(made for MGM) while Universal owns the others (made for Universal or Paramount, except Rope which was WB but came thru Hitchcock's estate). Universal was able to get NxNW licensed for the U.S. version of its Hitchcock Blu-ray set, but not for its 4K sets (I have all three); it's good to see WB is moving forward with it now. Perhaps you can move on to some of the other WB-owned Hitchcocks.
The Matrix 4K transfer is a blast, one of the best UHD blu-rays I watched. Definitely a must have and a perfect demonstration of properly remastered 35mm films! Thank you for that impressive work.
For me, 4k really makes sense for older movies, that's why many restorations look absolutely gorgeous. Many of them shot on 35 mm film stock, with a native resolution of at least 6.5k. It's still uncertain which is the maximum resolution of a 35 mm film stock. When it comes to those Hitchcock restorations, Vertigo is still my favorite. Shot in VistaVision, it's just a jaw dropping 4k transfer. As for the newer movies shot on digital cameras, 4k is just hit or miss. Ironically, there are still a lot of modern movies which are upscales from 2k. The pristine, digital look of these movies cope well enough with the basic blu-ray format, I just don't see much improvement in their 4k counterparts.
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome Because no one else was there to see the movie, I was worried that there might be something wrong with me because I liked it so much. Im 19 years old and im collecting media. My dad took me to watch Edge of Tomorrow when it was released and it was awesome. Definitely going to pick up the 4k DVD
Loved that Cruise winner, but I think they hurt themselves with that horrible soap opera title. It's like calling it All My Children, As The World Turns or The Young And The Restless.

Great video! Been sitting on the Matrix triolgy waiting for a good sale. Some movies I'm hoping we get on 4k are The Last Samurai, The Count of Monte Cristo, Last of the Mohicans, and the Hateful 8, among others!
I agree. The 4K for Predator is EXCELLENT. The grain, OH, the grain. I was in therapy for a long time and my therapist kept telling me to let it go -- the D.N.R. job, that is -- and now, with the 4K, we're trying to forget about the Terminator 2 disc....

You’re taking a giant slap in the face with those 4K discs, both picture and audio wise.
Nice!! Such a great movie and a beautiful 4K. Im not feeling very optimistic about Best Buy resuming sales. I would be surprised if they got back in the game 😢
I think what’s stupid about edge of tomorrow is that they re released for the people demanding a 4K UHD release which are mostly home theater enthusiasts that loved that bass test for their home theater… now they got nerfed bass. Kind of stupid on the publishers part, the target audience isn’t people with sound bars, it’s people with killer home theaters. What were they worried about? Why tone it down?
Awesome description on different formats! Keep it up!! Have to say tho, I think I learned one of two things.. either one, you’re just NOT a “bass head” or 2. We need to get you some bass shakers or a reallly hood infrasonic subwoofer 2x18” or 21-24”! The RBH single 21” behind your seat comes to mind (and they’re located in Layton!) ;) although it’s a bit expensive, just imagine one of those SI 24”s in your HT room! 🎉 haha
I also like EoT. I saw it in the cinema back then. You can watch it again and again, just like Groundhog Day or the Star Trek TNG episode Deja Vu. Just a good topic. And yes, Truman show in 4k is amazing! Regards from Germany!
I'm not surprised "The Man Who Knew Too Much" looks very good, it was shot in VistaVision, a large format system that gave a huge negative with little grain and great clarity.
For Jaws, I went from the Laserdisc to the 4k. I am very happy with the upgrade. I just hope I don't get that 4k fault that people are talking about where the movie starts to freeze, skip, and then become completely unplayable.
I saw The Fugitive at the pictures with my bandmates and loved it. Our band van driver had a beard so we started called him Dick or Dr. Kimble. He had no idea what the reference was and we never ever told him. Fun times.
YES! "THE ROCK" in 4K would be something I would definitely buy. Bought it in DVD and then bought it again in Blu-ray and would definitely buy it in 4K. (I've only done this with certain movies including the original Top Gun and Star Wars, the original trilogy: IV, V & VI, from laserdisc to dvd to blu-ray.) Yes Disney is no longer going to produce physical media but they've given Sony the rights to produce the physical media of any new movies and catalog titles least for the USA and Canada market... so hopefully Sony will bring out The Rock. "Hunt for Red October" is another Sean Connery movie already in 4K that I bought already having it in Blu-ray and DVD. It's not the best movie to show off 4K as much of the movie is darker and within the confines of a submarine but a great movie.
Have you already listened to Atmos on a soundbar, like the Samsung 990C (11.1.4, with up-firing Atmos)? I'll buy this one since it's substantially more accessible compared to a home theater setup in Brazil. I would like to know the difference for someone who really loves the Atmos experience.

I own the Edge of Tomorrow 4k UHD Bluray. Everything is great until the 3rd final act. Is it just me or did the screen turns so dark I could barley see a thing
To keep it brief, Edge of Tomorrow didn’t do well in theaters because of the marketing. From the way they marketed it on posters, it confused a lot of people into thinking the movie was named “Live. Die. Repeat.”
@dougsmith007 I know! Too bad that international business tyrants and globalists ditched ALL 3D TVs... AND they are restricting all BIG TVs due to their so-called environmental CONTROL AGENDA! EVIL👿
This is one of the best Blu-ray 3D movies ever made. The reaction, with my Sony Bravia 3D tv, was jaw dropping. A family favorite. But, I will buy the 4k.
The film they often used in the 90’s produces some absolutely beautiful 4K transfers. I’m so happy to see these great films get the treatment they deserve. Thanks for watching!
I'm sure it still looks better in 4K but didn't the Matrix also get a recent Blu-Ray re-release that also had the fixed colour grading? That's a movie I was always reluctant to buy on Blu-Ray because, while I'm aware of the slight green tint in the original movie, what I'd heard about the original Blu-Ray release was that the green tint was pumped up to oversaturation because the person doing the colour grading based it on the highway scene from Matrix: Reloaded, which really pumped up the green tint, so the green tint in the original film was no longer subtle the way it was back on the big screen in 1999.
dont feel bad about buying it twice..Let's See..Star wars..I bought it on vhs, beta, laserdisc both original and extended release..DVD...now UHD 4k.. is a new ..8K version going to come out..Yes.. I am all in...need an 8k player though..
You need to change your camera's picture profile so that the images aren't so red. What camera? Use Standard or Neutral instead of vivid which is very over saturated. You can also turn down the saturation on the profile settings. I assume you're shooting jpegs?
I buy 4K,but I am choosey, and follow the advice, of online critics, who have a better handle on audio&picture quality.4K needs a "pretty good" theatre system (imho) to appreciate its assets.Plus I only upgrade to 4K on movies I'm sure I'll watch at least twice in 12-15 months
Maybe I'm in the minority. I loved the upgrade to Blu-Ray because that makes the movies look almost exactly how it was first run in theaters. However, 4K doesn't. It might be a step up in modern visual quality, but that's not how it was intended to look in the original release. But, that's just me. Guess I'm just a purist. I also have "The Fugitive" in Blu-Ray and the skin colors don't look like what you gave an example of. They weren't reddish and looked almost perfect. Much of it might be the color adjustments on the TV itself. I've also found that Blu-Rays look much better on my SONY rather than my Samsung.
Yeah you are definitely in the minority. Dolby Vision looks great, only available on 4K. 1080p Blu-ray is pretty good but for a good transfer 4k is worthwhile. Especially for older film restorations.
Two of my favorites on your list with my all-time fav The Matrix for all the reasons you just said. And in its own way, Truman Show is very similar. Nice list my man!
Great discussion! You beat me to the punch...I have been toying with the idea of doing video on movies with the biggest upgrades for past couple of months. The one that stands out for me is Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds. The blu-ray looks like complete crap compared to the 4K.
I am waiting for Don Camillo… one of those Classic black and white movies that would look so much better in 4K and hdr! There are also quite many old Film Noir movies that deserve 4K restoration.
I couldn't wait until Edge of Tomorrow was released on 4K. Before it was even announced, it was a film I was really hoping would hit the format. A film that got destroyed at the box office due to awful advertising that deserved to be seen a lot more than it was. Agree about The Fugitive. It's one of the best "upgrades" in a while, and a great example of the benefits of moving up to UHD. Although it's not exactly a fair comparison since the Blu-ray looked so bad in the first place, and sometimes you can still get an Atmos track even on the older format. Agree about The Matrix as well. It's easily in my top ten favorite films of all time. I purchased it on DVD (and at the time its 5.1 mix was demo material for a home theater), then again on Blu-ray, then again on UHD, where yet again it was a demo disc for sound. Funny you should mention The Rock. I was just thinking last night (while watching Face/Off and The Untouchables) how it would be nice to get that film in 4K. Two other films I really want in 4K are Dark City (The Crow just released, so there's hope) and Tron Legacy. Supposedly Disney is working on a 4K version, but whether or not that's true, or if it will get a physical release is anyone's guess. It already looks and sounds great on the Blu-ray, but can you imagine it with Dolby Vision and Atmos? 🤯 Also, I don't know if you've heard, but Sony is now going to be doing the physical releases for Disney, so it doesn't seem like Disney is actually ducking out of the physical media space. Sony will be the new distributor and also have a hand in helping Disney decide what to release. Not sure about the actual transfers, but we can only hope Sony will be in charge of that as well since theirs always blow away Disney's anyway.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Well said. Interesting you mention The Matrix dvd as demo material. A long time ago, almost 25 years ago, there was an electronics store I would go to. They had a little home theater demo room. And they had The Matrix playing on a loop for months. I never got tired of seeing all those amazing scenes and dreaming of someday having a home theater of my own. Took a long time to finally get there but it was worth the wait.
The point of the 10hz rumble at the very beginning of the movie Edge of Tomorrow is to start off giving anxiety to the viewer. Low notes have been proven to produce anxiety in human beings and by starting you off like that, the film maker hopes that you’ll be on the edge of your seat and carry that feeling throughout the picture. It’s an effective way to keep the suspense going.
Your bluray screenshots are very red....I'm glad you admitted they were inaccurate. You almost speak with disdain about bluray, what player do you have?
The Hitchcock restorations I've seen so far have been great, I would highlight Vertigo as outstanding. Marnie and Family Plot were also both significant improvements when compared with the shockingly poor blu-rays.
I can't for a second believe that the Blu-Ray version of The Fugitive, as presented here, actually looks that bad. I mean, they wouldn't release something that looks like that. I can recreate that oversaturated look by pressing all the plus buttons on my remote, but that's not something you actually sell to the public! I've never seen any film (except for 8th generation VHS copies) that looks that bad. I mean, the 4K version looks normal next to it. Perhaps that was the idea?
Maybe that is the very first original release. There is a silent remaster encoded with MPEG-4 that looks similar, but I didn't think it looked anywhere near that bad when actually watching it.
EDGE OF TOMORROW was a gimmicky movie originally made more tolerable by 3D, which makes the original 3D blu-ray a better option, because it still has the added gimmick of the subsonic bass sting that opened it. Hitchcock's 1954 remake of his own thriller, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH, is definitely worth the 4K upgrade because of the addition of the original Perspecta multi-channel sound to the new 4K scan. Most new 4K scans will always look better than previous blu-rays, but one of the reasons they don't include newly remastered blu-ray discs with these newer 4K releases is because generally a blu-ray remastered from the same 4K scan looks about as good (even without the HDR in most cases). By the way, a new print of NORTH BY NORTHWEST is being shown at the TCM film festival, probably meaning a new scan of the VistaVision master has been made. It may get a new theatrical release as well, and since they usually make 6K scans of VistaVision movies, it's probably in line soon for a 4K disc release for it's 65th Anniversary by the end of the year.
@@TheVid54 Yea bud it's a fun gimmick for about 5 mins and then it becomes annoying. The fact that nobody even mentions it anymore except you, pretty much says it all.
I didn't think much of the picture quality of Matrix in 4K, l have the 1080p Bluray as well and did not think picture was better. Looks quite dated now
Im sorry that you couldnt watch any modern movies growing up. To me, the 1970s, 80s and 90s were the second Golden Age of Cinema. Look at The Fugitive. I love that this great classic from 1993 is making a comeback on 4K. In 1999, you had The Matrix. And then, there's The Truman Show. The Rock is not as great of a 90s classic. But it is a classic.
If I have the bluray then I will never buy the 4k. I basically buy and watch a movie once and that's it. Haven't been to the theater since the early 80's
Oh you have a few favourite movies double??? pfft maybe I should make my own YT channel ... I have thousands "favourite movies" triple as in BR + 3D + 4K
Please nobody is buying 4K. Sales are really down on that format. Also, you barely can tell the difference between 4K and Blu-ray. I'll stick with Blu-ray.
There are some questionable 4K discs but in general, on a good TV and sound system they are very good. The better your set-up the more you notice the difference.
Absurd comment. Anyone who has a proper 4K OLED or high end projector (ideally an LCOS or LCD laser - even faux K) will immediately notice a huge difference on 99% of all 4K discs compared to HD Blus. And that’s just visually. Atmos audio will make a massive difference on any system 7.1 or higher (and yes, I do know some HD and 3D Blus have Atmos and some 4Ks don’t, but likely a majority do.) So yeah… don’t really care if 4K discs are selling (and clearly they are). The fact that we have them is an amazing gift.
I bought Lord of the Rings 4 times. Went from VHS to buying the DVD, then Bluray, and 4K bluray last fall. Worth it every time

Did you calibrate your screen first?
Two of my favorites on your list with my all-time fav The Matrix for all the reasons you just said. And in its own way, Truman Show is very similar.
Nice list my man!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Great discussion! You beat me to the punch...I have been toying with the idea of doing video on movies with the biggest upgrades for past couple of months. The one that stands out for me is Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds. The blu-ray looks like complete crap compared to the 4K.
I'm hoping to buy the 4K Tombstone and Road to Perdition to replace my blu-rays one day! :-)
Yeah those are great films
Thumbs up for the Rock... I LOVE this movie, and i hope some day they do it justice with atmos and all the bells and whistles it deserves.
I heard a lot of good things about this movie bought its on sale month ago really like it then bought the steelbook last week
Also, I don't know if you've heard, but Sony is now going to be doing the physical releases for Disney, so it doesn't seem like Disney is actually ducking out of the physical media space.
I had not considered that. That’s a very good point. Thanks for watching!
I love Edge of Tomorrow & have it on 4k disc.
I own Marnie and Family Plot on 4K. Looking forward to seeing how they look. Thanks for watching!
Try the European version 4k canal dgital fifth element
John Wayne “The Searchers” on 4K, yes please
Right with you on The Rock. Love it, and 4K would be amazing.
What is wrong with the Blu-ray?
@@LordDementus1987nothing persay. But a 4K print with HDR would be better (particularly for the darker scenes in the sewers/shower room etc).
Eternal sunshine 4K is a great upgrade also
My reason for DVD is so solid I could care less about other formats. I can downsize WITHOUT having to sell anything
I can't for a second believe that the Blu-Ray version of The Fugitive, as presented here, actually looks that bad. I mean, they wouldn't release something
that looks like that.
Aliens on 4K with the new Atmos mix is awesome, big upgrade imo.
I agree! I did a review of the new Aliens 4K
ruclips.net/video/v2NykZHXXyw/видео.html
I ripped the audio of the Blu-ray and added that audio to the 4k version.
I still know what you did last summer on 4K was amazing
LOL 3D doesn't make anything more tolerable. Quite the opposite.
@@boneseyyl1060 Bonesey baby! 3D can be fantastic, if you know how to work it, or unless you're too cockeyed to appreciate it.
@@TheVid54 Yea bud it's a fun gimmick for about 5 mins and then it becomes annoying. The fact that nobody even mentions it anymore except you, pretty much says it all.
Great video!
I didn't think much of the picture quality of Matrix in 4K, l have the 1080p Bluray as well and did not think picture was better.
Looks quite dated now
The Atmos track is where it really shines. I love the sound.
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome
Not got Atmos, I only have 5.1 in my living room as its small space but sounds great just 5.1 setup
Great topic!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
The hateful eight needs a 4k release
Yes!!
I’ve made up for it after I got out on my own 😁. I’ve binge watched all the movies I missed as a kid. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video! FYI, do not buy Ex Machina 4K. It adds nothing to the quality of the movie.
If I have the bluray then I will never buy the 4k. I basically buy and watch a movie once and that's it. Haven't been to the theater since the early 80's
The Rock and Armageddon would be sick 😊
Someday. Someday 🙏
We need Clash of the Titans and Wrath of the Titans in 4k!
I have 4 of the 5 movies.
You’re Abe Froman…
The SAUSAGE KiNG of Chicago…
?
For me it would also be Goodfellas, Batman, Batman Returns, The Shining.
goodfellas is terrible as a 4k
@user-nh3hk9nb6d compared to others yeah, but it's still a big improvement on the blu ray.
I have watched edge of tomorow so many time- luv emily
The Last Samurai needs the 4k treatment!
Yes!
Armageddon! Please!
Oh you have a few favourite movies double??? pfft maybe I should make my own YT channel ...
I have thousands "favourite movies" triple as in BR + 3D + 4K
Stopped watching after he announced the first movie. Edge of tomorrow is a 4K upscale, not a native 4K. Amateur.
The Atmos track is what got it on this list. If you have an Atmos home theater I highly recommend you check it out. It’s 👍👍
4k upscake looks better then native 4k, and blu rat ate definitely better over all then 4k disc's except fir resolution, some times
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHomesaw it in theatre, loved to hear it was worth it in 4k, order a copy, thanks 🙏🏼
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHomefully agree
3D disc is the best way to watch it imo.
Please nobody is buying 4K. Sales are really down on that format. Also, you barely can tell the difference between 4K and Blu-ray.
I'll stick with Blu-ray.
Well some people are buying 4k 😉
Who is “nobody”?
