Idiocracy and Team America: Two Classic Comedies That Hit Close To Home

- When Idiocracy and Team America: World Police came out in 2006 and 2004, no one would have ever expected how prescient both films would turn out to be. Of the two, Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s Team America probably had the quickest impact, as it satirized global events that were taking place at the time, making it a lightning rod for controversy. However, it was also a pretty big box office hit. However, Mike Judge’s Idiocracy ended up buried by its home studio, 20th Century Fox (now owned by Disney), with it essentially going direct-to-DVD. Yet, in the years following its release, it picked up a major cult following due to how it predicted certain things that would eventually come to pass. In this compilation of two of our most popular episodes of WTF Happened to this Movie, we take a look at two cult classics that have stood the test of time for reasons no one could have predicted back then.

The studio execs realized Office Space and Idiocracy were about them.
Do you really think they got offended and thats why they sabotaged the movie's release? Fuk no , even if they did , theres no place for feelings in big businesses.
But their big affiliates did and pulled out and more were about to do the same , probably...Thats why they tried to bury the movie , nevermind that the director replaced all of the big franchises and their logo's' uniforms etc....yet they still decided to bury it out of fear.
PS : Except Costco...they dont give a fuk , it seems.
The Studios, Streamers & Networks have grown exponentially more absurd & idio-cratic themselves. I work in the content creation/production field, and would not work with any of those cok-sukers for all the tea in China... (but perhaps the Yen in China!) 🙃😉😊

The DVD menu at the beginning was “Ow my balls” on a loop. I was cracking up just to that.
Then I watched the movie and realized that maybe I was a little too close to the joke.
I watch whole Instagram videos of people getting hit in the balls and I have to admit it makes me laugh.

I got to meet Mike Judge and the production crew when they strolled into our office looking to rent some office space for the movie Office Space. I even had a couple lunch dates with a sweet blonde who picked out the background places outside the office such as the restaurant , bar at the hotel next to us and the driving background. The fire in the movie was right outside my window. Loved the movie and it really hit the spot of the tech world in Austin at the time.
I was working in an office. Little cubicals everywhere and to get to the smoking area you had to cut through this space. Im walking to meet up with my "crew". As a veteran and now a government contracted construction worker, I can say these videos are hilarious from the outside looking in, and horrifying working from the inside looking out.
Mike Judge has produced some of the most important movies and shows in cinematic and television history. Prophetic, prescient, and glued to the pulse of society and culture.
This guy has whispered inevitability into everybody who would watch and listen and by now, most of those have resigned themselves to his doomful visions.
And he's humble about it because any asshole should be able to tell how bad things were getting.
I was fortunate enough to see Office Space in the theater, and I had never laughed so much. I had to be careful while eating my popcorn!
I never heard of Idiocracy. In 2007-ish, a young colleague told me of it. I found a copy of it and never thought I could laugh so much at another movie, and I haven't. Whenever I need to laugh, I whip out my phone and watch it.
I eventually saw Team America around 2008. I'm still in recovery.
Jodie Foster said that if there was one movie that she thinks everyone should see in their lifetime, it's Team America. Both of these movies are beyond fantastic! Mike Judge, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are all geniuses(and not the breaded and fried kind). The opening scene in Team America is one of the most brilliant comedy scenes in the history of comedy. Opening with a marionette being controlled by a marionette is so simple but so brilliant.

One of my favorite memories is heading into the movies and watching everyone come out of another theater crying hysterically and we're thinking "WTF did they just watch!?!?" We were going in to laugh until crying while watching TEAM AMERICA. The movie those other folks were coming out of was "THE NOTEBOOK".
I saw Team America in theaters with 3 friends. Sophomore year we skipped school and got high as hell before the movie. To this day I don't think I've laughed harder in my life! Thank you to Matt Stone and Trey Parker for that experience. Legendary comedy

Ah long before NIL and even shortly before Spike Lee so greatly touched on the hypocrisy of the “purity” of college sports in “He Got Game” we all know Shaq was getting paid under the table at LSU 😜
Heck they even lampooned this in the first movie he did “Blue Chips”.
The guys who did Airplane and The Naked Gun series had the original idea for BASEketball, and absolutely wanted Trey and Matt as the main characters. They let Trey and Matt rewrite most of their lines.

Hey, what about King of the Hill? That was a huge Mike Judge hit.

Oh wow, this has been so helpful! I was finally able to put together the pieces that indicate I have been the victim of a Mandela Effect wormhole several years ago. I was growing more and more anxious as to why my recollections seemed to be wildly inaccurate. I was close to considering an intense course of theraputic analysis to attempt to identify the source of my psychosis.
You see, in the real world (I suppose I should get used to calling it the other world) Idiocracy was a slapstick success. Not as a cautionary tale, but as a satire on doomsayers who could ever declare that such foolishness might be the fate of humanity. In this world, I suspect the film suffered because of the anxiety audiences felt in finding the movie hilarious, but specifically for reasons the film was clealy mocking.
I can note one commonality between our two worlds. Apparently in both director Judge was approached concerning the feasibility of a sequel. And in both of them he replied "I don't see the point".
However, I think we can see a subtle distinction.
Idiocracy was not a movie; it was prophesy. Brought to you by Carl’s Jr.

Idiocracy is a documentary, and Team America is a reality TV show.
What you missed from this discussion several times is that Fox was contractually obligated to finance a Mike Judge live action feature as part of his deal to extend production of King of the Hill. Fox wasn't "waiting" for the movie with eager anticipation - they agreed to pay for it because King of the Hill was enormously profitable for the network. It wasn't that Beevis and Butthead was still popular - it was all about King of the Hill.
During the SAG strike last year, all i could think about was the Film Actors Guild. Which made me unable to take them seriously. lol
