    The "paying for your friends" statement drives me crazy too because that money goes to events, scholarships, and so many other great things.

    • @posie749
      @posie749 10 лет назад +9

      I agree. It works really well for me at my school because we don't have houses so it doesn't cost me that much for what I'm getting. The sorority I'm in also has a scholarship program to help out and a lot of my sisters benefit from that :)

    I don't live in the US, but I always though sororities there were just for good looking, rich girls. Like if you're not that attractive you won't get in. Is that true? I mean the photos you showed were of pretty, skinny girls and it sounds like it costs quite a bit.

      at most universities, there is a sorority for everyone. the girls are very accepting at most places. At some schools in the south you might come across SOME stereotypes, but for the most part, each sorority tends to be diverse. they all respect each other and treat you as an equal, as a sister.

  • @scatherinelynch
    @scatherinelynch 10 лет назад +11

    So glad you did a video on this. I was a Delta Zeta at my university for four years and it was the greatest thing I've ever done. I'm an only child and always wanted that sisterhood bond. The stigmas and stereotypes that come along with it are so infuriating. Everyone who's not in one assumes they are for spoiled rich girls- not true. About 75% of the girls from my chapter paid their dues themselves on top of their student loans. My JR year I lived in our house and my parents got divorced that same year- there's no way I could have gotten through it had I not been living with 20 sisters. Don't knock it till you try it, because I guarantee it's different than what you would expect. There's so much more history, rituals, and philanthropy that goes into a sorority than anyone could imagine.

    One (of the many) thing that amazes me about colleges in the US is how engaged a student can be in the school. I live in Brazil and here is just like High School, you keep living with your parents, you go to classes one period of the day (some may be the whole day, but not all of them). I wish I got the chance to live with my college friends, to be engaged on school and really LIVE my years of college. One of the upsides of my school is that I can intern all year long. =)

      definitely agree with you! She didn't really touch on the negative things that actually do happen. Like there is truth behind all stereotypes, and sororities can be dangerous. Her constant defense sort of proves that there's fishy stuff going on in sororities.

      Yeah I agree. I know so many people who have quit because it was so much drama and the sisterhood was poor. Kinda like in the movie Sydney White. I saw pictures of this sorority and they all looked like miniature versions of The Housewives of Hollywood. They were all in pink too.

    I heard that sororities can be very dangerous. Like for the initiation they might make you do something dangerous. I once saw this news story on this sorority and fraternity that did initiation together and about 100 people left wounded, the older members were like attacking the newbies. I think someone even died. I was expecting her to talk about this. Don't a lot of sororities participate in like extremely dangerous dares/ activities? Could you please talk about this in your next video. I'm kind of interested in sororities, but i won't join if they are dangerous.

    • @foreverloved20
      @foreverloved20 9 лет назад +32

      Actually there are strict no hazing policies among the sororities. So for the most part that sort of thing does not happen.

    • @isabelchmielewska8707
      @isabelchmielewska8707 9 лет назад +20

      While some chapters may have hazed, I cannot stress enough that I was NEVER hazed. I think that it honestly isn't common for sororities to haze.

    • @jesscain5955
      @jesscain5955 9 лет назад +2

      +Ozalia A. Lots of sororities have a non-hazing policy. Most sororities in my area will give you a number to call if you believe that you are experiencing Hazing. be careful which sorority you join!

    I'm in a sorority. And it's one of the best and worst decisions I've made in college. Being in a sorority allows for networking, and feeling like you belong. Even if you can only connect with one girl in it. It made it easy for me to make new friends, and to break out of my shell. I was a shy girl coming out of high school. I wouldn't say I've overcome my shyness entirely, but I'm getting more brave setting myself out there. It's also a great deal of loyalty. Your sisters are there no matter what. But what I hate about sororities, and speaking from experience, is all the fakeness. No matter what anyone says, no matter what you hear about being in a sorority, one thing is the same. Everyone is most likely fake. Okay, probably not everyone, but a majority. The end game is for you to like them because "you're sisters". But the fakeness can last for so long. It's like being part of the Mean Girls, but with actual future dependant advantages. For example, because I was in a sorority, I got to network, meet some alumni and now have a proper stepping stone to my ultimate career goal. All I can say is that it's an experience. If you end up joining, you will both love it and hate it. It's definitely something different, unlike normal philanthropic social groups. And you'll never truly know what it's about until you're in one.

    I totally agree about people saying that you're "paying for friends" in front of you..so rude. I was in a sorority in college. People would say that to me too! I would tell them that you pay dues because you do a lot activities, get shirts, etc. All of which costs money. You would spend that same money on activities with your friends outside of an organization anyway. You almost save money in a way because our sorority obviously got group discounts when we went on trips and you don't even have to organize these things yourself, which is awesome. Anyway, haha, great video!! :D

I have had many people judge me for being in a sorority, especially when it came to me choosing to go Panhellenic instead of Pan-Hellenic (Divine 9). Yes! I dislike the misinterpretation people have on sororities! It's not just about the parties, it's about the sisterhood, the relationships you create and the experience. You get what you make out of your sorority. I can truthfully say, I'm glad I joined one. 💜

  • @DeeGeeDoll1
    @DeeGeeDoll1 10 лет назад

    Joining my sorority (Delta Gamma) was the best thing that I ever did in college (and I did a TON of stuff!). Going into it, no one in my family was ever greek, and I was told by literally everyone not to do it, and that it was a bad idea. What that taught me is that I was right in following my own heart and intuition. I have so many wonderful memories and lifelong friends now from sorority life. I couldn't imagine not joining. I didn't know what I was doing going into formal recruitment, but I learned as I went, and made so many friends just by doing that. It was tiring but such a blast!! If you are curious or wanting to join a sorority look into your school's greek page on their website, and if you need more help call the Panhellenic office on that campus. :)

    That is one of the things I regret about college. I went to the local community college where I live and it didn't have a sorority and I wasn't dorming there. I regret not going away and being able to be apart of Greek life. I see soo many people I danced with in high school going and joining sororities and they are having the time of their lives! if I could redo college I would!! My advice for anyone going into college or thinking about joining Greek life - DO IT, you don't want it to be a decision you regret making , but you don't also want to think back and be like damn I should have done that (like I do)

    Can you do a video on what goes on in a sorority? Like the things you all do together and how it is living in the house. I feel like that's one thing I don't know much about because no one really talks about it.

    To some of the people asking whether you have to live with them, I know that at my school we can't have sorority houses with more than 4 girls living in that bc by our state more than 4 women living together is a brothel. So we have a sorority house but most of us dont live there but we spend a lot of time there.

    Do you have to party if you join a sorority? I know that there are many events that are mandatory, (not sure what those events are) but for someone like me who doesnt drink or party, if you don't do certain events will you be kicked out? I still really want to join but i don't want to be pressured or forced to do stuff I don't want to do. pls help :-)))

      +Bailey Alvarez It all depends on the sorority, but I think you'd get a feel for the party culture of it during rushing.

      None of the ones on my campus require it. There are options to go but never mandatory. and drinking is never mandatory. We also have girls who go and volunteer to stay sober at parties to watch out for each other and make sure our girls are being safe

    I really want to rush a sorority. My mom and cousin both did it, and they had their own experiences. I am interested in philanthropy and making friends, but also being a part of something. I would love for you to make a recruitment video because I really have NO idea what I'm getting myself into. When does rushing happen? How do I know what to do, how to act, what to wear? I'm not super girly, and I just feel like I didn't grow up in an environment that prepared me to rush, so any help would be appreciated! I go off to school this fall and I would like to not stress about something as joining a sorority! Thanks!

    I joined a sorority at the university of Minnesota last semester and I just did not have an enjoyable experience. I hope that in the fall I can have that sort of bond with sisters that you speak I highly of.

    • @Noisydavis
      @Noisydavis 10 лет назад

      As an advisor, and this is what I have told sisters that I advise who have struggled. Get out there and meet your sisters. Sit next to someone new at meetings, invite a group of sisters to lunch each week, hang out at the house even if you don't live there. It helps and you will find yourself becoming friends with your sisters and clicking. Call your big and go do something and invite others. :)

    I am not in a sorority but I too think it is ignorant and impolite to say "I won't join a sorority because don't pay for friends."
    They're right, sorority girls pay a lot of money to make friends, because they value friendship so much. Everyone spends money on what they think is worth it. Like Caitlin said you pay for classes if you value education; you pay for football game tickets because you love football; why not pay for lifelong friendship? Nothing in this world is free and everything comes with a cost. So does best friends.
    Of course going greek is not the only way and for some people not the best way to make good friends. But hundreds of thousands of college students in America chose to, and no one has the right to judge them just because of their sorority status.

    • @melanieo1924
      @melanieo1924 9 лет назад +1

      +Grace Kim I think a huge misconception is that you're not paying for friends. You're paying to be part of a national organization that promotes leadership, academic and social qualities. You also acquire a ton of life long, real world skills that you can apply to your life after school. Of course you're going to make friends along the way!

    I don't want to sound critical, but this video didn't really give me much insight about a sorority and what its really like. Instead, this comes across as more of a defense for sororities and what kind of criticisms sororities face..

    the sororities at my college (i'm not in one, and I already graduated) made all the incoming girls stand butt naked in a room filled with all the other girls who were already in the sorority and they took a sharpie and circled all the areas on the naked girls bodies that they thought weren't perfect of areas with too much fat.

    I was in a house this past year and I hated it. I actually was so torn down by my sorority experience that I left the school and lost myself. My sorority happened to be one that left a bad imagine of Greek life in my head but I do believe there's houses out there that are good. I have friends who've had great experiences. Something I HATE and believe should be stopped is telling girls during recruitment "trust the system". It's actually a really degrading statement when you think about it, it's pretty much telling a independent human to not trust themselves but to trust some dumb Greek system on where they belong even though the Greek system knows nothing about you but a few short conversations and some stalking on social media. No girl (or boy) should be told not to trust themselves but to put their trust of who they are into a mixing pot of a discriminating system. It's terrible.

    I guess it all depends on the sorority and college. At my school the sororities do not have good reputations for blatant reasons. It's a small college and they are seen at every social & sporting event. They only recruit the same stereotype girls, who dress like they come from money. I'm glad you got a good experience, because unfortunately I did not.

    I really don't think this video was a fair disclaimer about sororities. You didn't touch on any of the negative things you said you would at the beginning of this video. It was more just defending your sorority. I think this video gives people an extremely false view of what greek life is. I believe movies are right on point because if you've ever been to a crazy frat party, you would see what I mean.
