The shepherds pie is very cool and relatively new dish believe it or not. It comes from the fusion of the British meat pies and the introduction of tomatoes and potatoes to Ireland from Mexico. Another gift that South America gave the world is the chili pepper. This happened around the 1500s. I think it’s a very natural and elegant fusion and really comforting in winter time.
I made this delish recipe and added two rashers of diced bacon to the minced lamb and roughly 3/4 cup of Parmesan to the mash potato and sprinkled a little more on top and it was so hearty and morish...first attempt at shepherd's pie too, so thank you for the inspo!
We grew up having this in my family also but it was a favourite of ours, no spring onions though. My all time favourite mash is simply mashed potatoes with a ton of cream cheese spread mashed through it.
A useful tip I discovered is to use a potato ricer if I was creamy potatoes with no lumps at all. For Patty's day, I like corned beef and cabbage. It's a special treat I make once a year.
mmmm spring onions in the mash sounds yum! Mom used to put mashed potatoes on the bottom & top, guess she had less meat to deal with. never used carrots, but with lamb instead of beef, I guess that would taste good. Thanks, I'll try your recipe - watching you always makes me hungry!
As a Welshman I would try it with leek instead of spring onions if I made it. Looks awesome though, nothing like a Shepherd's/Cottage pie when it's bucketing it down outside.
As an Irishman I would totally agree with you. Scallions are a poor substitute for leeks or cabbage for that matter. But then the Welsh and the Irish always get along.
Now a family favourite. I add some of that well known “browns, seasons and thickens all in one go” mixed with water to the mince. Also we need more potato to get proportions right.
Lamb mince is my favourite mince for spagbol or lasagne, its not as strong as beef but stronger than chicken or pork and the oilyness gives a really nice mouth feel.
I made this for St. Patrick's Day dinner. My family LOVED IT! It is a fabulous, very tasty dish, that I plan to make often now! Thank you for a wonderful recipe and video demonstration.
i made this last night! i used beef instead of lamb and i chucked in a diced red pepper as well - i also didn't have tomato puree or worcestershire sauce on hand, so i just put in a bit of ketchup and hoped for the best. it came out so well! i've actually never had shephard's pie before and i was shocked at how easy it was to make something so delicious. i will definitely be holding onto this recipe (and possibly making it again very soon). thanks so much!
My son sent me the URL for Donal Skehan and I've really enjoyed watching his videos. Am ready to do the Shepherd's Pie...we can all use some comfort - YES!
+Florayde Ken Bernardez The difference is that he doesn't have to worry about buying a new one ;-D And i don't think he is a chef, but i might be wrong
Stumbled upon this recipe four months too late! Lolz. Great recipe though..I love the sound of the creamy potatoes with the spring onions mixed in with them! 😊
I miss your old kitchen. Had so much more color and life. Sigh! I shall still be your loyal follower because I LOVE your recipes. So so easy and delicious
Big fan of Shepherd's Pie and this looks brilliant! Love the idea of throwing in spring onions into the mash. I love spring onions! Will try out this recipe soon! Nura, Singapore
" join the dollops "......got it ! I grew up eating Sheperds Pie in my youth, and I love making it for my family......love this recipe Donal, I will definitely be adding the green onion next time I make it. I live in Canada, but I come from an amazing clan of McCarthy's on my mother's side......we love to celebrate St. Patricks Day every year with good food, and maybe a drink or two :)
Yummmm. 😋. The potatoes are like Colcannon, I put chopped cooked cabbage in them and/or kale along with the spring onions. ILL try your way first though, lol then next time I'll add Colcannon on top. Hope your having easy time finding place to live here in Calif. 😊. and you and Sofie getting used to things . Love your channel!
You could make this with colcannon, which is mashed potato with cabbage and spring onion. I've tried colcannon in O'Neill's, an Irish-themed pub in the UK and it was lovely.
hi donal, i really enjoy your videos! i watched grandma's boy on natgeo and tried to search for more information about you since then, and i found your youtube channel! great!! i go to cooking school yeah it's a vocational high school and you really inspiring me. i hope i can be a great chef just like you! and i'll save some money from my allowance to buy your book lol thank you donal wish you the best!!
Yummy. I love shepherds pie, i use vegie mince as i am vegetarian but i will totally make this with the addition of the thyme and stock usually i just sweat off carrots and onion then add the mince and sauces i bet this will make it even more tasty. Totally love the idea of using spring onions on the mash too! Stealing that idea. Thanks Donal! If you are sick as it sounds then i hope you get better :)
I've never had a good shepherds pie here in America. I think they use ground beef. I love lamb and I'm pretty sure that's the difference maker. Definitely something I need to try making at home
A lot of groceries don't stock lamb on the regular. My gran used to make lamb for Sunday dinner and would chop up the leftovers for shepherds pie on Monday. Looks delicious Donal!
Thanks for the video, it was extremely helpful! I want (very much) to make cottage pie for St. Patty's Day and have watched dozens of videos on it. I decided to use yours for our basic recipe and have now made our own version of it several times. We LOVE it!!!
yay a simplified version of Shepards pie. I plan on making your lamb stew recipe again this year for st.patricks day but I will definitely make this once our local farmers market opens up. we have a fantastic lamb farmer that comes. :)
Just made this with 50% pork and 50% beef (no lamb at the store) and it turned out amazing. Although I did tweak it and added a mix of cheddar and mozarella cheese to the mash =)
my god that looks good, will be making that all right !! On St. Paddy's Day I'll be wearing a green & orange scarf thrown across the shoulders of a white top (comfy jeans of course) and heading to the centre of Belfast to see the parade...have a good one yourself Donal & Co :)
As always, brilliant dish and brilliant video! Lamb mince needs no draining like beef? Does it come in different %s like beef? I love the mash. Last year I added parsnips. Great again, Donal!
I've made a shepherd's pie with turkey before and it tasted just as good. I cut red meat out of my diet in 2009 and my heart health is the better for it with all the seafood I eat as a result of that decision.
This is an international dish, as a very similar recipe exists in Portugal and it is so delicious. But I still have not yet had the opportunity to taste a Shepherd's Pie in both Britain and Ireland.Donald: some place you would recommend to eat it??? Thanks and best regards,S.
This is probably a very random question - but what kind of oven is that in the background? Size wise it is exactly what I'm looking for. Top recipe by the way! 😀
Hi Donal, where's the Champ? You kept saying Mashed potato but I thought it was supposed to be Champ/Rutebega? Did I miss something?Looks Great either way! Happy St.Pat's!!! I'm half Irish too:) Thanks
I'm getting in the mood this year with corned beef and cabbage. I love the salty brine flavor of corned beef. The pickling spices are great. I don't know if we make it anywhere near how the Irish make it. We Americanize everything it seems like. How do you make it?
Just double, triple or however much you need, I'm big into batch cooking as so busy during week but want to ensure I have a home cooked meal after work so I batch cook alot at the weekends! :)
+IrishCol1only Thank you for taking the time to reply. One other question how long can you store? And where,I am a student in the cooking world, and learning every day new ideas. Thank you.
Hallo! New subscriber here. Shepherd's pie is one of my favorites, I'm looking forward to trying this recipe. I have a question for you - how often do you use your cast iron skillet, and primarily for what? My nan uses hers mostly for cornbread (southern USA), and my mother (England) never had one. I have a cast iron skillet now, but I don't know when to use it! Thank you!
I have several, use them for just about everything (except eggs over easy: without a lot of fat in the pan eggs stick). Great for starting stovetop and finishing in the oven; absolutely necessary for browning meat. Don't pay attention to folks (even chefs!) saying never to wash them, just be sure to dry thoroughly and re-season the pan; eventually you will still get that lovely blackness that old pans have.
Hi I have a question, on your website the recipes list of ingredients says 400ml of beef stock twice, is that a misprint or is it actually 800ml? I'm getting ready to make this right now so if anyone knows please let me know. Thank you! 😀 from Washington state USA 👏😀🤓
Brother I’m still making this to this day because it’s the best shepherds pie recipe I’ve ever made. Ps, you look 20 here so seeing you with gray hair is insane lol
I know what we are having for dinner! Donal do you think I could do it for veal or would that cook too fast and become had and chewy? I'm also planning to use Gochujang in place of the tomato purée; I think that will work.
"Go on home, you shouldn't even bother" hahaha, oh my god , i love it
I probably finish the mashed potato before I can spread it into the meat
Didn't you want him to stick the spoon in his mouth? Hehe!
Nubianette At first I read "Didn't you want him to stick the spoon in your mouth" What's wrong with me
😂
Someones turned on by cooking

Awesome recipe the family here in Australia loved it ....no left overs here!!!
Where's the recipe, I can't find it?🤔
Amaaaazing simple recipe, thank you Donal!
So many ways to make this 'pie', all wonderful and delicious!
I made this delish recipe and added two rashers of diced bacon to the minced lamb and roughly 3/4 cup of Parmesan to the mash potato and sprinkled a little more on top and it was so hearty and morish...first attempt at shepherd's pie too, so thank you for the inspo!
+Stephanie Louise yay so glad you liked it!
This just became my go-to Shepherd's Pie recipe, looks scrumptious!
You cant beat a good shepherds pie.... so yummy, thanks Donal!!
I just made this and paired it with a side salad of arugula and parmesan with olive oil and lemon juice dressing omggg best dinner everrrr
We grew up having this in my family also but it was a favourite of ours, no spring onions though. My all time favourite mash is simply mashed potatoes with a ton of cream cheese spread mashed through it.

The champ is a great addition. Good lad yourself Donal!

It does look good. I've not made Shepherd's Pie with lamb. AND I do like Champ, so this is a win.
Lamb mince is my favourite mince for spagbol or lasagne, its not as strong as beef but stronger than chicken or pork and the oilyness gives a really nice mouth feel.
The background gives me lots of imagination.Just like cook in a woods.Yum yum
I made this for St. Patrick's Day dinner. My family LOVED IT! It is a fabulous, very tasty dish, that I plan to make often now! Thank you for a wonderful recipe and video demonstration.
Grew up on this too, in Northern Ireland! The champ on the top was how my gran made it! Beautiful memories, thanks so much! Scotch broth next?😎🇨🇦🇬🇧

that's so cool. Hope you like the shepherds pie :)
and I, like you.
did anyone else also freak out when he was mashing the potatoes in the non stick pan....all i could think was that his saucepan will get scratches!
+Omgilovefandoms Yes! lol
👍
The difference is that, he's a chef and you're probably not.
+Florayde Ken Bernardez Just a question, not trying to be rude, but what does that have to do with anything?
+Florayde Ken Bernardez The difference is that he doesn't have to worry about buying a new one ;-D And i don't think he is a chef, but i might be wrong
my mother sometimes mashes up turnip with her potatoes and it's so good on shepherds pies!
you missed the opportunity to say that "the thyme has served it's time" but still a great video :)
nano15j that’s funny
This comment is crucial to this video .....love it😉
I grew up on this too as my Grandpa was Irish.
Donal, those spring onions seem to make the difference in your recipe. I will have a try. Definitely!
Damn Donal, back at it again with the delicious recipes !! Thank you so much.
Stumbled upon this recipe four months too late! Lolz. Great recipe though..I love the sound of the creamy potatoes with the spring onions mixed in with them! 😊

Love Shepherd's pie and all things Irish :)
You could make this with colcannon, which is mashed potato with cabbage and spring onion. I've tried colcannon in O'Neill's, an Irish-themed pub in the UK and it was lovely.
Thank you, April, I was wondering if Colcannon was acceptable. Isn't it made with kale instead of head-cabbage, though?
+Keet Randling I'm not sure. Maybe it can be made with any sort of cabbage.
hi donal, i really enjoy your videos! i watched grandma's boy on natgeo and tried to search for more information about you since then, and i found your youtube channel! great!! i go to cooking school yeah it's a vocational high school and you really inspiring me. i hope i can be a great chef just like you! and i'll save some money from my allowance to buy your book lol thank you donal wish you the best!!
I use Guinness with the stock to add more depth of flavor.
OMG your killing with this.. Yum yum .. I'm try this tomorrow .. thank you
a touch of mustard seeds in the mash and a nice homemade coleslaw on the side is always welcome :3
I would love to learn about more Irish dishes.
Yummy. I love shepherds pie, i use vegie mince as i am vegetarian but i will totally make this with the addition of the thyme and stock usually i just sweat off carrots and onion then add the mince and sauces i bet this will make it even more tasty.

it's so delish when it's done right :)
A lot of groceries don't stock lamb on the regular. My gran used to make lamb for Sunday dinner and would chop up the leftovers for shepherds pie on Monday. Looks delicious Donal!
I don't know if they dothat in ireland too, but if you make mashed potatoes, put a little bit of nutmeg in there, it makes such a difference
That's one of the funniest ways I've ever heard someone pronounce "Worcestershire sauce😂😂"Worcestershireshire"😂 love it!
I'll will be trying that definitely and love your videos by the way ☺

I could watch these just cause I find the accent so nice and interesting, but the recipes are lovely too, so wiin-win.
i make my shepherd's pie a bit different. i use mashed sweet potatoes (i can't have regular potatoes). it is different, but super yummy!
Have to make this tonight! Can't wait for Thursday to chow down on this.
Made this last week and it was delicious!!!!
my god that looks good, will be making that all right !! On St. Paddy's Day I'll be wearing a green & orange scarf thrown across the shoulders of a white top (comfy jeans of course) and heading to the centre of Belfast to see the parade...have a good one yourself Donal & Co :)

Looks so very tasty!
Looks so good! I'll have to try this soon!
Wow. Yum. That looks amazing.
This is probably a very random question - but what kind of oven is that in the background? Size wise it is exactly what I'm looking for. Top recipe by the way! 😀
I've been looking for a pan like that!
Looks great!! - One small tip, if you are into creamy mash really recommend using sour cream instead of milk its fab!
Hi Donal, where's the Champ? You kept saying Mashed potato but I thought it was supposed to be Champ/Rutebega? Did I miss something?Looks Great either way! Happy St.Pat's!!! I'm half Irish too:) Thanks
Though I've always had beef sheperd's pie, I will try to make it with lamb. Looked delicious!!!
beef shepherds pie is called cottage pie..... shepherds do not herd cattle.
I'm getting in the mood this year with corned beef and cabbage. I love the salty brine flavor of corned beef. The pickling spices are great. I don't know if we make it anywhere near how the Irish make it. We Americanize everything it seems like. How do you make it?
