As someone born just outside Doncaster, I have to say I've always felt closer to the Scots and their way of going about things than I ever have to Westminster. As for the current infestation of vermin masquerading as our government, the sooner they're consigned to the history books, the better.
@@ScotlandHistoryTours But Alex Thomson, half Scottish and half English has commented. Grab an earful of "James Delingpole and Alex Thomson" on the Lawless Britain Archive on YT. Westminster is not England, London may as well be its own nation, it essentially is in many ways including having its own seperate internal government along with the UK wide one. Most of England doesn't identify with London or Westminster, take London away from England and it's essentially just like a southern Scotland.

Great video, very thought provoking. I'm Cumbrian and we lost our lands and Brythonic language to the English so what does that make me 1000 years later? My dna is 60% English, 35% Scottish, 5% Norse, so what does that make me? All in all it gives me a greater sense of being a Briton
To be honest, Cumbria was one of the very last places to lose its Brythonic language. Only Cornwall was later I believe, and they have now resurrected it somewhat, but it was dead so pronunciation etc may be way off. And of course in Wales it still exists, just about... But don't forget, at one point, before the Anglo Saxon invasion, the whole island would have been speaking dialects of Brythonic. It's only Wales, Cornwall and Cumbria that get any recognition for ever having spoken it, it seems. Which is quite bizarre.
As a proud English man, I’m really chuffed that Scotland is still part of Britain. If I was Scottish I’d hate us too , but I am English and love my country but love yours just as much 😍😍👊🏻
Surely Scotland will always be part of Britain. Hold on, do you know about an earthquake, tsunami apocalypse and you're keeping it to yourself till COVID's done?
Actually if you look at history properly Scotland is largely of viking decent not celtic. This is proven by DNA testing. The vikings were hardly a peace loving people. The problems between Scotland and England were mainly to do with viking settlers and leaders fighting over territory. Scotland and England were as bad as each other in that time. No Kingdom could claim a monopoly on what is right. Old Scottish propaganda says Scotland is fighting for what is right. Many Scots still believe it. Its still propaganda.
Growing up I used to say I hated the English but thinking on it I realised it was a knee jerk reaction much the same as saying I love drinking whisky and love haggis… things I’m supposed to say if I’m Scottish. What a lot of Scots hate is a small section of the English who still believe they have an empire and Scotland is still a part of it. Back in the 80’s we used to say the line was south of the Watford Gap, that’s the dodgy English you had to watch and those North of that line had more in common with Scotland than their English compatriots ( based on purely the anecdotal evidence of a few good nights out in northern English towns for a wee drink over the years ) 😊
'' wealth generating land'' that is what defines the wealth and power of a country and not millions of square miles of tundra in russia or desert in Saudi. Bruce is a gifted , and brilliant historian . Well done again .. no time for small minded nationalists.
Which small minded Nationalists are you referring to ?????? Also, having control of an Independent Nations finances & policy making is surely the correct path to pursue when the British Nationalists in Government at Westminster are legislating ordinary folks rights & freedoms away under the smokescreen of Covid…….. Fascism just around the corner ? Oh & don’t forget the NHS !…..Sunak’s in California at the mo in talks with private health care big wigs !!!!! Anyway as an Internationalist I agree with the comments made regarding borders but just for the record Independence differs from Nationalism……..Nuff Sed
As someone else had already stated, wanting independence has nothing to do with being a small minded nationalists. Remember Scotland voted to stay in the EU, unlike England. How do you square that with your small minded nationalist comment?

When I was living in Northern Ireland my dad's sister (born in Edinburgh like my dad) referred to me as English, so I tried to correct her by informing her I was from Yorkshire. She then went on to correct me, by informing me that "Yorkshiremen are just Scots with the generosity bred out of them." 🤣 That was nearly 30 years ago now, but I'll never forget it. Don't diss the old folks, they're sharper than you think...
Honestly, I can't stand that "Yorkshire not England" crap. It's such an affectation and Yorkshire was part of one of the biggest events in English history, namely the Wars of the Roses. Who do "Yorkshire not English" types think they're kidding?
@@gammonsandwich1756 Us 'Yorkshire not English' types are alluding to the War of the Roses when we say such things. Those Lancastrian types stole our Crown and they STILL won't let us bury OUR King in Yorkshire. We''ve been trying to get away from them ever since, we even put up a barrier of hills between us but they still come over. I liked Mr Fummey's plan to reposition the Scottish border between the river Dee and the river Humber, but the only drawback is we'd be taking the Lancastrians with us (and nobody wants that). Don't take it too seriously though, twenty or thirty years time I'll be nothing but a memory on Earth. Arguments about nationality start to pale into insignificance when you think about it.
There seems to be a lot of animosity to southerners, I don't feel any particular way to northerners. The discourse and hatred often always feels one sided. It's a shame really.
As someone from Doncaster, I knew this was about us but I always love seeing Doncaster so had to watch. And I'd love that we was never officially given back to England but I'm sure some legislation overruled it.
Your forgetting Bruce, that One man in London has the ear of HM QE2, Since the Balance is all South of the border, it's neither here nor there what Scotland's government say or vote for. The old saying still holds true Who holds the gold, Holds the power. Or until the Balance that has been London heavy IE the monarchy, which has for over 300 years. can be brought into balance then can Scotland make the decision. Anything which England sees as being a threat to the State of the Union despite that when Charles takes over It will be for just 1 hour. Then the 4 nations of the union and the Commonwealth can bend over stick their heads between their legs and kiss it all goodbye. You may think Bruce that it's just the power of the democratic process, however reality is £ ¢ € ¥ $ what controls. If you think your taxation goes directly to government "nooooo" It goes direct to treasury which is a collection of private banks which loan that money to government in order to run the country day to day. that tax you pay goes into a bank account which may be Bank of Scotland or whatever. It is an account "managed" by government but not of government. Nice little scam by the private bankers mate.
Im so GLAD AS WELL AS GREATFUL! That you created this MASTERPIECE Channel. Streaming it to my television instead of watching "traditional"programing. A NOBEL CREATION, FRIEND. 👏🏻👍🏻
Personal comment of Laura Botten: This is why I love your channel! You look at my favourite things of history; the little details that made the world what it is; the individual people who lived and were who they were because of the time in which they lived. DNA doesn't matter to me half as much as the relationships and experiences of the people and what they passed on. Elizabeth was thought to be my 3x great grandmother, but when a cousin shared the family Bible with us, we found that Mary Magill was the mother of the children. She passed when Grandpa Wes was small and his wife and family only knew Elizabeth. Elizabeth was still his mom, Grandma Effie's mother-in-law, grandmother to the children as they grew in Regina, etc. Happy to know of Mary Magill, but Grandma Elizabeth is no less important to the story.

14:36 international viewers aside, slightly troubling that Wales is (as ever) erased, to be part of England. Of course, Wales was part of the pre-Union Kingdom of England, but I would expect a bit more accuracy from a historian of these Isles.

As a Yorkshireman now resident in Galloway??? I love your videos. Since moving to Scotland 6 years ago, I now consider myself more Scots than English (agus tha Gàidhlig beag agam). I always thought Yorkshire had more in common with Scotland
That’s because we are closer to the Scottish border than to London. Berwick-upon-Tweed really should be judged as two towns because essentially one is on one side of the de facto border and the other is on the other side of the river in England. If it’s any consolation until a few decades ago the town of Tadcaster in North Yorkshire was half in the west riding and half in the north and east Ridings. Because like many towns on a river with an accessible Ford. It’s spread onto both banks. So I get the predicament.
I think most northern English folks would say they have more in common with Scots and the south of English folks lol great video mate love yer channel 🙏🏻🏴

I live in and born in this town. We're not Scottish. Economy and culture are different, we have a bigger economy than Scotland yet get less funding from Westminster, we don't work hard and don't blame Westminster for it like Scotland do. Scotland is rarely mentioned if at all here. Scotland had a referendum and said no to independence. That is democracy. It is not democracy to keep having another go until you get the result you want then it stops.
@@ScotlandHistoryTours 😂😂😂 No it's not my friend. You don't get to keep replaying general elections because you don't like the result, you accept the result. Otherwise you wouldn't have a democracy. Same with referendums. Accept the result, like everyone agreed to.
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Brilliant reply. Democracy doesn't work unless those who lose accept the result. Also Investment on hold, infrastructure plans on hold or built elsewhere as nobody knows if Scotland will be in the UK or not since they want a referendum every 10 years. And unlike Ireland that has young population with high birth rates; Scotland has the oldest population and low birth rates and land not ideal for agricultural products. We share an island, history and culture. Sounds like to me we should work as being a single country, not constantly cause division.
Aye, most of the Scottish MPs are SNP though. It's not the political party that I support, but it's why your comment made me laugh. Whatever way you cut it there's a democracy problem. That was my point

My Mum was Scottish, my Dad was English. I live in Scotland. When I drive North across the border (usually near Carlisle) I feel uplifted mainly because the traffic diminishes to nearly nothing! It is said they conquered England in a day they did not but English resistance is airbrushed out of history they had to battle their way into Wales and it took a long time were invited into Ireland and married their way into Scotland.

The vast majority in Yorkshire see Yorkshire as a country in its own right, bordered on 3 sides by England. When asked where I am from, I always answer : Yorkshire.
Love your work, wish I’d known you were in town. Funny thing with people in Doncaster (or DonCARSter if you’re Jeremy Clarkson) is we all know about being part of Scotland, but less than 1% can tell you why (including me, til this video). A lot of people said we should have a vote and quite a few hoped we’d actually go with Scotland if they voted yes. In our defence, we’re more coherent than Barnsley 😂

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos. As someone from "the other side of the Atlantic" I do enjoy learning about the history of Scotland.
That thing about going back to Scotland and your heart just lifting is so true though everytime a scotsman comes home he's filled with joy
You’re a fantastic presenter full of charisma. An instant sub, I’m so glad I watched this video! Looking forward to learning more from you in future!

Great history, learning so much more on a subject I thought I was well up on - brilliant and thanks
Full on brilliant vlog episode! Well handled set up to lead the discussion if history into genetics and then into the choice of identity and THEN into restricted freedoms... All handled with aplomb.

Really interesting discussion on so many levels.
Love it thanks
Awesome! Thank you!
Enlightening Bruce! I spent 2 years in Doncaster in the 70s when stationed at RAF Finningley, I always felt so at home there and loved the town - now I know why, it was home from home! 😀👍
There ye go
Surely a 'Hame from Hame'
I love for your picture of England, Wales was still stuck to it. Even folk on our own island struggle with the differences
As someone born just outside Doncaster, I have to say I've always felt closer to the Scots and their way of going about things than I ever have to Westminster. As for the current infestation of vermin masquerading as our government, the sooner they're consigned to the history books, the better.
You may say that. I couldn't possibly comment😁
@id buy that
Isn't it this disposition that enables them though?
@@ScotlandHistoryTours But Alex Thomson, half Scottish and half English has commented. Grab an earful of "James Delingpole and Alex Thomson" on the Lawless Britain Archive on YT. Thomson sums up the Oxbridge alleged "elite" perfectly. I have met so many stupid people who went to those universities. The best are great, but the others - the majority - are a millstone round the UK's neck.
Amen to that mate
Westminster is not England, London may as well be its own nation, it essentially is in many ways including having its own seperate internal government along with the UK wide one.
Most of England doesn't identify with London or Westminster, take London away from England and it's essentially just like a southern Scotland.
I watched a geordie and a scot have a conversation on a train and they seemed to understand every word eachother said with out a problem,

This is a really great video, I would have loved to have watched this in a history class when I was at school. Definitely will be subscribing

Great video, very thought provoking. I'm Cumbrian and we lost our lands and Brythonic language to the English so what does that make me 1000 years later? My dna is 60% English, 35% Scottish, 5% Norse, so what does that make me? All in all it gives me a greater sense of being a Briton
Be what you want to be my friend
To be honest, Cumbria was one of the very last places to lose its Brythonic language. Only Cornwall was later I believe, and they have now resurrected it somewhat, but it was dead so pronunciation etc may be way off. And of course in Wales it still exists, just about... But don't forget, at one point, before the Anglo Saxon invasion, the whole island would have been speaking dialects of Brythonic. It's only Wales, Cornwall and Cumbria that get any recognition for ever having spoken it, it seems. Which is quite bizarre.
it makes you British.
If your a nationalist it makes you English because anyone not currently living in Scotland can have a say .....

You can still love Scotland when it is independent x
As long as we split off at Berwick during the earthquake I'll be happy lol
Back in the 80’s we used to say the line was south of the Watford Gap, that’s the dodgy English you had to watch and those North of that line had more in common with Scotland than their English compatriots ( based on purely the anecdotal evidence of a few good nights out in northern English towns for a wee drink over the years )
😊
Aye up mi duck :) , as a born and bred Doncastrian, growing up i have heard this story many times, thanks for filling in some of the gaps
You're welcome
'' wealth generating land'' that is what defines the wealth and power of a country and not millions of square miles of tundra in russia or desert in Saudi. Bruce is a gifted , and brilliant historian . Well done again .. no time for small minded nationalists.
In medieval times land was wealth. I think it was Adam Smith that realised commerce and people's ingenuity could be more important
@@garyboyle695 but more people in Scotland voted to remain in the UK than the EU….
@@matt-inthehighlands7385 Yes…..very true !…..it had always been my opinion that keeping the Union with devolved Parlys was the best way forward in the corrupt World of Politricks…..until we were able to ‘Revolutionise’ Politics on an International scale….take away the power of the Corporations & multi Nationals & install fair trade under the ethics of Socialist principles !……..lol 🤣 Aye….ye’d think !
But when you look at the way the UK is now run…A Government corrupt to the core… responsible for thousands of avoidable deaths due to mishandling covid…..filling their pockets 💷💶💴💰with their connections to big pharma!…. new repressive Police powers etc etc ….all helped out by New Labour !….this is an abusive relationship that has reached a turning point & now is the time for divorce proceedings. After all ,Independence is for self determination fiscal control & decision making for our benefit & not relying on pocket money from our Westminster neighbours!
So I take your point but the landscape has changed so much that an Independence vote now will give us in Scotland the ‘get out’ we sorely need……apologies to the good folks south of the ‘imaginary’ border….but now is our time to lead by example !
Bang on Bruce as always mate, and I hope you had a great Christmas.

Don't diss the old folks, they're sharper than you think...
well said😉
Haha! good gag.

I know mate. First, please don't confuse me with an historian. I'm not. I'm the guy down the pub who drones on about stuff. More importantly, of course I know about Wales. As a Yorkshireman now resident in Galloway??? I love your videos. Since moving to Scotland 6 years ago, I now consider myself more Scots than English (agus tha Gàidhlig beag agam). I always thought Yorkshire had more in common with Scotland
Aye ...indeed it does ...and they know how to make a decent brew!
Yep definitely

I live in and born in this town. We're not Scottish. Economy and culture are different, we have a bigger economy than Scotland yet get less funding from Westminster, we don't work hard and don't blame Westminster for it like Scotland do. Scotland is rarely mentioned if at all here. Scotland had a referendum and said no to independence. That is democracy. It is not democracy to keep having another go until you get the result you want then it stops.
🤣I think you'll find that ’s exactly what democracy is my friend. Be healthy
@@ScotlandHistoryTours 😂😂😂 No it's not my friend. You don't get to keep replaying general elections because you don't like the result, you accept the result. Otherwise you wouldn't have a democracy. Same with referendums. Accept the result, like everyone agreed to.
Deary deary me Marky Mark
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Brilliant reply. Democracy doesn't work unless those who lose accept the result. Also Investment on hold, infrastructure plans on hold or built elsewhere as nobody knows if Scotland will be in the UK or not since they want a referendum every 10 years. And unlike Ireland that has young population with high birth rates; Scotland has the oldest population and low birth rates and land not ideal for agricultural products. We share an island, history and culture. Sounds like to me we should work as being a single country, not constantly cause division.

It isn't just one man in London that said "No" though, it's the British government. Quite a few British MPs just happen to be Scottish.
Aye, most of the Scottish MPs are SNP though. It's not the political party that I support, but it's why your comment made me laugh. Whatever way you cut it there's a democracy problem. That was my point

Very interesting, I didn't realise the Normans had such an impact on Scotland as well.
My surname is Norman, the de Wer's were granted lands in Roxburgh, just to balance things up, my mum's side is Dane or Viking
The Normans were ON FIRE from about 1000 to 1400. Check out the poor Norman Knights the de Hauteville's who became Kings in Sicily. King Roger of Sicily had a globe of the world before Columbus was born.
It is said they conquered England in a day they did not but English resistance is airbrushed out of history they had to battle their way into Wales and it took a long time were invited into Ireland and married their way into Scotland.
Our son visited Europe on a tour with the rock and roll band he plays with. They ended up in Glasgow, and he said he really enjoyed his time there. The band is The Boxmasters.
