Dear all Freshman and almost freshman watching this video,
Watch this video every single day, and LISTEN. I'm a senior, and for the longest I was set on a college I don't want to go to anymore. Since I didn't even consider any other colleges, I am now scrambling to figure out what the hell I'm doing with my life! On top of that, I missed the deadlines to colleges I was really interested in.
    DON'T BE LIKE ME

I went to a big highschool, hated it, too many people, made me late for class. I'm going to a smaller college. Easier to concentrate

You have good points, but you forgot THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT. You want to go to a school that offers your desired major. If you're undecided or undeclared, you'll want to make sure they have several majors that interest you. It's also good to know how easy it is to transfer majors, what classes are offered for them, and how long most people take to graduate - It can be hard to get classes at some schools, preventing timely graduation.

Don't make the mistake I did. Start on your scholarships over the summer of your junior year. You'll procrastinate like crazy senior year because of the huge amount of stress that year. You'll need to find colleges, start on application essays, file for financial aid, and all that stuff. There's so much to do that you put off on scholarships. By the time you're done with everything, most good scholarships have their deadlines over with.

    • @Kpower

Well you are about to be a Senior next year, and I will tell you, that the best thing to do during the summer is to start reaching what colleges you want to apply to in your senior year. Also, try to visit colleges you are interested during the summer.

People use the terms interchangeably, but typically a college is a smaller entity focused on one large area of study (e.g. college of fine arts, college of communications,) whereas a university is multiple colleges. Within a college, there are different schools, so within the college of fine arts, there is a school of theatre, a school of dance, etc.

I'm doing a few sorority videos for sure (what to expect, what to wear during rush, etc)! I do just want to say up front that sororities are NOT at all like they are depicted in the movies & tv! I feel like for the most part, they give greek life a bad connotation, and it's unfortunate that it may scare people away because they are really not like that! They're about supporting each other through anything & ah it's just amazing :)

Sororities: Every school does formal recruitment. For the school u attend, check out the Greek Life portion of their website and familiarize urself w each org. Find out when to sign up and if ur gpa is high enough. Go through w an open mind for each irg & don't listen to preconceived notions about any of them or Greek Life. Ask questions and be prepared to talk to several women each day. If you choose to join & it isn't ur top choice, give it a shot. If u decide later on to withdraw do it b4

It seems like the university progress in the US is very different to Australia. In my state, you apply to all universities online before doing the final exams and then you get an ATAR. From there you either get rejected or accepted. It's all based on academic scores. :)

Financial aid is SO confusing! Your best bet is to just visit the office of the college you are planning on attending. Pop in and just explain what you just said. They are usually very helpful in finding the perfect balance of grants, scholarships, and loans you can afford. I hope this helps :) Good luck!

  • @ChristopherEverett

    My name is Chris.
    I am 28 years old.
    I have a GED.
    I live in New York.
I want to attend college after a long internal debate. The debate included where I want to go and what courses I want to take.
The location I want is the west coast (United States), I am looking in or around the San Francisco Bay Area. The courses of interest are business and technology related studies. More directly, relating to computer science.
One of the reason I want the bay area, is because I could try and get intern jobs relating to my field there easier, and perhaps get into working with a company like Google (or in related field) with Co-Op education.
If my understanding of Co-Op education is right I could basically get a job while in school. Which is another major thing I am going to need, is work while in school. I will also need dorm (hopefully), and basically my handheld by the institution because I am pretty poor.
I told you all that to give you an understanding of my situation and so help better answer my next two questions. First, I was wondering if there are folks that help people with the application process? Kinda like a coach or counselor? Second, I am looking for advice. Is the bay area a good place to go? Are there better places.
I have questions regarding GED and other test things. How do they mix and all. But I thought I would ask the folk as that so called school. PLEASE HELP. Thanks.

My advice is that it's very important to know that colleges don't just look at academics when admitting students. Of course they are a main priority, however admissions officers want to see that you are well-rounded and have other dimensions, such as extra-curricular involvement & leadership, to you besides a high GPA.

Biggest tip I can give is to make sure you fill out your FAFSA. You will need your parents' tax information (they can fill it out for you if they don't want to share their income with you.) Even if you don't think you'll get any federal loans or grants, the FAFSA is often used as eligibility for other institutional grants and scholarships, even those that are merit based.

If you can't figure out a major, don't sweat it. Just go into college as an undecided major and take some class that you think might interest you. I'm sure it will help you narrow it down. Plus, remember that you're not locked into a major once you choose one; you can always change it. :)

Actually, 9th grade is the year to start thinking about college. I have some advice that I wish people told me before, and now I've just graduated two weeks ago and I regret not knowing this. IT'S A LOT TO READ, but I think it is good advice you should focus on.
For 9th grade, try focusing on getting high grades so that you can get into honors classes, or maybe even AP classes on your 10th grade year. AP classes gives you College credit so that you can be ahead when you get to college. Also, try to get the most amount of extracurricular as you can possibly get. The next couple of years will be busy and you might not have as much time for extracurriculars as you have at this moment.
For 10th grade, try to defiantly focus on having high grades so that you can 100% get into Honors and or AP classes for the 11th grade year. Also try to apply for scholarships more during this year. Lastly enjoy the 10th grade year. It is going to be the funnest year of your four years of high school and you will need it. Make sure you study for your PSAT's (Predatory Standardized Exam).
For the 11th grade year... IT WILL BE THE MOST DIFFICULT YEAR. I don't want to scare you for 11th grade, but it is super hard. For this year, try to make sure your grades are relatively the same as your grades in 9th and 10th grade. It is a really hard year and you WILL have emotional outbreaks if you go to a hard high school. It is good to be in Advanced level classes because even though they make your already hard 11th grade year harder, it will look good in your high school transcript to colleges. This year is also the year to really study for the SAT's or ACT's (these are test that colleges look at when they consider admitting you to their college) Most good colleges focus on these. Lastly, spend your 11th grade year, and summer btwn 11th and 12th grade visiting and researching colleges you are interested in attending. When researching the colleges you want to go to, try bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-search and cappex.com They are great college search sites.
Lastly, for 12th grade, Make sure you look into all the colleges you want to apply to. Find their application deadlines, Application requirements, their majors etc. Just go deep and research about the colleges. BEFRIEND YOUR COLLEGE COUNSELOR. Even if s/he is not a great person. They can make or break your college application process. Also, SAVE MONEY throughout the school year because living dorm is expensive. So try to save up some money to spend o things you need for the dorm like mattress pads, storage bin, period pads, new clothing etc.
I know this is a lot of information, but it is really helpful. Don't think about so much that you get stressed. I suggest that you copy and paste this reply and try to save it. Trust me, all of this info is important. In general, if you are a good student, you will be fine. Also, even though high school is nothing but preparation for college, live in the moment. Enjoy yourself and make friends. Be open and try to be outside of your comfort zone, it will make your high school years fun. I just wanted to give you some advice. I hope you appreciate this because it literally to be 15 minutes to write this reply.

Start preparing for college your first year of high school. For example, making good grades, etc. Figuring out the schools you want to go to Junior year *especially during the summer of Junior year cuz once you're a senior you may procrastinate* , apply for scholarships too. Senior year, apply for colleges and stuff and hopefully you're straight. I'm a senior now and I'll tell you I'm kinda slacking off and just playing video games (starting to pay way more attention school now). I was thinking about college since I started high school, and still thinking now.
