My tips: Do not buy the books day one. Some may not be required, and you may even drop the class. My second semester I bought all 4 books for over $200... never opened them up once. Also, DO NOT BUY FROM YOUR OVERPRICED BOOKSTORE. Rent on Amazon for a fraction of that, if you can't use Amazon, buy used. Bring a few notebooks, not too many, just to take minimal notes. 1st day is about introductions, syllabus, and notes. They'll go around the room and ask you what high school, major, why you're taking this class, etc. For me it wasn't really about syllabus week, but more of syllabus 15 minutes. After that 15 minutes, the class started. Keep your syllabus handy at all times throughout the semester, drop a class if you want before it's too late, talk to people, get phone numbers, know due dates; this isn't high school. First day is scary, but no too bad; mostly anticipation. Best of luck.

Cait, I absolutely love these college advice videos. I am a junior in high school, but i am someone who likes to be extra prepared for anything. I am starting to get ready for the next few years and life overall in college. I watched them all so far, and I can definitely say that your videos will save me a ton of time, space, and money. And most of all stress. I am so glad that I have someone here like you to tell me these things to prevent me from making mistakes. I don't want to get all into it, but i just wanted to tell you that your videos mean a whole lot to me and i love them!

Ugh. So agree with this! When I was a freshman, I forgot so many things. Me and my roommate had to go shopping constantly because we forgot one thing or another! I would still suggest shower caddies to people in suites. The bathroom shower is so small! We put a small table/shelf where we each put out shower caddies and put our schedules in the bathroom so we knew how to be mindful of one another. Hope you enjoyed your first year!

My sister is going to college and one thing I would recommend from shopping with her is getting space bags! They save SO much room for your clothes and other stuff! Highly recommended them! You can get them at bed bath and beyond!

In regards to the printer and mini fridge - check with your school. For printing, my school gave us like 500 free pages each semester, and we were able to rent mini fridges; much cheaper than buying one! Cinder blocks are also really good for lifting your bed for added storage space.
Also, tip, if you want to hang things with thumbtacks instead of command strips but your dorm rules say don't put holes in the wall, do it anyway because you can fill the hole with white toothpaste.

i brought "colour catcher" sheets for when i did my laundry so i could put colours and whites in the same washer and dryer, therefore saving a tonne of money ^_^ never understood why people wasted money doing a wash and then dry for colours, whites and "delicates" :P

    - If the professor puts their PowerPoints online, print them out and take notes on those (this makes things a lot easier in class and while studying)
    - Make flashcards for everything you can!
    - Don't wait until the night before to start studying.
    Hope that helps :)

I would actually suggest NOT getting a futon.I just had my first year of college and my family had bought the futon from Target which was not only kind of expensive but also uncomfortable. And then it seemed like everyone (including myself) were having their futons break. So my roomie and I hit up the local flea market and we found this adorable love seat for only $75! It was so granny-chic and COMFORTABLE! Check out your other resources before you head straight for the futons! :)

I think it all depends on how you are using it. My freshman year, the bathrooms were so small, you had to bring the caddy IN the shower with you. In that case, this wouldn't be a good idea and yes, I had one that was almost a "cleaning caddy" with holes. But for some bathrooms that are larger and you are just using the caddy to get to and from the bathroom, this is a good idea. It's small and compact and cute :) To each his own.

College is so much fun, and as much as I absolutely loved the social life, i'd encourage all freshmen to give lots of thought as to what job exactly u'll be going for afterwards.... wish I had!! Its no fun struggling to find a job when you have a big student loan to pay off!!! If ur not careful, the fun of college comes a a hefty financial price these days, so make sure to get lots of work experience BEFORE u graduate, so u have more chance of a job after u leave!!!

College is the perfect opportunity to meet people and network. I'm from a small town, so without college I'd never meet people in this business. I'll even get to study for a year in New York.
Also, 20% is a really low figure. What people don't realize is that there are thousands of jobs in the fashion/beauty field that most don't even know about. It's not just designers, stylists, and magazine editors. There are a lot of opportunities.

  • @nybaby40

if you go to a college in your own town, a public college here in FL is $130 a credit per semester, considering you have to take 12 credits to be considered full time @ $130, then tuition would be $1,560 a semester, or double that for a college year. If you keep a 3.0 GPA the school alone will give you a scholarship based on need and you also have Bright Futures and Pell Grant, normally those will cover your tuition and books. I say that is still somewhat affordable to most people,

There is nothing wrong with not having a college degree, but you shouldn't be spreading negativity to those who do wish to pursue it. Because there are also a whole lot of jobs where you DO need a degree.
College is also a transition period. Most 18 year old aren't ready to jump into the career field as soon as they graduate high school.

You don't necessarily split the cost. Say she bought the TV, the TV would be equally mine as it is hers if I bought the fridge and the microwave and so on. That's how me and my roommate did it. And then at the end of the year you take what you paid for. I'm not in college, I'm going to an academy 12 hours from home for high school so I have to stay in dorms.

That can happen to anyone, degree or not. The thing people don't realize is that not everyone needs to have a college degree. There's no shame in doing a job that doesn't require one. I know people my age who have no debt, make great money and can afford their own cars and apartments and they have no college degree. There isn't any shame in that.
