If you are not intimidated by some disassembly work you can disconnect the negative battery terminal then remove the ESM unit. You can replace it with a new one (several hundred dollars) or try cleaning the circuit board on the inside. It seems complicated at first but it really is not that bad. The "gaps" on the circuit board inside the ESM get "streaked" with graphite residue over time and then it can't tell what gear it's in. Open it up and you'll see what I mean.
"The fix" is to confirm wiring/signal integrity (which he did), confirm confirm gear selector module power and grounds (which he did not, at least in the vid), and then if all those check out, replace the gear shift selector module with a new unit. Probably requires programming of the new unit too. I would also check for any related SIB's, or reflash possibilities, before replacement too.
Remember when a lever or cable was used to put vehicles in gear and they lasted forever, maybe replace a worn cable but those metal rods worked for centuries. too many electronic shifters with expensive problems.
Just the location of that Switch alone makes it look as if a spilled can of soda might wreak havoc on it. But then again Jeep Grand Cherokee isn't known for its superior design or durability(are they). Thanks for another great share Hiram.

I originally brought it to the Jeep dealership and was quoted approx. $700 for the repair. Since I had more time than money I did a little research and was able to perform the repair at home using a pencil eraser and conductive grease. That was two years ago, everything is still running smoothly. Am I just really lucky or can this repair be that easy?

My 2005 JGC Laredo is doing this, PRND all lit up, goes into limp mode every stop, change gears to N and back to D and sometimes works, sometimes have to do a quick restart lol , I have a appt at Jeep monday for them to read it. Is this something I can change myself? Think its the ECM that needs replacing?
I took the shifter box apart, and there is a computer chip/board in there and i took a qtip with a little rubbing alcohol and cleaned all the carbon off the strip. worked perfect! no more issues!!!
Hello: I have a 2000 G. Cherokee Laredo, I just made the transmission service (change oil, filter and gasket) before this the jeep was working just perfect, but right after the mechanic did it, the "engine light" came on it is not shifting correct. The scaner read say: 1 & 3 shift out of range and also pressure problem (something like that). The level in the stick show it is correct. I have the same Jeep GC. I can shift the automatic shifter down to lower gears (4, 3, 2, 1), but it will not shift back up to D until I put it in Neutral. can you help me I drove my 98 jeep grand Cherokee I dove about 10 miles everything was normal the transmission shifted great nice and smooth and on mark then on the way home I slow from 55 I stop at a light I accelerate again all of a sudden I can feel somethings not right the engine begins to reave lost so much power it slowly shifts at the 20 then again at 30 my take off is very slow compared to its normal get up and go I barely get it to 40 it will not go into overdrive at all and there is no check engine light it will still go into gear just fine reverse drive neutral all still work it just wont shift.

He did post the fix - he told you if you listen.... he said the shift control module is not responding to the signal so that is your problem. THE SHIFT CONTROL MODULE (ESM/Electronic Shift Module). There... you have it spelled out for you.

Hi and I have a 2006 jeep commander with the same problem, I took it to a shop and they replaced the ESM! And also the ECM! This fixed the problem for two days then it went back to the original problem, they switched out the parts again with new parts again and still after 2 days it went back to same issues. They sent the jeep to a second shop and they couldn't figure out the problem, finally I took it to the dealer and they couldn't figure out the problem, now here's the interesting part the jeep will start find in warm weather but once it gets a little cold it goes back to all the [P][R][N][D] being lit up and won't stay on for more then 1 second. I've recently discovered if I lock my doors and set the alarm then disconnect the positive battery terminal& wait about 30 seconds before reconnecting, it will trigger the alarm and then my jeep will start, please if anyone has any idea what's causing this, message me!
Went to the dealership today, and this code was pulled for my 2007 Grand Cherokee. The mechanic told me this code was "in memory" and not hard something..? what the hell did he mean by in memory? I'm a woman and wanted to get the hell out of there before I got pulled into spending money. so i didnt ask him. Help?
I have had the same issue not shifting into second or third etc, now at times it will not shift down when coming to a light, current mileage is 77K, the vehicle gives no indication it will no longer down shift you just find out in your own, if I turn the vehicle off and back on it works fine, this is the Electronic Shift module in the center console, NAPA sells it for $545, not sure what the dealer would want, however I have read even after being replaced they still fail, These Vehicles are just a POS and I will never ever purchase another one

Why are you using a piercing probe? Backprobing should be the only way if possible and your connector is right there
