  • Just about every outboard that has power trim/tilt will have a way to manually release the trim/tilt to lower or raise the motor. This video shows that process on an Evinrude. Follow these steps to raise or lower your motor when you have no battery connected, or if the trim/tilt is not working properly and you need the motor position changed. Thanks, 91 mercury was all the way down, used the manual to get to up just enough for the actuator to work, saved my weekend of fishing with the kids!

      Do that all the time and have to hook a battery up to use the switch on the side of the motor. If no switch there this is the next best way!!!

    I have a Johnson 88 and it will tilt up but not down. Tried to find how to release manually but failed. Going to take another looks when I get home. Thanks for the info.

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  13 дней назад

      You’ve likely got a bad solenoid, or it could be the switch on your control (do you have a switch on the motor too to test?). That motor should have a manual release on the side of the mounting bracket similar to this one in the video!!

    Mine is a 2022 Tohatsu 20HP with tilt only. I REALLY REALLY REALLY wish it had both trim and tilt! I didn’t have any understanding that they might be two different systems until seeing this video. I just thought the tilt motor wasn’t strong enough to provide trim. Now I need to do some research to better understand the difference. If you haven’t already done a video on that, that might be a good idea for one.

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Год назад +1

      Most modern motors 20 hp and under have TILT ONLY. A lot of bigger motors have a tilt cylinder and a trim cylinder which is why you’ll almost hear it “change gears” when tilting up. Trim is a higher powered cylinder with more torque for trimming under load. Tilt is just the “move it fast” cylinder. Not much you can do now other than add an aftermarket power trim bracket.

      Maybe need another hand helping lift, that’s not a light motor. Otherwise I’d be nervous that your trim cylinder is locked up. Has it been sitting a long time, or just started acting up?

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  3 месяца назад +1

      OH NO!!! Sorry, no quick tips for that one. They do make a tool of sorts that helps to tilt manual tilt motors up from inside the boat. It levers on the hood of the motor to make it easier to tilt them up. I wouldn't want to try it on this big of a motor though!

    I can use this manual if the boat is in the water?

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  10 дней назад

      Yes, but obviously not when running for a number of reasons. You could leave it just slightly loose so it can tip up and down if you’re afraid of hitting the bottom, that way the motor will lift and do less damage. I’ve heard of people doing that instead of fixing the power trim and tilt if it quits working.

    Hi I have a 150hp mercury outbord that the trim tilt is all the way down and the release valve screw is striped,so how do I get to lift the engine.

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  10 месяцев назад

      Yikes! Are you using a standard screw driver or a MASSIVE flat head one? I'm not really sure what your options would be other than maybe draining the fluid from it so it loses pressure. Not even sure that would work on all outboards.

    • @tomspontoons

      Glad it helped get your motor down. Yes, you can run the motor like that but if you rev it high in reverse it could pop up out of the water! So be sure to tighten it back down.

      Yes, but remember that with the trim/tilt disabled your motor can kick up out of the water if you hit reverse with much throttle.

    • @tomspontoons

      No, the screw releases the pressure of the hydraulics so the hydraulic motor will run, but the trim/tilt won’t move. Great question

    • @tomspontoons

      @@themowerman9513 Definitely a great place to start! Sometimes folks will loosen the screw too if they're having trouble with the trim/tilt and don't want to pay to have it fixed. So they'll loosen the screw allowing the motor to tilt up easier if they hit something...I'm hoping for your sake that the trim/tilt unit is fine and the screw was just backed out and left on accident!

      @themowerman9513 Год назад +1

    • @tomspontoons
      @tomspontoons  Год назад +1

      @@themowerman9513 Next would be to check trim fluid level by adding fluid. Worst case would be a motor issue or seal….at that point it’s time to take it to a marina for a mechanic to diagnose and fix.

      loosening that same bolt head should allow you to lift it. It will need to be loosened pretty far to do so and might take a couple people lifting on it to get it in the right position.
