Cowon Plenue D2 Super Review - POWERFUL Audio

- Many audio players have tried to challenge my humble Sony Walkman, and many have fallen. At least for my preferences. But Cowon's Plenue D2 is off to a good start, with massive battery life. Let's unbox it and see if the D2 stands up.

Perfect camera angle great review. Welldone bro keep it up
Phew!
I have the Plenue D1, yes the UI is far from the best, yes the screen is shit in 2019, but guys it have such a nice sound and battery life, plus his look is awesome and the device is compact, if you're for an output with plenty of power and battery life this the beast to posses.
I just got this divise and if you set it on your own preference there is only one thing I can say .... holy mother of god. the sound that comes out of this thing is outstanding
😱
lol .yeah that was the expression on my face when I heard the sound. thanks for your advise
I fall in love with Cowon sound quality, I dont know why, but I just dont like sound signature of Astell and Kern
Cowon's UI has been their biggest issue for years. But the sound quality and battery have been their best qualities. The previous D model had 32GB of internal memory and claimed 90 hours of battery life. This is up to 64gb and added balanced out. Battery at 45 hours is still better than 90% of the DAP's out now. My Cayin N3 is about 12 hours, my Hiby R3 is about 10 to 11 hours. Had the old Cowon X7, was $300.00 back in 2010. It did do more, music, video, pictures, FM radio, calculator, and few more things. Habd about 45 hours of battery life, was supporting FLAC and other lossless formats back then, and had a 160gb hard drive. It suffered from the weird UI as well.
90 hours, dang. Are you OK with the life of 12-hour players?
@@SuperReview Not really, but it is what it is with the DAP market and what I can afford. Like the two I use, the Hiby R3 has balanced output as well. The Cayin was 150.00, the Hiby got for 167.00 just before Christmas. Would be grateful if They would have these at 20 to 24 hours.
I have it, and I am happy with my Cowon Plenue D2, a very compact device, the size of a pack of cigarettes, but which has an autonomy of 30 hours in hi-res audio and 50 hours in 328kbps mp3. It supports DSD files in addition to all known formats. Its body is made of premium materials with metal on the upper part, isometric cut. A Dap that has an internal memory of 64GB and a slot for microSD memory of up to 128GB. No tidal, no Spotify, no bluethoot. It's a Beautiful Dap that updates your music library every time you turn it on automatically. A cool!
love cowon D series players. got this one for many years now and i love it. software takes some time to get used to and the biggest issue i have with it that it does not support bookmarks (unlike previous cowons i owned). in any case, its a really nice player and well thought through. i love the fact that i can controll it blind via physical buttons without taking it out of my pocket all the time.
Had a horrendous experience with Sony customer service (so bad that I will never buy anything from them again) so looking for a good alternative to a Walkman. Thanks for this review
New DAP 😍. Same as you, i just want a DAP - just for listening music, who needs android or wifi? More unnecessary functions, more battery drain (and lagging too)
I think I need to do more DAPs.
@@SuperReview When you used Walkman A45, you will be disappointed almost every players software (not android players). Sony've made a great UI, smooth, and amazing battery life. There for something smoother, better sound quality and powerful over A45. Its definitely Walkman ZX300(64gb) or ZX300A (16gb)
Nah with out Tidal Spotify it's useless! I love my Fiio x5 mk3 it does the lot! Loading your own music on seems dated! Long live streaming audio..
@@SuperReview That sounds great.
@@NathanChisholm041 I kinda agree. I don't have online access. I have to find the music, purchase, then load it on my device. Kinda wish my M3K was online but I do love the 2 week battery life.
Hi, thanks for the video. I would get this D2 after 12 years of J3. Does it support playlists files ? if yes, which extensions ?
Thanks 😊
The hunt goes on.
Yup. Keep waiting, some company will make the player you want soon. I did the Fiio M3K
Unfortunately
I have confirmed with audible that you can’t play audible on it.
Thanks a lot for review, very detailed and everything on the case. Wonderful explain of pros and cons. Again thanks a lot.
Loving the reviews
I used cowon D2 for about 10 or 12 years :) and it still working nice! And for today I have changed a battery. :D (old one works about 4 -5 hrs, but should about 72hrs for audio). So, it like new again!!! :D
How easy to swap batteries?
@@SuperReview for Cowon D2 - 3 small bolts and less then 5 minutes. (really easy)
Remember when cowon was the king of DAPs?
The smartphone market ate them up quick
Still have and use my old D2 on the stereo. Its weird not being connected with wifi but it works and have awesome sound
I get that it's packing a lot of horsepower for pushing high end can and IEMs, but I'm sorry for over $300 you'd think they'd put a better screen/UI in it as well. When the market is full of these players now, it's small things like these that will steer me towards another brand that can provide. I'm even willing to sacrifice a tiny bit of battery life if it means that the UI is cleaner, faster and more responsive.
I agree but also I hope they dont use android and keep making their own.
Ok, can you give some other better options for that price?
Tbh when you want to go the direct DAP route without all the extra features you tend to tradeoff for the UI. Even the proprietary OS ones are pretty much just android or linux-ish (more or less android), and when you go that route it does trade off for battery life because it requires more general purpose hardware to run. This properly has a very weak CPU and they can't really bother to have an attractive UI as a result of this.
@@Da.A.F ZX300A
Hmm, looks like something Arcos designed. LOL. On another note, everyone has their pet peeves, and as much as I loved my old Sony Walkman, that proprietary connection bugged the crap out of me more than, let’s say, battery life (as long as that’s reasonable).
Great reviews and enjoy your content!
This video just sold me on the Sony Walkman. Good review.
Which model exactly?
I load my original Cowon with a lot of different music I love and set it to all tracks and shuffle. the dedicated 1st track/last track and volume up/down play/ pause buttons are the best!
How do the buttons go to first track / last track?
@@SuperReview sorry next/last....my bad. Great job! Your reviews are well done.
@@michaelculhane7227 Thanks for the clarification, thought there might be some secret functionality.
hey man! i love your reviews! they are extremely engaging and informative.... love all the way from india! keep up the good work dude!
Thanks Debayan ✌️ Any other DAPs you want to see reviewed?
@@SuperReview i was just thinking about the fiio m5 vs the shanling m0.... will u pls review both of them when the m5 comes out? i think they are each other's biggest competitors! thanks for the reply man.... i hope u become very successful on youtube :)
Mine just died. I loved everything about it: affordable, wonderful sound, warm deep bass, compact, incredible battery life, and simple interface, not battery-consuming Android.... now I just don't know what could replace it...

@@SuperReview Oh thank you ! It actually looks great !
How many years last?
The track buttons are fine. You suppose to hold the player bottom up while it is in your hand and you are not looking to the screen. Then the headphone cable comes from bottom of your hand and do not interfere around. And in this position you can skip the tracks forward pressing the button which is closes t to the botton edge to the player (which you are holding upside down). In this way it is most handiest player i have ever used, very easy to skip tracks through while not using the screen at all and very easy to find next track button whne the player is in your pocket.
You can change the time it takes to turn off after pause.
Please do that if it bothers a lot
I'm glad I found this channel, so many great reviews here, nice! I'm thinking of getting a new DAP very soon, the D2 certainly is a contender, but the laggy screen is keeping me away at the moment. Could you recommend something simliar to the D2 in terms of sound quality but with a more trouble-free handling? Right now I am tending to the Cowon Plenue R2 or Plenue J. Sound and handling are the most important things to me and I prefer a rather flat and but detailed sound. I don't even need bluetooh or wi-fi, since I don't stream and only use headphones.
Honestly, most DAPs sound the same to me. Under $200, my fave is a Sony A45.
so this sound the same like the sony a45?
and sony nwa 45 or 55 is better in sound?
Dude! Great video as usual. You should try Ibasso . I use ibasso dx120 with ibasso t01s. This pair of DAP and headphones is GREAT. The sound gives me satisfaction every day. Also these are queit cheap
That does look pretty cool.
Do you still have the Ibasso dx120?
How reliable is it?
Have you had any software or hardware issue?
It's an orientation issue. You mentioned that the headphones jacks aren't at the bottom. Well, because they're at the top you'd be putting the D2 into your pockets bottom first. So the track buttons would then work as you'd expect (top = back, bottom = forward). Also, another reason they're located at the top is because it allows you to place the player on a table upright, if need be ,to view the track data while listening.
I still prefer to have headphone jacks on the bottom of devices, BUT I've totally come around on the "reverse" track skipping buttons -- up = back, down = forward makes total sense if you consider that a track listing almost always reads top-to-bottom, and the next track is "below" the current track.
It seems a good addition to a phone to those who have a phone without SD card like iPhone.
the up/down track button really just orientates to a vertical track list; like what you would find on the back of a CD case.
Yep, I've actually learned to actually PREFER this layout to the more typical (at least in the US) up = next track config.
I think the Sony is the best all rounder , the clear audio plus is really good for my mp3 files
It has a pretty solid UI -- I have some quibbles, but it's very usable.
it was a really nice and informative review, as usual. Also props for explaining and showing various UI features! i think when people are deciding for a dap, the UI plays a very big role. But unfortunately, not a lot of reviewers do focus on the UI
I think design in general doesn't get a lot of attention in reviews, apart from superficial visual aesthetics.
I have the D and it is more than good enough hooked up to a top fiio E 12 amp and a pair of Focal studio pro headphones
Lovely review and I'm thinking about getting the Cowan. How do you compare the D3 with the A&K SR25 II in terms of sound quality?
ruclips.net/video/ART7yv3cnss/видео.html
This reminded me of Cowon D2 plus from decades ago. Still have that lying around. Going to start that little ugly duckling and see hows the sound now that I have good headphones.
So is it supposed to look like a lighter or vape pen? Because it sure does
I think it's a cool side effect.
I have a Cowon M2 and love it for its battery life, sound quality, etc. But I really enjoy being able to bookmark mp3 audiobooks. Does the Plenue D2 have that function?
Not sure, not something I ever tried.
You flipped it! Yes! I tried watching your last review upside down and honestly I liked it better that way. Now I don't have to do that anymore thanks.
Alright cool, glad this works better. The angle is so slight that I didn't think it would be a problem, but thanks to a lot of people like you letting me know it was.
That is a beautiful design. In most cases that would be way too much width but I think its really compliments the entire shape. Nice!
I wouldn't mind rounded corners, but yeah, it's a nice look -- no confusing it for a phone, too.
Cowon was always first in Hi-Res audio devices, still leading. All of you don't know the technical details and capabilities of their devices, these are not "Sony walkmans" or whatever, these are not toys and smartphones. You see the highest quality audio devices from them not only in built, but reproduction too with the lowest distortions. Screen sharpness, wifi or bluetooth are completely in a different section, not in audio quality. This is one of their unbeatable audio player. Simple.
If that's a difference you appreciate, 👍 I have a bunch of DAPs, for the most part they all sound the same to me. If I were to say anything sounds different about the Cowons, they seem slightly rolled off in the upper treble.
@@SuperReview Actually, you're right. Also, I guesss Cowon just a bit far with their prices. Understand 0.0005 againts 0.001, but....don't really think there is anyone who could tell the difference. Noname chinese brands are really coming up to be honest.
Its too expensive what about fiio m11 what's do you thinks about it thanks man for replaying
What's the most you'd spend for a DAP?
Mostafa Hozayen
The m11 is more expensive than this.
I have the old Cowon D which I loved for its size, battery life and sound. However, I couldn’t play audible files on it and I missed bluetooth. Can you play audible books on the D2?
To be honest, I don't know -- I haven't tried Audible books.
PSA: if your using a cowon, go to the settings and go to jet effect and scroll over to bbe and set it to 10 mach3bass to 5 and turn on mp enhance. You can thank me later.

Hi! Awsome review. I bought the Cowon D2 and I am loving it. I first bought it to use them !as a combo" with some IEMs but I think I gonna buy a truly audiophile solution; The byerdynamic DT 1990 Pro. My question is: once I am going to need an amp would this DAP be a good solution? Would it "work" on it?. thanks!
Might work on the Cowon without an amp, especially if you can get a balanced cable for it.
It’s impossible to find the d2 or d3 anywhereeeee now 😭😭 and I really want the d3
Is this louder than your preferred Sony one? I heard that Sony has to started to limit the loudness of their players (at least in Europe). Thank you.
Yeah, it's louder, especially on the balanced output. I thought I mentioned that in the video. And yes, Sony has a volume limit on EU models of their Walkman.
DO YOU KNOW IF THIS DAP WORKS WITH 256 GB OR 512 GB MICRO SD? THANKS!
I think it caps out at 128Gb.
Is this CTIA jack 3,5mm compatible? I mean is this compatible with in-line controller audio cable?
You definitely deserve more subscriber!
I used to have a Cowon D a long time ago and was impressed by the SQ. Ordered the Plenue D2 today and I am curious about how it will sound. UI has not changed since 15 years ago it seems :-). Having some trouble in finding a suitable (balanced) headphone cable in the Netherlands though. Any suggestions???

I’m just looking for a player I can attach to my home stereo and get hi res music that way.
Should do the trick, but may be overkill?
maybe then it's better to get something with wifi and connect to spotify?
Could you possibly review Sabbat E12? (wireless in-ears)
automatic 1 min shut down doesnt matter. you can change that at settings menu bro. 3 min 5 min etc
If you enable sleep mode, it'll go to sleep instead of power off completely -- much less disruptive.
It’s in the running to replace my PONO player whenever it stops working. I love to use the balanced out feature.
Will that play any FLAC files? Or does it use its own format?
The UI looks like a 6th form computer studies project. Unforgivable. But audiophiles will no doubt put up with it.
It's an aesthetic.
had a cowon x7 for close to 10 years now ... recently suffered a knock and the screen has gone ... the ui was basically a joke and the touch screen (rest its soul) was bad to the point that anyone trying to use the player that wasn't me couldn't because they didn't know where to press to make the player do what they wanted (the activation zones never seemed to align with their corresponding icons) - after 10 years though you get pretty good at it
after that little tangent im just going to say that the x7 was the best music player i ever had even with its quirks ... battery life, ability to play lossless and the quality with which it all was sounded ... it did what it did really well even if it was a bit socially maladjusted. the item reviewed above looks like its similarly slightly autistic nephew ... quite excited
Ha ha, sometimes a quirky over-achiever is endearing.
Today i received the PD2. In comparison to the PD(1) the on/off button is somewhat loose and rattles - do other owners of the PD2 experience the same? Thinking about exchanging it. Thanks!
I never noticed it, but I just checked mine and it rattles a bit if I shake it. Wouldn't bother me.
Where can I even buy this? I only found some third party sellers on Amazon offering it at inflated prices. Was there a recall or something?
I think $300ish is the retail price. amzn.to/2WPuOZE
Try new walkman a55 see what are the improvement, any change on sound siganture, or check fiio DAP.
I like this better than the two Fiio DAPs I've used so far.
Hey man, still waiting on the HiFi boys osv3 to arrive as I ordered through drop. In the meantime I was wondering your thoughts on the Sony aw55 Walkman. I recently purchased one and I like it a lot, but it's the only real dap I've owned so I don't have anything to base my thoughts off of. It was between a Sony dap and a fiio dap. I do like what I see in the fiio products but I got the aw55 based on how much you like the -45 and -105 and I'm enjoying it.
I haven't used the A55 much, but seems basically the same as A45, but with a newer / faster processor. Great little player, loads of battery.
Hi there - great review! Which IEM's do you suggest for the D2? Coming from d(1) with Final E2000/Beoplay H6 2nd and would like to step up (a lot). I'd be interested in a budget and non budget option. Favorite genres: jazz, rock, folk, independent, electronic. just your personal preference - any suggestion appreciated...

I have the Plenue D and it sounds great. Can anyone who has heard both say if the D2 is really a worthwhile upgrade over the D in terms of sound quality?
I haven't heard the original D, but I expect they sound nearly identical. I really don't hear difference between most players.
@@SuperReview Thanks. Guess I'll wait til I can find a good deal on one then. However, I haven't owned a lot of other DAPs but I definitely notice Cowon players sound better than others I've tried (owned a J3 for many years before the Plenue D, great player). That's why I am willing to put up with clunky interface and lack of bells and whistles, Cowon always seems to prioritize sound quality on their players.
Which balance cable do you have. I'm trying to get a 2.5 to 3.5 balance but don't know where to get a good one
For MMCX, I think just some 2.5mm that came with a set of Fiios. Also have a random 2.5mm set for my HD600s I got on Ali, they’re surprisingly nice.
@@SuperReview is it like a 2.5 male to 3.5 female type or specific to the connectors for those headphones? If you still have the product info can you specify a brand or the product. Thanks
This seemed like such a promising player but the UI would frustrate me a lot I imagine, anything similar but more responsive ?
Sony NW-A45 has much better UI. I still go back and forth on these, using the Cowon right now.
@@SuperReview will look into both of them and see which one I might prefer cheers
I love how barebone D2 is, big plus for me!
Which Walkman version are you comparing this to?
Sony NW-A45
Wich is better, this or hiby R3 Pro?
I haven't used the Hiby, sorry.
I heard has a good eq
What is your the most favourite dap, for 400-500 $?)
I have HiBy r6 pro and when I used 4.4mm balanced for playback, the player gets hot after around 10 songs playback.
I was looking for a non Android player that can playback from balance port for my He4xx. Because when I playback with balance on my r6 pro, it sounded punchier without making the sound louder.
Based on my experience, I have 2 questions:
1. Will this dap get hot from balance 2.5mm playback?
2. Do you know if this can compare to r6 pro in terms of sound playback for He4xx or even Sundara? I am looking to upgrade my headphone to sundara, but unsure if it can support playback.
Thanks.
I don't believe the D2 ever got hot for me. I haven't used the Hiby so don't know how it compares.
I just bought the plenue d2 but I'm extremely frustrated. I have a 128gb micro sd I formatted it to fat32 load my music and the play just shows updating database. Then it turns off. It load with the sd card but with the card it just keep doing the same loading database. Any fixes you might know of. And I have tried 2 different ad cards too.
Usually I can resolve issues like this by using the player to format the memory card. I believe the D2 has that option.
Hi, please anyone knows How to play if I do not know the password?
almost all Plenue noise floor is very very well controlled, but once you tried the Plenue you cant get over the sound Signature of Cowon, been using my Plenue D and planning to upgrade tried a few players from AK SR15, iBasso DX220 DX150 and DX120 the sound feel is just different

I am looking at getting a D2, can I ask how the sound compares to my old Sony NWZ ZX1 if you have even heard of that one?
Brilliant sound but after 5-6 years the battery is dying and it’s a sealed unit so time an upgrade I think.
I haven't used that Sony, just my Sony A45. The UI on my Sony is much better than the Cowon, but the Cowon has stronger audio output. Cowon also seems to have slightly more relaxed treble.

Try formatting the card within the Plenue menus.
that small size is look like hiby r3, have u ever heard of it? i think hiby r3's ui looks better than this, but idk which one is better sound quality
Yeah, the R3 looks really nice, and has balanced output as well. UI looks better on the Hiby, but battery life is much worse.
So where i come from we read books from top to bottom which means up = backwards and down = forward perfect sense.
Makes sense. To be honest, since this review I've actually 💯 grown to prefer up = backward, down = forward arrangement. It makes so much sense when you're navigating a song list which is organized that way, like pretty much EVERY song list is.
@@SuperReview i thought it was weird you found it weird that up was back and down was forward.
got a player that's convenient. Didn't do the Sony walkman, watched the video about 6 times. I picked the M3' which is a third less then the price and doesn't have a proprietary port. Sorry, it reminds me too much of Apple's shady exclusive practices and would likely be inconvenient one day. Micro usb will always be around.
You know, I really haven't minded the WM port much.
According to your reviews so far, both fiio m6 and m3k tied with Walkman nwa45 in sound quality. You also mentioned that fiio m6 can power high impedance headphones much better than Sony ( which is really important as some of the best headphones in the market such as Senheisser HD 650 or 800 series or Audeze headphones have high impedance). I currently plan on buying a second hand Astell and Kern AK70 which was an award winning DAP which got replaced by newer models.
What's the battery life on the AK? Their website doesn't say.
How about a second-hand iPhone SE?
I have two big issues with iOS devices as DAPs: (1) I had a real hard time finding a good music-playing app and concluded that the default Music app is the best, but it doesn't support FLAC. (2) Can't expand the storage with Micro SD. If those aren't issues for you, though, not a bad option. I might try an iPod Touch next time they update.
How do you compare the sound of it with Sony NW A45?
Very hard to tell a difference. The Cowon can get louder, and the Cowon has zero amp hiss -- I can detect a bit of hiss on the Sony with sensitive IEMs. The Cowon's treble may roll off a bit sooner than the Sony, but it's hard to say.
With the shure.se547 can hear this ? Is just 32ohm the shure , i would buy one that sony then , the interface much better ,
So your supposed to download mp3 files again? I've been so reliant on Spotify idk where I'd get them. Other then illegally i guess but the the quality is always sub par.
undefined int How about buying flacs?
Personally, I buy CDs and rip them to FLAC format.
i ripped the cds i didn't already have in mp3. Not practical, and the only reason why I stopped using the Plenue D1 once I got a good sounding phone. Other than that, it was a great sounding mp3 player with the best eq system i've ad in an mp3 player, great sound quality, and epic battery life.
send me this Cowon Plenue D2 I always wanted one of you
can u make a review of the AK SP2000 pls...thanks
Bit outside my budget for review items.

Try to review senfer dt6.
It's amazing man. I think you will like it.
Yes, right. The Senfer DT6 is unbelievably good and plays far beyond its price tag.
Yeah man. Best in it's price range.
Using it for 4 months now.
Been tweaking it with equalizer and it response is always superb.
Is this thing waterproof?
Nah.
Plenue is just playing up catch up right now. There had been so many music players released from various brands.
Which ones have this kind of battery life + power output?
I dunno. Maybe none. . Though I would argue that batter and power output are hardware specs do not require the latest in the field. It could be replicated by backwards engineering the device by competing companies. Software on the other hand can be kept secret by the company to prevent copycats.
@@DibIrken It sounds great, has a lot of power and long battery life. Is the software UI that important??
