Yes, Geddy Lee is singing. Yes, he is playing bass. Yes, he is playing keyboards, while simultaneously keeping a bassline going with foot-pedals, and singing. Welcome to Rush. You could really just skip around and hit most-popular/played songs if you want to start that way. Their older stuff is more album-concept-length. Excited to see ya experience 2112 for the first time bud. Keep in mind, Rush has several "phases" so earlier will sound different. Their "synth-up-front" era happens after this album, then they go thru another style change with Presto, then back to basics with Counterparts, etc. Enjoy.
Most people are limited by what they can play because of a skill barrier or time to practice....Geddy is only limited by how many arms, legs, and voices he was given.....if he had more arms or legs and mouths he'd be playing and singing more all at the same time at the highest level. Phenom.
I think during the 70s (expecially Farewell, 2112 and Hemispheres) Geddy is doing all the playing at same time when recording.I read somewhere that Xanadu got recorded in 1 take.

The drummer was Neil "The Professor" Peart, IMHO, the best drummer rock ever produced. He passed away January 7th, 2020. All 3 members of Rush are at the very top, among the finest musicians in rock... Alex Lifeson, the guitarist, has a new band now. Geddy Lee, bass, keyboards and vocals, is releasing a memoir this year, I think, written during lockdown in Toronto. And personally, I think you should dip back into early Rush, and move forward to see how they evolved as a band.
Rush and Led Zeppelin are, in my opinion, the two greatest "talents" ever assembled. As far as drums go, I've always said that Bonham was the greatest drummer, while the Professor (Peart) was the greatest percussionist. Bonham had ferocious power, endurance and timing; Peart was a wizard at creating music out hitting things.
@@charlesgervais4673 That's a really good way of putting it. I still think Neil was the greatest technical drummer, plus the lyric writing, but John was just so powerful.
I use to be in a 3 person band with my brother and a friend. We always aspired to try to play a Rush song and we eventually bought tickets to a show to see how they actually pull off the sounds. I'm not lying when I tell you these guys sounded better than the studio version, they replicated the sounds perfectly while throwing in unique phrasings specifically to that concert, and they played for 3 and a half hours straight. I've been to a lot of concerts and can tell you far and away Rush was the best concert I've ever attended. It impressed me on a level that's never been replicated before going to that concert and certainly not after it as well.
Love your Resting Rush Face! 🤣 (That slack-jawed, glassy-eyed look of amazement we all get from watching/listening to the 'Holy Trinity'.) Starting at the beginning would be best context wise. There are several different eras of Rush's style and it can seem disjointed if you're jumping around 40+ years of music without understanding how they got from point A to point B, if you know what I mean. Fair warning! Geddy's (singer) about 30 here and his voice has lowered from the early days.😂 Young Geddy vocals can cut glass! But since you're loving it now I've got no doubts you'll love the earlier stuff too.

For a different perspective, check out "Closer to the Heart", and "The Garden" (one of their last songs). Very different sound from the band. Also a must - Neil Peart (pronounced "Peer-t", not "Purt") and his drum solo Live in Frankfurt.
The great thing about Rush is that they play live with the same perfection as the studio versions so in many cases the live versions are preferable. Like YYZ in Rio because the crowd absolutely adds to the energy of this song and Rush nails the performance.
In this song, Geddy Lee plays Bass and keyboards along with singing. PLaying live, he does all 3 at the same time. I know you've said you listed to studio version before live, but check out Xanadu. In that song, Alex Lifeson plays a 6- and 12-string- guitar, Geddy Lee plays bass and 12-string guitar, keyboards, foot pedals, and sings, all while "The Professor" Neil Peart plays ALL sorts of percussion instruments. It's crazy to watch. I'd also completely recommend the official live version La Villa Strangiato; each musician puts on a show of virtuosity in that has to be heard to be believed.
To really appreciate their talent; you have to see them do this song live. Yep, 3 people, playing this song dead on perfect at every show they played it.
I feel lucky to have seen them 3 times. Watching them in concert is like watching an album come to life. Watch some live performances, you will be amazed!
Geddy Lee's voice has always brought to my mind the image of a enchanter weaving a powerful spell over his audience... a Pied Piper of sorts calling them into the lyrics.

I used to work VIP for a Concert place that used to be called Nissan Pavilion & I got to “wait on” these guys….Extremely Chill & Down to Earth!!! Oh & AMAZING TIPPERS!!!
So, for the purpose of recording the video, you do see the players do different things at different times. However, in live shows, you will see these three guys do everything at once. Yes, they are that amazing 👏

The song that challenges even the drummer who wrote it, every single time he played it. Neil repeatedly mentions how difficult it was to play Tom Sawyer on a nightly basis. Their seminal hit, but BRILLIANT.
In 1981 I was 16 years old. Moving Pictures had just been released. I went to Sam the Record Man and bought it. When I heard Tom Sawyer I was completely blown away. 2022 I am still blown away.
I was 7 years old in 1976-77 and got Fly by Night on 8-track. I was in a pretty music free home, and RUSH blew my mind. I bought every album (usually as they were unboxing) but didn’t get to see them until Clockwork Angels…through blurry eyes I watched MY band live and will never forget it. Every album, played as a soundtrack to my life. I am so glad to have lived while RUSH grew with me….I cannot imagine any band having a bigger influence. I am glad you are enjoying them (better late than never). RUSH fans love to meet other RUSH fans…usually an instant connection and just appreciation for these three artists!
What is crazy is seeing someone seeing this TALENTED BAND FOR THE FIRST TIME. LOL. They were my generations music. 1979 was the first time I saw them in concert. NOW THAT'S SOMETHING TO SEE. LIVE. YOU HAVE JUST WITNESS THE GREATNESS OF RUSH. BEST 3 MAN BAND EVER.
That was super fun! Believe it or not, Geddy Lee's voice is actually a bit lower by this time (1981) than it was when the band started !🤣Since RUSH had a 40 plus years career with about 25 albums, I think it would be too daunting a task to react to everything from start to finish. I would do a couple from the debut album, "RUSH", ("Working Man" and "Finding My Way") , and then the RUSH ARMY will guide you from there! Enjoy the rush! ☮

My favorite part of this song is when Geddy plays that synth riff, Alex joins him on the guitar & once he goes into his solo, Geddy plays that riff on the bass. I don’t think I’ve seen/heard people appreciate that segment. Usually they are amazed by Neil’s drum fill. Don’t get me wrong! It’s absolute killer!
This single was the first record I ever owned. Got hooked on drinking Dr. Pepper when I was 12 because they had a contest where one of the prizes was a free single from Sam the Record Man (big Canadian record chain store). First time winning, I picked up Tom Sawyer.

The first time I hear a Rush song, I just hear those drums. The next time I listen, I focus on the crazy bass lines. Then the guitar, then the lyrics. It's only after about a half dozen times, that I can really hear the totality of the interplay between them. This is three genius level, master-class musicians putting on a CLINIC. Peart in his prime was probably the finest rock drummer on the planet. Geddy was firmly ensconced in the top five living bassists. And Alex was at least in the top twenty guitarists. The odds of three world-class musicians (A) meeting each other, and (B) forming a band... are millions to one against. The only other time I can think of, that this caliber of talent was gathered together as an act... was in Led Zeppelin.
Yes, you're talking about "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness, from 2003. And you're right, he also has that upper-register vocal range, like Geddy Lee. But Geddy is a better singer, clearly. I love The Darkness too, but they are a "Retro-Rock" band and they wear their influences on their sleeve (they way Rush did, back in 1974-1977).
Rush's smartest decision was by the third record, or so, to "stop being Zeppelin hosers" and concoct their own take on experimental rock music. Honestly I couldn't get offered enough money to listen to retro-rock bands, what a colossal waste of time imho. I hated when Oasis did it to become world famous, and I could never be tempted to check out "new acts" that oooh they sound so authentic! Like so-and-so from 1972! @@katskillz, what do you think of Greta Van Fleet? I’ve listened to them and I find that they are improving, as song writers, beyond their initial Led Zeppelin-copy status. Pretty good music, the “retro” sound notwithstanding.
Also wanted to add: Geddy naturally gets a lot of attention due to him handling so many things at once, but the other two guys (Alex on guitar and the late Neil Peart on drums) are two of the most well-respected and talented people on their instruments of all time!
Rush was a great Canadian rock band formed in 1968. The band's style changed over the years, from a blues-inspired hard rock beginning, later moving into progressive rock, then a period marked by heavy use of synthesizers, before returning to guitar-driven hard rock since the end of the 1980s. They had a lot of great songs such as "Not Fade Away", "In The Mood", "Working Man", "Bad Boy", "Fly By Night", "Limelight", "Red Barchetta", "The Spirit Of Radio", "The Trees", "Subdivisions", "Closer To The Heart", "Xanadu", "Anthem" etc.
The lyrics are as good as the music. This song hits on every level. I’d recommend doing highlight songs of theirs. It’s a long and variable discography. They are more far out than Zeppelin and some of their songs are long, intense and complex but that’s what Rush fans like. Rush fans will tell you to go chronologically but that’s a big commitment. You seem to be at the point where a wide overview of the Classic Rock genre would be best. I’d say do different stuff and dive in deeper later. Maybe try “Clear as the Driven Snow” by Doobie Brothers, that’s a deep track by a major classic rock band. There is more great music from from Hank Williams to Nirvana than you can possibly hear and most of it is pretty obscure. Most people remember songs that were played on the radio and most of the best songs were not on the radio. Thanks man you’re doing a great job.
The Doobie Brothers , now there's another really fun rabbit hole to go down. With the different lead vocalists, their sounds are amazing. Happy to see a new Rush fan being born! Arguably three of the most influential musicians in rock. Since you say you prefer the live stuff, I would recommend Working Man Live in Cleveland. This tour is from 2011, but the song is their first single in the US. It's also the song that unleashed Rush in the US. Although, this live version is different from the original, it is a great performance and a fan favorite. Like I said on the last video, there isn't a live performance out there that isnt amazing. Looking forward to watching your Rush reactions. Also, yes, as someone else stated, each decade, you will hear different styles of music. 70s first 3 albums are them finding their sound. The first album has a different drummer, so while it's a great album, it is not the Rush you hear on every other album. Their second 3 albums have longer, more conceptual type albums, although none of these are full concept albums. These three albums, imho are perfect and really gave them the freedom to do whatever the wanted. The follow 3 albums, are again, imho, perfect albums, but these are shorter more radio friendly songs, like the two you have listened. Although, theyve never had much radio play. Then we move more into the 80s and their heavy synth sound. Some fans dislike this era and some prefer it. I love all of them because they are different but always really great musically and the lyrics are more about the human condition and philosophy and all the lyrics read like poetry. Then 90s, they cut back the synth and went back to hard rock, and same eith the 2000s. Also, Rush only had one album that was a complete concept piece and this was the last album they released, Clockwork Angels. It is simply a masterpiece.
Worked barricade security for their concert in Houston, they didn't want us to bother the fans at all "even if they climbed the stage". Also we were ask to sit and not have them staring at the back of our heads. I was front of Geddy Lee, I turned my chair in the pit and just watched in awe. I remember the professor actually coming out and handing drum sticks to a little girl being held by her parents. HE NEVER interacted with fans. WAS A GOOD NIGHT!!
Just imagine growing up with all this going on at once. All the great music from the 70-80s. I was lucky. I remember signing that record out in the 70s and playing it to death. AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Doors just to start
Check out the song headlong flight from the clockwork Angels album. It was released in 2012 which was their final album. They were in their 60s at the time, and this song rocks harder than anything since the 80s in their catalog in my opinion. Brilliant stuff.
The companion video for this is "Limelight", which is equally amazing - highly recommend. Ironically, when Rush first started, they were pretty much dismissed and ridiculed ("sounds like a frightened rat singing" etc.) but they pervailed to become one of the most prolific bands of all time.
I was so fortunate to grow up in the 80s and the second concert I saw out of hundreds was Rush. Damn that show is amazing. I'm still electrified by that performance. And I'm electrified every time I give them since!
Watching Geddy play bass with one hand and keyboard with the other, the using his nose to move the microphone…all while Erick plays guitar with two hands, and a sound board with his feet - that’s the LIVE experience.
You've now entered a DEEP hole when listening to Rush. All three are masters of their craft. None better. Besides Tom Sawyer, another favorite of mine is The Spirit of Radio. The genre changes in that song alone will blow your mind. Listen to the studio version.
I know you said you like studio cuts . But with Rush the magic is live. When you can really see what their doing . When you can see Geddy playing bass . Singing and playing keyboards sometimes with his feet. And Neil used to have a massive drum kit with chimes & bells and blocks and triangles. But then he went to that electric xylophone and it can make all those sounds. There's nothing they can do in studio that they can't do even better on stage.
After a 40-year career, where do you start with RUSH? “The Spirit if Radio”, “Subdivisions”, “YYZ (Live from Rio)”, “2112”…early, late…it’s all so good! But for my money, I’d suggest yet another song from MOVING PICTURES, yes, the same album with “Limelight” and “Tom Sawyer”, and that is “Red Barchetta”. Yes, it’s a personal favorite, but it’ll absolutely blow you away!
I was lucky enough to meet the band in their studio in the eighties as an awestruck teenager through contacts of my father. Neil Peart wrote a couple of books which are amazing when he was dealing with the grief of losing his wife. A Farewell to Kings was the first piece of vinyl I ever bought with money earned from my Saturday job, and still have it to this day. a favourite album…

Okay, for me, it doesn't matter where you start. When it comes to Rush, they're all good but if I was gonna choose I would start from the beginning. And go through it all cause that way. The Drummer, Neil Peart, is referred to as "The Professor" and is most drummers favorite drummer. RIP Sir. Alex Lifeson was one of Eddie Van Halen's favorite guitarists. Time and tempo changes are the norm for Rush. They are Progressive Rock legends!
Rush is the thinking mans rock. this track along with "Working Man" (studio track not the reggae version) are my fave Rush songs. Working Man, by the way, is the track that exploded them across the world.

I always recommend starting from the beginning and going through their whole catalogue chronologically. Just remember, their first album (1974) has a different drummer. The drummer you just watched (Neil Peart) joined the band on the second album and stayed through their whole career. Oh, and Neil writes the lyrics…he’s called The Professor for good reason. Don't fool yourself thinking they could only pull this off in the studio. When they played live, Geddy Lee sang, played keyboards, pedals and bass, at the same time. One of the best concerts I ever saw was the Moving Pictures show. Blew my mind.
Lol, yes to what everyone else already said. My favorite will always be “Freewill” because it influenced me as a teenager - of all the awesome things you can say about these three musicians, the lyrics of their songs were thought-provoking and the music delivered their messages perfectly :-)
I am always amazed that there are people who have not heard Tom Sawyer. or Rush, easily the greatest band who ever walked onto a stage, And just so you are aware, the live versions are as good as the studio versions. As someone who has played drums in numerous Rush Tribute bands, there is NOTHING as exhilarating as RUSH!
I saw them in Birmingham, Al in 1986. Awesome music and light show. Tom Sawyer is my favorite. Ph yeah, BOC opened for Rush. Blue Oyster Cult. Awesome.

Neil Peart was the brain of Rush….
John Bonham was the heart of Led Zeppelin… both were fantastic but hard to compare.
The most underrated part of Rush is their lyrics. Everyone knows they’re great musicians.

There’s a reason Neal Peart was called “The Professor”. He put on a clinic every time he played those drums. Best rock drummer of the modern era, IMO.
I use to be in a 3 person band with my brother and a friend. We always aspired to try to play a Rush song and we eventually bought tickets to a show to see how they actually pull off the sounds. I'm not lying when I tell you these guys sounded better than the studio version, they replicated the sounds perfectly while throwing in unique phrasings specifically to that concert, and they played for 3 and a half hours straight. I've been to a lot of concerts and can tell you far and away Rush was the best concert I've ever attended. It impressed me on a level that's never been replicated before going to that concert and certainly not after it as well.

Starting at the beginning would be best context wise. There are several different eras of Rush's style and it can seem disjointed if you're jumping around 40+ years of music without understanding how they got from point A to point B, if you know what I mean.
Fair warning! Geddy's (singer) about 30 here and his voice has lowered from the early days.😂 Young Geddy vocals can cut glass! But since you're loving it now I've got no doubts you'll love the earlier stuff too.

Little known Rush fact, Alex Lifeson added guitar to Fu Manchu's Il Mostro Atomico.
The great thing about Rush is that they play live with the same perfection as the studio versions so in many cases the live versions are preferable. Like YYZ in Rio because the crowd absolutely adds to the energy of this song and Rush nails the performance.

In this song, Geddy Lee plays Bass and keyboards along with singing. PLaying live, he does all 3 at the same time. I know you've said you listed to studio version before live, but check out Xanadu. In that song, Alex Lifeson plays a 6- and 12-string- guitar, Geddy Lee plays bass and 12-string guitar, keyboards, foot pedals, and sings, all while "The Professor" Neil Peart plays ALL sorts of percussion instruments. It's crazy to watch. I'd also completely recommend the official live version La Villa Strangiato; each musician puts on a show of virtuosity in that has to be heard to be believed.
To really appreciate their talent; you have to see them do this song live. Yep, 3 people, playing this song dead on perfect at every show they played it.
3 guys, 4 instruments. The resulting product is beyond awesome! No backing tracks, no fancy electronics or auto tune. Just pure talent.

"Tom Sawyer" turned me onto RUSH many years ago. 1981 was the 1st time I saw them tour. At 65 years old, they're my favorite band of all time.
I used to work VIP for a Concert place that used to be called Nissan Pavilion & I got to “wait on” these guys….Extremely Chill & Down to Earth!!! Oh & AMAZING TIPPERS!!!
So, for the purpose of recording the video, you do see the players do different things at different times. However, in live shows, you will see these three guys do everything at once. Yes, they are that amazing 👏

The song that challenges even the drummer who wrote it, every single time he played it. Neil repeatedly mentions how difficult it was to play Tom Sawyer on a nightly basis. Their seminal hit, but BRILLIANT.

In 1981 I was 16 years old. Moving Pictures had just been released. I went to Sam the Record Man and bought it. When I heard Tom Sawyer I was completely blown away. 2022 I am still blown away.
I was 7 years old in 1976-77 and got Fly by Night on 8-track. I was in a pretty music free home, and RUSH blew my mind. I bought every album (usually as they were unboxing) but didn’t get to see them until Clockwork Angels…through blurry eyes I watched MY band live and will never forget it. Every album, played as a soundtrack to my life. I am so glad to have lived while RUSH grew with me….I cannot imagine any band having a bigger influence. I am glad you are enjoying them (better late than never). RUSH fans love to meet other RUSH fans…usually an instant connection and just appreciation for these three artists!
What is crazy is seeing someone seeing this TALENTED BAND FOR THE FIRST TIME. LOL. They were my generations music. 1979 was the first time I saw them in concert. NOW THAT'S SOMETHING TO SEE. LIVE. YOU HAVE JUST WITNESS THE GREATNESS OF RUSH. BEST 3 MAN BAND EVER.

That was super fun! Believe it or not, Geddy Lee's voice is actually a bit lower by this time (1981) than it was when the band started !🤣Since RUSH had a 40 plus years career with about 25 albums, I think it would be too daunting a task to react to everything from start to finish. I would do a couple from the debut album, "RUSH", ("Working Man" and "Finding My Way") , and then the RUSH ARMY will guide you from there! Enjoy the rush! ☮

My favorite part of this song is when Geddy plays that synth riff, Alex joins him on the guitar & once he goes into his solo, Geddy plays that riff on the bass. I don’t think I’ve seen/heard people appreciate that segment. Usually they are amazed by Neil’s drum fill. Don’t get me wrong! It’s absolute killer!
This single was the first record I ever owned. Got hooked on drinking Dr. Pepper when I was 12 because they had a contest where one of the prizes was a free single from Sam the Record Man (big Canadian record chain store). First time winning, I picked up Tom Sawyer.
This song to me is the quintessential Rush song, ideal introduction for new listeners best summing up the musical style.

The first time I hear a Rush song, I just hear those drums. The next time I listen, I focus on the crazy bass lines. Then the guitar, then the lyrics. It's only after about a half dozen times, that I can really hear the totality of the interplay between them. This is three genius level, master-class musicians putting on a CLINIC.
Peart in his prime was probably the finest rock drummer on the planet. Geddy was firmly ensconced in the top five living bassists. And Alex was at least in the top twenty guitarists. The odds of three world-class musicians (A) meeting each other, and (B) forming a band... are millions to one against. The only other time I can think of, that this caliber of talent was gathered together as an act... was in Led Zeppelin.

Yes, you're talking about "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" by The Darkness, from 2003. And you're right, he also has that upper-register vocal range, like Geddy Lee. But Geddy is a better singer, clearly. I love The Darkness too, but they are a "Retro-Rock" band and they wear their influences on their sleeve (they way Rush did, back in 1974-1977).
Rush's smartest decision was by the third record, or so, to "stop being Zeppelin hosers" and concoct their own take on experimental rock music.
Honestly I couldn't get offered enough money to listen to retro-rock bands, what a colossal waste of time imho. I hated when Oasis did it to become world famous, and I could never be tempted to check out "new acts" that oooh they sound so authentic! Like so-and-so from 1972!

@@katskillz, what do you think of Greta Van Fleet? I’ve listened to them and I find that they are improving, as song writers, beyond their initial Led Zeppelin-copy status. Pretty good music, the “retro” sound notwithstanding.
Also wanted to add: Geddy naturally gets a lot of attention due to him handling so many things at once, but the other two guys (Alex on guitar and the late Neil Peart on drums) are two of the most well-respected and talented people on their instruments of all time!
I've been on the RUSH journey since 1976. They are such an amazing band.

Rush was a great Canadian rock band formed in 1968. The band's style changed over the years, from a blues-inspired hard rock beginning, later moving into progressive rock, then a period marked by heavy use of synthesizers, before returning to guitar-driven hard rock since the end of the 1980s. They had a lot of great songs such as "Not Fade Away", "In The Mood", "Working Man", "Bad Boy", "Fly By Night", "Limelight", "Red Barchetta", "The Spirit Of Radio", "The Trees", "Subdivisions", "Closer To The Heart", "Xanadu", "Anthem" etc.
The lyrics are as good as the music. This song hits on every level. I’d recommend doing highlight songs of theirs. It’s a long and variable discography. They are more far out than Zeppelin and some of their songs are long, intense and complex but that’s what Rush fans like. Rush fans will tell you to go chronologically but that’s a big commitment. You seem to be at the point where a wide overview of the Classic Rock genre would be best. I’d say do different stuff and dive in deeper later. Maybe try “Clear as the Driven Snow” by Doobie Brothers, that’s a deep track by a major classic rock band. There is more great music from from Hank Williams to Nirvana than you can possibly hear and most of it is pretty obscure. Most people remember songs that were played on the radio and most of the best songs were not on the radio. Thanks man you’re doing a great job.

Happy to see a new Rush fan being born! Arguably three of the most influential musicians in rock. Since you say you prefer the live stuff, I would recommend Working Man Live in Cleveland. This tour is from 2011, but the song is their first single in the US. It's also the song that unleashed Rush in the US. Although, this live version is different from the original, it is a great performance and a fan favorite. Like I said on the last video, there isn't a live performance out there that isnt amazing.
Looking forward to watching your Rush reactions. Also, yes, as someone else stated, each decade, you will hear different styles of music. 70s first 3 albums are them finding their sound. The first album has a different drummer, so while it's a great album, it is not the Rush you hear on every other album. Their second 3 albums have longer, more conceptual type albums, although none of these are full concept albums. These three albums, imho are perfect and really gave them the freedom to do whatever the wanted. The follow 3 albums, are again, imho, perfect albums, but these are shorter more radio friendly songs, like the two you have listened. Although, theyve never had much radio play. Then we move more into the 80s and their heavy synth sound. Some fans dislike this era and some prefer it. I love all of them because they are different but always really great musically and the lyrics are more about the human condition and philosophy and all the lyrics read like poetry. Then 90s, they cut back the synth and went back to hard rock, and same eith the 2000s. Also, Rush only had one album that was a complete concept piece and this was the last album they released, Clockwork Angels. It is simply a masterpiece.

Worked barricade security for their concert in Houston, they didn't want us to bother the fans at all "even if they climbed the stage". Also we were ask to sit and not have them staring at the back of our heads. I was front of Geddy Lee, I turned my chair in the pit and just watched in awe. I remember the professor actually coming out and handing drum sticks to a little girl being held by her parents. HE NEVER interacted with fans. WAS A GOOD NIGHT!!
Just imagine growing up with all this going on at once. All the great music from the 70-80s. I was lucky. I remember signing that record out in the 70s and playing it to death.

Check out the song headlong flight from the clockwork Angels album. It was released in 2012 which was their final album. They were in their 60s at the time, and this song rocks harder than anything since the 80s in their catalog in my opinion. Brilliant stuff.

The companion video for this is "Limelight", which is equally amazing - highly recommend. Ironically, when Rush first started, they were pretty much dismissed and ridiculed ("sounds like a frightened rat singing" etc.) but they pervailed to become one of the most prolific bands of all time.

I was so fortunate to grow up in the 80s and the second concert I saw out of hundreds was Rush. Damn that show is amazing. I'm still electrified by that performance. And I'm electrified every time I give them since!

Watching Geddy play bass with one hand and keyboard with the other, the using his nose to move the microphone…all while Erick plays guitar with two hands, and a sound board with his feet - that’s the LIVE experience.
You've now entered a DEEP hole when listening to Rush. All three are masters of their craft. None better. Besides Tom Sawyer, another favorite of mine is The Spirit of Radio. The genre changes in that song alone will blow your mind. Listen to the studio version.

I watch Tom Sawyer reactions for the faces people make at the big drum part. It's the moment when they realize theyre in the presence of greatness.
I know you said you like studio cuts . But with Rush the magic is live. When you can really see what their doing . When you can see Geddy playing bass . Singing and playing keyboards sometimes with his feet. And Neil used to have a massive drum kit with chimes & bells and blocks and triangles. But then he went to that electric xylophone and it can make all those sounds. There's nothing they can do in studio that they can't do even better on stage.
I saw RUSH live back in the 80's twice. Grace Under Pressure and The Power Windows tours. Greatest live show.

After a 40-year career, where do you start with RUSH? “The Spirit if Radio”, “Subdivisions”, “YYZ (Live from Rio)”, “2112”…early, late…it’s all so good! But for my money, I’d suggest yet another song from MOVING PICTURES, yes, the same album with “Limelight” and “Tom Sawyer”, and that is “Red Barchetta”. Yes, it’s a personal favorite, but it’ll absolutely blow you away!

I was lucky enough to meet the band in their studio in the eighties as an awestruck teenager through contacts of my father. Neil Peart wrote a couple of books which are amazing when he was dealing with the grief of losing his wife. A Farewell to Kings was the first piece of vinyl I ever bought with money earned from my Saturday job, and still have it to this day. a favourite album…

Love your reaction. I’ve been a hardcore Rush fan for over 35 years. Very happy to see after all these years seeing people as excited about greatest band ever. I would recommend Xanadu live from Exit Stage Left. Try that and see what you think. Try not to pause it.

The Drummer, Neil Peart, is referred to as "The Professor" and is most drummers favorite drummer. RIP Sir. Alex Lifeson was one of Eddie Van Halen's favorite guitarists. Time and tempo changes are the norm for Rush. They are Progressive Rock legends!

Rush is the thinking mans rock. this track along with "Working Man" (studio track not the reggae version) are my fave Rush songs. Working Man, by the way, is the track that exploded them across the world.

I always recommend starting from the beginning and going through their whole catalogue chronologically. Just remember, their first album (1974) has a different drummer. The drummer you just watched (Neil Peart) joined the band on the second album and stayed through their whole career. Oh, and Neil writes the lyrics…he’s called The Professor for good reason. Don't fool yourself thinking they could only pull this off in the studio. When they played live, Geddy Lee sang, played keyboards, pedals and bass, at the same time. One of the best concerts I ever saw was the Moving Pictures show. Blew my mind.
In this video, Geddy does do the vocals as a separate track, you can tell by how the video changes perspective.
Lol, yes to what everyone else already said. My favorite will always be “Freewill” because it influenced me as a teenager - of all the awesome things you can say about these three musicians, the lyrics of their songs were thought-provoking and the music delivered their messages perfectly :-)

I am always amazed that there are people who have not heard Tom Sawyer. or Rush, easily the greatest band who ever walked onto a stage, And just so you are aware, the live versions are as good as the studio versions. As someone who has played drums in numerous Rush Tribute bands, there is NOTHING as exhilarating as RUSH!
