It was May 1981 in Rochester, NY at the Rochester Community War Memorial Arena… I was a senior in HS and my birthday is the 14th of May… My brothers and my best friend Mike and I drove to
See them. Anyways, it was the moving pictures tour, the concert was amazing. The next morning my friend and I went to this place called Chet’s Luncheonette… As we were finishing breakfast I looked up and sitting at the counter was Neil Peart and someone else (roadie or tech?) I knew Neil was a private guy but I idolized him. I knew he didn’t give autographs but I needed to acknowledge him (this was long before phone cams/ or digital cams). I told Mike I’m gonna say something, I went to the register and paid and told the woman “I’d like to pay for those guys at the end of the counters meal as well.” As I got closer I got scared, I stopped and said, “Mr. Peart, thanks for all the music, I’ve been a fan since 76…”
He looked up and smiled and said, “Hey man, thanks for the support and being a fan…”
    I think I said, “Yuh”
And walked out… It was one of my fondest memories, it was surreal…
Thanks for the warm memory. R.I.P. Neil Peart and long live the mighty Rush! 👊🏻

The ultimate Rush performance is "Xanadu" from the Exit Stage Left tour. You will literally not believe how perfect it is. Geddy plays bass, six string guitar, keyboards & synths, bass pedals, and sings. Alex plays twelve and six string guitars and pedals; and Neil plays an entire orchestral percussion section, including tubular bells & glockenspiel. It is the perfect live performance and incredibly brilliant! Trust me. I call it three geniuses with seven necks. Watch to figure out why.

Saw Rush 4 times during my high school years in the 70's. First time was when they had released their 3rd album "Caress Of Steel" and were opening for Kiss (Rush's so called "down the tubes tour" when their record label was about to drop them). Then 2112 came out and they were the headliner. My favorite band growing up, no one rocked harder than Rush in those days!

Cleveland Ohio was a blue collar working town, and the song "Working Man" went hand in hand.
When Rush's first album was released they were not very well known at all. In 1974, Donna Halper a DJ at WMMS FM/100.7 in Cleveland, played Rush's "Working Man" on the radio for the first time in the United States. She looked at the L.P. and saw the title of the song so played it in the wee hours of the early am traffic. The station received thousands of calls asking about it, and so it became something they played regularly.

That was absolutely fantastic!! Yes, let's do more Rush! Like The Warning, it's beyond me how they got so much sound from just three people live. Having had a brief time with Rush, I think it was a greatest hits album in the 90's, I'll have to dig it out and see, then there has to be a ton of songs I don't know. Some bands are just so good live. Rush, The Warning, Nightwish, Iron Maiden, DMB, Midnight Oil, to name but a few.

  • @RoarOfWolverine
    @RoarOfWolverine 7 месяцев назад +3

Back in the 70s, not many people knew Rush. Because of the length of their songs, radio wouldn’t play them because they couldn’t get in as many commercials. Besides, reporters for Rolling Stone and DJs couldn't understand their music, so instead bashed them all of the time.. It was musicians, like myself, that gravitated to bands that make complicated music, like Yes, Jethro Tull, Emerson Lake and Palmer and of course Rush.
I am a guitarist and played in bands in the late 70s, 80s and 90s and I had never heard any music like Rush before. Their themes and their musical abilites was so challenging. My band would play Rush songs at a time of the early 80s and the crowd would think they were our songs. When people asked if those were our songs I just said, “we wish” then I’d tell them about Rush, but because they weren't on radio, most people had never heard their music. People would always confuse them with Mahogany Rush whenever you’d say the name RUSH.
If you get the DVD of their concert in Rio, you can see each musician playiing throughout the concert. It allows you to split the screen 4 ways, one wide shot of the whole band and then each musician in separate boxes. It’s really great, but you still need to watch each song three times to watch each guy throughout the song, especially instrumentals like YYZ and La Villa Strangiato. Rush has several instrumentals that are real popular. Where’s My Thing and Leave That Thing Alone are a couple others, but YYZ and La VIlla Strangiato are the two most legendary that they pllay at every concert.
It was their first time in South America, so they were filling soccer arenas with like 60,000 people in attendence and everyone sang every lyric of every song, but when they played YYZ, an instrumental, everone was singing along with the guitar melody, as if it had lyrics. It’s really insane and awesome to watch.
You can hear the crowd over the band. Rush fans are unjlike any other band’s fans. Very dedicated, which is how they got into the hall of fame. The HAll Of Fame selections are made by the same idiots from Rolling Stone and other publications that hate Rush with a passion. They tried everything to wreck their careers, but it failed because people found them anyway, mostly though a lot of touring.
In 2013, The HOF let people online vote for the final act to go in that year, a cast of non-rock and roll artists, except for Heart. They were the only legitamate rock band selected that year besides Rush. The jerks at the HOF probably thought that Rush could not win such a poll because their fanbase is so small. Yes, they are small, but extreemly dedicated to the band, enough so they would all take the time to register and vote on such a silly poll.
The poll was for fun, not official and they reserevd the right to dissmiss it and choose someone else. The problem is, when they publishred the results, Rush had garnered 25% of the total vote! That's insane. No other group was close to even double digit percentages, yet Rush acoounted for one quarter of the total votes spread out among hundreds of artists. Even those asshats at the HOF couldn’t ignore such a sweep, so they reluctantly made it official and Rush was inducted to the R&RHOF.
The first kick in Jann Wrenner’s teeth was the explosion of an ovation that lasted for over 2 minutes. It was the loudest and longest ovation in the history of the R&RHOF history. It caught him completely off-guard and he had to step back when he heard it. He never got to say the name of the band. As soon as he says, “…and from Toronto” the place lit up like a bomb wemt off.
Dave Grohl did the induction speech with Taylor Hicks (RIP) and it was the best induction ever. Dave even called out Rolling Stone, the inhibitor of Rush’s success and how the band succeeded in spite of their efforts. It’s a great speech and can be found on RUclips, but warning, it is NSFW. A whole lot of F-bombs, but it’s funny and so true. Grohl, liike most drummers, is a huge Rush fan.
It’s amazing just how many famous musicians from the 1980s up to topday were inspired by Rush. Even bands that sound nothing like them. Dream Theater makes sense since they’re progressive, but Pearl Jam or the Police are a bit shocking? Even Smashing Pumpkins are huge Rush fans and an enormous list of more. There were several famous musician at the ceremony that stayed standing the longest. I think that Tommy Morello is still standing? He stood the longest, but with him I saw Chad Smith (or it was Will Farrel, it’s hard to tell them apart), Dave Grohl and several others.
No band was more deserving of the praise that night than Rush. They may have gotten in with Wrenner’s hands twisted behind his back, but they did derserve it more than any other indectee that night.

Just please keep in mind that Rush is one of the rare bands whose oeuvre actually constitutes its own genre.
They were a band that never stood still and ( ... you might remember this from Behind the Lighted Stage) wrote the music they thought they would like, themselves, rather than what record-buyers might like.
All of which is to say that, if you want to get to know Rush's music, it's going to take some time - because 19 studio albums and a dozen live ones have left us with A LOT of music!

I never get tired of watching this; my favorite part is the dueling guitars! As I mentioned in your last Rush reaction, I am a new Rush fan, but I am in awe of their live performances especially. How three guys create all of that sound is a wonder to behold! One of my favorite live performance videos is from their "keyboard era" in the 1980s: 'Mission", Live from Birmingham 1988. The lyrics are inspiring, Geddy multitasks at the bass, keyboard, foot pedals and singing, Neil has a xylophone solo. Finally, Alex's guitar solo is especially soulful. It's one of my favorite Rush videos and the live performance has an immediate impact even today.

The very ending was their 'concert sign-off' (it's from Cygnus X1 - that's one for later, a concept album) - this was the finale song of the concert - I saw the concert a few days after this one on the tour (and again a year later on the 2 year tour- had to see this concert twice!), and about 95% of that performance was identically face melting, basically like most of Neil's drum solos - he does have some sections that are improvised at each performance, but mostly they are just that good. Not sure if you've checked out La Villa Strangiato yet - it's an instrumental based off a recurring nightmare Alex used to have - great instrumental, really shows off their abilities - I like the studio version the best but there are quite a few live ones that amaze, some that are just silly. Also a must see if you haven't is YYZ live in Rio - the audience there was amazing - another of Rush's instrumentals - basically a drum/bass groove with some other magic. YYZ is the airport code for their home town airport - Toronto Pearson International airport, and when flying back home into airport they would hear the Morse code for YYZ over the transponder, which is how the song begins - people usually wonder as it has a very strange intro if you go in not knowing.

Live performance of their first hit song redone partially in Reggae style. The original arrangement received massive airplay on a Rock station in Cleveland. That sort of put them on the map, a little ol' 3 piece band from Toronto. This special concert was their way of thanking the city, I think. Their first album did not include Neal Peart who was the drummer and composer for all their subsequent albums.

They are/were the best live band I have or ever will see. I luckily saw them 19 times including a show they did a week before this Cleveland show in Louisville. They were consummate professional musicians and were a joy to behold. I honestly see some parallels between them and The Warning. Great music, intelligent lyrics, passionate live performance, and a growing rabid fan base. Keep up your good work bringing such great music to the people.

Great reaction to an amazing performance! Rush is always great but I really believe the best way to experience them is to see a live performance. In addition they actually have a few music videos that were made in studio. Those are normally great too because again you get the extra added pleasure of seeing them actually play the music. Please do a reaction to Rush - Xanadu - Exit...Stage Left - Live 1981. It is possibly one of the greatest live rock performances of all time. Take care and enjoy the ride Rush is a very deep rabbit hole with tons of different styles of songs.

Well thanks! Loved this one..and even the Cleveland show! This has got to be one of the best live performances ever. I call myself old at 42 but these guys in their 60's (RIP Neil) give me hope lol. I say this every time but they are IMO the Goats at their instruments..bass,guitar, and definitely drums. Neil was absolutely the best. And they all ended up in one band. Just amazing..and just real good family oriented men. Can't get much better!

I totally appreciate the initial ‘barrier’ to getting into Rush. I experienced the very same sentiments, albeit back in the 80s, it wasn’t until my friends encouraged me to see them live (Glasgow then Edinburgh), my mind was blown and immediately got ‘it’, although, with later regret, the last album I bought was Grace Under Pressure. My bad 🙈. Thank you for your reaction ❤. And yes, they seem as lovely as you do 😎

There's the reason they closed their Cleveland shows with this song. In 1974, a DJ at local Cleveland's rock blowtorch radio played the demo of "Working Man" and the phones blew up. The song resonated with the blue collar nature of Cleveland, and that became the (then unknown) band's foot in the door to America.
The reggae intro is also a nod to their roots, they used to listen to local community radio that played a lot of music for the nearby Jamaican diaspora in Toronto. That's why they also shift to reggae in "Spirit of the Radio" as if they were surfing the dial.

Three of the greatest musicians evah! One of the rare times you see Neil having a little fun. This song and the people of Cleveland via the DJ Donna Halper are what put Rush on the map. So it's kinda cool he gives a shout out to the people in the audience. Even better, they're still close to the DJ. Just some cool down to earth guys who didn't forget the people who got them there.
Enjoyed the reaction. It's always fun to see someone discover or rediscover these guys.
    Take care ✌️

I was 22 or 23 years old when this started playing in Cleveland. As most of you know, it was only played to give the DJ time for a bathroom break. I cannot say I heard it the first time, but, well, it took the hell OFF. We didn't really know the name of the band, but, we knew to ask for the one with that singer that sounded like a castrated cat, or, the one with that bad ass guitar riff. Of course, that was John Rutsey on drums, not Mr Peart. We didn't know any of that. We knew it was a kick ass tune, and we knew we identified with what was being said. Cleveland back then was in the death throes of a rust belt town. "Nothing going down here!". We are proud to consider these guys as Clevelands, altho, we know and understand they are all Canadians, from the Ontario.

Glad you got to see this particular performance - one of my favorites & as a Cleveland guy I was happy to see Rush go all-out on Working Man -- my town has a deep connection with these guys. I sometimes think everyone who grew up in the 70s and/or eighties must have at least some Rush in their music DNA...

The comic-book style 2112 with the lyrics and some of Neil's and Ayn's quotes was quite well done - and it is a the studio version I believe - I think that video really adds to the experience for a lot of people as they can actually follow the story of the character. A few liberties were taken I think, but otherwise a great video especially for reaction vids I would say.

For those who STILL might not know, it was a Cleveland DJ named Donna Halper who gave Rush their first real radio intro to the United States . She says that back in those days, dj's would find what they called "bathroom songs"--in other words LONG enough to give someone time to answer nature's call. That song was WORKING MAN. The request lines were ringing off the hook. In time it would become a concert staple, often used to close the show...and so it would be until their final show in 2015. A sad but fitting end 🥹

Great reaction!!! You obviously appreciate artistical musicianship. Rush is absolutely the best 3-piece band ever (quite frankly top five best band ever, no matter the members). Pure musicianship and fluid artistry in each of them and their instruments along with the pure chemistry between them.
Welcome aboard the Rush Train!!! Now time to venture down the RUSH rabbit hole.
I would suggest the songs below to add to your Rush journey and reactions. All of these are absolutely fire!!! Especially all of the LIVE instrumentals with Geddy’s Bass, Alex’s Guitar, and Neil’s percussive artistry.
    - La Villa Strangiato - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental - custom "carnival" intro) - original was 1978. Pure musicianship!!! UNMATCHED - best instrumental EVER. This was performed just BEFORE Working Man at the concert.
    - Xanadu...Live version 1981 Exit Stage Left tour...will leave you speechless from pure musicianship...original was 1977.
    - YYZ…live from Rio in 2002 (instrumental)…original was 1981
    - Freewill... Live from Snakes and Arrows Tour 2007 - original was 1980
    - Best Intro Ever - Live version (R30 tour 2004) - various riffs from their 1970's songs leading into Spirit of Radio - original was 1980
    - Leave that Thing Alone - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental) - original was 1993
    - The Garden (Clockwork Angels tour live) - original was 2012
    - Malignant Narcissism (instrumental) and Drum Solo - Live 2008 Snakes and Arrows Tour - original was 2007
    - Closer to the Heart (Live 1998 Different Stages) - original was 1977
    - Limelight...studio version - original was 1981.
    - Subdivisions...studio version or live version - original was 1982
    - Fly by Night - original was 1975
    - Also...Neil Peart's Drum Solo Live from Frankfurt 2004. He was The Professor...a pure musician and percussionist...not just a "drummer". Be ready to be amazed by not just his hand coordination...but most of all his foot coordination...basically his feet being completely individual in timing from his hands during segments of this performance. He was the master of this technique.

Just so you know, this song was first played on WMMS radio station in Cleveland, Ohio thanks to Ms. Donna Harper. Before Rush signed there 1st radio deal with Mercury Records. This is when they first started touring in the USA. I believe in 1974.? Or 75.

I know I'm about 3 months late to this party, and maybe you already know this, but that song and Cleveland have a very special significance to Rush. It was the first song on their first album, which was independently produced and released, from 1974, before Neil was with them. They were struggling to get any airplay and recognition in Canada, and they sent a copy of their album to a radio station in Cleveland. The DJ, Donna Halper played the first song, not knowing what to expect, and was instantly blown away right from the opening riffs. The phones immediately began ringing off the hook, and Rush was exposed, and in the U.S, to boot. They really pulled out all the stops for Cleveland on this song that night!

I love coming back to watch this version of Working Man. For a really way-back look at them and this song, search for "Rush Laura Secord Secondary School, 1974, St Catharines, Ontario", and jump to the 27-minute mark [or watch the whole 39 minute concert]. I think it might be the only footage of their first drummer - John Rutsey. This was held in a high school across town from me, which I thought was cool. In my own little "claim to fame", I actually went to the same high school as Neil did [Lakeport], although I was a decade behind him... lol

If you love Rush, I'd urge you to check out a Canadian 2-piece band called Crown Lands. Incredible sound and music they can produce between the two of them and clearly influenced by Rush.
Maybe look at Context: Fearless Part 1 Live as an introduction - they are phenomenal.
