- Join me on a beautiful 48 degree, sunny morning here in Southern Illinois at Kapper Outdoors as I take out my new 2013 Ford F250 Powerstroke Diesel Super Duty for its first towing mission! After struggling mightily with the 2001 Chevy 3500 dually dump truck that I actually purchased to do my heavy towing with, I finally had to accept that it simply was not up to the task of towing 13,000 to 14,000 pounds, in this hilly country any more. So I ended up trading in my 2016 Ford F150 3.5 Ecoboost for this 2013 Ford F250 Super Duty with the 6.7 powerstroke diesel. I have been waiting awhile now to finally have some serious RAW TOWING POWER and stability towing my equipment trailer and our tractor and/or Bobcat excavator. Join me for some cab views, some beautiful country views with the sunroof open and lets test out how the Ford F250 does towing. We'll also test out the downhill speed maintain function in the tow/haul mode, which worked quite well! Thanks for watching, please hit the Like button and subscribe and hit the Bell icon for notifications to follow all of our land management projects, the new Ford F250 powerstroke testing and towing videos, excavator projects, food plots, duck ponds, watering holes, our Kentucky farmhouse rehab projects, hunting land improvements, rustic furniture and much more country living adventure. Kapper Outdoors, living the dream, one acre at a time.
Sorry to hear about your friend. One of the many reasons I love this channel, is because of your attitude about life. That mirror-image view at around 3:03 is awesome! I'm happy that you're happy with your new truck! It will serve you well.
Thanks buddy I do appreciate it because we really tried to keep things real, and try to stay positive even while documenting the downfalls in life :-)
I have a 2012 f350 swd and it tows like a beast. I use the tow haul / engine brake and works wonderfully. Great video 📹 👍 👏 🚚 🛻 🚛
Right on! I love that truck!!
Dam bruh sorry about your friend.... Great advice
Welcome to the world of Diesel towing my friend
Awesome!
Beautiful truck! My buddy has one like that and man it’s fun to drive!
Thanks bud, yeah it rocks!
Ford tough. Nice trailer
When you have something new like your ford it gives you that feel good feeling especially when it tows as it does brilliant Gk Uk 🇬🇧
Thanks GK. Yeah this is the truck I should have had all along!
Mr. Capra sorry to hear that just just seen your episode once again I'm very sorry to hear that your friend passed away he was still too young my best wishes my regards my prayers and thoughts go out to you and his family
Thank you I appreciate it and I know it's family does. Take care
The diesels are awesome! It tows the trailer like it isn't even there! I keep my brake controller setting at 7, it seems to be ideal for towing my trailer/tractor with my F450. Disturbed is one of my favorite bands! Sorry to hear about your good friend.
Thank you and agreed on all of that :-) yes it was too short for Wayne, God Bless
Have to love the Super Duty. I have my self a 2015 F350 6.7 and it never skips a beat. Pull just about 10k every two weeks or when I need to and it does phenomenal. Plus the interiors are above all else.
Yes sir I totally agree with everything! So far this thing is badass to the Bone
I send you my condolences and prayers for Wayans family
Thank you I appreciate it and I'm sure his family does as well. Life is short we have to enjoy some of it.
Excellent video. I watched this a few times before picking up my 2016 F350 6.7 just towed a light trailer today with it that my f150 would have felt for sure. I’m loving the 6.7!
I've got a 2011. Tows like a beast.
You can actually go in the settings and select trailer brake efforts. Which applies the trailer brakes quicker to your gain setting
Yes I'll have to dig around in there a little bit more I know how to adjust the gain setting but wonder if there's another setting that can be changed
Sure is nice to see the ford getting it done for you .
The beast seems to be running just fine 👍 . Dang that's a fine machine😎 👍. Full-watch, Kap. Take it easy and I'll see you on the next video.
Thanks buddy appreciate it you take care, Semper Fi
I’ve never drove a better towing truck than a ford
Never drove a better pulling heavy duty truck than Ram/Cummins , half tons my Ford 3.5 ecoboost 10 speed is the best pulling half I’ve every pulled with.
John DiMartino I like the Cummins just not the truck around it.
Rodger that that's why I went with the Ford my Chevy 3500 just was way underpowered. But I'm really digging the new diesel :-)
Kapper Outdoors it’s a nice truck 👍🏽 great video 🇺🇸
It sure is nice to have the right tool for the job👊
Hoorah! I'll second that!
Looks like a good towing setup
Sorry to hear about Wayne have a great day be safe.
Thank you much appreciated. Take care
Glad you enjoy the Ford. 😃
Your a great man... More power to you... Your truck is really nice & well taken care of... Beautiful country side views. I drove an F250 for work.. I mostly hauled 250 gallon tote tanks full of water.. 4 of them & other equipment (commercial pressure washers etc) never had an issue. Really good trucks.
Thank you, and yep, I wish I'd have got this truck years ago! It's a power horse for sure!
@@kapperoutdoors what's the weight capacity on that trailer?
Beautiful Truck ! Looks like your Tow Problems are over!!
Yepper!
Sorry for your friend and his family Brother 🙏 Be blessed and continue to be inspiring 🙏
Thank you I appreciate it and I'm sure they do as well. Just too short for him.
Great truck man!!!
Thank you!
The camera and the claw on the roof. Great Halloween prank even if unintended. The ride looked good except for the camera fall over. Happy hauling. 😀👋
LOL just having fun to see who noticed :-)
@@kapperoutdoors I noticed. Thanks for the laugh. 😂
Sorry to hear about your friend. My friend was killed in a RZR accident last week. He was 31 with a young family including a baby girl about a month old. It can happen so fast. I'm 51 and he wasn't the first one lost. He won't be the last. Prayers to your friend's family and friends.
Thank you, and yes bad stuff can happen fast and we often take each day for granted. Take care, thanks.
Good deal man. Sounds like a beast
For years I have had a Ram 3500 Cummings, after 3 million Miles on the same engine without one breakdown, I will never drive anything not powered by a cummings. I am so happy to see Ford will get them, Ford trucks are a smoother ride, Ram is very ruff, but they don't brake, though my back and but could use a rest, LOL.
Yeah no doubt Cummins is a beast. Both of my tractors have Cummins engines and they Rock. Thanks
That hill decent is for off-road use mainly does the brake management for you so you only have to worry about navigate the terrain. Also while going down the hills in tow haul, if you apply the brakes the truck will downshift and the transmission will hold a speed like sort of like an engine brake. Great purchase as the f150 needed a break lol, love the content.
Thank you I appreciate it and yes I am really enjoying the engine braking in tow haul mode
Nice vid Kapp. That ford is a horse
Roger that! Thank you I appreciate it
I'm a GM guy but that truck is definitely sweet!
Yes sir I agree. I've had a lot of GM and Chevy trucks over the years but this one is awesome. Of course it cost an arm and a leg and the firstborn, but it is nice :-)
Yeah, one heck of a nice truck, but.ready for you to get the equipment back over to Kentucky in working condition.
Yes sir no doubt so far 2.0 is holding up well in Kentucky
I think everyone is the same once you have a really good piece of equipment you say ‘why didn’t I have this years ago ‘’,well it’s because you couldn’t afford it then !!! , every piece of equipment I have ever bought I wish i had it years ago , for me it is probably the bobcat S130 and an Audi A6 are the best .gk Uk 🇬🇧
Sorry about your Friend Joe.
Thanks Brett I appreciate it
A very nice video...so sorry about your friend, my deepest condolences...you're so right, I try to live my life as if every day could be my last, so I try not to hurt people's feelings, tell them I love them, more and be positive/uplifting not negative. Cancer sucks, hubby, sister and a couple of aunts and uncles died from it. Stay strong, stay safe, take care and God willing and the creek don't rise...I'll catch your next video.
Thank you dear I appreciate it and I know his family does. Take in a bunch of fresh air on each new morning!
When I was given a cancer diagnosis at 65 I learned that life has no guarantees, live in today and don't sweat the small stuff. At 71 I've been cancer free for 3 1/2 years. The hard part of aging is losing friends and family to death.
Yes I agree, God bless you, and glad to hear you've had such a great run! Here is too many more sunrises for you!
Lynne Perg God bless you and very happy to hear you are cancer free! It runs in my family my grandpa is 72 and had prostate cancer,my great grandpa died from prostate cancer didn’t know it’ll he had it and it was all over his body from what I was told. I believe there is a cure for cancer,to much money in treatment.
Keep a extra egt probe, code reader and 13 mm spanner on hand. My 6.7 eats one or two yearly, always during a regen. Shuts the truck down for one hour when it happens.
Okay man I know the basics about mechanics from the old days but you're going to have to explain them to me with a little more detail LOL
14k toy hauler on 10% grade at 70° F for several miles, going to 6500 feet elevation. As long as your not a jack wagon... no problem. LaPort road on the grade in Plumas Country CA...no big what your doing in Kentucky. I tow in the high Sierras of CA...Ford kills it. Single rear wheel F350 176” wheel base...stock.
The gain needs to only be set at like 4.0/4.5 if that for the trailer brakes with that trailer and load. 9.0 is applying almost all of the braking power the trailer has. The reason for the skidding noise is the trailer brakes are locking up.
He said that🤦♂️
Yes I understand, but that trailer has not been breaking properly with my other two trucks I've had the brakes adjusted and checked so that's why I started High. I'm learning that truck and trailer combination as I tow. Thanks
I have a 2014 F250 but it only came with a 12k max hitch using a weight distributing system. Did you replace your hitch with a heavier rated one? Is that a 14K trailer? I had a 7k trailer but want to get at least a 10k or maybe a 14K. Trying to figure it all out.
This truck has the 'super' heavy duty tow package. I don't recall the exact name of it, but it is the 'max' tow package, above the standard 'tow' package. I've been contemplating the distribution system.
Only bad thing I see about your truck is the color of interior, I had a Chevy same color once does show dirt. I see the closer you got home the scenery changed so no one know where you live, don't blame you!
Diesels pull like a freight train 🙂
No doubt!
Hey bud are you sure that’s a 10k set up? Looks like 12-14k set up
Well, long story, but yeah it was a '14k' equipment trailer but when you subtract the weight of the trailer, it really knocks down the 'legal' weight you can haul..
@@kapperoutdoors so in other words the back hoe is 10k?
So did they ever figure out the electrical issue? You mentioned it but never said if they found anything. The new Superduty looks great.
The wife gets the new suv this time and I get a new truck in a few yrs. Can't wait.
LOL good luck in a few years when you get a truck. I believe the electrical issue is resolved but can't be one hundred percent. He tightened up the wiring behind the radio and tightened up the radio mounting bracket and so far everything has been just fine.
I knew you would enjoy that diesel. Now you need to buy more toys to haul around 😂
Haha, trying to stop buying toys LOL
can you see the ball when backing up to the trailer with the backup camera?
Yes
I loved your video thank you for the content. I do have a question about your truck I read in your description you were towing 14 to 16,000 pounds. It’s just my opinion but you got the wrong truck that F250 isn’t what you needed , F250 isn’t meant for heavy pulling, as it doesn’t have the payload to carry the pin or tongue weight of a trailer over 10-12000. It’s really a DOT Cheater truck.... the diesel version doesn’t even have more payload than modern half ton. Those early first generation 6.7’s are known for their crankshafts breaking , injector failures ,and turbo failures. I would have at least got a 2015, with the crank upgrades turbo and fuel system upgrades and more power.
Wow man I'm not sure where you got the info but that is a super duty and it's actually made for heavy towing. And the 6.7 powerstrokes have an amazing reputation for reliability. Thanks
I recognized the song instantly lol
I am guessing the only thing you will have to replace is the sun roof motor as many times as you opened and closed it in just this video
Perhaps, but I really don't use it that often. But I guess we'll see :-)
I didn't think it would take very long for you to throw the other one under the bus. 8-)
Lol yep
When you were towing were you in tow haul mode or just normal?
Yes I was in tow haul mode but it took me awhile to figure out the engine braking downhill you just have to break a little to engage it.
Sweet truck man. I figure you went with the 250 instead of the 350 srw truck to keep your trailer+truck GVW below 26,001 lbs? Does the 250 have the 350 springs in the back? I noticed it took the weight really well without really squatting.
You bet, you called it right on the money. 26000 even or less :-) yes the super duty has a great tow package.
You got air bags or is she stock?
Not sure to be honest. I would think it's got air bags.
Does it have a factory exhaust brake? Mine does and it makes a world of difference. You barely have to touch the pedal.
Yes it does I didn't figure that out until after a few Hills it is awesome. Thanks
Sorry about your friend. If I were you I would see about getting chains and binders
Thank you. I do have some chains and binders now, not sure if I had them back then or not. Thanks
One thing that chevy doesn’t have that the ford does is trailer sway control.
Yeah I know my Chevy was a 2001, but it was a full ton truck and it did not handle heavier loads too well
Condolences to u and ur friends Wayne's family, that does look like a real nice driving experience 🤔👍💪💪
Thank you, you just hate seeing it when people are just getting to a decent point in life to enjoy things
Would weight distribution better if you backed tractor on??
Not really it's kind of a horse a piece a little heavier on the tongue or a little heavier on the tail. But it is well within Towing specs for tongue weight. Thanks
Nice truck Kapp like it .and it pull good .
Dónde se cogen ese tipo de cargas gracias
Was that Vienna?
Yep
Kapper Outdoors -Cool, it's neat seeing places close to home on RUclips!
I used to own a Ford, it now identifies as a Chevy 👀
You mean Ford doesn't even offer an engine ( Jake) brake? For going downhill braking..that's pitiful if they don't. You should have looked at Ram they are standard on diesels..
An exhaust brake on the Super Duty 6.7 started with model year 2017 (available in late fall 2016). Kapper's truck is a 2013 - so it does not have an exhaust brake. None of the pickup truck engine brakes are "Jake brakes." They are exhaust brakes using the turbo to provide back pressure in the intake manifold by closing the turbo vanes. This provides static pressure against the flow of exhaust gasses on the exhaust side of the turbo. A real Jacobs Engine Brake alters the operation of the engine's exhaust valves - and usually allows the driver to provide incremental engine braking (low, medium, high) by engaging either two, four, or six cylinders of the engine.
Buckhorn Cortez yes I know, I have been a truck driver 25 years.
Well call it whatever you want, it does have engine braking downhill once you hit the brake to your desired speed it will then use the engine braking to maintain it. My guess is it was built of that way. Because it says it in the manual.
Southern Outdoors You mean you don’t understand the difference between a Jake Brake and an exhaust brake? They are standard on all the current Big 3 diesels, by the way- not just Ram.
So Joe how was your tailbone with the ride with the tractor on the trailer compared to the dump truck?
Way, way better. That Chevy got beat up pretty bad compared to this Ford. Nice
I don't know if you noticed but when you loaded it the truck never even squatted
Yeah, great suspension for sure Mike!
Dont compare a "chevy" to a 6.7
you are talking about a 6.0 gas
I only compare them because that is what I have and what I've been using. The Chevy couldn't handle the load which is why I had to get the power stroke. Thanks
