Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

Bruce your cruden bay show was great magic to meet you and the woman was shocked in a good way with the tinder chat 🤣
Bruce, why do you never come to perform this side of the rather modern border?
Religion and history go hand in hand..
Because they are both fake.
All CLAIMS in all your VIDEOS are Required... STORIES will not be Acceptable & SOLID PROVABLE FACTS.
😜
When I'm in charge Bruce, St Andrew's day will be a puclic holiday of celebration, and it will be considered bad form to have Christmas displays or decorations until this date has passed.
Move it to June or July ☀️
I think that is a fabulous idea! When was the most important day in the life of St. Andrew?
I'm with you
Xmas can happen after st Andrew's day
Not before
I agree Az 😂😂
Sorry but im going to rule as king....just as my grandfather's did 😂
My name is Andrej i'm from Macedonia and we celebrate St Andrej's on the 13th of December
Bingo! Thanks for that
“The raid was only to borrow stuff”
The way I burst out laughing
😜
Fun fact, the clouds that formed the cross were jet contrails from St Andrew's fighter jet that helped take out the Northumbirans.
Well that's no more unlikely than any Religious Nutter's maniacal ravings! 😜🙄😁
😂
Works for me!
UFOs!
I thought that straight away. Were there such things as linear clouds before the age of powered flight?
I really enjoy story time with Bruce as a start to my Saturday 😅
Happy Saturday all 😊
Happy Saturday to you...
Hello Bruce, my two favourite things are history and storytelling. You are the embodiment of both. Thank You so much.🥰
Wow, thank you
That was a really nice thing to write...E..
Nice video! The fifteenth century Valois dukes of Burgundy also adopted Saint Andrew as their patron saint and used a red, saw-toothed saltire as a banner, but it seems to be unclear why they choose Andrew and his saltire. One theory is that Duke John the Fearless choose them to honour his Scottish soldiers led by the Earl of Mar and the Earl of Douglas.
Wow love listen to history by Bruce he makes it more interesting,if he had been my history teacher I probably would be teaching Scottish history, thanks for reminding me history is fun and interesting Bruce 😊🙏
🏴Thank you for another great, educational video 🏴
Glad you enjoyed it
Great wee book to compliment this is (for me anyway) The Celtic Way of Evangelism by George G Hunter. Great reminder of how important the migration of Church, faith, learning and more came from the north and west rather than Canterbury. Just a wee setting the record out and straightening of history like Bruce does.
Aye Great Job with our Christian faith!
St Andrews day is my wife’s birthday and my sister in law’s birthday. Always plenty of reason for a few beers. Hope you are well.👍🏴🍻
🇯🇲
Very interesting indeed. To be honest, I am more of a Burns' Night person myself. I am extremely proud that we have a larger celebration for a poet than a saint.
True
I agree👍
Poet's are saints... but don't admit it 🍻
AND...St Andrew built a truly legendary golf course.
I love your stories I cannot wait to go visit Scotland I will be there someday thank you for the wonderful stories 🏴
Please do!
I have a very deep compassionate love for Scotland for some reason it keeps popping up into my life aye very unusual so I love the stories keep them rolling❣️❣️🏴🏴
Thank you for telling our story that pays some tribute to “history”, remembers our failures but stays true to the good things that make Scots Scots
Hello Bruce, I enjoyed your story...as usual! Being a Presbyterian I am quite familiar with the St. Andrew's flag and knew about its ties to Scotland. However I have learned alot about its origins in Scottish history today! I really do not understand how historians can ignore so much really interesing history. Thankyou! Keep up the good work. 🇺🇲🏴
Many thanks
Years ago, I read an English language summary of a study by a Greek scholar showing how the travels of St. Andrew were possible. Very interesting how Andrew could have traveled to Scotland, Russia, India and China on established trade routes. Not necessarily proof of visiting but proof that it was possible and stories of his visits might not all be fables.
Aye you'd need an explorer pass on the ferry
With the right travel advisor it’s not that difficult.
Yes. I read this too. It is plausible. Andreas was north of the Black Sea and evangelized and he may came up north to the Baltic Sea. He should have entered a trading ship and landed on scottish shores for a short time. My name is Andreas, the greek original name of the scottish saint. I have a strong inner connection to the flag.
Brilliant again Bruce. From an Englishman with Scottish roots, I just love the education I get from you
Here to please😘
My Scottish heritage is so remote that I don't even pretend to have a connection, But you are such a great story teller that I can't help but be interested in Scottish history. Now, my wife's maiden name is McClung and my daughters often bring this up and I find myself referring to the things I've learned here to talk about parts of their ancestry that are much more interesting than their mutt father's side.
Brilliant
As a Scot our wedding anniversary is Nov 30th that way I am sure to remember it and so far it's worked for 49 years
Scottish Saltire, Union Jack, and the Rebel Flag all connected back to Scotland with that cross?! My American mind is blown! 😮😮😮
how about the bonnie flag
Never knew that about the confederate flag myself, amazing ehhh? .. yet nowadays it's seen as a racist flag.
@@PYDPIPER research the bonnie flag .. it was before the stars & bars
@@Paulftate : You learn something new every day, no matter what age you are ... lots of things make sense now ... Bonnie Scotland - Lone Star State ... thanks 👋
@@PYDPIPER never gave the "lone star" motto any thought .... that is relating to Scotland .. thanks for the insight ✌
"That's the kind of generosity Scots are known for." I spat out my drink so I didn't choke with laughter!
Aye. Been brainwashed a hae nae doubt.
What's the difference between a Scot and a coconut? You can get a drink from a coconut. 😂.
fuck me , we do nothing but give
Another fascinating video Bruce.
As a Dumfriesshire man with many family links in Ayrshire, my preference is Burns night as well. Always been aware of St. Andrews day on 30th November, but never really celebrated it in any way. Never fail to celebrate Burns night on 25th January though and always have my haggis neeps and tatties 😁👍
Fascinating history indeed. Just a minor point: The Confederate flag you show is the battle flag of Virginia, not the first flag of the Confederacy. Nor is it the "stars and bars" flag. They did have a Bonnie Blue flag though in 1861. As always, thanks for an entertaining start to a Saturday morning.
Thank you sir, was about to say the same but you had it covered.
I know. I read up on the different incarnations of the Confederate flags, but in videos that are supposed to be compressed into 10-15 minutes I'm never going to please everyone
@@ScotlandHistoryTours Please don't think I am displeased, I love your content - just wanted you to know. A lot of people here make the same mistake - (many of them Southerners).
@@ScotlandHistoryTours That flag is bad news. Period.
Thanks for another excellent story. You personify the ongoing molding of Scotland’s character by carrying on and blending the traditions of the bard and the griot.
Thank you again Bruce. You told me a few things I did not know. Its strange how folk think they know a story but it's just not the truth but the truth they were told.
I have some very dear friends who are not Scottish at all (they’re Hazara Afghan, in fact) but loved the idea of the Highland Games I worked at as a reenactor. They never got a chance to go and have since moved very far away (New Zealand of all places), but this past Saint Andrew’s Day, they sent me a picture of their two little girls holding a Saltire they’d drawn in class; the girls had insisted on sending it to me because they remembered that my family was from Scotland. I nearly burst into tears right there in the gym, it was so sweet. 😭❤️
Interesting tale, as always well told. The sky blue of the saltire prescribed is Pantone 300.
Also, while maybe relegated, the Celtic saints weren’t forgotten. It’s said the Monymusk Reliquary residing at the national museum was carried into battle at Bannockburn.
Hi Bruce, from Australia. I knew a bit of Column. I knew a bit less about Andrew but I did know enough to realise that St Columba was sure to get a mention in the tale. Thanks for filling in some details; I love to hear your stories.
I’m a Burns Night man.
As a brit i must say hand on heart ,that the BEST holiday i have ever had was ....in john o groats North scotland .The house i stayed in was called " the captains house " and my next door neighbour was ......king charles !!!!!...no , i'm not joking , he has a castle called the castle of mey .
To watch the sun set into the sea (try saying that after 4 beers 😁) was absolutely breath taking .
Thankyou SCOTLAND for being so bloody beautiful.
Peace out ✌
My great grandfather, JJ Badenoch, helped found the Illinois St. Andrew's Society for the purpose of providing care and housing for the aged Scots people of Chicago. Several years ago, the then-president of the society contacted me and in our conversation he told me that JJ had attended 50 consecutive St. Andrew's Day Dinners. The St. Andrew's home for the aged is still functioning and the Illinois St. Andrew's Society still has an annual banquet.
Much love from Chicago. St. Andrew is my personal patron saint too. Love your show and am I a new subscriber!
My Father of Scottish Ancester's and my older brother and his father before him where all named James and ariived during the Viking Age of Norse Scandinavian Folk !
When as a young lad l asked him how come I was named Andrew.....his response was because they ran out of Scottish Name's.
I remember being told when a wee girl that the Saltire came about after a white cross was held up to the blue sky (probably by St Andrew).
😂”don’t talk to me about spare parts”…”and a tooth away with ya” 😂 7:30
😜
I've seen the flag in the sky a couple of times.
Happy Saint Andrew's Day from Missouri. Thank you, Bruce, for another great show.
Love Burns night of fine words and fine food 💙🏴
Now there’s a thought: let’s be nice to each other for a change and spread the wealth around under the Scottish flag. Another interesting, riveting story 🌞
And just like that, I learned something about my ancestors! Thank you!
Our pleasure!
I only recently learned that my great grandmother's actual last name was MacGregor. Her family were Magees for 200 yrs.@@ScotlandHistoryTours
I want to know more about that tower (or I presume that’s what it was - the ochre coloured square but odd roofed building you were in near the end).
A doocot
I was surprised to find James Buchanan in my lineage.
Terrific history! Great stuff! Keep it up.
I love the way you tell your history is so passionate and entertaining as well and that amazing that saltire is oldest flag that very cool. I love learning more about Scottish culture and history from you . I love history of British isles such rich amazing history . And that very much includes Scottish history too .
Hiya Bruce! I'se a Burns Nicht fella. Thank ye kindly for all of the stories. May ye hae a bonnie New Year!
Love your channel Bruce. Your videos always make me swell with Scottish pride
I hope so
I wish you did a Podcast, I would listen to your voice all day! I love some Scottish History
What's the difference?
@@ScotlandHistoryTours I can listen to a Podcast easily while I am working. Or while I am commuting.
Excellent! Phenomenal! Concise simplicity! I love this video as it has bridged a significant gap ion my family's religious/military history. Thank you!!
Brilliant as always mate, wish my history teacher was as good a storyteller as you I might actually know some stuff! Ach well better late than never eh 👍✌️mar sin leibh an drasta 🏴
😜
Great show I never fail to finish one of your videos without learning something more about Scottish history. I often watch and rewatch. The third times a charm
Brilliant
❤❤❤ love that "blue sky" above Scotland 😂😂😂
Excellent recounting of the story.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fascinating, as always. Doyes the term"navy blue" come from the darkening of the blue in the flag?
Maybe Janet but I have always thought it was something to do with the Royal Navy.
@@pjmoseley243 Yes, but I understood that the darkening was to avoid the fading of RN flags round the world.
Love your enthusiasm and sense of humour. Great storytelling.
Cheers
I was born in Athelstanford and I’ve never heard of St Andrew’s night. I was however baptised in the church here in your video. Thanks for the video.
No way you've never heard of St Andrew's Day
@@ScotlandHistoryTours , definitely heard of St Andrew’s day, but not St Andrew’s night.
@@richardlove4287Me too: Burns’ Night, but St Andrew’s Day. And I’ve never heard of haggis being associated with St Andrew’s Day as implied by image at start of video.
@@lindaj5492 , I thought I was going a bit daft there not knowing about the celebrations on St Andrew’s night! lol. But I’m glad I’m not the only one that found the beginning of the video a bit strange.
I've listened to numerous of your videos and have always found them fascinating and very informative. Keep up the excellent work.
Awesome, simply awesome.
Glad you enjoyed it
Stories bind us together in so many ways. My assumption is that very few people today believe that St Andrew himself intervened in a battle in the 9th Century, but that idea has resonated for over a millennium. Although I will be drinking whisky at any gathering, Burns night is obviously a better celebration. But, if ye wish her gratefu’ prayer, Gie her a Haggis!
St. Patrick's Day is big in America. I've heard of St. David's Day, because I once worked for a Welsh store. But I had never heard of St. Andrew's Day until I listened to you. I feel I've been missing something!
Keep listening so as not to miss any more 😜
Oh, joy ! A cloud formation !
Thank you, Bruce.
You are very welcome
Poor ol' Columba - got about even when dead. So St. Andrew - usurper. Romanii ete domum. I'd prefer the local lad.
Happy Wendsday Bruce 🎉
It's funny as i've never known anyone to make much of a fuss about St Andrews day, but I am from Galloway so perhaps that has something to do with it. Certainly agree with you, Burns night is the proper event. I'd love St Andrews day to be more a day to celebrate great Scots generally, but aye. Great video as always!
you are a great breath of air Bruce. my fellow Perthian or whatever a Perth person is called. i was born at 18 Glendevon road and you said you were from round the corner? i lived in craigie knowes for a few years too then Aberdeen. still love Perth and follow the saints.

You have such a way with the words Bruce, I swear that you must have a wee bit of Ireland in your DNA , a really interesting tale and so well presented, well done.

i live near a small well dedicated to "the Lady" there is a hill next to it is known on some maps as pisgah ,id often wondered when it was renamed or named
I just found your channel and watched the one about New Zealand. Did you know Robbie Burn's nephew was on of the founders of Dunedin? And another famous area is the McKenzie country named after a Scottish sheep stealer. One of the small towns has a statue to his dog because the locals were so angry that Mckenzie's fathful sheepdog was shot by the local constabulary to get back at Mckenzie.
Depending on which of the New Zealand videos you watched, I covered the Rev Burns
LMAO - My BITHDAY is Nov 30.... St Andrew's Day... as well as the birthday of Winston Churchill, and Lt-Col John MacRae (who wrote "In Flanders Fields")
Happy birthday when it comes
You missed that St Andrew is also the patron Saint of Rwanda. Our grandchildren are half Scottish and half Rwandan so a double celebration.
Bruce, ye NEED to bring your show to the tartan day parade next year in NYC. Loads of members of the Scots societies here would love it! There may be a "coffee" in it for ye :-)
Aye but that would require a US work visa and the hassle isn't worth it
Interesting --- like most of your vlogs. Well Done
Many thanks!
What an excellent episode. Thank you.
Seconded...
Thank you
You do such a great service to history. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge in such a great manner.
Thanks for watching!
thanks for that , great wee video , did somebody forget to tell The Black Douglas he was only supposed to " Borrow " things ? 😂👍

My birthday is Burns Night❤❤❤❤❤❤
I am the only Poe scholar (first a college fan, then as an Independent Scholar, then as a biographer) who has investigated and written of Edgar Allan Poe's Scottish Connections [2013, Foster City, Cal.]. Hervey Allan (1928) is the first to have written information into a chapter, but never cited his sources. So my investigation had to show my readers the cultural milieu of where and in which Poe inherited his intellectual and literary perspectives. In doing that, I document every footnote and source of information. Nevertheless, the PSA and the MLA expressly discount my work. My surveys of Ayrshire did not include a discussion of the Scottish flag, the Saltire, and its origins, but I did include notes on your heraldry, especially as it relates to Glencoe, in his, "The Valley of Unrest." I did not think it relative at the time. However, after watching your presentation (26 November, 3 days before the American celebration of "Saint Andrew's night,"), I realize there are some relevant and vital points that relate to Poe's psyche. You are an unpretentious authority on Scotland whose knowledge reaches me in the most fluid way, through video. I am dyslexic, and truly hate reading. So grateful for your knowledge, research, and programs. Sgt. Brill, USAF (Ret), Thailand [P.S., I have been reluctant to write of my findings on the Scottish African Slave trade in which Burns, Galt, and Poe connectionsappreciate
