Took my 24-year-old kid to this show in Los Angeles Besides the mind melting talent, three things stood out to me 1) it was a seated arena and literally no one sat in their seats. If you didn't stand up, you'd miss the show. Everyone was standing up 2) these guys played for over 3 hours with one short break in the middle and played Moving Pictures start to finish 3) light show and sound was the best I ever heard in 200 concerts, we couldn't hear right for 24 hours I will accept father of the year for this
The solo section of this performance is one of the most amazing solos I’ve ever seen. It was literally like all three of them were soloing at the same time.
If you see too many Rush concerts you are spoiled. I went to Sting this year and he played exactly 75 minutes and went off stage, then exactly 15 minutes encore and that was it. Would have been halftime at Rush show. :D
I'm like 99% sure that Alex's solo was improvised and if you hear another performance from the same tour, it won't be the same. Alex is clearly the type that has a solo that he created and is in the recording, and then live he'll improvise around his original idea. In this performance he really took it to another level. This is a case of flow and energy from the music, the other musicians, and the audience, channeling and producing an epic performance. The performance was going great, the audience was completely into it, so Alex got caught in that and just went for it. You can see the same thing with Neal on that last drum fill, he got swept by the energy of the performance going so well, the other musicians getting carried away, and he just completely went for it, at the end of the fill he still needed to channel the remaining energy somewhere, hence that movement with his arms and face, because he couldn't do it with the drums since the music required him to end the fill. While Alex and Geddy can channel that energy into moving around and jumping, Neil is sitting on the drums, when he can't channel it to the drums, he has to direct it somewhere else.
You can THANK "Clear Channel" for that. They can't help but RUIN everything they get their hands on. MMS used to be THE premier FM radio station in the Midwest. It was known from coast to coast. Home of the Buzzard with Jeff and Flash. God I miss those days.
I never get tired of this one. As much as I love their skills as musicians, I have so much respect for the friendship and love they had for each other.
I'm sure someone said it, but, the bit at the end that you wish was a little longer is the intro to Cygnus X-1 Book I: The Voyage from A Farewell to Kings. The story continues on Hemispheres Cygnus X-1 Book II. 😁
The outro was the opening beat to their 2 part epic masterpiece Cygnus X-1, which spans their albums A Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres, adding up to about 30 minutes that will completely blow your mind. Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸
Some people complain about Geddy’s older voice not having the same punch. But that’s to be expected. Their later albums reflected what he could do at the time and the live shows supported this. But he could still do most older things. Surely not the screaming first albums but they entertained. And honestly when you’re at the show, joined by thousands of peers for one reason: to see three legends do their thing, it was amazing.
This song was first played on the radio in Cleveland. It launched Rush's career. They always played their hearts out in Cleveland out of appreciation. WMMS played this song against the wishes of the programmers and the 'working men' of Cleveland LOVED it.
You need to listen to the original studio version and compare it to this version. What a difference 40 years of experience makes and it's fun to see that they still love what they do and have a bit of a devilish playful aspect to all of their personalities which perfectly translates to the trio that is RUSH! And oh yeah, they still rock hard with the best of them.
The original cut also had a different drummer and though John Rutsey was a really good drummer, he was nowhere near Neil’s world. Just the addition of Neil changed the sound of this song a lot. The love version on All The World’s A Stage showed a tremendous change in the song and that was just a few years after the original recording, yet Neil had completely rewritten the song.
Cleveland holds a special place in the hearts of RUSH and their fans! I also couldn't help but notice that you and Alex seem to be wearing the same flannel shirt, which is epic in it's own right! 😊🏆
You had to see them live ! They can play with time signatures like you change your shirt, seamless, effortlessly. Listen to the opening salvo for the live Vapor Trails.
Glad I dropped into this. I knew Rush were crazy good musicians, but this is cosmic. Incredible technique that adds to the music. It must be rehearsed but sounds like a jam. Amazing.
This song is one of my favorites! I remember putting it as a ringtone on my friend who bitched about work CONSTANTLY!😉😂I was lucky enough to see them 8x in my lifetime, each show seemed better than the last! And the lines were always hella short for the ladies room lol

The Magnet comment was a good one. Geddy and Alex have been best friends since they were 13 the same age they both started playing instruments. They have been playing together since 1968 when Alex formed the band. All three of them were not only band mates but also the best of friends. Dinner with Rush would be a good one for you to react to as you will see how much fun these guys had with each other. Also, The bit they were playing at the end was Cygnus X I book 1 from a Farewell to Kings then the continuation Cygnus Book 2 is on Hemispheres . That would be two awesome ones to check out. Geddy hits some incrediblely high notes in Cygnus book 1 Cheers
I almost always prefer the studio over a live version because the sound is usually superior without the crowd "white noise". This is good, though & keeps the crowd as background noise. The exception would be Queen who used their crowds as part of the live experience.
working man in cleveland got them signed early back in the day. this was just huge to come back after all these years and end with working man in cleveland why its so magical
Thanks for getting to this favorite of mine. Was it just a coincidence that you dressed the same as Alex in the video? Great reaction. The outro bit was really fun. Its actually part of the song Cygnus X1 Book 1.
This was their final song of their fascinating career and I got to watch Neil come to the front of the stage for his final bow.... Waited in the parking lot at the Forum till 3:30 am and got to meet Alex before getting into his limo.... Was my 53rd Rush show after seeing them for the first time at the Forum in 1978.... I feel so very blessed to have seen 53 of the greatest drum solos of all time.... Praise Jesus
I am a huge Rush fan, so I am so biased with these three guys. Neil: drum legend. Alex: a guitar player’s guitar player. But in my opinion, pound for pound Geddy is by far the most impressive musician I have ever literally seen. With writing, bass playing, sun h playing, foot pedal playing and singing and usually all at the same time….. no one has the right to have so much talent.
I think the most stunning aspect of this live version is that you literally can't see this coming based on the studio version. Such is Rush; they use their studio version as the baseline and build up from it for their live shows, while other bands can only try to match their studio versions in their live shows.
The song they did just before Working Man is pretty good also: La Villa Strangiato. Further instrumental goodness comes from their rendition of "Leave that Thing Alone"
Incredible performance! By the way, on this "Time Machine" tour, Rush was always pushing WM to be more and more of a jam, but they didn't always play it exactly like this. I was at the Red Rocks concert -- near Denver -- and WM was, again, blistering. But, I went back and watched it recently and I saw that it differs slightly from the Cleveland show, in a small but significant way. Alex....Alex just ABUSED his guitar (like it owed him money), and brought out a solo that almost beats the one you just heard! The Red Rocks shows -- over the years, they came back to RR a few times -- are special, that's for sure!
Salvo, you ought to check out something called "Rash," the "opening act" to their 2011 tour - a bit of tomfoolery that shows what a bunch of nerdy goofballs these guys really are - that leads into their performance of "The Spirit of Radio."
I give credit to this song for keeping me half sane for the god-awful 3 1/2 years in Hawaii. NOT an 808 fan.🤬 A band that played at a nearby bar/nightclub would play this and nail it. Giving me a reason to live. When they saw me roll in, they knew they were going to be "Working Men". RIP Neil.😇

Alex in this performance was an actual force of nature
This after playing La Villa Strangiato, is crazy.
Thank you for watching the original first…one of the only reviewers to do this
I attended that show. Cleveland has always been a favorite place for Rush to perform.
I've been listening to these guys since 1974 and they have never let me down to this date
If you haven't seen it, I believe there is a video of pretty much the whole concert in Rio, plus the back story, which is phenomenal.
Saw this tour live. Hours of musicianship and magic. One of the best concerts ever.
Not only was this after a 3 hour show, but they were in their late 50s in 2010/11 when this show took place. Just incredible.

Yaaaaaas! 🤗 More Rush! 🤩 We get Cleveland finally! Let's Go! 😁🐰
What made this band so great was performances like this, after playing a 3 hr set this was their encore to the fans of Cleveland
