Thank you, thank you, thank you. Mine trimmed up and not down... swapped over and both trims started working again. Didn't even need to buy a new one! I will go and get some new ones just in case. Legend, cheers mate
Thanks mate, simple and well presented vid. Question, agree relays do vary in price lol, looking at the ones you bought, they are 30A, (I’m led to believe that the original ones are 40A NO and 30A NC , means not much to me lol), so my question is, the ones you installed will do the trick nicely ? Cheers, Frank from Sydney
My 97 115 just started acting up. Thanks so much for posting this. Going to give it a try. Cheers from north Texas, large mouth bass capital of the world.
Thanks mate you saved my outboard from the concrete curse. 10 pm at the boat ramp coming back in after a fish and trim up wouldn’t engage. Absolute legend for the pointers. Send me your address and I’ll sort you out with a thank you.
I did this, then saw this vid. I had the original relays, which were sealed with somthing which cold be peeled away, and i could easily pop them open. One had sooty contacts. I cleaned them, and applied contact cleaner and protection spray. This could be a temporary fix even without cleaner/protection if new relays are not availible at the moment. I changed one relay, and kept the repaired as a spare. Good video.
Put new brp throttle but trim didn’t work on throttle. Ran positive to red on trim handle still nothing, ran positive to red going to motor and throttle handle and it worked for a day. It stopped trimming down at handle. Trim on motor works fine. Needed up messing around and fuse went on motor but had spare. Disconnected trim and trying to figure out wtf is wrong lol
Hi mate do you know much about power packs n coils? Im have a lot of trouble finding that when the motor is cold the boat runs sweet but when it’s warmed up the motor bogs down and spits and splatters like a car on limmitier going bttr bttr bttr ect till I back of it runs good under low rpm then when accelerating it does as described. Can you attach a way for me to send you a video please?
Hey man, so I tried this on my 02 Johnson and the relays are good but I have discovered the entire assembly is bad and am going to replace it. Have you ever had to go through changing out the whole housing?
Can a faulty relay cause it to lift at some times then be dead for a while, then work again? Mine did it yesterday… didn’t want to lift, so I put it back in the water to move out of the way, then all of a sudden it lifted again 🤦🏻♂️. Was a brilliant experience for my first time 😂
Have a look at this one mate. It doesn't show exactly how to do it, but it'll show you roughly where the bolt holes are. You'll have to undo the bolts holding the controls to your control mount. (Mine is side mounted). Good luck
I have the exact same motor and I'm having issues with mine. I tested the blue and green wire by the female connector before it does down to the trim motor and I'm only getting .5 volt reading. Any idea what could be wrong?
Only the control switch and the tilt switch on the motor run to the relays. Check the switches mate. Could be corroded, not letting enough voltage through to the relays.
Check the tilt limit switch, may have to google the location as I can't remember but I do know that it will only cause it not to trim up but will still allow you to trim down.
So, weird scenario for me on this and I may need some help. I recently went to the rear to use the controls on the motor to trim up. It went up as high as I needed it to, then when I tried to trim it back down, nothing. Trim up and down both are not working. Even the control panel up/down at the console won't do anything and it was just working seconds before I used the switch at the motor. Could this be a relay issue? I'm hearing a clicking sound from the relay when I hit the trim down switch, but no click sound when I hit the up switch. I just ordered the relays just in case, I'm hoping I don't have to replace the trim motor but will if I need to obviously. I swapped the relays around to weed out a bad one but nothing seems to work.
If you swapped the relays and can still here the click from the down relay when you hit the down switch, I'm thinking it's the hydraulic motor. Valve might be jammed which fried the up circuit (either fuse or wire?) and explains why the click on the down relay still doesn't activate the pump. Let us know how you go. Good luck
@@Unfastened thanks for the helpful video man! Saved me a lot of headaches and time. I would have probably been chasing a ghost problem had I not come across your video!
Hi, I have almost same engine as yours but 90HP. When I replace relay they work for a couple of up and downs but then back to working up or down but not the opposite. Any ideas?
A relay has a load rating. If the relay keeps blowing, the load is usually too heavy for that particular relay. Check you are replacing with the correct amperage relay. If that is correct, your tilt/trim is pulling too much load and may need looking at / replacing.
My local key west dealer thinks theres only two wires going to your tilt and trim ? Lol ..im looking for the female plug in for mine , that round plug in with the wire safety around it ? I put on a 2000 johnson 100 hp i think , removed a 1996 88 evenrude spl ..and i got both male plug ins , no wire safety clip either ? And my dealer dont know much ? 😂
I was helping a friend today with the same exact engine set up. His motor would go down but not up. I pulled both relays and switched them and still not able to get engine to go down. I did see a minimal amount of corrosion on the block where the down relay was plugged .Wet the block with wd-40 and it still didn't work after I reinstalled the relay. What is the best way to deal with the corrosion?
If it's proper corroded out, you could cut the end off and replace the connector if you have enough freeplay in the wiring. Then use a light coat of some Dielectric grease to prevent corrosion
My 115 ocean pro is doing the same thing. Motor turns over, trim doesnt work and just clicks. I replaced both relays and nothing. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Put your finger on the relay, and press the trim button. You'll be able to feel if the relay is clicking. If it is, then your problem is between the relay and the hydraulic pump. If the relay is not activating and you can't feel anything, then the problem is between the switch and the relay. You said it clicks, so the switch is probably activating the relay, but theres an issue between the relay and the pump. Start at the relay end, and check the terminals coming off the relay. Corrosion or a loose connector is possible. Then trace those wires down to the pump, and check the pump end. Put a multimeter on the pump end, see if voltage is coming through. Thatll help find out where the problem lies. Good luck
Hi, most outboards with tilt/trim will have relays for each function (one for up, one for down) and the starter motor also has it's own relay. If yours will not start, just check the starter relay, make sure it is getting power when the key is turned.
I've got a 1999 evinrude 40hp 4 stroke. I can't for the life of me find these relayts anywhere on the engine. Anybody have any idea where? Googling the image brings up diagrams that make no sense.

Just bit the bullet and bought the ones from jaycar as per video, $22 a pair, worked a treat. Cheers

Yes some relays become sticky, so once the relay latches it won't unlatch. Try replacing / swapping it
