3 blokes in their late 50's at the end of a 3 hour show absolutely shredding it better than kids a quarter of their age. How did the 3 greatest players in rock end up in the same band ? Lucky for us they did
Rush just rocks. Nuff said. Simply amazing for 50 years. "I can't wait to hear all their hits." That is going to be quite the journey my friend. They have many, many hits.
This is the song that put them on the map. It was mailed to a Cleveland radio station. The DJ had to go to the bathroom so she picked the longest song. When she got back, the phones were ringing off the hook. People were calling in wondering when the new Zeppelin album was coming out. She had to explain they were RUSH. Her name was Deb Halpern. Also, the original version didn't have this first part in a Reggae format.
Neil did okay on this song seeing as John Rutsey did the drums on the studio version. And the story goes that Geddy wrote the lyrics for this song (and all the other lyrics on the first album) in one night. The following is an early version of "Working Man" with RUSH (and Rutsey) playing to a crowd at a Jr. High School in 1974: ruclips.net/video/SZYr_J9H54I/видео.html
Xanadu from Exit... Stage Left is an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE. They take you on a journey, the intro is a soundscape that creates such an incredible mood and feeling of wonder.
I agree...Xanadu from Exit...Stage Left. Also, Freewill, and Red Barchetta from Exit... are so worth watching. All spectacular live performances. A MUST see would be (I know you've already listened to YYZ, but the A Show of Hands, version includes an abridged drum solo that is one the best performances ever given by Neil Peart, the drummer. Here's a link....you can thank me later... ruclips.net/video/nl8W1DddK_Q/видео.html
Cleveland put them on the map, and these guys never forget the people who have helped them throughout their career. Donna Halper (a DJ) picked this song due to how long it was for bathroom breaks. To this day they still keep in contact with her. I've seen quite a few bands over the decades and Rush has ruined live concerts for me, because nobody has come close to their energy and playing ability. The only song that comes to mind that hasn't had to many reactions is Red Barchetta live from Exit Stage Left. Take care!✌
Of course Cleveland helped. It’s less than 300 miles by car to Toronto. Just as you go to the border towns in Texas you’re going to find a lot of Mexican food and influence. Then when the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame came in 1983 well that just started radiating a general musical influence that definitely went back-and-forth over the border. There isn’t a Canadian performer that I know of (that’s the key if you don’t know of them in America they couldn’t have gotten that big.) that made it big without USA.
to answer your question, it's "G"eddy with the hard "G". his name is Gary, but his mom's thick accent made it sound like "Geddy", so that's how everyone always called him.
If you'd like to see one of their slower songs, check out "The Garden" on their Clockwork Angels tour. It was their last song on their last album, and it's a beautiful end to an incredible career.
@@mylesdevine9513 I've often said that in Alex's solo, he expresses gratitude for the moments they had together, extreme sadness that they are gone, and a glint of hope that will be more moments to come.
Working Man was ALWAYS one of the best songs in their concert. The Time Machine Tour version was a really nice twist. They took a great song and made it even better. What a concert that was!
The reggae introduction was just for this tour. If you want to bang your head check out Headlong Flight from the Clockwork Angels album, it’s awesome.👍🔥🎧🤘🏻
We're not worthy!! We're not worthy!!Rush are truly one of the best rock bands ever. RIP Neal Peart. Love how they changed it up in the beginning of the song with a reggae sound. Check out Bravado from their live in Rio De Janeiro video. You'll love it.👍😀🙏
Saw this concert live in my home city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and it was just as great here as it was in Cleveland! RUSH always gave their fans 100+%. What you see is what you get at all RUSH concerts! Cheers from Canada! 🍻🇨🇦🍻🇨🇦
It never ceases to blow my mind how easy they made this look. Alex is absolutely melting that guitar and he isn't even breaking a sweat. Geddy is doing the same to that bass, and Neil back there is beating the ever loving hell out of those drums. None of them look like they're working hard or even really trying. Absolute masters each of them, deeply in love with what they do.
I do love the reggae vibe they did for the live version on this tour. may years ago I bought the RUSH album simply because the art was so cheap I figured they had to have put all of their money and energy into the music. I was hooked from that album on 🤓
Unfortunately Neil is no longer with us he passed about a year and a half ago because of brain cancer. Tomorrow night there's actually a special showing it's selected theaters of the r40 tour I can't wait! Some great songs to check out are resist, nobody's hero, test for echo, Far Cry, the garden, and b2bu just to get you started
Yes, Gibby rocking out to my namesake and his two best mates, I was named after singer/bassist Geddy Lee, so you know I've been a Rush fan my whole life. Keep rocking, Gibby!
Yes, original RUSH drummer John Rutsey who only played on their 1974 self titled debut album RUSH & the Professor aka RUSH drummer Neil Peart have both passed away.
Try 'The Garden' live. It's the last song on their last album before Neil Peart passed. Neil wrote most of the lyrics for Rush. This song is possibly a reflection of his life, having lost his daughter and partner within 6 months.
I always like to start with studio recordings, then check out live versions. The studio version doesn't begin with a reggae beat, it's a full blown rocker and my favorite RUSH song.
This was the greatest performance live of this song - RIP Neil Peart, I believe that was his very last song live before he passed. Saw them twice thankfully - their first album wasn't even with Neil on drums but it's actually my favorite now even more than Moving Pictures or 2112 - btw I was #100 like
His last concert was in Los Angeles. I think this was the last one in Cleveland. I was fortunate enough to see their final tour in both Detroit and near Washington DC, in 2015
Check out from RUSH: Finding My Way, Anthem, Bastille Day, 2112 or Temples Of Syrinx, Something For Nothing, Circumstances, Xanadu, Subdivisions, Distant Early Warning, Show Don't Tell, Freewill, Red Barchetta, etc, etc, etc

You cannot go wrong with any Rush, seriously. ... You may prefer certain eras more than others. I love it all because it just reflects a commitment to their craft and doing what they wantwd, even when it wasn't popular with anyone (fans included) So you've started with their older stuff, so I'd recommend La Villa Strangiato, Natural Science, Red Barchetta, Freewill, Limelight, Fly by Night.. The last album they released was Clockwork Angels and is a full concept album. There was also a book released of the story. Probably their finest overall body off work. Sadly their percussionist, Neil, aka the Professor, passed away last January. He also wrote the majority of the band's lyrics, I believe 5 books, and is arguably, the greatest drummer of all time. He's always 1, 2, or 3 depending on the list. You should probably check out one of his solos also. Neil Peart. I written too much now so good luck on your journey! Welcome to the family!
more live stuff is from their 1988 Show of Hands tour and their 2002 Live in Rio tour. when you have the crowd singing an instrumental it is amazing. great job Gibby. keep running down the Rush Rabbit hole.
As a "person of faith" you may find it of interest that Geddy Lee's parents were survivors of the Holocaust. They met when they were just teenagers in a "Jewish Ghetto" in Nazi occupied Poland (Starachowice). After being held (separately) in Dachau, Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz when their liberators came his father set out to find 'Manya' (Ged's mother). Of course he found her. They married and eventually settled in Canada. "Gary" was born 29 July 1953 in Toronto. Alex's parents also arrived in the Toronto area, albeit only from British Columbia, shortly thereafter. Geddy and Alex met in junior high school. The rest is rock and roll history.
and they have said they have no religious beliefs. which one can tell from the neil lyrics and geddy said and alex nodded his head no beliefs in gods but believed in spreading good energy out.
Having seen them around 15 times, my only lament is I wish I could have seen them once on their early tours but, I'd have to be a bit older than I am, and I'm 52. I absolutely love how the three of them gel, not just on stage but, as collaborators when writing Rush's music as well as friends. Over the decades, Geddy's voice smoothed out a bit and didn't push the upper registers as often as their early days. One of my absolute favorite early captures of them is from the Fifth Order of Angels soundboard bootleg of the song "In the End" from their Fly by Night album. More even than that, the complete EASE with which they do it. None of them are breaking a sweat. All three look relaxed and just having a fun time.
