliment my current blu ray collection. I nearly bought T2 then checked this out. I have It’s a Wonderful Life in 4K now and it is excellent, as you said. I intend to keep building my library over time. As you rightly say, when studios make the effort, then so will I, to invest in a product that they spend time on with my hard earned cash. Thank you for all of the advice and please keep it coming 😁
Just new to your channel today! I enjoy your honesty and frankness! Thanks.
I look forward to catching up on your videos!
Truly enjoy your videos, very informative. Excellent. I own over 21000 blurays/dvds and 945 laserdiscs. Thanks, and Happy New Year!
Thank you for posting this video. I’m new to 4 k releases and have a lot of blu rays and this video makes me cautious about buying some new releases. I hate the corporate greed and them selling us lesser versions of movies we love. Us, movie lovers need channels like this.
If 4K Blu-ray was all about "corporate greed", then 4K discs would no longer be available. 4K Blu-ray doesn't generate much revenue, for the studios. I'm very thankful physical media is still an option. Besides, the studios have already been paid for ALL their discs ordered by retailers (from their distributors). Even if a disc doesn't sell, the studio has already been paid. It's the retailer that takes the loss.
Thank you for this useful info!!! 🙏 Here in Chile 🇨🇱, we spend at around US$50+ per each 4K release at least
Ebay is like $15 plus shipping
Happy New Year Jeff! I gotta say if there's an Atmos track I'm going to prefer it over the Blu-Ray; my eyes aren't as good as they used to be but a kick ass soundstage makes the movie immersive!
Glad I found ur channel. Great reviews. If u don't mind me asking what kind of 4k tv do u own ?
Allright, then this all begs the big question: When will Criterion get fully into 4K?
I was wondering the same thing!
I don't know, but I'm not rebuying all the Criterions in 4K.
@@markbartoszek8585 lol yeah they’d probably make it $20 more
Not happening
2 reasons. 1: 4k discs are typically region free and Criterion are snide af about their films being sold in other countries. 2: Their blu rays are already of the highest possible quality putting it on a larger disc isn't going to make a difference.
Thanks for the tips. I agree especially for animated movies. Disney and Pixar should invest in the conversion but it seems they do not want to pump money into it. They could easily (but would cost a lot!) re render these into 4K resolution.
Very informative, thanks!
As always excellent and extremely useful reviews on 4k quality. Really appreciate your videos and detail is fantastic.
You have the same hobby interest I have but you are more informed than I am . I thank you for your videos. Keep doing them very helpful. Thanks again.🤗
Terminator 2 looks great despite the revisionism. I still have the 2006 Blu-ray with the grain and original stunt double bike scene.
I agree that Last Jedi in 4K HDR looks underwhelming. Rise and Force Awakens have better contrast.
Aladdin 4K looks amazing. I really don’t mind revisionist color grading. Excellent release just like Beauty and the Beast.
New to the channel. Great stuff! Subscriber now. What's your opinion about the watchmen ultimate cut
Thank you for the information
You are very informative
2:27 get the 2015 T2 BD release. It’s the only one with film grain intact. The others, such as Skynet Edition, suffer from DNR and a soft picture.
The only reason i picked up the T2 4k was it was dirt cheap at $7.50. The only other copy I have of it is on VHS lol is the 2015 one still easy to find?
@@Gmen2010champs depends. Just make sure they don't send you the 2006, 2009 or 2017 discs by mistake. It tends to cost a few dollars more than the 2009 disc (most common one). It has the same transfer but no DNR, which is why it's superior.
The 2015 disc is missing a commentary from the Skynet Edition, but according to the blu-ray.com forums it is on the Canadian steelbook edition from Mondo. In fact, it is on the regular Canadian edition as well. Its no big deal though, but if you have to have all the commentaries on BD then you'll want it. Here is a thread about it if you want to read: forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=262411
Worth noting is the 3D Blu-ray of T2. I haven't seen it, since I don't have a 3D TV, but the reviews I've read say it's good inspite of its DNR use.
@@pungisotu Eric Kelly I actually wanted the 3D one. Im one of the 10 people that actually enjoy 3D lol but it wasnt region free. I believe it was only released in Korea unfortunately. I did see it in the theater and I was actually impressed by it just sucks that it didnt get a US or region free release. But I'll definitely be looking around for that Canadian release! Thank you
@@Gmen2010champs I didn't know about Korea, but there is a Region B release from Studio Canal in the UK as well as a steelbook from Zaavi, also Region B, UK. I missed it in the theaters, so would love to see it also. If it's that good, I'd say get a region free 3D BD player.
If the 4K release comes with the 1080p Blu Ray copy disc in the box, wouldn't that be the 2015 version?
I agree with you on the terrible T2 4K ,as I find it a step back from the blu ray as the picture is terrible and the sound actually drops out in a few places, and my setup while not top of the line is rather good as I did pay over 3 k for the whole thing! Now I read somewhere there is a proper 4K that Cameron did but who knows when he'll get around to setting it up and releasing it as he's knee deep in Avatar muck!
Good advice. Thanks for your wisdom and experience.
Good stuff man. Now subscribed. Keep the 4K stuff coming!
Not shocked about the Puppet Master. I’ve found the 4K to be cheaper than the Blu-ray on Amazon countless times.
I don't agree that the regular Blu of Gremlins is better. The 4k wins by a million miles in my eyes. It's a really old movie too and they've done a great job upgrading it.
Doesnt matter standed Bluray is better ultra is too dark
Oh snap! Calling out that 60% #Shade lol. Great video, as always! Happy to be a subscriber. :)

Any views on the 4K version of Spartacus ( Kirk Douglas original )?
I’ve heard it is supposed to be quite good in 4K.
I mean you get Blu-ray with the 4K and for most movies the difference in price is about 5 bucks.. I get the special edition releases but not regular Blu-ray
Mostly agree with your excellent review.
The controversial "Gremlins" issue... Even if it's not the best and I feel there's still room for improvement, it's still the better version we will get and an impressive 'quantum leap' over the old and almost mediocre Blu-Ray.
No ranking needed. MUCH APPRECIATED! I got Jason Bourne set for Christmas 2020. The disk isn't working, but the digital download seemed okay, but my equipment is pretty old. Oh, I subscribed!
Good video I'll be on the lookout from now on.
Do you have saving private Ryan on 4k?
I got it on bluray and hdx but the transfer looks awful like a tweak dvd upgrade. Lol. Not sure how it would look on 4k
Let me know. Thanks 🙂
I love the content! Kudos to you for telling it like it is. However the super -distracting thing is that while the blu-rays behind you are supposedly in alphabetical order they respect the first letter but then it goes to crap. Was that intentional?
I loved Gremlins,,,I didn't avoid and no regrets at all
Gremlins was just fine.
I just watched his full review on Gremlins and he says "I love the HDR in this movie, they did a great job"
Then you watch this video and he says the HDR is bad and they did a bad job...I'm a bit confused. I'm just going to buy Gremlins, it's on sale for 10 bucks right now.
EDIT I got it: Well worth 10 bucks! The HDR and everything looks great in the movie! Very happy!
@@dodsy2781 It’s especially kind of a non-point if you don’t already own it and just want the film.
I’d only be annoyed if I was specifically rebuying it for the HDR.
@@dodsy2781 if that's the case, I know he's mentioned in several reviews that the companies send him free copies. I wonder if he was sent gremlins or not. And if he was, that just tells you his reviews are biased when he is sent stuff from companies. Maybe afraid of burning bridges. Hopefully not the case but I don't know how else I'd interpret that.
Thanks bro good vid. I'm getting a collection together to rip for a Plex server at home and I was just so lost because I never had a 4k TV until recently! This was very informative thanks again homie
So does it make sense to buy the 4k if it's cheaper and just use the included blu ray or are the blu rays different too?
I like to collect steelbooks so I bought the Gremlins, Alladin, and Star Wars but for cheap. Best Buy had a good sale going on for their steelbooks as low as $9.99.
Justin Lopez Media -your lucky many Best Buy’s don’t even sell CD’s or Blu-Ray’s anymore
@@astrosjer822 What ? Sure, they do. I have yet to find a Best Buy location that doesn't sell physical media. Whenever I check BB store availability for new Blu-ray releases, EVERY location has them. So, I'm not sure why you say otherwise.
Gremlins was definitely from a new master and looks way better than the Blu-ray. Tons more fine detail and way better grain rendering. The HDR is a bit too teal like most, but it's definitely better than the Blu-ray in every other way.
I turned it off when he said Gremlins didnt need to be in 4k andthe bluray was better, I dread to think what else this spews out of his mouth
Excellent review. You saved me lots of money. I agree with the Criterion info. also Oppo, Sony es and Panasonic 4k bluray players will optimize bluray to artificial 4k if you don't mind the hdr saturation.
Keep the videos coming! You are doing great!
James Cameron oversaw the 4K remaster and HDR grading himself. It was his choice to remove the film grain, so anyone saying that the grain missing is a bad thing is just wrong. James Cameron did not intend for the grain to be there but shooting digitally in 1990 wasn't a thing yet. I absolutely loved the 4K transfer of T2 and have zero regrets buying it. Watching it in 4K is how the director intended it to be. If you love grain then this disc isn't for you and if you are a grain hater like myself, then this is the version to own.
My Terminator 2 extreme DVD still looks great also
Not on a 4k screen it won't mate.
Great video ! Thank you
Thanks for the reviews it helps me decide which movies to buy.
What! Gremlins looked great
I have a brilliant idea: To make 5 or 10 film list with 7.1 Dolby sound and explain about them which is the best, second best etc
Yes, that would be great!
I really love how you know so much about this stuff. I'm just starting to collect 4K movies. I still don't fully get what makes something "true" 4k & how u know which you're actually getting. Idk the difference in sound categories either. (Dolby Atmos, etc.). I dig a lot online to find out the info, but it's a pain! Do u have a video where u go into detail about the whole 4k experience? If not, would u please make one? I have my tv. But I need to get my player & a surround sound system (for my first time) & I'd like to know what to watch out for. I'm on a tight budget, so I'm not interested in top-notch, but I also wanna have a set-up I can really enjoy. I'm not opposed to saving up or adding a little at a time, but idk what's most important. Again, thanks for all the details u go into with your videos. Much appreciated!
Is the bluray that comes with the 4k the same as the older bluray you showed?
You’ve earned another subscriber. 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I have T2 Blu-ray. It looks really good. I'm still holding off on 4K since it's too expensive still and I don't see anything impressive with 4K.
I followed you just before you moved to your new home. Have you checked out Jaws in 4k , and if so what did you thing of the video upgrade? Also, what projector are you using.
I agree with the 4K Terminator 2, I bought it only because it was very cheap. I knew there was something off about the color throughout the entire film. Had to adjust the brightness, sharpness, and color a lot to get it right. I had the Artisian T2 Special Edition and it looked great for a DVD.
Disney has been putting out more and more crap lately. It's changed dramatically from the company that it used to be. I stopped supporting Disney completely.
It’s almost like why but 4K most of the blu rays look better like a lot better
Dont get me started on their current business practices and their cheap constant remakes. But honestly what is wrong with disney and their greed?!? They charge $25-30 for DVDS...and it's any movie...old or new...for a dvd lmao. They cost like 5 cents to make...so annoyingly overpriced.
Slenderfoxx37 what??? Lol the 4K blu ray combos are only 30 dollars
you are an idiot. I am sure that what you put out is great you buttfuck
Master Trainer -Disney is doing the new Peter Jackson Beatles movie coming out in September and I am expecting a 4K release with it.
I thought gremlins looked awesome, the color is way better imo. Love the channel, excited to see you growing so much.
@UCOz4gsaT1xCB1v-9GmxaDlw seems to be the case with certain films.
Agreed! I loved the color/ HDR and increased clarity. Also, the grain didn't bother me at all. Absolutely a must for fans of Gremlins.
Hey agree to disagree. I just didn’t like the coloring on it and I was disappointed in the grain. But that’s just my eye versus anyone else!
@@JeffRauseo yeah i also have the 4k version and even downconverting to 2k was grainy
shoot on film=grain so dont cry
Great video. Which places would you recommend for blu-ray reviews?
Blu-ray.com
Out of curiosity with the Pan’s Labyrinth 4K copy, is the blu ray that comes with it the criterion one that you talk about?
One more thing i am excited about Doctor Sleep 4k, Midway 4k, and Knives Out on 4K. And I agree with you on Disney and Marvel. I always do my research on what to buy on 4k.
Dr sleep was amazing on 4k
Completely disagree with the Aladdin transfer. It definitely is an upgrade over the blu ray. T2 was also a decent upgrade over the bluray. The skynet edition and all other previous editions were plagued with banding issues. This one was a clean and sharp transfer. I own the European 4k transfer for T2 and the 3d as well.
Banding wouldn't happen with the new 10 bit color space...
Do you watch the 4k version first then bluray or in reverse?
I bought the T2 4K by mistake w/o doing any research on it. Still haven't brought myself to watch it haha. Also own TLJ 4K, which I thought didn't look that bad. Own Gremlins 4K digital which I still have to watch (never saw it), but I got it for $5. Wished I never bought T2 though haha. Great video!
I love your videos... this also proves the problem with reviews on ‘quality’ though, so often it’s subjective! I personally thought T-2 looked fantastic... And to be honest I’ve been let down by a lot of 4K titles and wish I hadn’t invested in it so heavily!
I'm glad you give a fair review Jeff I have bought or avoided as per review it is a great thing you do
Thanks..good job.
Hey Jeff can we have an update to this but with the best Blu rays on the market?
Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther I found had poor audio quality. Pic quality was fine though.
@@HackingSpartan It's not native 4K when 90% of the footage is CGI
Hi. I'm having trouble finding dolby atmos movies. 4k or bluray. Is there something I am missing ? Are all bluray dolby atmos ? Because on most websites it does not mention the fact if the movie has dolby atmos. Thanks
I think most of the new movies has dolby atmos, try batman v superman and the new game of thrones 4k edition
So glad I found your channel. Invaluable info and you save everyone money.
This is a great PSA video on what to avoid once I make the jump to 4K. Thanks for sharing. Great video.
100% agree
Terminator 2 remaster I have in 3d and it looks really good. One of the best audio is fine
should I buy a STREAMING player when my 4k tv streams?
Thanks for the info.
I love your honesty. Even when you were looking forward to a disc, you're still honest about it. Thank you.
It’s rare that people will comment and it’s rare that they will say honest things.
Wise and honest is extremely helpful.
Bah bought the 4k Aladdin since it is one of my favorite animation movies. Great video though. Shame about Disney and how they treat their products. Doubt Walt Disney would have been happy about the current state of affairs.
It's a trip to hear him say happy new year, happy 2020, now days. With everything thatd been going on.
Nice reviews...thank you...i found you very informative...i never thought about being careful about 4k transfers..i kinda just assumed they were superior versions 🤦♂️
they are, this dude was wrong at points like with Gremlins and Pan's Labyrinth
New here, have 500 BR & just started with 4K for projector. Great job breaking down technical facts . Thank you
Gremlins looked awesome on 4K.
LOL!
Thanks. I just bought it and was saddened by what he said. I feel better now
I'm a huge 4k enthusiast. Thanks for these videos. You got a new subscriber today
Definitely interested if you have changed this list at all ! Always love seeing people's least favorite 4ks
Loved the picture quality of Aladdin 4K, looked beautiful and a worthwhile upgrade over the Blu-ray imho.
ICA Mitchell I have just bought the Aladdin 4K and lion king amazing
Didn't get the 4k version since i read that Aladdin 4k is upscaled and not native 4k. So I got the 3d version instead which came with both 2d and 3d
@@alexf8148 Improved detail, improved contrast, improved black levels, improved colors, more balanced brightness, specular highlights, OAR. The 4K release "soars above" the Blu-ray release and is a "fantastic improvement" (ultrahd.highdefdigest.com/74851/aladdin4kultrahdbluray.html).
I agree! While Little Mermaid 4k was a disappointing upgrade, the upgrade in Aladdin was a lot more noticeable.
I buy 4ks if 1. it would look incredible on 4K (Saving Private Ryan, Planet of the Apes Trilogy) or 2. its really cheap (Alien, John Wick 1 & 2).
I still buy everything Bluray. I still can't see much differences. Like what picture quality difference would you get from the Disney Cartoon Blurays to their 4ks?*
Depends on your TV. If you just have an entry level 4k tv it isn't much of an upgrade
Traditional drawn animation is low definition by nature so really nothing would be gained.
@@jeffkardosjr.3825 I don't particularly agree. Hand painted canvases are typically used as backgrounds and looks great on 4k imo. The higher resolution scans also give a bit more depth to the picture, as well as having a wider color gamut, letting us see the artwork closer to how it was meant to be seen
Possibly a dumb question, but are the bluray discs that come with these 4k releases the same as regular/older bluray releases though? I've bought 4k boxes with that assumption.
Yes your channel and your videos have been extremely helpful
Would love to see the Back the the Future movies released in 4k

Last Jedi looked fucking amazing on 4K for me.
Too bad it's a fucking terrible movie though.
@@colliric God awful
I enjoy the videos. Can you do something or make a video about Akita 4K and how Funimation screwed up and sent out the wrong discs without hdr. :3
Is th bluray with these 4k just a blurya version of the 4k or a bluray of previous and better edition?
Will you be doing a best 3D blu-ray list?
He doesn't review 3-D Blu-rays so doubt that
I was lucky to picke up the movie Gravity 3D bluray for $1 at the Dollar Tree. I'll give it to my brother which has a LG 3D tv.
I loved Gravity in 3D. Saw it at my local Air & Space Museum’s IMAX while they still showed commercial films and it was incredible.
Doctor Strange is another really great 3D movie. It really adds to the scale, depth, and perspective.
I hear that the 4k of The Last Jedi has a great transfer from multiple review sites.
There is no blacks, everything is grey and the atmos doesn't have high sounds it's just mids and surround
I'm usually not too bothered about 4k blu-rays, for me the increase in detail and colour rarely warrants the extra cost. But being totally honest, after seeing The Last Jedi in 4K, i don't want to go back in this case. The colour is so much richer and provides better depth, and the image is definitely more refined and crisp (there admittedly isn't much in terms of new detail, but i think that's more a compliment to how good the 1080p version was). Tbh, I have the feeling his opinion of the story was colouring his review of the transfer. There were no other 4K Star Wars at the time he released this video, so what basis did he have for thinking the 4k transfers for The Force Awakens and Rise of Skywalker would be better?
@@LILGHETTI I think you've got adjust your HDR settings on your tv mate (i had the same problem until i noticed i had HDR turned off. I also found that looking for guides on how to tune a tv for 4k can be very helpful).
I have a question about TV's. My LG has an HDR picture setting, does that put on an artificial HDR onto any movie OR does it activate HDR to work with your HDR 4K movies? Thanx
It just lets you decide how much HDR to use I think. Games seem to have their own default settings
I am looking at my extensive dvd collection to bypass the Blu-ray treatment and jump directly to 4k , only for a selected few as they are not cheap enough yet.
It'd be interesting to see what equipment you use to review your movies. Your complains about some 4Ks (except T2) seems that you don't have a good equipment or you think that what's on 1080p is how a movie has to look. You also don't consider the original film stock use in some movies like on Gremlins.
I like that this is an avoid list with reasoning instead of just a hate list which creators are tempted to do to get views. It's informative and appreciated.
my fav part is when he says Gremlins is just a bluray ported to 4k when its actually a new scan and looks miles better, if he can't get that right then you shouldn't be listening to him
