Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. Just found this wonderful summary of Scotland's history and its connection to Dunfermline. I was born there in 1938, emigrated with my parents to Canada in 1951 yet after all these decades Dunfermline and Scotland are still "my home". I wish I'd had the time to visit the Abbey back in the day. Was so nice to see a shot of the inside of "our" Carnegie Hall. As a very wee lad I had a lovely voice and sang solo in that very place. As I recall my instructor was a Mr Moody.

I always was in love to Scotland….since my early childhood…reading Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson …even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle….Scotland is MAGIC, MISTERY, MYTH, LEGEND….LOVE, BLOOD, HONOUR, BRAVERY, TREASON, HATE, LOYALTY…..
I visited Scotland several times until 1991…..and I MUST BACK
I'm no christian, but having read a wee bit about St Margaret in Ian Bradley's book on the Fife Pilgrim Way, it surprises me she hasn't trumped St Andrew as our patron Saint. Another great video Bruce, already got my ticket for your Carnegie Hall show, looking forward to it 👍

My great grandfather was born in Dunfermline. Our family lived in the town for at least the last 500 years. I have a very special place in my heart for this place.

Bruce, as always, interesting and educational. Speaking of Carnegie Hall, there's an old joke in the USA about NY's Carnegie Hall, which in the past an entertainer hasn't "made it" until they play Carnegie Hall. NYC tourist asking directions: "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?" Local replies: "Practice!" (drum rimshot).

I remember walking into the knave and my jaw dropped. Unfortunately, the church was closed for winter. The monastry is inspiring. The cellars are incredible. My most important place is Cromarty, where my 3rd great grandmother Christiana Munro left for Australia in 1838. But the most moving place I've been to is Culloden. Also, the Black Watch museum at Perth is special. The mud-splatted kilt of an officer killed in the WWI trenches moved me to tears.
I love the acoustics in the knave. The history is tangible in the knave. I have to sing in there.. some Scots Gaelic and Marillion!
Looking at this and thinking its quite similar to Durham ( which I thought was Norman ). And then I remembered 50 years ago I lived in Fife for a year and never visited anywhere..... what a dork.

My favourite place in Scotland has to be the Isle of Whithorn. Just visited it recently in the May sunshine. Isle of Man and Cumbria both hazy shadows on the distant horizon. Compass clearly carved on the stone in front of the St Ninian Memorial ("lighthouse" if you will), with "N" aligned precisely with magnetic north. Triple rock-cut and pebble backfilled ramparts. trenches dug into the narrow land-neck separating the Isle from mainland (for what purpose one wonders?). What a magical place. Connected with the first Roman Catholic (NOT British) missionary in Britain, St Ninian (or St Finian perhaps???). Could this man have been the Nennius, who penned Historia Brittonum? So many questions. Such a beautiful place.
The first stop on my 2022 Scottish road trip was Dumfernline Abby. Like you said in your video, it was like a pilgrimage for me after 35 years of reading everything about Robert Bruce that I could get my hands on!
Got to visit the Abbey on our last day of our visit last year. Was purely humbled to be standing in the Abbey. So grateful we capped off our trip there. Amazing place.
Going to touch down in Scotland on June 23rd and you are no small part in cementing my plans to come! Thank you for your wonderful storytelling and for sharing your love of your homeland

@@louisep428 taking a drive around the whole country! Starting in Edinburgh, up through Inverness, all the way to Orkney, then down the western coast to Skye, and finally back to Edinburgh. I'm a huge fan of Neolithic history, hence the trip to Orkney (so many have asked why 😂) I can't wait! It's been a dream of mine since I was 15

@@harbingersociety3286 Orkney is INCREDIBLE. Ring of Brodgar, Maes Howe and the wonder that is Skara Brae, quite apart from St Magnus Cathedral and the Churchill Barriers. You will LOVE the place.
Lewis & Harris are wonderful, too. But the beauty of the North West Highlands and the coast ....

Love Dunfermline.Was able to go inside and tour the Abbey in 2021 during the pandemic when it was closed to tours. They let us in as I had traveled from the USA to travel to see my family Ancestral sites..#1 on my list was Dunfermline. I'm a Bruce (my maiden name) and a Stewart ( Descended from King Robert) plus other Noble lines. Was so amazing to visit several places in Scotland. ❤ genealogy is a passion of mine and my relatives.
I’ll be there this coming week, wish you were my tour guide. Going to Scotland 🏴 with my best friend she is from there. Scotland holds such a special place in my heart.

All of the Christian churches and religious sites were formerly used by an older religion broadly termed Pagan.
I'd say that Scottish history has been shortened and blurred away as a result.
I absolutely loved visiting there. My great grandmother was born in Lanarkshire, right between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Scotland felt as familiar as home to me.😊❤
Thank you for introducing me to Dunfermline. You make a strong case that it is the most sacred place in Scotland (in both the religious and secular sense of that word).
Love your videos Bruce, My favorite Castle is of course where my ancestral clan originated lol. Castle Sween in Knapdale is believed to be the oldest standing Castle on the mainland and in the 1100s the Macsweeney clan were the Lord's of Knapdale.

Having been born and raised in Dunfermline, I can appreciate its history. From the ancient King's and Queens, Saints, and the great Andrew Carnegie. There is so much more to Dunfermline than many Scots know. Its history of Damask manufacturing, the donations to the city by its most famous son, the birthplace of some great Scottish bands. Although I have moved away, my heart still belongs in "The Auld Grey Toun" and the haunts of my Youth.

@@snowwhiteburt I used to know a Robert Burt, from school, and its a pretty well known name in Dunfermline, there was a Burt's shop in the town, but I cannot for the life of me remember what it sold, it was either a chemist, or a sort of DIY/household store. If I remember, hard to do now, but I think it was either in Chalmers Street, or maybe the New Row.
Love buildings like this where there is just layer upon layer of history all piled on top of one another
I got Married at Dunfermline City Chambers, just a stones trow away from the Abbey.
I visited Edinburgh and Grey Friars churchyard to pay my respects to Greyfriars Bobby, a loyal wee dog. I went into Greyfriars Kirk and was literally tackled by this lovely old lady who proceeded to give me a personal tour of “her” beloved Kirk and the foundation of Presbyterian form of Christianity. Love the videos and I long to return.
Wanting to visit more and more as I watch these. So. Many. Stories. Was in Linlithgow 20 years ago and stayed at Belsyde House; most amazing breakfasts, and Mrs. Nan Hay was delightful.
I recognised where you were straight away I lived in Dunfermline in "1990" and drank at a pub nearby the Abbey called Gatsbys, (we danced at (Lorenzos) lovely place and people. Myself and a friend went to fife on a whim and visit her mum and stayed a while, about 7 months.

A lot of threads brought together nicely Bruce.
My favourite location is Stirling Castle. Apart from all the events that happened in and around the Castle it still means I'm home when it first comes into view on motorway from the south.
The other place is Ardoch Roman camp at Braco, I went to primary school in Braco. Any involvement in Scottish history is long forgotten

Sitting in the Dunfermline Abbey grounds is a pure joy , se peaceful and quiet.
I hope to visit Scotland someday. It's on my bucket list. I'm not sure where my family would have come from but that leaves it open for me to explore all of it.😁

I was born in New Zealand, but schooled in the country of my origin by my Grandmother, I learned to love a land I would not see until I was sixty-five. You grew up there and are far more Scot than I will ever be, know more of my people's past, more of that land than I will ever know. Choose then for me my friend. The land of my forebears is forever the hame of my heart. Yet I am a vassal of the Ngati Toa, a tribe of great mana, the people that gave me the land of my birth...then who am I?
Love Dunfermline. I visit every time I'm over. My 6th G Grandfather John McLay b 1732 d 1828 (yes really; started in the coal mines worked at Abbott House later) is buried in-between the buttresses. Nearly all my M'Lay; McLay; McLean ancestors lived in Dunfermline and later Lochgelly (my father was born in Lochgelly.)
Northumbria was also under Scotland at this time all the way down to York it appears.
Fascinating, Bruce, like all your videos. I always learn something from them. However, it's in my nature to be picky, and you've fallen into the east/west trap: Kinghorn is to the EAST of Dunfermline, not the west.
I'm not sure how I've missed visiting Dunfermline Abbey; I've been to Cambuskenneth, and I played in the Carnegie Hall a couple of times.,

Good Day Bruce, As usual you present history as I believe it should, creating what was to us kids at the time (Many years ago a boring subject,) into an interesting topic to be investigated and encouraging further study, Unfortunately as I remember, our history lessons as a a school boy sixty years ago, were a white wash of anything to do with Scotland in favour of a mainly Brittish ( English) content. I hope the history lessons in schools today today are given in a fashion similar tp yours. I just wish I was in Scotland for your talk in Carnegie Hall, Well Done. Cheers

I went to high school in Dunfermline. I learnt more about the important history of this place from YOU HERE, than we were taught at school!! That is shocking, disgraceful!
We were taught about Stonehenge and American cowboys and indians and the invasion and colonisation of North America instead of learning our own local history and how it relates to British history and today.

Funny you should mention Iona, Bruce. During your Australian travels, did you happen to notice the phenomenal number of places eg. houses/Medical centres/Properties etc. with that name?
If I had a dollar, for every place called Iona. I'd be extremely wealthy? Well, probably not. But I'd certainly have enough for a bloody good meal.
It's obvious to me, the name must be of great significance to yous Scots.
I'm in Fife and will be going to the show in Perth which, strangely, is actually closer to me than Dunfermline (Perth = 30 miles, Dunfermline = 40 miles). Very much looking forward to it!

If you're in Fife, there's loads of quirky wee places to visit and an abundance of castles/towers and even caves.
It's not just by chance that the first official visit King Charles 3 and Queen Camilla made after becoming King and Queen was to Dunfermline to convey city status on the town. They also visited the Abbey. Even today it holds a special place for the British monarchy.

My family are the Burts are buried next to the Bruces, Sir Thomas de Burt went into Scotland from England and the families were very close. Dunfermline Abbey is near and dear to my ❤

My favourite place was Carnoustie because the love of my life lived there, in an old gatehouse, I was just there 1 month ago for her posthumous Album launch, as she died in 2021 a few days after her 57th birthday, I’m an Aussie so we used to travel through Sth East Asia together as it was sort of halfway, unfortunately when I went to Scotland before her Dad was unwell and needing some support, so we only to take our old LDV campervan out for one night just past Loch Lomond and we found this beautiful spot to camp for the night with a little pebble beach and a natural spring which we could drink from because it was being filtered through all the rock and gravel layers up and down the hill, we had hoped to stay for a few nights, but her Sister needed help with her Dad, so it was cut short, her Dad only just died last year, and he was an well known Dundee Poet speaking in old dundonian so I am pretty good on the Scottish slang. The launch was brilliant loads of amazing Dundee musicians all younger apart from her musical partner and pianist, they all talked about how she mentored them and got them gigs on a club night she ran, there was so much love in the venue that it brought me to tears, and having not had a chance to see her grave or be there because we were in lockdown and our borders closed, it was my first chance to see her Daughter and her Sister and connect with them again and very deeply. She was an amazing Woman, we found each other at 50 and only had a short time together, but it was a lifetime together all the same, definitely soulmates I had never felt a love like that before, even though I have loved some amazing women and am still friend’s with a lot of them, it’s definitely a whole different experience when it’s like you have known each other forever on the first meeting, and I knew she was the one straight away. Anyway I love history and next time I go back it will be for longer so that I can spend some time with her Sister. There is a painting of her by a well known Scottish artist which has followed me home in a very prominent place of a high end fashion store that had its launch party on the day I got home, which blew me away when her Sister told me, I’m off to see it next week. Thanks for the History, I love history and the way you present it, I lived in London for 2yrs and near Brighton for a year, but it was Scotland that I felt more at home in.
