- Remember the classic Hexen from the 90s? Slipgate Ironworks brings the old formula back to life, modernised with the latest tech from Unreal Engine 4. John Linneman and Alex Battaglia are massive fans of the original - so does this spiritual successor hit the mark?

*I just want them to reboot Hexen!* 🙂
Honestly, maybe I'm getting older but I am more excited about stuff like Graven than any next gen game.
Me too, last time was excited when Ion Fury came out from early access and Wrath was announced.
Look at what next gen games are coming out: CoD and Assassins Creed. What's even the point any more? Nothing new has come out in ages.
@@TheAxebeard Death stranding man it is new game in everyway
@@كابامارو-ذ8ر Oh yeah
I dont think its related to age. Modern games are so samey and boring. All graphics and a huge yet hollow gameplay area is all they have to offer.
Hexen 2 is one of my most beloved games of all time.
They call him John "moist whack" Linneman.
This comment needs more thumbs up lol 8:34
That's not an image I want to have in my brain.
Alex and John keep me coming back every single day for these obscure first-looks because they feel like two guys I grew up with in high school and college. Very driven to unpack the artistry of something, and they aren't snobbish about it at all.
You guys have quietly become my favorite channel on the whole platform. My wife has even started to get into watching your content.
This looks promising. I was a fan of both Hexen and Heretic back in the day.
I was a Forsaken guy. Different beat but to me hose three - along with Doom, Quake and Durandal/Marathon - are pretty emblematic of 90s PC shooters.
And Duke Nukem, lol
@@oneandonlyjark Lol. Yeah. One must never forget the greatest that was Duke Nukem 3D. 😁
@TheVoiceOfTruth
For that to happen, somebody needs to get rid of Activision first. Either they sell their rights to ID or they let Raven create their independent IPs once more.
Who doesn't like a "moist whack" I always say.
hadnt even heard of this. loved heretic and hexen back in ye olde days.
@Z3U5 that would be great. i just got game pass for pc not long ago.
Hexen or heretic, not sure which one, but one of those games was the first game I got so stuck in that I had my first rage quit.
Apart from the 1st person perspective, this level design and enemies remind me of "Drakan: Order of the flame".
wonderful to meet someone else who knows this game. no other Game has ever played like Drakan did since then.
I loved that game and would really treasure some way to play it with my daughter.
@@SteveAkaDarktimes , I guess it's time for Digital foundry to revisit "Drakan: Order of the flame" ;) (hint, hint)
That game was so cool back in 99 because you could ride a dragon. I remember it being buggy as hell though.
Yep, great game.
Don't make fun of Cyclones! It was the very first game that recommended WASD controls.
@TheVoiceOfTruth No, it didn't. There weren't any "strafe left" or "strafe right" keys to be bound. And mouse was for turning and moving forward and backwards.
Man do I love 90s-era pc gaming
When this video started I was going to go nuts if they didn't mention Amid Evil.
Thanks for stopping me getting ahead of myself :P.
They didn't mention Dusk.
Boo.
Amid Evil was great
@@RetroTuna I bought it during the steam summer sale, but I just beat Ion Fury yesterday so now I started Amid Evil. The lighting and reflections are so cool. Each weapon is awesome and serves it's own purpose. Can't wait to really sink my teeth in.
SupremeCowJumper I finished it over Christmas it’s a fair size game with some huge levels really enjoyed it well worth playing
Man i love hexen and heretic so much... really looking forword to it...
Its a really interesting look, its fun to see it with modern effects but still have these unfiltered textures
check out amid evil for more stuff like that
I really love the aesthetic of this
"It's like a moist wack. There's something satisfying about that." Yes I agree
more like moist wack off am i rite
I've never heard of Hexen, but this he looks right up my alley.
@@metanumia no you cant
No post processing? Bloom, motion blur, layered fog, corpuscular rays...
No chromatic abomination, no money...!
@@daktaklakpak5059 dont forget about lens flare
There is motion blur
Cool to see these guys appreciate the classics
You had me at Hexen. I *heart* the first Hexen so much. I'm glad we seem to finally be getting a successor. (We don't talk about Hexen 2)
I personally adore games that have an old school look them while playing like a modern game. This, Core Decay and System Shock are my most anticipated releases.
They've nailed it with the design. It looks like what I imagined games would look like.
Love HeXeN 2 music in background:>
I can hear Civvie coming
A man of culture.
and GGGManlives, Ranton...
I hope so!
And Mandalore !
Thanks for letting me know about this game. I really enjoyed Hexen demos back in the day, but never actually got to play the full release. I'm going to try to get a copy of Hexen 1 & II in anticipation for this game.
This looks freaking fantastic!
It's incredible how low res everything in this game is, but you only notice it when standing right in front of it.. So crazy, very impressive!
Never heard of Hexen before.. But this looks really good. I absolutely love the graphic style here, great lighting, and those low poly models, with pixelated textures look good and stylized... Refreshing in many ways!
I've never played Hexen but this looks right up my alley, definitely going to check this out. Love the retro/modern fusion art style
"Boomer Shooter"... Yes. we like!
lmao that's a perfect description of these kinds of games
@@totty2524 how? The youngest boomers would've been at least 30 years old back then. Maybe baby boomers built these games, but so did Generation X (who would've been rookies back then), and Gen X likely played them more.
@@oneandonlyjark Of course it's not perfect, it just sounds good.
@@oneandonlyjark I don’t get it either I have 12 year old kids calling me a boomer all the time I’m (42) go figure ?
Millennial shooter :/ you act like the N64 came out in 1962. Gen Z is so dumb. Fortnite, Fortnite, Minecraft, Slenderman, there was other R6 games?
Reminds me a lot of Compound, an aesthetic I really welcome. Definitely a cool way to do an old school throwback style of game
Hey Reeesetera, now how you like them apples!?
Nice
I used to love the Hexen / Heretic franchise. As far as I know Heretic II originated the fast paced Mouse+Keyboard combo in third person action adventures later on also used in Drakan, Heavy Metal FAKK 2, Rune and American McGee's Alice.
Before that, third person action adventure games on PC always used tank controls (like in Tomb Raider, Asghan Dragon Slayer and Prince of Persia 3D).
When I saw Graven vid, I turned into virgin. I was so excited, that's something unbelievable for my age.
I've only just finally got my hands on Hexen for the ps1, now they're making a spiritual successor?! Slow down!
why would you play that on ps1 as opposed to the dos version or even one of the many great source ports?
As I scrolled past, the colour pallet looked like Soul Reaver and for a fraction of a second, I was giddy with excitement.
One day, we'll get something...I hope
Hexen was the first game that I played when I got my N64 back in the days and I still play that game, so this will be a must play for me.
This is so promising, its making me wish of more games like these to come out. American McGee can definitely do the same thing if he ever wanted to make a remastered version of Alice (not Madness Return but the first game).
These boomer shooter games are a welcome sight! How about getting a unreal tournament remake for modern gamers.
We had that... Epic killed their own project off and moved all the guys onto Fortnite.
And U2XMP!!!
(Unreal 2 eXpanded MultiPlayer)
@@zedsdeadbaby yeah, truly a shame.
Really cool game, I feel like the screen motion blur doesn't really fit in with the aesthetic though, I'm sure you can disable it though.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was optional. I think I turn it off of nearly every game that has it lol
This game looks absolutely gorgeous. Creating low-res textures that actually look good is an art onto itself and it's clear these guys have a good handle on how to marry this style to modern lighting effects.
If it plays as well as it looks, this has the makings of being a contender to join the holy trinity of modern 'retro' FPS: Dusk, Amid Evil and Ion Fury. There some other good ones that have come out, but these are the three that really stood out from the rest for me.
Also glad to hear another shout-out to Wrath: Aeon of Ruin. That's another game that looks very promising and I can't wait to see its final release.
Then there's Gloomwood and Ultrakill also in the works... happy days 😄
I was literally thinking this should happen last week!
I really enjoyed Hexen 2. It was also the first game I played when I added another 3dfx card for SLI at the time. It looked amazing and played great.
Looking good - added to my Steam's wishlist!
I loved playing Hexen, so i hope this one turns out well. I love the look though, using actual modern tech and lighting but emulating oldschool texture work and effects.
Graphically looks gorgeous, however the gameplay looks not that exciting. I hope to see more weapons and more varied enemies.
hexen is the first fps i ever finished and i still think it's in my top 3. i remember it foundly and i have finished it multiple times over the years.
i love doom, but at the time i only finished the first episode in orders. the other ones and doom 2 i'd just jump into a map and play around with a pistol start. first time i finished both doom games from start to finish was in 2011!
Has a really unique look.... i like it.
Wow! Played the hell out of Hexen and Heretic on my old gateway pc!
It’s the age of boomer shooters! Thanks Civvie
Nightdive did a lot more work than him.
@@trblemayker5157 Technically of course, but Civvie popularized just term and made it look cool even for youngers gamers. More popular = more money = devs working on good quality retro games.
@@senorcandybares9686 Then gmanlives did it way before him.
@@trblemayker5157 I like gmanlives, but he's doing reviews - nice ones, but briefly. Civvie is making full walktrough combined with history of making game, some background about authors. Besides gmanlives has only jokes about "your mother", Civvie has more invention xD Also, Civvie is focused on retro shooters topic.
@@senorcandybares9686 Civvie is more of a whiner than anything else. Maybe because he's American and I'm the same age as him lol
I loved the Demo
Cant wait for the release!
Looks like a lot of fun. Will keep an eye on it. Or maybe two eyes...
Love the art style
This graven some what reminds me of a Painkiller & serious sam 2 mix for atmosphere & colors.
Definitely want my hands on this when it's out.
These unfiltered textures with UE4 lighting effects reminds me of Octopath Traveller. Very cool!
The overall look also reminds me of Ziggurat, although it's more retro
Glad to hear someone knows Ziggurat around here! :)
Now imagine this game with RTX on!
Moist whacking is my favourite kind of whacking. I'll definitely be picking this up.
Lighting is one of the areas I think retro games or modern retro/style games get a really cool benefit. Amid Evils RTX or some of that new FPS that's like Hotline Miami come to mind. Or minecraft RTX!! Love the way that looks. Like the pixels are a real thing lol.
Looks awesome.
Ah cool. I never got into hexen. This looks neat
The Alex & John bromance is evolving.
I _LOVE_ this look.
After falling in love with AMIDEVIL this looks a little timid
I really dig the look EXCEPT for the low-res font. Would be nice to have an option for that to be the same as render resolution. Was one of the more frustrating parts of these classic games is, just the struggling to decode the low-res text and figure out what the dev's wanted me to read. Aesthetics shouldn't hamper intelligibility.
This looks cool. Added it to my steam wish list.
Thank goodness. I need this.
My eyes hurt from the motion blur
I don't know why anyone would play a game with motion blur, it looks better than it used to, but it ruins the look of the game when everything smears together every time you turn.
In an old school first person game it looks particularly unnatural.
@@coolbrotherf127 For me it's less about the looks and more about how it genuinely puts a strain on my eyes and I have to look away. Same deal with chromatic aberration.
Motion blur doesn't fit such a gameplay AT ALL. Makes me sick. Maybe it's retro in terms of playing on some passive matrix display??
Everything NewBlood & 3dRealms have been putting out lately have been like an extended childhood for me.
Thank you for putting this into better words than I ever could have.
Also Digital Devolver. Best publisher than EA, imo
hexen was amazing for its time. This is great
WHODATHUNKIT! A game doesn't need to look photorealistic to be cool and fun to play!
I love the art style. I think far too many games still choose hyper realism, when an aesthetic like this much better fits the game they are trying to portray
This looks so good!
Oh man... I remember playing hexen on N64.
Cant wait for modders to make this look evenr more Fantastic.
we need a proper Hexen 3, Heretic 3, Redneck Rampage 2, Kingping 2, Blood 3, Strife 2, Turok 4, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic 2, Requiem 2, Quake 5 (Single Player sequel to Quake 4 or Quake 1), Jedi Knight 4, Unreal 3, Marathon 3, Techwar 2, Last Rites 2...
Partially agree.
@@alexbogl7358
why partially?
I don't know what it is with me, I build a decent gaming rig that can play most of the latest games but I end up playing mostly indie games lol, I do this almost every time I upgrade my rig lol.
I probably say about 80% of games I play are games that would run fine on the Nintendo Switch but still it's always nice to have the option to play the big hitter titles that pushes the hardware much harder.
This looks awesome.
I'd love it if the original Unreal games got a remake or remaster with this style of updated graphics but original models
I like the QUAKE 1 style fire in the torches and the purple flasks... this is definitely HEXEN/HERETIC related. lol
5:50 immediate desire to see modern Dungeon Keeper
Check out "war for the overworld"
This looks great!
I remember Hexen was my crysis at the time because my poor 386 was not having any of it. The game refuse to run this beast of a game.
I am probably too old but i am more excited with this old school flavored game than modern games
This is a retro case were I actually want texture filter. And detail textures. Unreal 1 had them anyway.
I hope will have Levelling system in Graven.
Kinda love this style, put your games on ultra and lower the resolution to add pixelated
added to Wishlist looks cool
VR, make it for PC VR please. Being IN the game is such a difference than watching the game, even on big tv.
I would love to see The Elder Scrolls - Arena and/or Daggerfall remade with similar tech (with added voice acting)... A mix of old style and with new tech... Those old games dont need to look like Skyrim but they have aged to the point where they are hard (for me at least) to play... So a nice compromise in terms of graphics/tech would be great... Back on topic haha - this game looks really cool :)
I'd really like to see Rise of the Triad get ported to consoles. Maybe it will be easier now that modern consoles are basically PC like. 🤞
It looks like a sequel to Hexen II. Hopefully it will find its way to next gen consoles.
It looks somewhat like hexen2. The first hexen was way cooler tho.
Males me think about how much Vermintide series fits, if somewhat loosely, into this genre.
Damn Hexen!!!! On the n64 too 🔥🔥,love that game. Would love to see the Heretic/hexen series rebooted like Doom was. ID software owns some of the rights, while the rest are stuck in call of duty limbo with raven software.if only Bethesda would buy it so ID can develop it
I would have thought Hexen would be rebooted because the success of Doom and Wolfenstein
this game looks awesome!
I love me some polygon wobble... Gimme Kingpin. :)
DF can you make a video on cancelled games that looked ahead of their time? I'm talking about Project Offset, Deep Down, 8 Days, Frame City Killer etc.
After quake and this, now we need UT in UE5😍
