Graven early access has arrived! Is it looking like the HeXen 3 we never got? Or did this retro fps hit early access too soon? Find out in this Graven review.
Steam key provided by publisher.
Graven is a game I've been excited for since it was first announced. A boomer shooter that harkens back to classics like Heretic, Hexen and Hexen 2 but also incorporates elements of immersive sims and action rpg s. Now this gorgeously modern retro game has come to early access and is looking to give us a retro fps experience unlike any other. Is Graven the HeXen game we never got? Is this early access build worth the plunge? Find out in this Graven Review.
Graven is being developed by Slipgate Ironworks and published by 1C Entertainment and 3D Realms. It is currently available through Steam early access and is slated for release on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X.

I actually did try playing it but somewhere in between like right after the boat ride the performance just tanked so i'm gonna wait for a more stable build of the game.
Wow, I thought Hexen 2.0 as soon as the video started !
If only ID Software would give Hexen a Doom level reboot.
The game looks promising but I think I will wait for them to finish it haha
see you in another 2 years then
is it possible for you to review the Conflict desert strom series? they get almost no recognition and it would be awesome to see a actual review of the games, please do consider it!
Ey thanks for reminding me of this. Now I remember :D
THat whole series was so cool. 4 player splitscreen co op on the xbox, hell yeah.
Ayyy nice video, glad to know I wasn't the only one that got stumped on the totem pole puzzle. Tbf though, it makes you feel really smart when you do figure it out
Thanks for the honest take, big heretic hexen fan and been interested but it looks too raw for my taste yet, it’s gonna be gooood it seems fully cooked.
This looks excellent ! Looking forward to this
Food for thought: You gave it much more words of praise than other people I saw. Other people spent more time negatively describing the gameplay than the feel of the game like you did. I am surprised you didn't compare and contrast it more to Hexen in the gameplay aspect. I am happy to hear it is a bit more straightforward than some of the Hexen games. After a few hours I was completely lost where to go in each of those games. From what I hear the quests make this easier to digest and understand where to go.
This looks really cool, but I totally agree with you that I'd love way more in-depth combat variety and ways to experiment before feeling like it's a game I want to sink a lot of time into.
This game is ripe for a flame thrower weapon!
Agreed!
I'll definitely buy it when it's around 50% complete , I hope they are able to make the game reach it's full potential .
Smart choice and same. I have a feeling they're gonna nail it.
@@KIRKCOLLECTS Can you make posts on discord whenever the game gets a major update so that I can know when to buy it .
@@Robocop_1987 For sure, I'm planning on covering major updates in videos too.
Ill buy it when its about 100% complete
Been waiting for someone to cover this game, I have been very excited for this since the demo but ill probably for a few months due to amount of content there is now.
I like to think of my Discharge as a magic spell too but everyone else just calls it gonorrhea
Stay away from me 🤢
EA teaser was fine, a bit short, but fine...
Though... The mindless enemy AI, how game keeps track of the progress, killed enemies, enemies respawns, checkpoints - these parts need quite a bit of polishing...
some specific pros/cons:
Cons:
- If you are out of an aggro range, the enemies will simply soak ranged projectiles until they die (they won't even try to run at you)
- Ammo for most weapons (even the stronger ones) is pretty common - Unfortunately during my playthrough, I have only died due to my carelessness (blowin myself up) - rather than due to the combat itself
- You can just mindlessly smash everything you see to get gold and buy nearly every weapon pretty early on - which makes the game way too easy - also no NPC seems to care, that you act like a lunatic, blow up/ smash every crate/barrel/pile of bodies in the town. "🤷♀️ just another monday, am I right?"
- Dying is of no significance (at least for now)
Pros:
- compelling story setting (there is not much story of a yet, but I dig the story setting)
- atmoshpere
- controls (mouse and keyboard ofc)
- interesting weapon arsenal
- atmoshpere!
- graphics (arguably), low pixel and polygon aesthetics with nice shaders and lighting have its charm
- atmoshpere!!!
This looks pretty cool. Might have to check it out on release
Doombringer review when?
I would like some more physical ability in the game, the thing i found most attractive about hexen was that some of the combat took with physical events such as freezing, and putting in a multiplayer space and with some duke nukem style action, its a really good game
Great video, and I agree with your statements. Maybe this game is asking to become more of a immmersive sim than the devs thought. It needs more variety and depth to the combat, exploration and puzzle mechanics.
I really want a game like this or Wrath Aeon of Ruin but set in the Elder Scrolls universe.
We all do but Todd Howard and his team are bunch of greedy lifeless money lovers that don't care about making a masterpiece. I hope one day they lose or sell rights to the elder scrolls so someone who actually loves the lore makes a title worthy of the fans. I honestly as a fan of the series ( lorewise ) don't have high hopes considering the sixth enstalment, but we will see. Gods be praised
@@windbag8900 They are not greedy, trust me when I say that they just stop making a game right as it hits the good enough for launch line.
They're lazy. Bethesda already makes money out the ass and the majority of people only buy Fallout because its a brand with a cute mascot.
i will 100% be checking this out when co op comes. that sounds awesome.
(and you should check out barony, i think you'd like it and such a great game deserves more exposure)
ive been waiting for this one im def gana buy it
Can the player move vertically? One thing I loved about some of those old games was the ability to explore upward. This looks like an amazing game and really brings back some nostalgia. Hope it does well on release....
As I mentioned in my review, I don't think the game is worth the money in its current state. Like I'm glad the patch addressed some things but again, the content is 67% demo and 33%new stuff. 1C really has an issue with putting games into EA too early, see Wrath, but as they have shown with Wrath they will eventually turn them into quality content. I just feel like hardly adding any content to the initial EA and charging people $25 will only put some people off from a game that they would otherwise love if they got to play with more of the content.
Retro and slightly downgraded graphics are the way to go. So easy to run on modern tech and they can be cleaned up so nicely!!! I LOVE IT!
They should add different classes to Graven like they did in Hexen, would add lots of replay value
These guys needs a full pledged budget to flesh this game out !
The spells should behave like plasmids in bioshock. That would fix most of the issues with spells
Sewers and forests? Im so fucking in.
Hey I was wondering, did you play the ultrakill update? the one with the Perfect door
14:17 Nice caustics.
Also the color contrast is just fantastic
Oh for sure, superb.
I still have faith to all developers on all EA-Titles.
early! didnt know this was out.. looks like im spunking some of my wages on that :)
It's not out. It's in early access.
@@sunburst8810 🤣 thanks for the heads up there fam
I understand the game is not final yet, and is short on content. It's early access so this is something I expected. But my concerns came from the fact the demo was more enjoyable than this version. It felt like some mechanics were cutted down or glitched.
I'm so glad you covered this, it seems so promising I'm sad it's getting so many negative reviews due to early access issues
👊🏼💪🏻🔥
I’m dying for more games like this. Ive been playing Arthurian Legends a TON lately, and i need more. Any recommendations?
Will you make a video about Doombringer? Don't know what I should think of it. Looks good and bad at the same time
I hope they add spirt enemies green/purple/blue/red (ghostly 👻 apparitions) liches that rsise the dead
Amid evil videogame is way more hexeny than graven. I consider amid evil being "hexen 3".
What does full localization mean?
Multiplayer pvp deathmatch please !!!
This whole trend of early access is so stupid. Its like hey here's skyrim but all you can do is visit the first village. Be sure to give a positive rating so it doesn't deter others from buying, even though you've only been given a tiny slice of our game!
It's just like a Demo!
A properly made Early Access game is a good thing!
* It's priced way lower that the finished game
* It has all ESSENTIAL features of the game
* It has a Roadmap
* It has no publisher - YOU are the publisher!
Reminds me of hexen
Until you see all the NPCs.
This will be an excellent Steam Deck game.
Which of Unreal Engine this game running on?
Hope they add more spiky stuff to kick bad guys into. Dark Messiah feels.
So, it's now October 31st 2021 and there still is no co-op in the game. It doesn't seem like it's made a whole lot of progress since this review. I added it to my watch list and will keep an eye on it as it is exactly the kinda game I love. I'd really love to see someone keep the Heretic and Hexen games going. Though this to me seems more like if Quake and Hexen had a kid :)
you are delusional if you think coop can be introduced to the game this quick, they are struggling to put in 1/3 of 1/3 of the game
@@aoetje474 dunno, game seems pretty damn done to me. You'd >think< they'd have made co-op part of the bedrock of the game instead of some janky add-on when everything is done. Just look how well that worked for DOOM back in the day (hint: it was garbage). So sorry to expect more from a modern game, sorry to expect it to be done smartly.
@@gotindrachenhart doing any form of multiplayer in the game is the hardest part and graven cant even release 1/3 of 1/3 of the game
@@aoetje474 I haven't been following the development so I can't comment on them as a dev team. My point was that it's better to make a game as multiplayer from the start.
to be like hexen needs multiplayer...
I have already been burned by a few early access games. Some of them are perpetual early access. They have been in early access since 2015. I wait for finished games.
"Graven," hehe; it's like "Raven." Hmm... remember when Raven Software made good games?
😥yeah
It's odd, generally speaking this is right up my alley - I love this recent revival of oldschool shooter design sensibilities - but for whatever reason, something about this one is just... off to me. Like there's something missing to make the atmosphere coherent. I can't seem to be able to put my finger on just why that is, but it's not clicking for me.
2023 and the game still isn't fully released ;-;
I wishlisted the game start playing, I was so excited after 30 min. I just start skipping enemies because i do same thing over and over like you said Fire spell have almost no damage to them and hitting everything with staff sometimes with crossbow was bit boring then their respawn system... there is no punishment in it, you could just run be chased by 20 enemies you get checkpoint after you die and they vanished... so after 1 hour i just quit them game (after lighhouse quest) because i don't know to be honest where to go next and was so disappointed. This game could be way better. And Inventory in the game have no point everything is on Action bars
Every adventurer need a basic wack stick lol 😆 🤣
The game looks beautiful, but the current gameplay consists of hitting barrels, zombies and crates with a stick, and the save system is an absolute travesty. I really hope they will completely revamp the game, because at this stage, it's a frozen pizza after 3 minutes in the oven.
me when I played this.
"a flamethrower spell, hellyer!
oh ooh.. not an offensive evocation.. sure.. ok.."
...
..
"lightning bolt!!! f*ck yer! fry motherf*ckers!
WHAT!! it just stuns them... ok, I am out..
back to Dark messiah .. I guess."
where is mah Tome off powa :P
How does this look way better than my overhyped ass thought it first looked?
Hype knows no bounds!
Daikatana 1999 gamelike
This game looks like a dumpster fire. My confidence in 3D and 1C is seriously shaken, like when the hell will Wrath be finished?
what this free onw ny no a game exist own me publication a have the proplem.....tx
I'm done with these early access fps games. None of them are ever finished. Trepang, Maximum Action, Get to the Orange Door, Ultra kill, Prodeus seriously the list goes on FOREVER. At this point they seem more like student projects so they can get a real job instead of games that will be finished. It's a joke
Hell yea, to me this looks like a gothic mix of thief and hexen
Pretty much, actually the way the NPCs look reminds me a lot of Thief.
Stop turning me on yall
