    I think in the real world the 6.2 is a great motor. Fleets don’t care about overall power.
    My work has 6 of them, and they are absolutely the best motors we’ve ever run.
    The two oldest ones have 11,000 and 13,000 engine hours of heavy towing and they just keep going. Defining out lasting the body lol.

    Other than lack of power I have never heard anyone complain about reliability on the 6.2. I've personally seen many hitting 350k miles and a handful hitting low 400k miles on the original motor. I have heard of a few going further but I have not seen that in person (yet) however I believe it's very possible. I'd go as far as saying it's one of the most reliable motors fords made in the last 20-30 years next to the old inline 6 300.

      @@IT_GRUNT I said "next to" the 300. You could say it's more reliable and for arguments sake, sure say the 300 is. But I'd say the 6.2 is a very close second.

    I'm also a pushrod v8 guy, and when Ford finally released the new 7.3l gasser pushrod I was super stoked, probably be the only engine option I'll ever take, I love diesels too but just too damn expensive to maintain and repair, when a single injector costs over a 100bucks it ain't worth it to me, and mind you those Ford diesels have 8 of them, that's over 1000bucks just for injectors, now granted the 7.3l gasser has 8plugs 8 coils and 8 injectors so a full tuneup could very well cost more if done all at once I'm sure, but it's still a way easier engine to work on for any normal backyard mechanic and everything is very simple to get to and reach, a hundred year old technology that is tried tested and always true to this day, American pushrod v8s can't be beat, the issues you showed about the cam lobe wear looks like something seized up and probably wasn't getting oiled, or someone ran that thing super hot somehow, although I didn't actually see any blued metal I did see some discoloration on the lobe perhaps a fluke out of spec part creating to tight of clearances causing oil deprivation or something, but again I'm more than confident if I owned a 7.3l gasser that I could do all the repairs myself aside from the stupid computer side of things, worst thing that ever happened to any pickup truck was computers and sensors, can't just leave well enough alone can they, I own a 1976 f150 4x4 4spd, got the 360ci fe truck only engine, still runs like a dream and is built truly Ford tough, mine proof transmission, indestructible axles, solid 1/4in maybe slightly thicker frame, real steel body, can fix anything in it and on it within minutes and standard simple tool kit, oh how I miss the days when a roadside breakdown only took 15mins to solve and fix lol...computers and sensors does allow for more efficiency of course, but all those extras creates many more possible areas for issues, DEF is also the most horrendously obsurd and disastrous thing to any diesel engine I've ever seen in my 40yrs of living, I understand the concept, but you're literally adding more chemicals to counter act chemicals, so I question wherever this DEF is concocted how much emissions do those plants put off when making the crap??? Bet they put off more than a diesel truck does!!?? Wonder if they put some of their own DEF into their exhaust stacks at the factories it's created at lmao???

    Only person I’ve seen say the 6.2 is unreliable and trash. Not powerhouse but they will run all day with no problems. More reliable than the new 7.3 and 6.7 in my opinion. 6.7 really needs to drop the CP4 and it will be nearly bulletproof but I still prefer the gas engines for longevity, low repair cost and maintenance. 6.7 does pull like a dream but it’s easily $5k+ when something breaks on it. I'd love to hear more from 6.8l V8 owners. I'd like to get a pretty basic extended cab, long box 4x4 with FX4 and upfitters and top marker/beakon/bed light, and dual battery. Probably drivers assist features for insurance. I live in iowa, but end up, or will e d up as far south as Texarkana a couple times a year, and though it may seem like overkill, I may end up pulling g a car on a trailer as far as central Iowa to central Arkansas once or twice a year. Possibly load down a trailer with engines to build. Nothing a properly set up half ton hasn't done, right? But for the money, the better choice is 3/4 ton. I may only buy one more vehicle in my life, if I can get the money together to start this business doing engines for classic cars and customs that want a bit more power. Also do Jeep stuff and dink with I6 gas engines and turbos more now. But this build I want seems fine to me. Plenty of power to run a handful of project engines to the shop for machining or hauling a southern car up north for a project. Gotta keep the American cars and trucks alive. It will also get my paraplegic butt back in the shop, doing what I love and off ssi, or at least mostly. I'm only 44. I want to figure out how to build the 6 and 10 R 100/140 transmissions to put into old restomods. My last F250 was a 75 HiBoy with a transplanted and warmed up 428 CJ in it. Had to pull the np203 in favor of the np205. I miss that truck, but I gotta be practical about my workhorses. Ty all, sorry I ramble.

    Ford 6.2 with 227k and over 13000 total engine hours. Outlasted all the 6.0 Chevy 2500 in the fleet by a long shot. It's pretty gutless but not any worse than the 6.0 Chevys.

  • @lovernchristopher
    @lovernchristopher 7 месяцев назад +54

    We have a fleet of 6.2 super dutys. They replaced the 5.4's and all the chevys. The Chevy s suffered many transmission issues and fuel pump failures. As fleet owner's, cost of operating and maintenance, the chevys are awful. During a typical 250k lifespan the chevys usually end up with two major trans repairs or overhaul and at minimum two fuel pump failures. We operate under a municipal utilities providing electric, nat gas, sewer and water. They count every penny of maintenance and operating cost. The super duties usually retire at 250k with original trans and fuel systems. Front trans bearing failures have happened with the super duties but thats a cheap fix that takes less than 5 hours to repair. Those that have the failed bearing runs nonstop for 8 - 12 hours daily. We have in my dept 15 2011 and up super duty gas and two 6.7 diesels. The 2014 6.7 f450 crew cab dump gives us the most trouble. To much to list. But , we didn't have many troubles with the 5.4 either. Our maintenance division only uses 15w40 for everything that they service, even the few generators get it. Each of our divisions have somewhere around 10 -15 6.2's.i think its somewhere around 50 total including the administrations. I hate to say it but i believe this video isn't completely accurate. I still enjoy watching the videos. I wish I could send the cost analysis for all our vehicles. Its very revealing and awful troubling for the Chevy guys. No Rams , sorry

      @lovernchristopher 7 месяцев назад +10

      @MrFPSWisconsin 6.2 isn't available anymore. We've already started the transition to the new 6.8. The cost has also dramatically increased on the crew chassis . Not sure , but I'm expecting our city admin to accept bids again and that would mix things up again. I'll try to screenshot the analysis with my phone. That's really protected info , not sure why. I do remember that the 6.0 had issues with the flywheel cracks, and the usual things like fuel pumps and unusual trans issues. But that's at a fleet level. One or two trucks it wouldn't matter so much. Personally I can manage a trans change, fuel pump etc. fleet owners add up every penny and decide on those details. So consider this. A 3500 crew with a mini excavator and air compressed on a trailer with 4 crew members miles away from the maintenance facility has a fuel pump failure. A tow truck, a temporary replacement truck , and all the planning and prep that went into the job that is delayed or canceled all adds up to what could be thousands of dollars. Also happens to the ford's, no truck is perfect. As for me , I was in the market for a used utility truck a few years ago and was considering all the brands . I ran across a 2500 6.0 but it was heavily abused but low miles 160k around $8500. About to pull trigger and found a 250 6.2 for $12500 much better condition with 175k from a family friend that was retiring and it needed a few maintenance items such as body bushings, evap temp sensor, tires and brakes. Now have 247k. Stumbles at idle occasionally but never shuts off. Pulls heavy loads most of the time . Also 3rd gear can't decide if it wants to contribute to the heavy weight sometimes but I can expect that now. The condition is so good I believe I'm going to have the trans overhauled and maybe a timing chain just incase.

    • @lovernchristopher
      @lovernchristopher 7 месяцев назад +4

      @samuelhatch8470 I definitely agree. I once drove a dodge 2500 & the exhaust brake was amazing! I couldn't believe the difference. 2022 pulling around 10k , I also liked the lower RPM power of the Cummins. Personally I think the inline is better for heavy towing. I'll tell you a secret, the older f750 runs the Cummins engines LOL , but don't tell anyone.

      @lovernchristopher i work as a fedex delivery driver for a contractor; one of our mechanics has said the same thing about the reliability of ford compared to chevy. We have a pretty varied fleet,ranging Nissans, GMs, fords, and one freightliner chassis. We cant seem to kill the freightliner, despite being an 07 with over 800k, but the GMs have pretty bad reliability. The fords give us the least problems, and the nissans ain't great but aint smack you in the face terrible. No 6.2s in our fleet, as if i remember correctly, ford never offered it in the stripped chassiss or the van cutaways that our trucks are based on.

They both have the 6.2 and 300,000 miles combined haven’t had any issues with engine or transmission. The only major problem I’ve had with my SuperDutys are the cab mounts. But a great local mechanic fixed them with S&B silicone bushings for $1,200 (each truck).
    I personally love my 6.2s.

      Yes! So happy those mounts exist. I have a fleet of 13 gas V8 F250s all generations. Whats nuts is the 2 2004s and the 2001 still have stock mounts, I just did the S&B mounts on a 2010 and the 2012 is next. They just crumble. Great trucks otherwise, and the gas V8s are very economical to keep on the road.

    I’m a fleet mechanic and we run a lot of super duty trucks. 6.2’s are doggy and it sucks when they get a misfire because honestly, you’re better off replacing all of the coils, plugs and wires. You can replace one coil here and there but you’ll be working on it a lot. They do seem to stay together and not leak though. The 6.6 Chevy will eat it alive in a drag race though and I consider myself a ford guy.

    I have an 2021 f350 with the 6.2 paired with the 10r140 10 speed. Just had the transmission replaced under warranty with 54k miles on it. I personally think it makes driving really boring cause it’s rare that you ever get to feel the power, because it always keeps the rpm’s low. But for towing I love it. Going up hills with the old 6 speed the engine would scream going up a hill with plenty of power, but then it would up shift and you’ld start slowing down. With the 10 speed you dont have that, it just drives as if your not even towing anything there are so many gears it can choose. I just hope that they fix the issues with them. Cause I really do like it.

The maintenance is much more expensive and the fuel cost is more being a diesel. The 6.2 pulls out equipment just fine. If the 6.7 makes it to 100k without any major repairs, I’ll be surprised. The 6.2 has almost 250k and has never been into.

    • @pdegnan4852
      @pdegnan4852 8 месяцев назад +5

      So you actually can get the 7.3L (Godzilla) with a 6-speed TorqShift, but sadly that "package" only exists (from the factory that is) in the E-Series Cutaway Van chassis and the Class 6/7 F-Series Medium Duty stuff. It's also derated to around 320-330HP, but still the same torque numbers. You see that package used a lot in shuttle buses, and things like panel trucks and step vans.
      I've always wondered if anybody has tried swapping that current 6-speed into an F250/350/450/550 that would usually be mated to the 10R140 if they had to write off their current 10R140 out-of-warranty.
      Also, I own a 2022 F250 Regular Cab with the 7.3L. The 7.3L appealed to me because it was a "return to basics" of sorts : Overhead valve and port fuel injection (versus GM's L8T with direction injection). I actually picked the F-250 over the F-150 because of all the oil consumption issues with the 5.0L Coyote, and because Ford finally had to bow to the EPA and start using cylinder deactivation on the 5.0L. This is all the type of stuff that usually leads to premature engine failure, which I obviously wanted to avoid. So yea, I didn't need a 3/4 Ton pickup, but I bought one because you can still get "more basic" powertrain package in the 3/4 Tons (at least for now anyways).
      I also agree with you that : The 10R140 is a finnicky transmission. I spec'd my truck with 4.30 gears, and I've found that : If you don't let that truck warm up for at least 5 minutes after it's sat for a few hours, the transmission shifts like it's broken (i.e. super hard shifts out of 1st gear, sporadic rough downshifts if you're both slowing down and turning at the same time... just weird stuff). After 2 years of ownership I've "figured out" to make the transmission "behave itself", but that also doesn't seem like something you should have to do lol.
      I also picked the 7.3L because : While I could afford the extra 10k for the 6.7L PowerStroke, I didn't want the additional ownership costs of a modern diesel (the fuel filters, the DEF, exhaust regen regimen, the inevitable failure of the fuel injectors, and the list goes on). It's also well known that those 6.7L's do not like to sit off for extended period of time, and in my situation my truck will sit for days sometimes until I have a need to use it.
      The 7.3L strikes a balance between having an acceptable amount of power for most tasks (I do not tow 20,000 pounds on a regular basis), and still getting that lower total cost of ownership of a gasoline engine over a diesel. I realize if I ever get rid of this 250 that I'll get less money for than a diesel, but I doubt it'll be enough of a hit to justify the $9,500.00+ option SKU that the 6.7L PowerStroke demanded on the 2022 build sheet, plus all the other maintenance that comes with owning a modern diesel.

    This is exactly what I needed! Now, tell me why I should just keep towing my camper with my 2016 F150 3.5L ecoboost that has 170K. Tell me I can't afford it. Tell me hard times are coming. Talk some sense to me.

      My 2016 f150 has the 3.5 ecoboost and has 230000 miles and still going strong. I relentlessly maintain it. 5000 mile oil changes and I add motorkote. No cam phaser, turbo, or timing chain troubles

    My buddy has a 2016 f350 regular cab long box with the 6.2, he runs 35s on 17s, a slight lift, and absolutely whoops the shit out of it. It’s towed more than any diesel pickup I’ve ever seen, talking 28k on a bumper pull in tow every once in a while, and like 16k daily. This truck will also sit comfortably at over a buck on the highway. The trans has been at over 450 degrees after a hard hill pull, and have yet to see an issue. The only downside I would say it has is it gets 7 mpg lol. Other than that solid fuckin truck.
    Edit: now that I think about it, makes sense a guy getting paid to work on fords would reccomend the 6.7, and dislike the 6.2…

    I don't know if I could afford the cost of the newer diesel trucks. Lots of extra costs to consider like buying DEF, Fuel Filter Changes, CP4 pump and Diesel is usually a buck more than gas. Kind of makes it a no brainer to go 6.2 to pull my lawn mower ha. Just the cost of a CP4 repair would pay for my 2015 6.2 XL ha ha.

    I had a 6.2 Boss work truck and even though I never had any issues it was notorious in 2012 when I drove it. I’m still holding out hope that Cummins or FMC develops and integrates the opposed piston like the Achates. Based on what you can find on RUclips, it’s still a prototypical engine, there’s a 10.6L in a Walmart Peterbilt, but there’s no updates on if or when it’ll ever hit the market. Its BHP and thermal rejection numbers seem astronomical compared to 4 stroke fuel burners.

    I bought my 2019 F250 PS because of the 10 speed in my 2019 F150. The truck wouldn't downshift, would sometimes just not go. They did 3 or 4 programs on the 10speed and never got it right.

    Being a 1995 dually F350 Centurion 460 gas owner. I am looking to go to a diesel for very, very cold weather, and a very mountainous area, pulling everything from tag along to 5th wheel and 50hp tractors. I'm looking for a video on your idea on an F350 single axle and dually and the only reason I am ask is because of a statement you post in a video. "You did not know and did not have that much experience on that engine." Honesty is a breath of fresh air. Not looking on advise on what to purchase, but the engines and transmissions hold up and issues. I am a very tight on maintenance do it on time or before.

    I just bought a new 7.3 after trading my 2012 6.2 , only trading due to rust. Have to say, hope the new 7.3 is as reliable as my 6.2! Had 120,000. Only repairs were minor reg. Maintenance. My only gripe is, the damn exhaust manifolds! Had them Replaced them a few times on both the 5.4 and 6.2! Drove me crazy! Hoping not an issue with 7.3

    I can agree on the biggest issue any engine encounters and thats lack of mantance from the owner. Take care of your equipment, and don't let any mechanic replace those punny little cam pins that sher off on the Cummins have a heavey duty cam pin machined in its place keyed in.

    6.2 is a fantastic gasoline engine, not to be compared to a diesel. Most municipals use the 6.2 here in ny were I live and beat the crap out of them and they don’t die. The population in my county is 2 million ppl just to give an idea on the municipal size, 99% ford 6.2. Also a 250 has a better suspension and higher payload and towing capacity then a 150, can’t compare. Good work on your channel keep it up!

    I love my 2017 6.7. Would I love to upgrade to have a 10R140, absolutely. I don't tow super heavy but I'll tell you towing 14K lbs up 6% grades at 5K ft altitude will make any gasser sound like it's its last pull. That's where the 6.7 shines. Add more gears and it makes it look like childes play. My buddy has a new 23' 6.7 HO and he tows way heavier than me. Up the same grades he doesn't walk but runs away from me. If I had the money, I would definitely upgrade. Love your videos man. I've been watching you from the beginning. Thank you for your honest opinion, your expertise, and your hard work.

    Great video, thanks for making it. Would a 2019 F350 SRW have a 6R140 or could it have a 6R100? Also could you make a video on basic maintenance on the 6.7 and the intervals for oil service, air filter, cabin filter, transmission service, transfer case service, differential services front and rear, CCV box service, brake fluid service and power steering fluid service? Thanks

    My 6.2 has pulled a 10,000 pound trailer since 2019 no problems. Most of the trucks with this motor get treated really bad.

    The best engine Ford made for trucks is the 300 inline 6 cyl! Now you can get 525 HP out of it with changes to pistons, intake manifold and turbo charger. Ford needs to build that and offer it now in F150-F350.

    The problem with the diesel engines is the complex emissions systems that cause the trucks to go into limp mode at the drop of a hat, as well as being incredibly expensive to own and maintain.
