Great to hear Eve’s original thinking on AI. Highly recommend her book ‘Robot Souls’.

Really interesting ideas about robots, free will and the role of story, and like the best stories, an unexpected end! I'd definitely recommend a look.

Fascinating look at an incredibly complex set of issues - thinking through both what makes us human (intuition, conscience, uncertainty, making meaning and storytelling) and where AI is lacking. Eve's curious mind, interesting academic and professional career and storytelling ability all bring so much to help us find ways to consider all of this complexity without being overwhelmed. This includes a reminder to look at science fiction to help think through how this might all end, as well as to use our agency to prevent it from being a tragic end! Looking forward to reading Robot Souls to find out more!

For those of you using my TEDx in class or in chapel, I've added some discussion questions:
    1. What do you think consciousness is?
    2. What do you think free will is?
    3. What 'junk' code do you treasure?
    4. How do you think this story will end?
    5. Would you hug that robot?

Emotions - principally emotions - but also intuition, uncertainty, conscience, meaning-making and storytelling. These are the junk code that makes us human and that keeps AI artificial. Eve Poole weaves her compelling magic here - well worth a listen, or better still a read of Robot Souls.
